I'm using an AlienWare M14 machine. I tried to create a virtual machine locally using Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro, but it still doesn't work (took me a lot of time). I added the Hyper-V features in "Turn windows feature on or off", and all
of the requirements to run Hyper-V are fulfilled (SLAT, BIOS, 64 bits, ...) (I attach the msinfo32 output in this post). At the last step in creating a virtual machine, it says "... The system cannot find the path specified... (0x80070003)" (for
details, check my attached image). I googled, tried some solutions but still no luck so far.
Thanks for any help.
Error creating virtual machine (Client Hyper-V, Win 8 Pro)
Registering guest os toward host licensing quota
Hello All,
As I understand from my research, server 2012 standard comes with 2 free virtual operating system environments which are down gradable. If I were to create a new VM with server 2012 standard running on it how do I register the guest VM towards that 2 vose quota? Is there a place in the host OS that will generate a key?
Thank You,

Hyper-V Replica Networking question
Hi
Just looking for some best practice guidance here, I have two standalone hyper-v hosts in my HQ (192.168.50.x) one replicating to the other then in my DR site I have extended replica to here (172.16.10.x) if and when i failover a VM from HQ with an IP of (192.168.50.x) it is not contactable in the DR subnet, what is best practice here as i dont want to have to manually change the IP of the app server to suit new DR site, just to add i dont run vlans as i dont have any switches capable of that, what are my options so it seamless failover and failback?
Thanks in advance

No snapshots of VM, but still 2 files remaining
Hello,
i am a VM which did have snaphots.
I have delete the snapshots from the hyperv-console. (server 2012R2).
Still i am having these 2 files for this server :
I cannot move/delete these files.
The first file isn`t in use by the vm (there is another file selected as system.vhdx
The Second one seems to be a snapshot-file...but the vm doesn`t have snapshots anymore.
Anybody with an option how to delete this files?
Thx
VM cannot access Internet when host is connected to VPN
Hello everyone,
I have a little problem with my Hyper-V network. I use internal switch (external seems to have problems when I want to access the host via RDP and host has Wifi only).
Now attached is my configuration as a wonderful picture. ;) My problem is this: I have a internal switch in Hyper-V which is used by the VMs. They can access the Internet because the host WiFi Adapter has Internet Sharing enabled. However, when I connect the host to the VPN, the VMs cannot access the internet anymore. I know it is not possible to share the VPN-Connection itself, but without any Internet I cannot connect the VMs to the VPN at all. So is there any way to connect the host to VPN and also the VMs?
Thanks! :)

Long Filename issues in HyperV
Guys,
I have an issue with HyperV restored VM's not starting after restoring a VM via a secondary DPM 2010 to a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 DR cluster at a DR site, and I am wondering if the issue pertains to long filenames. The VM being protected by the primary DPM 2010 server sits on another HyperV Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster at the Primary site. I'll try to give as much information as to where I am with this:
After the restore of the VHD from the secondary DPM 2010 to one of the Cluster Nodes in the DR site, choosing a CSV location on the DR cluster for the restore location (which runs successfully) the path to the VM's configuration file is quite long i.e. C:\ClusterStorage\TEST\VMNAME_11-24-2011_11.47.48\C-Vol\ClusterStorage\Test\VMNAME\Virtual Machines\A05C6555-35A0-45A3-9098-3CAF58F4A79F.xml. When I try to start the VM I see get an error along the lines of :
"VM is unable to initialize. An Attempt to read or update Virtual Machine Confiuration Failed"
Which to be honest is not a lot of information.
To troubleshoot I:
1. looked at the security permissions on all the restored VM files and the VMGUID had the correct rights to all these files.
2. I then started thinking it may be some sort of longfile issue so I copied the VM's .xml file to a folder I created at the root of the CSV i.e. c:\clusterstorage\VMName\A05C6555-35A0-45A3-9098-3CAF58F4A79F.xml
3. Then using mklink I created a link file to the to c:\clustestorage\VMName\A05C6555-35A0-45A3-9098-3CAF58F4A79F.xml
4. Then using ICACLS I added the VMGUID with requisite permissions to the link file in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines\A05C6555-35A0-45A3-9098-3CAF58F4A79F and the copied VM xml file at c:\clusterstorage\VMName\A05C6555-35A0-45A3-9098-3CAF58F4A79F.xml.
5. I went back to HyperV Manger and the VM started this time.
Can anyone tell me if this is a known long file name issue with HyperV or is there something else amiss here as this is quite a drawn out process to complete?
Thanks in Advance,
Mark
Cannot start virtual machine on Windows Server 2012
Hello,
I have a weird problem and have been unable to find a solution to it after two days of searching. I have Windows Server 2012 host on IBM x3500M2 machine. I set up a hyper-v platform (added the role, configured the storage and network) and created two virtual machines. Now when I try to start either one of these VMs, using the Hyper-V manager, it throws this error:
"machine name" could not initialize
Could not initialize machine remoting system. Error: Element not found. (0x80070490).
Could not find a usable certificate. Error: Element not found. (0x80070490)
In the event log there is a similar error with the event IDs: 3040, 12460, 12500.
I tried clearing up the certificate from vmm/personal folder to recreate it again but to no avail. I found few articles regarding a similar problem on Windows Server 2008R2 but from what I can see this problem mainly occurs with SCVMM...
8.1 Update 1 - Can't set up a default Virtual Machine.
The Virtual Machine Management service encountered an error while configuring the hard disk on virtual machine New Virtual Machine.
Failed to create the virtual hard disk.
The system failed to create
C:\users\public\documents\\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Discs\New Virtual Machine.vhdx
Originally, before setting the machine back to factory settings, I had got past this point creating a WindowsXP VM but was unable to edit the default VM so decided to go back to factory settings. Whilst applying 8.1 updates I found I had now got 8.1 Update 1 - then moving on to setting up VM I got the above error.
Having almost zero Windows experience beyond XP some advice would be greatly appreciated.
I see two options, one to go back to a USB system image 8.1 upgrade 1 or
revert to 8.1 recovery factory image
Unable to create a VM from Disk2VHD image - 2008 R2
Hi,
I have created a VHD using Disk2VHD tool and it is unable to boot. I have attached the VHD to new virtual machine and VM is keep getting the start-up repair wizard. When the VM booted for first time it displays a error mentioning that C:\Windows is corrupted and need to run chkdsk.
I have run chkdsk /f option and it has corrected few errors. but the issue remains as it is. Further, I have run following commands from command prompt when the VM is booted from Windows server 2008 R2 DVD.
bootrec/fixmbr
bootrec/fixboot
bootrec/scanos - total identified windows installations: 0
bootrec/rebuildbcd - total identified windows installations: 0
nothing worked for me and I tried using hyper-v 2.0 and 3.0 as well. same issue appear every time.
another thing I have noticed is that the physical servers doesn't show a "System Reserved" partition when creating the VHD image. So, the VHD has only the C: partition.
Could anyone give me a solution for this...??

Thisaru Perera.

Is it possible to use MAK licensing for Pooled Windows 7 Desktop Collection to activate the OS and Office or is KMS the only licensing model supported with single image VDI collections?
Random Network Adapters showing up in VM's
I have an odd issue I've been trying to tackle for a while now and am no closer to solving.
I"m running 2 Hyper-V Hosts currently not in a cluster (to likely change soon).
Each host has 2 Physical NIC's in a team with a switch "Virtual Switch" for Hyper-V. I recently also created new virtual switches for Migration and Cluster to prepare for the Hyper-V cluster.
So on my VM's I'm seeing Adatpers show up with "TAP-Windows Adapter v9 #2" or "TAP-Win32 Adapter OAS#3". There can be as many as 1 or in a current case 6. Removing them does nothing as they eventually will come back.
The IP's are generally 169.254.x.x though I have seen a 10.x.x.x IP.
For some time I did run a VPN on Server 2012, this was through a serve role. I do not run OpenVPN and I switched my VPN to run on my DD-WRT router.
This has frustrated me for some time, so any help is greatly appreciated.
Win 2012 guests in Hyper-V not starting after migration to SSD
Hi, I have a hp laptop with I-5, 8GB RAM and 1TB disk
Running Win 8.1 Pro , installed 4 Win 2012 servers eval VM, created domain ,installed SQL2012 cluster
while 4 system powered up I see a lot disk activity on host ,some processes are slow
to make VM runs faster....I bought Samsusng SSD 840 drive with 256 GB
Used following steps
1.In Hyper-V manager saved all 4 VM
2.Exported VM images to external drive
3.Droped VM images from C:\ on laptop
4.Using Samasung Data managment utils exported OS to SSD
5.Swap drives on laptop
6. System booted from SSD
7. Copied VM images to SSD
8.Tried to start Hyper-V mamanger got error "could not be started because the hypervisor is not running"
9. from CMD as admin executed bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto
10.Reboot system Succesfully started Hyper -V and all 4 VM was able to work with sql server on cluster
11.Shut down all 4 VM ,rebooted PC ,now when I try to start ANY of my 4 VMI am promted at windows startup screens
- Continue: Exit and continue to Windows 2012 (this reboots the box and brings me back to the same options screen).
- Troubleshoot: Refresh or reset your PC, or use advanced tools (there's nothing in there I can find to help me)
- Turn off your PC (this reboots the box and brings me back to the same options screen)
Do I have to make changes on OS , Hyper -V , VM in order to fix the problem?
Will VM(s) run really faster on SSD (I did not see any big difference exept booting time)?
Will VM(s) run faster if I put backup original disk but and relocate VM images to SSD connected to USB 3 (laptop has no external SATA output)
Thank you
Alex
Control Disk Usage Per Virtual Machine? Windows Server 2012 R2
Hi,
Is there a way to control disk usage per virtual machine by a fixed value or percentage (i.e. Disk: reads/writes/total b/sec) on Windows Server 2012 R2?
DPM 2012 R2 RU1, HyperV 2012 R2 Cluster Core Edition and VM Backup Online
Hello all,
In our environment we have recently migrated our VM from Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster to Windows 2012 R2 and after that we cannot take online backup of some guest with MS DPM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 1.
On every VM (Windows 2008 R2 based) the SCSI controller and the latest Integration Services are installed (the backup integration services is enable); all the following requirements are satisfied:
- The Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
- A virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
- A virtual machine has one or more volumes that are based on non-NTFS file systems.
- In a cluster configuration, the virtual machine Cluster Resource Group is offline.
- A virtual machine is not in a running state.
- A Shadow Storage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
I have verified the VSS providers and all looks fine:

Hyper-V Performance Chart & resources provisioning
Hi all, currently I just started to provide more support for Hyper-V server and all this while I been working at the data centre which uses VMware visualization.
For our Hyper-V, we are using two HP physical host and while working with the Hyper-V administrator I was told the following-> The HP Hyper-V is able to only support 4 VMs with 2 core each and would need to buy additional server if we go beyond 4 VM machines.
I'm not too sure how Hyper-V visualization is different from VMware but I think what I heard is very wrong.
I'm also curious is that on VMware I could see the amount of CPU & RAM the ESX Host is using but I don't see it on Hyper-V Manager unless using the Task Manager->Performance monitor is the only way.

Hyper-V Nic Teaming (reserve a nic for host OS)
Whilst setting up nic teaming on my host (server 2012 r2) the OS recommends leaving one nic for host management(access). IS this best practice? Seems like a waste for a nic as the host would hardly ever be accessed after initial setup.
I have 4 nics in total. What is the best practice in this situation?
Strange Errors Creating a VM
I'm getting some odd behavior when trying to create a VM. This started on a W2K12 box but I decided to upgrade it to R2 on the off chance that the problems I am seeing were being caused by something wrong in the OS. The problems persisted.
I am just trying to create a VM. Initially, I created it with the standard dynamically sizing 126G drive but I changed that to a fixed size 126G drive when I couldn't load an OS. I am getting 2 basic errors:
1) After booting to the OS CD (2K8R2), I tell it to install and it errors with "Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the Installation". I tried copying the ISO file to a couple of different locations on the off chance that I had a disk issue. No dice.
2) If I persist, it will get past the above error and it will present me with a list of OS editions to choose from. After choosing, it asks what partition I want it installed on. I select the 126G partition (the only one). It chews on that for a bit and does nothing. If I click "Next" again, it errors telling me that it requires at least 7G of free disk space to continue.
I have never seen this behavior before. What can be causing it?
Thanks
Bert
SOS!!! Recover Lost VHD
Hello,
I urgently need your help with this request and I will appreciate a quick response.
I performed a live migration of my VMs from one HYPERV host to another. Unfortunately, I lost the physical disk of the second HYPER-V host and I can't recover any files from it.
Is there a way I can recover the VHD from the initial Host as I think this is my best option right now. What usually happens to exported VHD during live migration?
Many thanks
