Migration/Live Migration fails with shared storage (SMB), but not all the time

I have 2 Hyper-V Hosts using shared storage via SMB. I'm having intermittent issues with migrations failing. It'll either go through the motions of doing the whole move and fail and/or when I try to start it again I get the following:

I've done a lot of reading on this and have done various things that have been recommended. For each Hyper-V host I've setup delagation via Kerberos. ie. HV_Host1 has CIFS - HV_Host2; CIFS - SMB Server; MS Virtual System Migration Service - HV_Host2 and vice versa.

On the actual SMB share on the Shared Storage server I added permissions to the folder for HV_Host1, HV_Host2, Storage Server, Domain Admins and my user account for full access.
In Group Policy, I've blocked Inheritance for the OU containing the Hyper-V hosts, though I have added some of the Group Policy's manually that I needed.

Last thing, I also added Domain Admins to the Local GP on each Host for "Log on as a Service" and "Impersonate a client after authentication" as shown in this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/7e6b9b1b-e5b1-4e9e-a1f3-2ce72ea1e543/unable-to-migrate-create-vm-hyperv-cluster-2012-logon-failure-have-to-restart-the-hyperv

I get these failed migrations regardless if I start them on the actual Host or via the admin console from Win8.

At this point I'm not sure what else to check or the next step to take for this.

Creating Virtual NICs on Hyper-V Failover Cluster Host

Dear All,

How to create Virtual NICs from a teamed interface that is to be used for Hyper-V Failover Cluster?  THanks.

Event ID 32086 followed immediatly by Event ID 32022

I am trying to perform a reverse replication after an unplanned failover in a lab environment. I receive the following two errors:

Event ID 32086

Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1' due to a non-recoverable failure. (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83). Resume replication after correcting the failure.

Event ID 32022

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83)

The replication fails at 88% everytime. I can resume replication and it completes. But I am not sure how to start troubleshooting why the failure occurs.

Thanks for the help

MMC missing on Hyper-V Core install

I'm trying to import a certificate on my primary hyper-v server.

Part of the process is running 'mmc' from the command prompt on the server.

When I RDP onto the Hyper-V server and run mmc from the command prompt it cannot be found.

I looked in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 and sure enough mmc.exe is _not_ there.

Going back to Server Tools on my Win81 PC under the Tools menu there is a Certificate Authority option but when I click that I get a "cannot manage Active Directory Certificate Services" error - which I'm not surprised by since I haven't installed AD.

So in a workgroup environment how do run the Certificates Manager on my primary Hyper-V server?

Any ideas?

No network connectivity for VMs with tagged VLANs after upgrade to W2K12 R2

Hi all

I have a lab consisting of 2 Mac Mini Servers, late 2009 model, most often running Hyper-V on the newest evaluation versions of Windows Server. With Windows Server 2012, everything was running smoothly. After upgrading to Windows Server 2012 R2, all VMs that are assigned to a VLAN lost network connectivity (aka "Enable virtual LAN identification" in the VM NIC settings). VMs using no vlan id work as expected!

While doing research it seems like there are some network-related problems with W2K12 R2 floating around, but I was unable to find any useful info matching my problem.

Installing W2K12 R2 Update 1 did not help in any way. After quite some hours with eliminating possible problem sources, I seem to end up with this behavior being a BUG in Windows Server 2012 R2.

Here some details for anybody willing to doublecheck that I did not overlook anything:

The server setup

: both servers are configured identically. The build-in NIC is assigned to a virtual switch of type "External", and is shared with the management OS. Each host has an additional FastEthernet USB adapter, which is also configured as virtual switch of type "External", but not shared with the OS.

The upstream switch

is configured to send untagged traffic for the management network, and tagged traffic for all VM networks, on all ports that are connected to the lab server (meaning both for the built-in and for the USB network adapter). The switch config was not touched in the OS upgrade process.

Misc settings:

1. When setting "Enable virtual LAN identification for management operating system" and re-configuring the switch to send tagged traffic also for management network, then the management OS also looses network connectivity.

2. Un-checking the "Allow management operating system to share this networking adapter" does not help either. When running Get-NetAdapter I see that the physical adapter (Ethernet) has the same MAC-address as the virtual adapter (vEthernet), as somewhat described here.

3. Attaching the VMs to the vitual switch using the USB network adapter does not help either, so I am inclined to rule out a driver related problem since the problem show on two completely different NICS - unless Microsoft somewhat has made changes to VLAN traffic handling in Hyper-V/virtual switch!

Device Manager reports the built-in NIC

as VEN_10DE / DEV_0AB0, and according to pcidatabase.com this is the "NForce 9300 LAN/SATA/SMBUS/SMU/GPU" controller. Device Manager reports it as "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller Properties", driver version 7.3.1.7336 from 23.02.2012. When checking the NIC configuration (Device Manager/NVIDIA .. Network Controller, Properties, Advanced), I see that the propertyPriority & VLAN with value ofPriority Enabled. When changing this toPriority & VLAN Enabled, management OS also looses network connectivity. The VMs still do not have any network connectivity. - In short: it seems like Window Server 2012 R2 has - at least in my lab scenario - a serious problem handling any VLAN-related traffic. Windows Server 2012 was working flawlessly. Any hints appreciated, or some feedback if other are experiencing similar issues.

Enable Hyper-V Replica SMB3 share - General Access denied error (0x80070005)

Hi,

We have 2 datacenters with 1 cluster in each site. We want to setup hyper-v replica from DC1 to DC2 and from DC2 to DC1 for specific VMs.

Virtual hard disks are in both locations stored on SMB3 shares.
A Hyper-V replica broker has been setup on both clusters and replication is enabled via the replica broker in both ways.
We don't use certificates, we use Kerberos. When starting the wizard to enable replication for a VM we can configure everything till the end (last summary screen).  When we press Finish we get the error "Enabling Replcation Failed, Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine X : General Access denied error (0x80070005) VM ID".

On SMB3 share in DC1 we have:
added hostname1 & hostname 2 of cluster in DC2 and also the clusterobject with Full Control
Do we need to add the hyper-v replica broker object?

on SMB3 share in DC2 we have
added hostname1 & hostname 2 of cluster in DC1 and also the clusterobject with Full Control

Constrained delegation has been setup (example below):
hostname1 in DC1
 Kerberos
  CIFS SMB3 DC2
  CIFS SMB3 DC1
  CIFS hostname 2
Virtual Machine Manager Service Hostname 2

Do we need to add the Hyper-V Replica Service also for the constrained delegation configuration?

Linkwas not much of help.

Dynamic MAC Duplication - Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster

$

We ran into a problem with duplicate dynamic MACs in our 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster. We restarted a server and when it came up, it had a MAC that another VM had on another Hyper-v host in the cluster. To get out of the problem, I shut the machine down and assigned the machine a static MAC.

After further reading, it appears that I probably should have just restarted the machine and let it pick up a new dynamic MAC from the pool on the Hyper-V host where it resided. It still makes me wonder why another machine had the same dynamically assigned MAC and neither of the VMs wanted to change.

Has anyone struggled with this before?

Manage Hyper-V Server Core 2012 through virtual switch

Hello folks,

I've got four physical NICs configured as a NIC team and connected to a virtual switch. I tested the configuration using a Linux Live-CD and the network is working fine. But now the problem arose that I'm not able to talk to the Hyper-V Host, as I've only got 4 phyiscal NICs and thus can't configure a network connection for the host. Is there any way to connect the host to the virtual switch so that I don't net a seperate physical management NIC?

Kindest regards,
Wolfram

What settings for Hyper-V virtual Switch?

$

HOST: Windows Server 2012 R2

Guest VM: Windows Server 2012 R2

When I went to create a virtual switch, the "Allow the management operating system to share this adapter"  checkbox was checked by default.

I also checked the VLAN ID, Enable virtual LAN identification for management operating system.

Sadly, this killed the connection on the host and I had to get back in through the KVM and remove the virtual switch I had created, just so I could ping or RDP into the server again.

SOOO...I did some research and found differing opinions, any of which I try, throws a warning message that this COULD kill the network connection on the VM's AND the host. Natrually this makes me a bit nervous:

This blog says to leave the defaults checked, including the "Allow the management operating system to share this adapter".

http://kb.iweb.com/entries/23649667-Windows-Server-2012-Create-a-new-virtual-switch-in-Hyper-V

While this blog says to disable the "Allow the management operating system to share this adapter" setting that is enabled by default.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2010/06/04/not-able-to-access-the-hyper-v-host-machine-on-the-network-even-though-virtual-machines-on-that-host-machine-can-communicate-on-the-same-network.aspx

What to do?

There doesn't seem to be a lot of step by step instructions online for how to configure this, and what little information I did find seemed to be contradicted from one blog to the next.

Moved Hyper-V 2012 VM to Hyper-V 2012 R2 long ping respond, slow connection

Hi,

I have two Hyper-V server, one in 2012 and the other in 2012 R2. I use SCVMM 2012 R2 and begins to move all my VM(host 2012) to my new host 2012 R2. Some of the VM begins to have slow network connection. I try to upgrade the integrated Windows services but not luck, some vm are really slow with the ping respond (over 75ms). Other VM who's been migrated and works well responds in 1ms like the host itself. a new vm directly created on the 2012 R2 host is fine and respond in 1ms. So what can be the problem?

Thanks

Backup Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Core) with Windows Server Backup without suspending VMs

Hi there a way to create a scheduled backup task on a Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Core) using the integrated Windows Server Backup tool that allow a online backup of all VMs without turning them into suspended (saved) state during backup?

I I run a single VM backup manually, it make online backup of the VM, but once I schedule all VMs backup, they turn into saved (Suspended) state each time!

There's 5 VM on my Hyper-V host, who are :

- Win2012R2 STD as Domain Controller (Primary)

- Win2012R2 STD as Terminal Host Server

- Win2012R2 STD as File Server

- Win 8.1 Pro as Filemaker Pro 13 sharing server

- Win 7 Pro as a test machine

I know the Domain Controller needed to use the -VSSFULL switch on the backup because it need to purge the transaction queue before backing up to prevent AD database corruption. But I don't know if I can split up my backup schedule because I dont think it's a good idea to VSSFULL all the VMs other than the DC??

I used this command on my Hyper-V Server Core :

wbadmin enable backup -hyperv:guest1,guest2,guest3,guest4,guest5 -vssFull -schedule:00:00

It work fine, but it suspend all my VMs for about 1 hour each night and I did not really like that.. especially for the domain controller (even if I have a physical secondary domain controller standing right beside).

Could you please give me some help?

Live migration Vnic on hosts randomly losing connectivity HELP

$

Hello Everyone,

I am building out a new 2012 R2 cluster using VMM with converged network configuration.  I have 5 physical nics and teaming 3 of them using dynamic load balancing.  I have configured 3 virtual network adapters in host which are for management, cluster and Live migration.  The live migration nic loses connectivity randomly and fails migrations 50% of the time.

Hardware is IBM blades (HS22) with Broadcom Netextreme II nics.  I have updated firmware and drivers to the latest versions.  I found a forum with something that looks very similar but this was back in November so Im guessing there is a fix.

http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/mvaneijk/2013/11/vnics-and-vms-loose-connectivity-at-random-on-windows-server-2012-r2/

Really need help with this.

Thanks

But after that i cannot see him active in the VM Win 7. If i go back to Disk Management in Server 2008 is standing there as offline (and i cannot put it online here says ACESS DENIED) so please give some tips how to fix this.

I have a guest cluster of two nodes using a shared vhdx.  What is the practice for expanding the shared disk?  When I try to expand it the regular way, I get the following error message:

the requested operation cannot be performed on the virtual disk as it is currently used in shared mode

No Network connectivity from Host to Guest and vice versa

$

I hope someone here can point me at the right direction. It is somewhat critical as the machine that failed is our second DC. I have a Hyper-V host with two guests running on it. No changes have been made to the host or the failing guest machine. The host can talk to the other VM and vice versa. The host has an external network configured and has a checkbox for sharing the network adapter checked. The VM that is failing is using that particular network. Failing VM has a static IP configured within the same subnet as the host. I cannot ping the VM from the host and VM cannot ping the host. File and printer sharing is enabled on the guest. Let me know what kind of additional info I can provide but I'll start with the above.

Hello people, I'm having the following with the GEN 2 in Hyper-V 2012 R2.

Issue: After bouncing my GEN2  Hyper-V VM I get this.

Then I get the Windows Repair and nothing happens after this point!

Does someone have experience this issue ?

The bad thing with it is as it's production there's no checkpoints and I cannot recover it!

Note: this doesn't happens with GEN1 VM's.

Any help will be really appreciated

When I connect to my VM and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu, nothing happens.  Should this be on my my Windows Server 2008 R2 DVD that I used to set yp Hyper-V and my two VMs?

Thanks
