Encounter Error when trying to inspect VHD

Hi Hyper V Guru,

I am trying to do inspect on the disk of my VM by right clicking the VM-> select settings -> Select Hard Drive -> and click on the Inspect. However I am encountering the error message: "An Error occurred attempting to connect to the virtual disk management service on computer 'localhost'. Cannot connect to the RPC service on computer 'localhost'. make sure your RPC service is running. what is actually the issue that happen?

Second query: how do I accurately confirm that my VM has no snapshot?

Third Query: if my disk is fixed vhd disk, is it possible to expand it? what are the best procedures and steps of doing this task? what I should notice properly before expanding? will there be any risk of expanding VHD? as this is our production exchange server and very critical, I am really worry of doing this.

Thanks for your attention.

Regards,

Henry

Hyper-V could not initialize (rights?)

Hello,

I have an WIN2012 R2 Server.
Unfortunatley it is serving as a DC (I know this is not recommended).

I set up the HYPER-V role and when I start I receive with a newly created VM (no etwork connected yet):

'TEST111' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID 49608249-F381-43E8-BCCF-F6C61CDE68A0)
Event ID 3040

Most likely it has something to do with the rights. I tried to apply this thread, but no luck:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ae8a90a2-4251-4fbd-b644-72dcd4b5f08c/error-an-attempt-to-initialize-vm-saved-state-failed-when-starting-any-vm?forum=winserverhyperv

I reinstalled the role and it still does not work. It looks like the old Settings of the hyper-v program stay on the machine after deinstalling the role, because after the reboots and Setting it up again it Shows the old Settings.

The process Monitor Shows:

HKCR\Applications\vmconnect.exe : NAME NOT FOUND Desired Access: Read.

Q:

Is there a way to completly clean the hyper-v stuff?

It might be that hyper-v only accepts local admin users (especially on a DC)?

Cannot Remotely Import VM from SMB Share

$

Let me start by saying, I've followed just about every guide I can find on delegation and permissions and virtually everything works just fine except for this...

I created a VM using Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. That server was created on, stored on and exported to a Server 2012 R2 File Server, all using my workstation (Windows 8.1) to remotely manage the Hyper-V server. That should be proof that delegation works perfectly fine (being able to create a VM and export it on the SMB share remotely, right?)

My user account, workstation computer account, and the Hyper-V server account all have full rights to the SMB share (NTFS and Share Permissions). To clarify further, my user account is a domain admin.

However, when I go to import the exact same machine that I JUST exported successfully I get the error: Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location '\\FS01\Hyper-V\Exports\Server2012R2\' - The folder '\\FS01\Hyper-V\Exports\Server2012R2\' could not be found. You might not have permission to access it.

Here are some outputs to show that I've, hopefully, configured everything correctly:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-SmbDelegation FS01
WS
HV02
PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-SmbDelegation HV02
WS

WS:
Get-WSManCredSSP
The machine is configured to allow delegating fresh credentials to the following target(s): wsman/*.domain.local

HV02:
Invoke-Command -ComputerName HV02 -ScriptBlock {Get-WSManCredSSP}
The machine is configured to allow delegating fresh credentials to the following target(s): wsman/FS01.domain.local

This computer is configured to receive credentials from a remote client computer.

FS01:
Invoke-Command -ComputerName FS01 -ScriptBlock {Get-WSManCredSSP}
The machine is not configured to allow delegating fresh credentials.
This computer is configured to receive credentials from a remote client computer.

I should also not that it works fine if I remote desktop to the HV02 server and do the import.

Shared Virtual Disks forcing RedirectedIO to the CSV disk owner

Afternoon Chaps,

I have a problem with my physical Server 2012 R2 2node HyperV Cluster. I have created a VM guest cluster using shared .VHDX files that reside on the physical cluster's CSV files.

Everything is working fine, everything is online and fails over when needed as expected. However once I started performance testing I realised that unless the Guest Cluster Node VM was running on the same physical hardware node that owned the CSV its shared VHDX resides on - any IO to that shared VHDX sends it via redirected-IO across the ClusterNetwork (lowest metric network) to whichever physical hardware node owns the CSV, then that node sends the IO to the SAN using direct-IO.

If the Guest Cluster Node VM *is* running on the same physical hardware node that owns the CSV the shared VHDX resides on - then the IO is sent normally using Direct-IO.

The issue is that the difference between my DirectIO (12GB SAS) and redirected IO (1GB Network) is crippling my performance. Has anyone else seen this? I can't find *anything* in any articles or TechNet suggesting this is expected behaviour and I really need to resolve it :(

NOTE - If anyone can test this on their own cluster/lab - you can spin up a test VM (Server 2012 or 2012R2) with two additional SCSI disks, mark one of them as a shared VHDX (you don't need to build a guest cluster, just ticking the box has the same effect) and then test by copying a large file onto each (one drive at a time) monitoring the copy speed and your physical cluster's ClusterLAN/LiveMigrationLAN (whichever is set to handle CSV redirected IO traffic) to see the traffic go over the network. If it matches what I am seeing then the normal SCSI .VHDX will send it via DirectIO regardless of what physical hardware node owns the CSV, while the Shared SCSI .VHDX will use RedirectedIO if the CSV owner is not the same hardware node that is running the VM.

There is no indication in the UI that this is happening and no information/warning/errors are logged. On top of that it does not even show the physical cluster's CSV in redirected mode - it is redirecting at a file level on the CSV (the shared .VHDX)

If anyone has any thoughts on how to correct this - it would be much appreciated as I really need to resolve this asap :)

Regards

Joe

Hyper-V VMM Service terminated with the following error: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host server that has been performing perfectly up until one week ago. This is a lab environment, but it is an important lab for testing deployments of Exchange, SCCM, ADFS, as well as desktop deployment scenarios using ADK 8.1. The point is its an important lab environment for my consulting firm.

The problem: About a week ago I fired up the host server and thevirutal machine manager service will not start. The error is as stated in the post above.

The host is nowhere near out of disk space and the disk is not corrupted. All file checks and disk checks pass with no errors. The files have all been verified for accuracy. The available disk space on the system disk is 40GB. All of the VM Guests and the default machine configuration files as well as Vhdx files are stored on a separate disk that check out good as well with over 400GB free space.

The event log shows the error posted above and the only other error in the event log is Event ID: 46

\Device\HarddiskVolume7

Volmgr - Crash dump initialization failed.

Disk 7 has nothing to do with the Windows Server installation or Hyper-V files.

The only other thing I did on this machine is create 2 separate partitions on a separate disk and install Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 as a dual-boot option. The problem did seem to occur after doing this but not immediately. I also, cannot make the connection as to why this would have caused the service to fail. The Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 files are on a completely different disk with the BCD boot options being the only configuration change that was made to the system disk or C:\Root drive.

Please help! It's important to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Hyper-v Management network design

Folks

I am looking into some best practices ; here is the scenario :

Multi Node hyper -V cluster
each machine had two pairs of teamed NIC cards ( 2 teams/server )
storage network is a separate SaS network and no iSCSI ; so we will have followings for remains :

  • Cluster network
  • Live Migration network
  • Management network
  • VM production traffic

Our goal is to have an efficient network , so we are going to dedicate one Teamed-NIC to our external network.
we end up having one more teamed-NIC per server to manage cluster , Live Migration and Management network.
we do have separate switches for management environment ; so what would be the best approach ?

My thought :

1-Create different virtual NICs for cluster/liveMigration and Management within Hyper-V ; these NICs will be usable
through management operating system as well.

2- Assign different IP subnets to each network

3- Connect last Teamed-NIC to management switches ; configure VLAN and QoS ; so that cluster traffic gets priority .

OR .. should I configure QoS through HyperV virtual switch ?

Any thoughts ? suggestions ?

Hi,

I have created a Virtual machine and in server settings I've kept CD as 1st boot device.
Still the when Start the VM it say's test-server could not intialize.(Virtual machine ID 9B1803BB-5C1E-42DD-9809-A17663A04C8D).
test-server is the name of my virtual machine.
While creating the virtual machine i have set option to intall OS has later.

Is there any way i can install the OS from CD now and not with Image file.
Please tell me what are the Bios settings should be, to install OS on a VM to start intsall OS as i press the connect and select start on action pane.

Thanks in advance,

Implementing QoS on a Hyper-V Failover Cluster

$

Dear All,
How can one implement QoS on a Hyper-V Failover Cluster.  If the network of the cluster is based on two teams (Virtual Machine and Cluster+Heartbeat+LiveMigration).  The Virtual Machine Team is used for Virtual Machines only and the other team (Management) is only used for (Cluster+Heartbeat+LiveMigration).  How would I configure both teams in order to implement QoS?

How to set video display parameters for the guest OS?

$

I don't see display adapter options in the hardware list for a VM.  How does the guest OS know what are the display resolutions available?

I have installed Ubuntu 14 on two different PCs, one in Windows 8 Hyper-V and another in VirtualBox.  In VirtualBox, it started off with only one resolution: 640x480.  After I increased the video RAM from the default 12MB to 32MB, I get to choose from 800x600 as well as 1024x768.

In my Hyper-V, my Ubuntu has only 1152x864. I need 1024x768. How do I do it?

Thanks.

Error creating virtual machine (Client Hyper-V, Win 8 Pro)

I'm using an AlienWare M14 machine. I tried to create a virtual machine locally using Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro, but it still doesn't work (took me a lot of time). I added the Hyper-V features in "Turn windows feature on or off", and all of the requirements to run Hyper-V are fulfilled (SLAT, BIOS, 64 bits, ...) (I attach the msinfo32 output in this post). At the last step in creating a virtual machine, it says "... The system cannot find the path specified... (0x80070003)" (for details, check my attached image). I googled, tried some solutions but still no luck so far.

Thanks for any help.

Copying files very slow between VM Server 2012 and 2008

Hello to all,
I have a very strange problem, the scenario is this:
1. Server 2012 Hyper-V
2. No. 14 V.M. Windows Server 2008 R2

All MV accessing the hard disk of the server 2012 via an internal network card with no bandwidth limit.
Only 2 MV have a very slow file transfer.
If I try the reverse, copy files from 2012 to 2008, the operation is fast
MV on all firewalls are disabled and there is no antivirus installed.

Obviously the server is in production and not a lot of possibility to maneuver.
Thanks in advance

VM cannot connect to it's host

I am running a 8 node Hyper-V Failover Cluster.
The cluster has a management interface, a VM LAN virtual switch (not shared with management OS) and a iSCSI and two DMZ virtual switches.

The SCVMM server is also a VM running on this cluster.

The general problem is that a VM on a host cannot reach the host, and vice versa. Ping, WinRM for example.
This also means that SCVMM always has a not responding host. The one where it's VM is on at that moment.

The VLAN tags used is the same for the management interface and the VM's using the VM LAN virtual switch.
We set the VLAN ID for a VM in the VM's settings, and the VLAN ID for the management interface is set in the team properties.

The NIC is a QLogic QLE3242 with four VNICs per physical port. There is a team consisting of one VNIC of each physical port.
The management team is tagged to a specific VLAN ID. The VM LAN team is untagged since we do that in the VM settings.

All QLE3242's in the nodes are connected to a Cisco Nexus 5200 switch each, which is one logical swtich.
The switch is transparent. No VLAN tagging done there at all.

Could the VLAN tagging on the team be a problem? Meaning, would setting the VLAN ID on with Set-NetAdapter be better/wiser? And more importantly, resolve my issue?

2012 R2 - Checkpoint cleanup from failed VM backup

$

We recently had a network traffic / virtual switch issue crop up, due to VMQ being enabled and improperly configured on Broadcom 10GbE adapters.  While that failure occurred, our backup appliances were taking backups of VMs.  Because of lost network connectivity, the Hyper-V checkpoints used for those backups remain on some of our VMs.

These checkpoints do not have the usual "Delete Checkpoint" / "Delete Checkpoint Subtree" options available to them.  How do I remove them so the virtual disks are merged and back to a single VHDX per virtual disk?

How to assign new disks to existing Virtual Machine.

Hi friends,

I have a Hyper-V 2012 server with a Server 2012 Virtual Machine running on it. I have installed three new disks and created a hardware RAID5 with them.. I booted the Hyper-V 2012 Server and the new RAID was then available to the system and listed under disk management. So, I took the RAID disk offline in the Hypervisor, then shutdown the Server 2012 Virtual Machine and added the new RAID disk as a passthrough disk..

However, when we tried to back up the disk (which shows up as E: in the Server 2012 Virtual Machine) ArcServe gives me an error. I am currently talking to ArcServe about this error, but this is my question:

Is this the correct way to make the RAID available to the Virtual Machine?

thanks,

J

Measuring resource usage

I apologize for the very basic question.

By the way, if this is not the right forum, please point me to the right one.

I started testing Hyper-v on Windows Server 2012 R2.

I installed in a lab environment Windows Server 2012 R2 asd a standalone server member of a Workgroup, I enabled the Hypoer-v role and created some VMs.

How can I display the amount of host resources (CPU, Memory, and so on) used at a given time by each guest VM?

Virtual Machine Interface Configuration

Dear All,

I am building a Hyper-V Failover cluster.  I have created two teamed interfaces which comprise of two physical NICs.  One team is assigned to Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration.  The other teamed interface I plan to use is for Virtual Machines.  I have following questions with regards to configuring the virtual machines teamed interface:

1.  Since, virtual machines would be of different subnet on the host, what needs to be configured on the teamed interface in order for it to support multiple VLANs? what other settings on the vms would be required?

2. How would I be managing multiple VLANs on the host?

3.  What needs to be configured on the port/switch for such a configuration?

Create Virtual NICs of a Teamed Interface

Dear All,

I am building a Hyper-V Failover Cluster.  I have created a team (two physical nics) which I plan to only use for Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration.  I have following questions:

1.  How to create virtual NICs out of this teamed interface and assign them to respective networks?

2.  Do Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration Networks have to be on different subnet or they can be part of the same subnet as well?

3.  In both cases that is same subnet or different subnet, how would networks be assigned?

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V Failover Cluster Networking Configuration After Install

$

Hello All,

Is it possible to install hyper-v and failover or in other words create a hyper-v failover cluster and then configure the networking part of the solution later?  As I am coming into terms with the networking part of it, wanted to do it later after the install.  Is it possible?

And from later configuration, I am trying to say, creation of NIC Team, Virtual NICs, VLAN tagging, etc.
