Hyper-v Management network design

$

Folks

I am looking into some best practices ; here is the scenario :

Multi Node hyper -V cluster
each machine had two pairs of teamed NIC cards ( 2 teams/server )
storage network is a separate SaS network and no iSCSI ; so we will have followings for remains :

  • Cluster network
  • Live Migration network
  • Management network
  • VM production traffic

Our goal is to have an efficient network , so we are going to dedicate one Teamed-NIC to our external network.
we end up having one more teamed-NIC per server to manage cluster , Live Migration and Management network.
we do have separate switches for management environment ; so what would be the best approach ?

My thought :

1-Create different virtual NICs for cluster/liveMigration and Management within Hyper-V ; these NICs will be usable
through management operating system as well.

2- Assign different IP subnets to each network

3- Connect last Teamed-NIC to management switches ; configure VLAN and QoS ; so that cluster traffic gets priority .

OR .. should I configure QoS through HyperV virtual switch ?

Any thoughts ? suggestions ?

Converting to fixed vhd - large disk

Hi,

Have a dynamic vhd of 1.7 TB - currently expanded to 1.4 TB.

The volumes on the SAN is 2TB.

Need to convert the dynamic vhd to fixed vhd but as you can see there is not enough Space on the SAN volume.

Any suggestion on how this may be solved without loosing the huge amount of data on the disk?

Backup Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Core) with Windows Server Backup without suspending VMs

$

Hi there a way to create a scheduled backup task on a Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Core) using the integrated Windows Server Backup tool that allow a online backup of all VMs without turning them into suspended (saved) state during backup?

I I run a single VM backup manually, it make online backup of the VM, but once I schedule all VMs backup, they turn into saved (Suspended) state each time!

There's 5 VM on my Hyper-V host, who are :

- Win2012R2 STD as Domain Controller (Primary)

- Win2012R2 STD as Terminal Host Server

- Win2012R2 STD as File Server

- Win 8.1 Pro as Filemaker Pro 13 sharing server

- Win 7 Pro as a test machine

I know the Domain Controller needed to use the -VSSFULL switch on the backup because it need to purge the transaction queue before backing up to prevent AD database corruption. But I don't know if I can split up my backup schedule because I dont think it's a good idea to VSSFULL all the VMs other than the DC??

I used this command on my Hyper-V Server Core :

wbadmin enable backup -hyperv:guest1,guest2,guest3,guest4,guest5 -vssFull -schedule:00:00

It work fine, but it suspend all my VMs for about 1 hour each night and I did not really like that.. especially for the domain controller (even if I have a physical secondary domain controller standing right beside).

Could you please give me some help?

Hyper V Switch Vlan ?

Hi Guys

I am have some problems with testing dhcp relay in my lab environment

I have 2 subnets   172.16.1.X /24   and 172.16.2.x/24 I have windows server 2012 r2 routing between the 2

I have added the dhcp relay in routing , but no help

Dhcp is not giving ip address in the 172.16.2.x / subnet   1 subnet is working fine

I have created a scope for it as well

Routing is working as I can ping between the subnets

Does dhcp relay require a VLAN for dhcp relay to work?

All VMs are using internal nic

I don't have a managed switch around to create VLAN

Please help???

Enhanced Session Mode but 8.1 VM stuck with Basic Display Adapter

Server 2012 R2 (GUI, and Hyper-V enabled). Enhanced Session Mode Policy set to "Allow..." on Server and "Use if..." on User.  Hardware is Asus P9X79, socket 2011 i7, 24G, etc. RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter set to show Maximum number of monitors = [2]. Server is not part of a domain (i.e., it is WORKGROUP).

Graphics card is GeForce GTX 650 with current NVIDIA driver (tried the Beta but that didn't fetch.) The NVIDIA control panel (on the server) shows correct monitor identifiers (they are not the same). "Screen Resolution" on the server shows both monitors and their correct identifiers.

All drivers (including motherboard and Intel for the i7) are up to date.

Guest is Windows 8.1 (Gen I volume).

<symptoms>Whenever I "Connect..", the "Screen Resolution" dialog shows a single monitor with an incorrect identifier. The "Adapter Type" says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter identified with an IBM SVGA BIOS "Chip type".  The mobo has *NO* video hardware on it. Nada. None. (I thought the Windows 8.1 Device Manager was supposed to show the display adapter to be "Microsoft RemotFX Graphics Device - WDDM".) I even tried installing the NVIDA drivers in the VM - but the installation program couldn't find any NVIDA devices.</symptoms>

All I want to do is learn NVIDIA CUDA and MSFT AMP while I'm at home. I'm a MSFT partner so this is not my first dance and the company I work for is more concerned with storage and networking so I can't put NVIDIA GPUs on any of my other Hyper-v servers. Since I can't get a Windows 8.1 VM configured for two monitors, I've got a feeling my chances of becoming familiar with GPGPU programming are between slim and none. HELP!

How to assign new disks to existing Virtual Machine.

$

Hi friends,

I have a Hyper-V 2012 server with a Server 2012 Virtual Machine running on it. I have installed three new disks and created a hardware RAID5 with them.. I booted the Hyper-V 2012 Server and the new RAID was then available to the system and listed under disk management. So, I took the RAID disk offline in the Hypervisor, then shutdown the Server 2012 Virtual Machine and added the new RAID disk as a passthrough disk..

However, when we tried to back up the disk (which shows up as E: in the Server 2012 Virtual Machine) ArcServe gives me an error. I am currently talking to ArcServe about this error, but this is my question:

Is this the correct way to make the RAID available to the Virtual Machine?

thanks,

J

Win 2012 shared-nothing live migration slow performance

Hello,

i have two standalone hyper-v servers - A) 2012 and  B) 2012 r2.

I tried live migration on non-shared storage between them. The functionality is alright but performance is low. The copying take a long time with max 200 Mbps.

I am not able to find the bottleneck. Network a disk performance seems to be good. It is 1Gbps network and when I tried simple copy paste the vhd file from A to B through cifs protocol, the speed was about almost full 1Gbps - it was nice and fast.

Is it feature? I am not able reach full network performance with shared-nothing live migration.

Thank you for reply

sincerely

Windows 8.1 Update 1 will not maintain licensing in VDI collections

I have been running Windows 8.1 Enterprise on Windows 2012R2 servers successfully since 8.1 was released using the skiprearm parameter to configure the template.

This goes the same for Windows 8.0 Enterprise.

However, since applying Update 1, performing the sysprep now leaves the template un-activated, which means everytime I bring online a Windows 8.1.1 Enterprise desktop, it tries to activate against the MAK.  I went from having 18 activations left, to 0 in less than a minute.

I have looked at the refresh of the ADK, but the documentation mentions nothing about any changes to the unattended file format.

Here is the contents of the XML file.  I have changed the Processor Architecture to AMD64 from X86 just in case, so far no luck.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
    <settings pass="generalize">
        <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Security-SPP" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
            <SkipRearm>1</SkipRearm>
        </component>
    </settings>
</unattend>

Is there something I am missing?  I have gone to the extent of updating even Windows 2012R2 to U1 just incase there was something new required - still no go.

How connect to internet from domain created in Hyper-V

Host =  Win8 Pro

Connection to internet done using WI-FI

Internet seeting
Home router with secury connection -> cable internet
Network name set on router = "Mtl2014"

Host setting

TCP/IPv4 Seeting for WI-FI ,connected to "Mtl2014"
Obtain address automaticly
Obtain DNS server address automaticly
I can connect and browse internet from host

In Hyper-V
 1.created 2 private virtual switches SW1 and SW2
 2.installed 2 VM HA1 and DC with Win2012 server eval edition
 3.assigned stations HA1 and DC  to virtual switch SW1

on Host
WI-FI network connection
 Sharing->Allow other network to connect.. ->Home network connection vEnthernet (SW1)

in Hyper-V
 choose Activate windows on  HA1 and DC
 open browser on HA1 and DC ,
 At this point I am able to see and browse and search in google from HA1 and DC

In Hyper-V
 assined virtual switch SW2 to DC and HA1
 created Domain controler on DC and domain Alex1.com

 TCP/IPv4 Seeting on DC
 IP = 192.165.1.8
 subnet = 255.255.255.0
 default getaway = empty
 Prefered DNS server = 192.165.1.8

 TCP/IPv4 Seeting on HA1
 IP = 192.165.1.11
 subnet = 255.255.255.0
 default getaway = 192.165.1.8
 Prefered DNS server = 192.165.1.8

 added HA1 to domain Alex1.com

Question
 What seeting on SW2, DC, HA1 and  Wi-FI should I change in order to have access to internet from  Alex1\DC and Alex1\HA1?

I was planning to use internet to download/install pacthes/updates for windows and sql servers located on Alex1\
I plan to build 6 more Win 2012 server eval and join then to Alex1\

Thank you
Alex

8.1 Update 1 - Can't set up a default Virtual Machine.

Am trying to set-up a virtual machine on 64bit Surface Pro 2 system using Hyper-V Manager but after clicking Finish to create a default VM the New VM Wizard displays a window stating:

The Virtual Machine Management service encountered an error while configuring the hard disk on virtual machine New Virtual Machine.
Failed to create the virtual hard disk.
The system failed to create
C:\users\public\documents\\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Discs\New Virtual Machine.vhdx

Originally, before setting the machine back to factory settings, I had got past this point creating a WindowsXP VM but was unable to edit the default VM so decided to go back to factory settings. Whilst applying 8.1 updates I found I had now got 8.1 Update 1  - then moving on to setting up VM I got the above error.

Having almost zero Windows experience beyond XP some advice would be greatly appreciated.
I see two options, one to go back to a USB system image 8.1 upgrade 1 or
revert to 8.1 recovery factory image

Intermittent 100% CPU on all VMs

$

We're a small shop, running Hyper-V 2012 R2 on a Dell T420 (dual CPU, only one present, 6 cores) w/32GB RAM as our main server. We have only 5 VMs, one of which is our WSE 2012 DC.

From time to time, and at a rate for which we've not been able to establish a reliable pattern, all of our VMs concurrently spike to 100% CPU. The host remains quiet at 4-5%. A host warm boot doesn't provide relief, but a cold boot at least puts things back in the box until the problem reoccurs.

Sometimes we can get a week or more of calm seas out of it; sometimes only a day. An unreliable pattern seems to be that it kicks off sometime during an extended idle period, i.e. overnight. An examination of the server's temperature logs first led us to suspect overheating, but further investigation into recent incidents have spoiled that lead.

We also found descriptions of similar problems on the Dell forums, with claims of resolution by installing the latest round of Dell updates. We recently engaged in a project to do just that (as an aside, it was quite an adventure getting ~700GB of VHDs safely off of and then back onto that machine), but to our utter dismay it didn't help.

We're absolutely befuddled. So is Microsoft support (or at least first tier support is, even though they try not to act like it). I'm including below our SystemInfo output, as well as a screen shot of the host's TaskManager CPU page.

Does anyone know where to start looking?

Thanks

Windows 2012 standard server with Hyper-V

There are two Broardcom NICs and one for management and another one for Virtual Network

I noticed that if I ping VM's the virtual network adapter, it is very slow.

I disabled TCP offload and checksum on physical and VMs.

What else I can try to fix them?

Thank you.
