Hyper-V Issue on Dell Laptops running Windows 8 with an External Drive: "Error: 'General access denied error' (0x80070005)"

Hello,

I cannot access any resources on my external eSATA hard drive when creating a VM in Hyper-V in Windows 8. This includes booting ISOs, making or using VHDs, etc. I receive the error "Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service account does not have permission required to open attachment 'D:\<file location>'. Error: General access denied error. (0x80070005)". There are a few other questions on the forums about this but they've been solved somehow or forgotten about.

I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this and solved the issue. I've attempted troubleshooting this issue half a dozen times over the past month. A number of employees at my company are dealing with it, all which have very similar laptop models. The similar characteristics seem to be:

- Windows 8 / 2012
- Solid State Drive for the system drive (which is why it's always dealing with the larger external drive)
- Dell e6420 laptop or similar model
- Drivers up-to-date according to Dell but still warnings in devmgmt for (at least) "Mass Storage Controller" and "Unknown Device"

This issue did not occur with the same configuration on Windows 7. It does not occur on previous generations of Dell laptops or on dissimilar models. VMs run just fine on the system drive.

Here are some of the tactics I've tried already:

- Setting permissions to Full Control for "Everyone" and the specific Hyper-V accounts in the UI and through icacls
- Complete reinstallation of operating system
- Firmware and driver updates even if they seemed unnecessary
- Removal of BitLocker from both drives and then again after re-encryption

Thanks in advance for any help... even if you're just pointing me in a general direction.

I am new to HyperV and trying to find out that if I have my ISO image(that has linux OS) that is currently developed to work on VMWare, will it work as is on HyperV or do I need to make any change in ISO image to run it on HyperV?

Thanks,

Hi Everyone,

I have a VM running on Hyper V Serer 2008 Enterprise SP2. The guest OS is also running Server 2008 SP2

My VM is blue screening on startup. Same happens if I try and boot into safe mode. One of the messages displayed on the blue screen is  suggestion to run Chkdsk /F.

My question is how can I run Chkdsk on a VM.

BTW Booting into safe mode with  command prompt also blue screen.

Advice welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

Hello World

I have successfully installed SharePoint 2010 Information Worker Demo Virtual Machines on a Windows Server 2008R2 with Hyper-V machine. However, when I attempt to login with the default Username/Password (Contoso\administrator\pass@word1) credentials provided by the Microsoft script it fails. How do I change or manage the Username/Password for the Virtual Machines?

Please help!

Trying to manage Hyper-V 2012 free with Server 2012 Essentials VM

I have installed Hyper-V 2012 Free on a test box and then put on a Windows  Server 2012 Essentials VM.

The WS2012 Essentials is a DC.

Can I use the WS2012 Essentials VM to manage the underlying Hyper-V 2012 ?

To get the VM up and running I used VTUtilities, does remote management offer more options than this GUI utility?

Specifically I will be wanting to install drivers for a raid card and also manage the VMs.

Hyper-V Replica: Hyper-V failed to enable replication .. the handle is in the wrong state .. (0x00002EF3)

Hello,

i am trying to get HV Replica on 2 servers with Hyper-V Server 2012 in a workgroup, based on certificates.
All configuration works well until i actually try to activate replication for a vm. No matter which vm, which direction, what options, i always get the following errormessage:

Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'xxx': The handle is in the wrong state for the requested operation (0x00002EF3). (Virtual Machine ID ...)

I do not find any information in the net about any "handle" or it's "state" and what i can do about this.
Has anyone seen this error and knows more about it?

Hyper-V Console access with FreeRDP

I managed to connect to Hyper-V consoles via FreeRDP, which means that now it's possible to connect to Hyper-V from Linux, Mac OS X and Windows (including Server Core / Hyper-V server), without needing vmconnect / RSAT.

In order to ease thing up I also added a Powershell cmdlet. Here's the blog post about it:

http://www.cloudbase.it/using-freerdp-to-connect-to-the-hyper-v-console/

It would be great if somebody could help in testing it and providing feedback! :-)

Thanks!

Remove Hyper-V

I have recently upgraded a Windows 2008 R2 VM to Windows 2012 and am trying to install RemoteApp. I get an error when trying to install the Hyper-V role saying there is aready a hypervisor running. I have checked and there are several Hyper-V services running, but it continues to say the Hyper-V role is not installed when I try to install Remote Desktop Virtualization Services.

Is there a way to remove these services so i can install them through the add role function?

Thanks in advance,

HyperV VMM Storage for Server 2012

I was reading the Server 2012 Microsoft Press RTM book and it mentioned Scale out File Server as a role in the cluster. Is this preferable to using the CSV after creating the HyperV cluster? If so would the file servers need to have HyperV roles and live in the same cluster to be accessed by VMM and HyperV?

Issue with network adapter not working

Hi,

I have few hyper-v hosts. I just recently converted a physical server to a VM using scvmm2012.

When I boot the VM I see everything is working but not the network adapter.

I have assigned a static ip address to the adapter, but I see there is no packet received on the adapter, no connectivity at all. (It is connected to a virtual switch and bind to same network adapter as all my other VMs that are working)

The VM OS is Windows 2008 R2.

I tried however to remove the network adapter from the VM, I added 2 other network adapters to the VM, but it doesn't show up. It's like it sees only the first network adapter and won't remove it. When I try to add the legacy network adapter the connection works , but the legacy one has only 100Mbps bandwith.

Any help please?

Thank you.

Help understanding CPU usage/resource

Hi, i cant find any god information on how to config cpu usage or why this happens. I have a hyper-v server with 2 cpus and 8 core total. One of my VMs a Windows 7 pro 64-bit is running a java application and can only use one CPU for that. But i cant get that VM to use more than 1% of CPU usage on the hyper-v server. I have tried all different settings but nothing helps. Since its not possible to go higher than 100% on Virtual Machine Limit then it should be possible to let one VM use 10-12% ( 100% / 8 core = 12,5% for each core? ) of the total CPU usage on the server, or? The relative weight dont change anything, i have tried 100, 1000 and 10000 buts its all the same.

Hyper-V paused critical priority

0

Hello,

We run Hyper-V on a couple Server 2008 R2 hosts, and the primary one hosts 11 guests, all Server 2008 R2.  Several of the guests are absolutely critical (namely the one running the Microsoft TMG, which is our firewall / router / VPN server, and the domain controller).  I have only been here since the end of July and have been trying to get things straightened out but am limited in time and resources to set things up the way they need to be.  This VM server is being strangled at the moment in both RAM and disk space, and it has ended up pausing most of the VMs with "paused critical" at least 6 or 7 times, usually late at night or early in the morning, knocking everything offline.  Yes I know we need more disk space, well aware of this and trying to get the new SAN up and running.  Most of the guest VHDs are fixed, some are dynamic (and unfortunately the Exchange server has a terabyte worth of snapshots that I need to merge but cannot afford the massive downtime required to do so at the moment).  I cannot compact any of the VHDs anymore than I already have, cannot be more efficient than I already with conserving disk space, but the data keeps growing (primarily from the Exchange and the MS SQL servers) and growing at a very fast clip.

I'm aware that I'm going to have to deal with Windows pausing the VMs occasionally in the near-term until I get the SAN going for the non database intensive VMs, can't do anything about that right now.  What I want to do is find out if the gateway and domain controller VMs can have *absolute* priority above all the others - interestingly, the gateway usually never pauses, but the domain controller always does so I cannot log into the VPN from home.  I'm working on setting up the DRACs in our Dell servers so I can log in from an entirely independent network but that isn't up yet and I have extremely limited time to work on each of these tasks at hand.  All I want is to ensure the gw and domain controller remain up - the rest can be paused - until I can get the ball rolling elsewhere.  Can I set priority somehow?  Really frustrating that Hyper-V doesn't at least have an option to fire off an alarm email or something, but I have to deal with what I have.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hyper-V Path Not Found while Enabling Replication

Hi,

I have configured a Hyper-V server running Windows 2012 DC edition. I have 3 VM in the server and 1 of the VM, I manage to configure replication without any issue. This VM sync successfully to the replica server.

However, when I try to add another VM to the same replica server, it shows this error:

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'VM name'. The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003).

Any suggestion as to how to fix this? How come 1 VM works and the other not?

Thank you.

[SLES 11 Guest] KVP Daemon Fills up /var/log/messages

0

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this, but... I have an Hyper-V Server with several VMs, one of them is a SLES 11 virtual machine.

I found that the "hv_kvp_daemon" in this vm started writing repeatedly to the syslog a message:

hv_utils: KVP: user-mode registering done.

This gets written over, and over, till the /var filesystem got full. Right now I'm dealing with a 40GB messages file. :(

I found that if I stop the "hv_kvp_daemon", those messages stop getting written. But, why did this happened, and how can I get rid of this?

Cannot create Hyper-V Virtual Machine - General Access Denied 0x80070005 - TrueCrypt

I have the standalone Hyper-V Server 2012 running that I have remotely connected to and I'm trying to create the first VM on it but I'm getting the following error:

From my research, this error comes up with something related to the Intel IPMI driver but I have an Asus motherboard so I didn't think it was the problem. However, I ran the ResetAccess.exe fix anyways and to no surprise it said something like "This version of Windows does not require this fix".

I haven't found any other information about this error but I do suspect it may be the fact that the hard drive is encrypted using TrueCrypt. I have never had any issues relating to the encryption that I've had for years but I mention it because they have a list of "Issues and Limitations" :

http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=issues-and-limitations

Are any of those "limitations" causing the problem? If not, what else can this error mean?

Thank you
