Windows Server 2012 R2 HyperV Migration Query

Hi All,

I have 100 VMs of Windows XP SP3 & Windows Server 2003, spread on Windows Server 2008 SP1 HyperV and Windows Server 2008 R2 HyperV host Servers (Standalone). I need to migrate these all VMs from these host servers to Windows Server 2012 R2 HyperV Cluster? I have SCVMM 2012 SP1 installed in my environment.

How can I achieve this?

From TechNet I could not find the possible way to address this migration.

Thanks & Regards, Kedar

Cannot Remotely Import VM from SMB Share

$

Let me start by saying, I've followed just about every guide I can find on delegation and permissions and virtually everything works just fine except for this...

I created a VM using Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. That server was created on, stored on and exported to a Server 2012 R2 File Server, all using my workstation (Windows 8.1) to remotely manage the Hyper-V server. That should be proof that delegation works perfectly fine (being able to create a VM and export it on the SMB share remotely, right?)

My user account, workstation computer account, and the Hyper-V server account all have full rights to the SMB share (NTFS and Share Permissions). To clarify further, my user account is a domain admin.

However, when I go to import the exact same machine that I JUST exported successfully I get the error: Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location '\\FS01\Hyper-V\Exports\Server2012R2\' - The folder '\\FS01\Hyper-V\Exports\Server2012R2\' could not be found. You might not have permission to access it.

Here are some outputs to show that I've, hopefully, configured everything correctly:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-SmbDelegation FS01
WS
HV02
PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-SmbDelegation HV02
WS

WS:
Get-WSManCredSSP
The machine is configured to allow delegating fresh credentials to the following target(s): wsman/*.domain.local

HV02:
Invoke-Command -ComputerName HV02 -ScriptBlock {Get-WSManCredSSP}
The machine is configured to allow delegating fresh credentials to the following target(s): wsman/FS01.domain.local

This computer is configured to receive credentials from a remote client computer.

FS01:
Invoke-Command -ComputerName FS01 -ScriptBlock {Get-WSManCredSSP}
The machine is not configured to allow delegating fresh credentials.
This computer is configured to receive credentials from a remote client computer.

I should also not that it works fine if I remote desktop to the HV02 server and do the import.

Encounter Error when trying to inspect VHD

Hi Hyper V Guru,

I am trying to do inspect on the disk of my VM by right clicking the VM-> select settings -> Select Hard Drive -> and click on the Inspect. However I am encountering the error message: "An Error occurred attempting to connect to the virtual disk management service on computer 'localhost'. Cannot connect to the RPC service on computer 'localhost'. make sure your RPC service is running. what is actually the issue that happen?

Second query: how do I accurately confirm that my VM has no snapshot?

Third Query: if my disk is fixed vhd disk, is it possible to expand it? what are the best procedures and steps of doing this task? what I should notice properly before expanding? will there be any risk of expanding VHD? as this is our production exchange server and very critical, I am really worry of doing this.

Thanks for your attention.

Henry

Hi

We have 2 X Windows 2012 Datacenter edition host servers configured with Hyper V clustering. With the cluster on each server there are 2 high available virtual servers which are again clustered and using for Symantec EV and MS SQL 2008 R2 which is working perfectly fine.

Later on these 2 host servers we assigned additional LUNs and configured virtual servers, which are not part of cluster for the development team. We received below error while restarting some of the servers

Later we removed the attached SCSI controllers (1-3) which are configured on physical drives  I-K and then local virtual servers started successfully. Here we doubt this happened due to the drive letters used by the disks which are now part of clustered shared volumes.

We are looking for advise of configuring independent virtual servers on hosts which are part of Hyper-V cluster

Thanks in Advance

Create Virtual NICs of a Teamed Interface

Dear All,

I am building a Hyper-V Failover Cluster.  I have created a team (two physical nics) which I plan to only use for Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration.  I have following questions:

1.  How to create virtual NICs out of this teamed interface and assign them to respective networks?

2.  Do Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration Networks have to be on different subnet or they can be part of the same subnet as well?

3.  In both cases that is same subnet or different subnet, how would networks be assigned?

Thanks in advance.

Win 2012 shared-nothing live migration slow performance

Hello,

i have two standalone hyper-v servers - A) 2012 and  B) 2012 r2.

I tried live migration on non-shared storage between them. The functionality is alright but performance is low. The copying take a long time with max 200 Mbps.

I am not able to find the bottleneck. Network a disk performance seems to be good. It is 1Gbps network and when I tried simple copy paste the vhd file from A to B through cifs protocol, the speed was about almost full 1Gbps - it was nice and fast.

Is it feature? I am not able reach full network performance with shared-nothing live migration.

Thank you for reply

sincerely

Hyper-V Only able to run one VM at a time

Hi all,

I have Hyper-V set up with about 3 VM's on Server 2012, but i can only seem to run one VM at a time.

The server has the following:

32GB Ram

1TB HD with 425GB free

When i have one of them started and running, it works just fine.

As soon as i try to run a 2nd VM, i get the following error:

"'PC1' failed to start.

Microsoft Synthetic Mouse (Instance ID 58F75A6D-D949-4320-99E1-A2a2576D581c): Failed to Power on with Error 'The name limit for the local computer network adapter card was exceeded."

I have tried to do the following:

  • Disable all networking on each guest VM
  • Removed DVD Drive
  • Increase MAC range
  • Set static MAC
  • Changed boot order to put the CD to the bottom
  • Disable the integration services from each VM
  • Each VM has different netBIOS name
  • Each VM has a different VHD and OS

When starting the 2nd VM, it gets to about 10% and then shows the above error message.

Is there anything anyone can suggest?

Thanks

I am trying to perform a reverse replication after an unplanned failover in a lab environment. I receive the following two errors:

Event ID 32086

Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1' due to a non-recoverable failure. (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83). Resume replication after correcting the failure.

Event ID 32022

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83)

The replication fails at 88% everytime. I can resume replication and it completes. But I am not sure how to start troubleshooting why the failure occurs.

Thanks for the help

Can I change the VMSwitch Bandwidthmode?

$

Hi Folks.

I want to implement Minimummbandwidth on a previously created VMSwitch. Server OS is 2012R2.

I've created the switch without the parameter -Minimumbandwidthmode. So for me it looks like that this switch is in mode absolute.

get-vmswitch xxx | fl * -> BandwidthReservationMode : Absolute

When I specifiy the -Minimumbandwidthmode as "Weight" it shows

get-vmswitch xxx | fl * -> BandwidthReservationMode : Weight

According to the technet http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848455.aspx it should be either absolute or weight depending on hardware or parameter.

Anyway, when I want to set the minimumbandwidth of a connected vnic I got.

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -name Cluster -ManagementOS -MinimumBandwidthWeight 3
Set-VMNetworkAdapter : Failed while modifying virtual Ethernet switch connection settings.

I can not find anywhere a possibility to change the mode and it will be difficult to move to a new VMSwitch as it is already productive!

Does anyone have an idea?

Olaf

Virtual Machine Interface Configuration

Dear All,

I am building a Hyper-V Failover cluster.  I have created two teamed interfaces which comprise of two physical NICs.  One team is assigned to Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration.  The other teamed interface I plan to use is for Virtual Machines.  I have following questions with regards to configuring the virtual machines teamed interface:

1.  Since, virtual machines would be of different subnet on the host, what needs to be configured on the teamed interface in order for it to support multiple VLANs? what other settings on the vms would be required?

2. How would I be managing multiple VLANs on the host?

3.  What needs to be configured on the port/switch for such a configuration?

Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1. Hyper-V Windows 2012 R2 Preview

Hello,

I am new to Hyper-V. I installed Windows Server 2012 R2  Preview on a physical server and installed Hyper-V role on it.

I am trying to install Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V as a guest OS.

From Hyper-V manager, I created a VM and supplied 2008 R2 ISO as a boot device.

Windows 2008 R2 ISO is bootable. I have used the same ISO on VMware and it works.

I connected the VM and powered on, but OS instalaltion doesn't start.

I get error " Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1." Below is th screen capture.

How to fix this problem ?

How do I go to Hyper-v VM BIOS settings ?

How do I change the boot sequence for Hyper-V VM ?

Thanks ! Jayawardhane

Guest Clustering Network

I am unclear how to create the networks required for my guest cluster. The public network is not a problem as I can create a network adapter using the virtual switch named "Public".  The problem is with the iSCSI and other cluster networks, ie heartbeat.

I have four nodes in my host cluster running 2012R2.  Each node has two physical nics dedicated for the iSCSI/storage network configured with MPIO.  Can I use these nics for my guest cluster or do I need more physical nics to support my guest cluster?

Thanks

Hyper-V replica issue in multi domain environment

$

Hi,

I'm working on a solution to deploy Hyper-V replica's. The situation is:

Forest1:
Hyper-V Cluster: Cluster1.domain1.local
Hyper-V Replica: Replica1.domain1.local (primary)

Forest2:
Hyper-V Cluster: Cluster2.domain2.local
Hyper-V Replica: Replica2.domain2.local (backup)

I have set up a Two-way Forest full trust between both domains/forests. I can access all resources in either domain from the other domain. Ping, Cifs, DNS resolution is all working in two-way direction.

Now when I try to set up the replica I end up with the error below.

Also in domain2.local in the eventlog I see the following event message:

Hyper-V failed to authenticate the primary server using Kerberos authentication. Error: The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. (0x800703E3)

Source: Hyper-V-VMMS
Eventid: 29212

Looking for this error brought me to several posts to check e.g. ServicePrincipalName, Klist purge, but none helped. I personally think the multi-domain factor makes it extra difficult, but it should work according to Microsoft.

Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Enhanced Session Mode but 8.1 VM stuck with Basic Display Adapter

Server 2012 R2 (GUI, and Hyper-V enabled). Enhanced Session Mode Policy set to "Allow..." on Server and "Use if..." on User.  Hardware is Asus P9X79, socket 2011 i7, 24G, etc. RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter set to show Maximum number of monitors = [2]. Server is not part of a domain (i.e., it is WORKGROUP).

Graphics card is GeForce GTX 650 with current NVIDIA driver (tried the Beta but that didn't fetch.) The NVIDIA control panel (on the server) shows correct monitor identifiers (they are not the same). "Screen Resolution" on the server shows both monitors and their correct identifiers.

All drivers (including motherboard and Intel for the i7) are up to date.

Guest is Windows 8.1 (Gen I volume).

<symptoms>Whenever I "Connect..", the "Screen Resolution" dialog shows a single monitor with an incorrect identifier. The "Adapter Type" says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter identified with an IBM SVGA BIOS "Chip type".  The mobo has *NO* video hardware on it. Nada. None. (I thought the Windows 8.1 Device Manager was supposed to show the display adapter to be "Microsoft RemotFX Graphics Device - WDDM".) I even tried installing the NVIDA drivers in the VM - but the installation program couldn't find any NVIDA devices.</symptoms>

All I want to do is learn NVIDIA CUDA and MSFT AMP while I'm at home. I'm a MSFT partner so this is not my first dance and the company I work for is more concerned with storage and networking so I can't put NVIDIA GPUs on any of my other Hyper-v servers. Since I can't get a Windows 8.1 VM configured for two monitors, I've got a feeling my chances of becoming familiar with GPGPU programming are between slim and none. HELP!

Server 2012 HyperV - Replication - Merge In Progress

$

I have been trying to enable Replication on WSUS VM and having some issues.

As soon as I enable it.. the status says "Enabling Replication..." then changes to Merge in Progress and fails.

It thinks there is a file existing somewhere. I went to the Replica server and removed the Replication then delete the VM.
I then went on Replica server and checked the folders/files for 2CBDACFA-0064-41F8-BBFD-90BAEC8CA0E4.

Hyper-V failed to generate initial replica for 'WSUS': Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7). (Virtual Machine ID 2CBDACFA-0064-41F8-BBFD-90BAEC8CA0E4)

After carrying out all the steps above I then try and Enable Replication... as soon as it enables it then tries to Merge in Progress and fails with the error message again.

Anyone have any ideas where to turn?

Thanks,
Adam

Hyper-V Failover Cluster - 4 NIC - QoS

$

Dear All,
Please have a look at the link below:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj735302.aspx#bkmk_1

I am trying to achieve the third configuration (4 NICs in two teams), which is thrid on the list.

I have built two NIC Teams as suggested in the configuration.  One for Virtual Machines (Switch Independent, Hyper-V Port) and one for Management OS (Switch Independent, Dynamic).  The TCP/IP Settings on NIC Team for Virtual Machines has everything configured that is IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS.  The TCP/IP Settings on the NIC Team for Management OS has only IP Address and Subnet Mask defined.

1.  Is this the only configuration required at Management OS NIC Team or do i need to provide the Gateway and DNS as well? How will two-2 Gateways be handled if gateway is required on both teams? or they will work?

2.  Secondly, how will I be adding tNICs to the NIC Team for ManagementOS for Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration? What would be the TCP/IP settings (IP Address, Gateway, DNS) on those three tNICs? would they need to be on different networks, i.e. different network address for all three tNICs?

3.  Thirdly, how will I be adding vNICs to virtual switch of hyper-v in case there are virtual machines who are from different VLANs? What configuration is required on the hyper-v for different VLANs to work on virtual machines?

4.  Fourthly, what would be configuration required on the network/switch level?

5.  Is configuration for both teams correct?

Thanks in advance.
