HyperV Lab + Working Environment

Hi,

What I have is a box with HyperV Server 2012 core with 2 physical NICs installed. In this box, I'll installed Windows SBS as one of the VM and this will be acting as the main DC.  I want to create two different networks, ie "Work" and "home" network.

I've tried to set the IP address as the following.

Physical NIC #1

Network: Home
IP: 192.168.1.100
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (my modem)
DNS: 192.168.1.1

Physical NIC # 2

Network: Work
IP: 10.10.1.1
Subnet: 255.0.0.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.100
DNS: 10.10.1.5 (Win SBS)

Win SBS IP address: 10.10.1.5
Domain: contoso.com

So I want my work laptop to be able to login to the domain with internet access for me to do work and my non-work (home) laptop to connect to my home. The work laptop will get DHCP from the SBS and home laptop will get DHCP from the modem. Will i be able to do this, if so how and what would be the best way?

I've created two Virtual Switch Manager on HyperV, but not sure whether to set / use External, Internal, Private or External with VLAN. I'm not sure how VLAN will work in this. Thanks

Windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter : How to create Hyper-V which will be the replica of host OS

Hello Everyone,

Recently we purchased a brand-new IBM server and installed Windows 2012 R2 Datacentre, SQL server 2012, TFS server 2013, etc.

We would like to generate the hyper-v (VHD) file which will the replica of the above OS and will run as guest OS from the above server. Can anybody advise me how to develop the hyper-v, VHD file of Windows 2012 R2 Datacentre host OS?

If in case I required to do the all installation again on a new Hyper-V machine then can I generate the C:\ and D:\ partitions same as what I did on host operating system?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Ankit Shah

Physical Host is a brand new Windows 2012 R2 with hyper-v role, VM is a Windows Server 2012

I try to upgrade the integration services update, VM become unresponsive and I lost connection to it,  had to turn it off, afterwards it wouldn't boot.

Tried F8 on the reboot and then switched to the command prompt to manually upgrade the integration services running the setup, but got an error (Error code: 50 )

VM halts in the middle of booting up.

saying: Please wait ...

Anyone has any idea why it happened and how to fix this?

No external network access from virtual machine

Hello:

I'm configuring a Windows Server 2012 Standard with Hyper-V and want to share a network card so that both the virtual machine and the host access a LAN using the same wire.

HOST SYSTEM:

OS: Windows Server 2012 Standard

IP: 192.168.50.1

VIRTUAL MACHINE: Windows XP

IP: 192.168.50.4

PHYSICAL SWITCH (CISCO):

IP: 192.168.50.6

I've configured an external virtual switch, assigned to it a physical card and activated the sharing between host and virtual machine.

With this configuration:

ping from HOST to VM and viceversa: OK

ping from HOST to REAL SWITCH: OK

ping from VM to REAL SWITCH: FAIL

If I configure the network card to work exclusively with the VM, it can access the external switch from the VM, but I lose any connection with the host.

I could solve the problem installing another physical card and using one for the host and one for the VM, but I can't get both working with the same card, even though they are in the same subnet, see each other, share files between VM and host... I'm not trying to connect to the internet.

Any idea? Thanks.

Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Replica fails with 'operation not supported'

I have a VM I am attempting to replicate from Hypervisor in Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V replica server running Server 2012 R2, and when I attempt to do this it fails with a generic error message of:

"Enabling Replication Failed.

Adding replication settings of '<servername>' failed.

The operation is not supported."

I am replicating every other VM to this server (50+) so its not a configuration issue, and I am doing this over port 80 so its not a cert issue. I cant find anything in the event logs of the hypervisor when I initiate the replication, or on the replica server. This VM does have an ISCI binding, but the error message doesn't seem to relate to this. I read here where some folks are talking about specific messages around failed ISCI disks, which is not what I'm getting. They suggested disabling the Backup and data integration services, which I cannot do as pausing the VM is not an option. So I guess my question is twofold, is this related to ISCSI, and if so is there a way to setup Hyper-V replica without disabling backup and data integration? If it isnt related to ISCSI, what can I do to try and troubleshoot this?

Hi Guys

I am have some problems with testing dhcp relay in my lab environment

I have 2 subnets   172.16.1.X /24   and 172.16.2.x/24 I have windows server 2012 r2 routing between the 2

I have added the dhcp relay in routing , but no help

Dhcp is not giving ip address in the 172.16.2.x / subnet   1 subnet is working fine

I have created a scope for it as well

Routing is working as I can ping between the subnets

Does dhcp relay require a VLAN for dhcp relay to work?

All VMs are using internal nic

I don't have a managed switch around to create VLAN

Please help???

Hyper-v usability - Stopping-Critical

I recently bought a new system, which works just fine. I installed Windows 2012 R2, installed a SSD drive and 3 Western Digital 4Tb Red drives. I've created my Storage pools and installed the hyper-v role. I've also patched Windows through the normal Windows update process. I started building the 1st VM machine on this system.

What I'm noticing is that the VM will tend to go into a critical state. If I stop it the machine will go into a stopping-critical state. If I leave the machine running it can sometimes go into a running-critical state. Restarting the host machine doesn't solve the problem. Restarting the Hyper-v server doesn't seem to resolve the issue either. And more importantly, it seems that the Hyper-v management interface refreshes VMs slowly. Note, the rest of Windows operates great. The switches and buttons inside Hyper-v respond fine, but the VMs don't work hardly at all. I've tried using generation 1 and generation 2 VMs, it doesn't tend to make much of a difference.

I thought at first that maybe my drives were just slow so I created a new VM on my SSD, which does something like 90,000 IOPS and tried it there. I get the same behavior. I think this issue looks like a coding problem with Hyper-v more so than an environment problem with Windows or the hardware.

Is this a known issue by Hyper-v? Why do VMs go into a critical state so often? What's the deal?

What logs are best to look at in this situation?

HyperV only allowing 1 guest to access the default gateway at one time

Hello

We have a 2012R2 Standard HyperV Server with 4 NIC's in a Team.

There is a Virtual Switch using the "Teamed" Adaptor.

The HyperV Host has two guest operating systems.

Server1 is able to ping the default gateway and access the internet until Server2 is rebooted. Then server1 can not ping the default gateway or access the internet until it is rebooted then Server2 cannot access the internet or ping the default gateway.

Both servers can ping themselves fine.

We have gone over the configuration of the router with SonicWall who have advised that it is not a SonicWall issue as the packets are not been received by the SonicWall.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hyper-V Storage

I have a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V server with a physical partition consisting of 2 SSDs in RAID-1. I want to dedicate this entire physical partition to a SQL Server VM (OS, databases, log files, everything). What I've done is created a single vhdx file that is the maximum allowable size on that partition (in other words, I have a 100GB vhdx file stored on a 100GB physical partition).

My question is, is this the right way to go about doing it? Or should I configure these physical disks to be directly attached to the VM as outlined here.

No Network connectivity from Host to Guest and vice versa

I hope someone here can point me at the right direction. It is somewhat critical as the machine that failed is our second DC. I have a Hyper-V host with two guests running on it. No changes have been made to the host or the failing guest machine. The host can talk to the other VM and vice versa. The host has an external network configured and has a checkbox for sharing the network adapter checked. The VM that is failing is using that particular network. Failing VM has a static IP configured within the same subnet as the host. I cannot ping the VM from the host and VM cannot ping the host. File and printer sharing is enabled on the guest. Let me know what kind of additional info I can provide but I'll start with the above.

Hi All,
We have a 10 Hyper V host (newly added) and each host containing about  8VMs.
we have monthly patching and we need to make sure that the patches gets applied to the host and the VMs.
This is the first time I would be working on patching the Hyper V host. The version we use is :
Hyper-V Manager

Microsoft Corporation

Version: 6.1.7601.17514
could someone please let me know what are the best practices and consideration need to be taken care for the patching?
I don't think we have option to migrate the VMs to the other host...do we?
we have downtime of about 8hours for the patching.
Thanks,
S.Mani

"we couldn't complete the features undoing changes" on activating Hyper V

$

I've been looking for this error all over the internet, and I can't find any solution.

So I have a Sony Vaio Notebook with Windows 8.1 64 bits Enterprise installed.

I have SLAT feature (I downloaded a small application to check and it says I have it all) , I also have activated Intel Virtualization in the BIOS. When I go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Enable or disable Windows Features, I go to Hyper V and check"Hyper V Platform" , it applies the updates, asks to restart computer, and it does, then it goes normally, starts to update, restarts the windows and it goes up to 100% and in the end it says: "We couldn't complete the features undoing changes" and restarts my windows once again and says: "we couldn't complete the updates undoing changes"

What do I have to do to fix this?

I think the problem is on the "We couldn't complete the features undoing changes" , what are the possible solutions to this error message?

Thanks.

Can we Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 hypervisor on dedicated servers?

$

Hello, guys!

We have our infra on rented dedicated servers at Canadian services provider.

We used to rent and pay their MS licenses (Win2008R2 Ent) on these servers.

Now we want to use  Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 hypervisor on our dedicated servers, because of the smaller footprint, less attck surface, less updates needed to install and no cost.

We installed 5 hosts with Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 hypervisor and now we want to move the rest to it. But their engineer states that "

Unfortunately, if you are going to use Microsoft Server on those servers, I'll have to add the licence as we have an SPLA agreement with Microsoft.

"

Can you please help to clarify if we're allowed to use this hypervisor or not?

Thank you

SAN Switch?

I'm brand new to Hyper-V, so please forgive me.

I'm trying to share disks for a cluster in Hyper-V. I see the Virtual SAN Switch button and sort of assumed I could create a fully virtual SAN Fabric and connect those to fully virtual HBA's on each guest. I think I'm wrong and need some guidance.

Do I need a physical (real) SAN Switch to do this? If so, how can i share disks using Hyper-V and not investing in hardware?

Thanks for any guidance!

powershell commands for VM backups in 2012 vs 2008

$

I have a powershell routine that is used by task scheduler that will shut down one or more Hyper-v VMs from a list, create a backup of the VHD file(s) then restart the VM(s).  It works great in 2008 but when I copied it over to a 2012 host, it didn't do anything.  I was wondering if powershell commands from 2008 still work in 2012 or if they've been completely rewritten.  If they are the same, then I'll assume "operator error" and keep trying.  If they have changed, then I know that I'll be spending my week googling around for how to use the new commands.  Thanks.
