Hyper-V 2012 Standalone Environment

0
0

@MICROSOFT or other Hyper-V Experts

Can someone provide a "SIMPLE" step by step set of instructions to get HYPER-V 2012 working in a workgroup environment. Setting up Hyper-V 2012 seems a bit painful when I compare it to my VMware experiences.

Desired environment scenario:

Hyper-V 2012 (free version)

Windows 8 with RSAT

Installing RSAT and getting Hyper-V installed is a piece of cake. I can get RSAT talking to HV but after that I run into issues with managing it. I am quite sure if it was installed in a domain it would not be an issue, but I need a clean standalone installation instruction set. Suspect numerous others would love the same.

Keep the instructions as simple as possible and assume no locally managed DNS is available - total standalone scenario.

Thanks in advance!

Nic card not working

Good Day,

I am running a Windows 2008R2 SP1 fileserver, I was doing my Oct updates and after rebooting the VM the system came up and was sluggish.  I finally got into the system but noticed that I did not have any network connectivity.  On the lower right I noticed a yellow exclamation point for the network.  I looked over the application logs and System logs and sure enough I was not connecting to the network.  No domain found,  no policy, no time the normal stuff.

I checked device manager and the Nic was there no issues no other issues found in the event logs other than what I wrote above.  I rebooted and the same thing happened.  As a last ditch effort I disabled and then reenabled the Nic and it came up.  So I rebooted again and the same thing happened.  So I know I can reproduce the error.  I have three other servers on the host and I have updated all but one of my servers with the Oct updates.  Hosts are clean no errors.

I am looking for any idea on what could be causing this issue or if anybody has seen this before.

Thanks

Orphaned Virtual Machine Adaptor

Under VMM 2008 R2 / Win 08 R2, I have an orphaned virtual machine adaptor from a failed creation of an internal network.  Hyper-V has no record of the connection but Network Connections shows an unplugged Local Area Connection.  I have tried to remove the adaptor with device manager but it does not work.

Is there any other way to remove an orphaned adaptor?

Thank you,

Hi All,

I just want to configure network configuration.

In my host machine (WIN2012DC),

IP Address details:

vEthernet (External LAN):

IPv4 Address : 169.254.21.76
Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0
Default gateway : Empty

Ethernet adapter Ethernet:
IPv4 Address : 192.168.1.16
Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0
Default gateway : 192.168.1.1

OS : Windows Server 2012 with DC (Enabled AD)

In Hyper-v (WIN2012ALL) instance ,

Ethernet adapter Ethernet
IPv4 Address : 169.254.94.115
Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0
Default gateway : Empty

OS : Windows Server 2012

Currently I just connected my machine with my modem and I have not configured any IP Address
manually.

I want to achieve the followings,

1. I have to provide the internet access to hyper-v instance (WIN2012All)
2. I want to join the hyer-v instance WIN2012All to host machine WIN2012DC

Since the SharePoint 2013 beta will not install in DC and I need a above setup.
I am not a network guy and please some one help me to fix this issue.

Trouble attaching physical hard disk in Stand-alone Hyper-V 2012

I am attempting to teach myself Hyper-V and am having trouble attaching a physical HD to a guest. Disk Hardware is as follows:

Disk 1 is a 128GB SSD SATA drive with the Host OS (Standalone Hyper-V 2012)

Disk 0 is a 1.5TB SATA drive - blank

I'm managing the environment from a Windows 7 machine with RSAT installed and working fine. Both machines are in a simple workgroup, no domains.

Using diskpart on the server, I've done the following:

  • LIST DISK
  • SELECT DISK 0
  • CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
  • FORMAT QUICK
  • OFFLINE DISK

Disk 0 shows as offline, but when I attempt to attach it on my Guest machine, the "Add physical hard disk" is greyed out completely. Obviously I'm missing something here - can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?

Server mirroring

I have a set up that I am planning to create using two Hyper-V servers, I have the two servers set up in fail over cluster mode. I have created two domain controllers: DC01 and DC02, I was just wanting to know if there is a way of mirroring the changes that are made on DC01 over to DC02?

This is to save me time when setting this up as i will have to configure DC01 and configure DC02 afterwards which seems that it is going to take a long time.

Thanks.

2012 Hyper-V, install server core or server standard

This is a small office scenerio with a few VMs with no requiremement for HA.  Server 2012 standard gives one physical license + 2 virtual on a two socket server.

2012 Enterprise wouldn't make sense unless we needed over 10 VMs.

If I use server core I would like to have the GUI snapin to manage it so that means I would need either Windows 8 or Server 2012 running someplace.

There is no cost difference if I say install 2012 physical with Hyper-V role standalone as the host vs  server core.  If I install 2012 physical I have the GUI management built in.

Are there any obvious reasons why server core would be better than 2012 ph\ysical host in the above?

Using Test-ClusterResourceFailure

When using the "Test-ClusterResourceFailure" cmdlet, will any vms go offline that are running on the affect CSV?

CSV stuck in redirected access...

We are running Windows Datacenter 2008 R2 SP1 in our Failover Cluster, on 3 Hyper-V hosts, using Commvault to backup the vhds.  There was a backup in progress that I killed from the Commvault server and that ended properly.  Now the CSV is stuck in "Online (Backup in progress, Redirected Access)" mode.  I cannot "Turn off redirected access for this CSV" either and I can't "Move this shared volume to another node" as I am told "Backup in progress.  Please wait for backup completion before trying this operation again."  But the backup is no longer running so I am stuck.  I also checked for disk shadows and there are not any.  How can I clear this up with taking any of the VMs running on this CSV offline?  Thanks.

What can you virtualize?

Hi all

Question: We run 99% of Windows Server 2003 servers, with Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005/2008. If I was to purchase new hardware and Windows Server 2012 Datacenter and run Hyper-V 2012 what are the caveats, if any, of converting physical Server 2003 Domain Controllers, Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005/2008 to VM's? I know the newer version take advantage of virtualizing just unsure if you can or should do it with the versions listed here.

Thanks

Windows 8 Guest slows down when not in use - Hyper-V Core 2012

I recently switched from Hyper-v Core 2008R2 to Hyper-V Core 2012, and ever since I have problems with a Windows 8 VM.

The server runs a Windows Server 2008R2 standard VM and a Windows 8 Pro VM. Both have sufficient resources availalbe (it's run on a Core i5 2500 with 8GB of RAM), and I have not seen either of them requesting more resources (they are both allowed to request more RAM).

Since the switch to 2012, the Windows 8 VM has been slowing down when not in use. It goes to the point that if I connect to it, it takes a minute before it responsive. It even takes a while before I get see the desktop.

The Windows Server 2008R2 on the other hand still runs as smooth as before.

This would not be such a big issue if the W8 machine did not have applications running that need access to the network an copy large amounts of data. The network connection is frequently dropped while in "slow" state, and will continue to do so until I connect with remote desktop or the hyper-v manager.

It almost looks like some sort of power saving mode. I don't mind this, but it should be able to accomplish automated tasks.

Windows 2012 Doesn't See EPT or Virtualization support on i7-3930k

Hello all, hoping someone has an idea of what to check...

I'm trying to set up a brand new box with Windows Server 2012 server w/Hyper-V... specifically I'm looking to get RemoteFX working.  The RemoteFX option is currently greyed out and is complaining about no SLAT support.  I've download and run coreinfo, CPU-Z and Intel's Processor ID Utility.  Sure enough, all of them show no support for EPT or VT.

The Intel ARK does show these features supported on the i7-3930k, and I've verified I do have the C2 stepping version to that has EPT.

Even more curious, I installed Win2k8 R2 to see if it was also having issues, all three CPU utilities saw both EPT and VT without any issues at all.  This tells me I do indeed have a CPU that supports EPT and VT as well as I do have them enabled within the BIOS.

What would cause Windows Server 2012 to not see these features but Windows Server 2008 to see them just fine?  I've got all the drivers I can locate installed on Win2k12, however, a fresh install of Win2k8 R2 without any additional drivers(literally, as soon as Windows booted into the OS the first time I used a USB drive to transfer over coreinfo, CPU-Z and Intel Proc ID Util) see's these features just fine.

Am I missing something obvious?  Is there some sort of driver missing?  Is a driver even needed to detect EPT & VT(since Win2k8 R2 saw them just fine without additional drivers)?

Any help is appreciated!

Hyper-V cluster with ENT, licensing in-place upgrade to datacenter question

0
0

Right now we have a Hyper-V cluster with 3 nodes (Windows Server Enterprise) and a SAN (cluster shared volumes) and 50 virtual machines (all running Windows Server Standard).

We have 3 Windows Server ENT licenses and say that we would have 38 Windows Server STD licenses (right now we some more); 38 because the 3 ENT licenses are covering 12 guests (4 each), so that 38 additional lics would be required to cover all 50 guests.

I understand that during normal operation, this is fine. However, when one of the nodes fails or is taken down for maintenance, its guests will temporarily be moved to the other two nodes. Now, my questions:

1) Is it still so that this contradicts the product use rights (that is, 4 licenses will be missing because the 4 included in the offline node's ENT license don't count anmore)? Or have the PUR been modified recently to cover such situation?

2) Apart from the 4 missing licenses in that case (which could be solved by getting 42 instead of 38) - what about the "license reassignment" issue? Still, in case of maintenance we would "reassign" a license to a different physical server and then back to the original server again within less than 90 days.

3) In case that we decide to go for Datacenter instead of Enterprise edition - is a kind of in-place ugprade possible? That is, move all guests from Node1 to other nodes, then upgrade Node1 to Datacenter edition, then move all guests from Node2 etc. ... I read that this should be possible (though not supported), but there are also contradicting statements. (We have full version of Enterprise installed, not Core, and would also use the GUI version of Datacenter.)

4) I understand that moving to Hyper-V server would not be possible since GUI and Core installations can't be mixed in the same cluster (that is, not only that it is not supported but it really is not possible) - is that true?

Thanks for some comments!

Microsoft Virtual Machine Conventer - VM is running with a disk configuration that is not supported

I´m running a single instance of Microsoft Virtual Machine Conventer on a client computer, to convert a VM from VMware ESXi 5.1 to a stand-alone Hyper-V 2012.

At the end of a wizard, I get this failure: "Microsoft Virtual Machine Conventer The VMware specified VM with host name is running with a disk configuration that is not supported."

The disk of source VM is scsi 0:0.

I didn´t find any other source of this issue, only this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg610672.aspx

Hi folks

I need to configure RemoteFX on my Windows 8 VM.  I am running Server 2012 Standard 64 bit.

My hardware is a Lenovo T410 which is SLAT enabled.

I have added the Remote Desktop Virtualization role and rebooted, but RemoteFX in my VM settings remains greyed out.  Am I missing anything?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Guest OS cant access host hyper-v's IP Address in hosted environment/intenret

Hi all.

I recently got a hosted dedicated server and have just installed the Hyper-V role on Windows 2008R@. I have also created an external virtual network using the hosts server's single network card. When I have created a new virtual machine, the IP address of the guest NIC does not take on the values from the host and as such I am unable to access the internet via the host.

I thought I would need to have more static IP addresses and as such purchased a few and tried to assign a new static ip address on the guest NIC and populate the other network details as per the hosts, but I still cant access the network.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Hyper-V only local connection

I have a laptop for training purposes only. I have installed Server 2008 enterprise. I have installed Active Directory, DNS, and DCHP. I then created a virtual hard drive and machine in Hyper-V. I installed Server 2008 on this drive as well. I set the tcp/ip connections statically and I pointed the dns of the virtual machine back to the DNS server.  However, it only ever gets a local connection. When I go to manage

Cluster Shared Volumes will need single volume or separate

Hi all,

i am going to install hyper v failover clustering, 6 guest OS going to install on host server.

My doubt is each Guest OS need separate partition and attach to  Cluster Shared Volumes or only one large single partition then configure Cluster Shared Volumes and create VHD for each guest OS   ? which will be the best configuration?
