Boot failure with copied VHD image from Windows 7

$

I've created a new virtual machine with a VHD image that I've copied from Windows 7 to the Hyper-V server. This image was created on Windows 7 (Windows 7 64-bit), and I'm using it on Windows 7 as boot image. Starting this virtual machine with the Hyper-V Manager gives this error: "Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device."

I've checked the security on the VHD with cacls and icacls and it's ok.
What can I do to boot this image?

Thanks,
Christian

"BOOTMGR is missing" error when I use bootable VHD in Hyper-V manager.

I have Windows 2008 R2 RC x64 bit VHD that I created for native boot. Then I decided to use this VHD from Hyper-V manager.

I created new VM and added that bootable VHD as HDD.
But, when I try to start this VM in Hyper-V manager system can't boot, saying "BOOTMGR is missing" (but I still able to boot natively from this VHD)

Are there any workarounds for this?!
I have the same Windows 2008 R2 RC x64 as host and guest system with the same hardware.
How can I use VHD for native boot and via Hyper-V manager?!

Losing pings only within a Hyper-V cluster.

Good day.

We are experiencing an issue on our VMM based private cloud where pings are failing only for VMs running within the private cloud. We can ping servers on the rest of our network with no apparent issues. We can even ping the cluster nodes that host the private cloud VMs without issues. When we try to ping the VMs though we note between 1%-3% in missed pings.

We've tried a couple of tests to try and isolate this to see if it could be related to our older, non-IPv6 aware, hardware switches but have not seen any significant change in the behavior. One test we attempted was to take the NIC connections for one of the nodes that are connected to the vSwitch that the VMs are running on and place those two connections on a different physical switch to see if this was some kind of address space issue from the switch perspective. This test resulted in no change to the behavior and the ping loss of 1-3% continued.

At this point we suspect that this is a configuration issue on our part, but we're not having much luck figuring out how to best troubleshoot this issue. Are there any statistics we should be looking at from the VM, vSwitch, or Hyper-V level that might help us better identify the root cause of this issue?

We are running an 8 node Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster with several post SP1 patches loaded on it. We are also running SCVMM 2012 Update 2. The VM networks are running off of a pair of teamed Broadcom NICs on each host with a separate set of teamed NICs for all of our iSCSI and Cluster network.

Any input or thoughts would be appreciated.

Server 2012: Enabling Hyper-V Replica Site to Site Failure

$

We recently installed Server 2012 Data Center with Hyper-V on a two servers at two different sites: Main Site and DR Site.

Hyper-V is enabled and working great at both sites on these servers and now trying to configure Hyper-V replica gets us this result:

Some of the items we made sure to verify:

  • Enabled Firewall rules for inbound rules on Port 80. (Hyper-V Replica HTTP Listener) (Both Sites)
  • Modified ASA Firewall for HTTP port 80 and can run a packet trace from site to site.
  • Ping works fine in communication between servers
  • Both are in the same domain
  • Within the same Trust Group
  • Same default storage location and can view the folder from each location

So I am not sure what we are missing, but is there another port that needs to be open if we are going through HTTP because after starting to configuring the replica another message shows that "Could not get the configuration details of the specified server."

Searching around on TechNet didn't show any resolution for this, but if anyone would have some additional tips to try to troubleshoot that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

An error occurred while communicating with the remote host

I recently moved an ASP.NET application to a virtual environment. Users starting complaining of lost connections, and in checking the logs I found several errors with the text ' An error occurred while communicating with the remote host' and different error numbers.

I have researched the various solutions in the online forums and disabled TCP, TSO & Checksum offloading, turned off power management etc. However, I still the same error message sporadically. The NIC is a vmxnet3 Ethernet Adapter.

Before looking for a solution, I'd like to understand the context of the error message: which process is unable to communicate and to which host? Is it the ASP.NET worker process unable to communicate with the 'host'  IIS?

And of course any other possible solutions other than adding NICs, that is not an option I have in a virtual hosted environment.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V 2012 Cluster / Flex-10

Hey all!

So I'm in the process of deploying the first Hyper-V (2012) cluster to compare against our vSphere infrastructure and possibly migrate to Hyper-V.

The 2 Hyper-V hosts are sitting on 2 BL460G8 blades w/ an extra Flex10 Mezz card in each (4 10GB ports in each blade), and this moves back to 2 Flex-10 modules on the back side of a C3000 enclosure.

Some of the bandwidth for the two hosts is dedicated to iSCSI HBA's. I'm curious how some of you would carve out the rest of the bandwidth. If we do migrate to Hyper-V, this will turn into a 8 node Hyper-V cluster. I will have Live Migration and CSV enabled for this cluster as well. I've had a lot of trouble finding any kind of implementation or recommendation for Flex-10 deployments.

What I'm thinking so far is:

  • Management Team - 1Gb
  • Cluster Team - 1Gb
  • Live Migration Team - 4Gb
  • CSV Team - 4Gb
  • VM Team - 14Gb

What I'm curious about is, should I merge Cluster, Live Migration, and CSV together for 9Gb or maybe just CSV and Live Migration or just leave it all alone.

Does anyone that has done a Hyper-V 08 R2 (or newer) deployment on Flex-10 gear have any recommendations?

Win2008 R2 Guest OS VM Not Recognizing Windows 8 Display Adapter

Hi All,

Greetings. I am running Windows 8 RTM in Lenovo Thinkpad W510 4391-BZ5 with Nvidia Quadro FX-880M Video Adapter (Driver Version 9.18.13.697 dt 02-Oct-2012) and the monitor is ThinkPad Display 1920x1080 (Driver version 5.0.0.0 dt 30-Jul-2012).

I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 within Windows 8 Hyper-V client and somehow the guest OS does not recognize the host OS' Video/Display adapters/drivers correctly and is resorting to a generic Microsoft Hyper-V Video (Driver Version 6.2.9200.16384 dt 21-Jun-2006) with 1. (Default Monitor) on Microsoft Hyper-V Video.

Because of this, the Hyper-V window occupies only a portion of the actual screen size requiring lot of scrolling up/down and left/right within the hyper-v window and the display therefore is also smaller. I tried playing with different screen resolution settings both on host and client OS but the Hyper-V windows size still does not occupy the full screen - it only enlarges the screen size within the available window leading to even more scrolling.

I tried installing Leveno Driver for NVidia Quadro FX-880M from within the Hyper-V (6md643ww.exe Windows 7 64-bit version) but the installation fails with the message "Installation Cannot Continue... This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware".

I would appreciate if anyone could suggest any remedies for configuring the display adapter correctly (kindly email to kmurali_sg@hotmail.com). Thanks a ton in advance. I have seen this working in a different machine (same model/configuration) but in spite of reloading the OS/etc the situation does not change.

Thanks & Regards,

K. Muralidharan

HyperV HDD Performance in host very slow

$

I've been happily running HyperV on Windows Server 2008 & 2008 R2 for the last couple of years. My Servers are really big PCs, so nothing special.

I've taken the mobo that used to be my HyperV server, and installed Windows 8 on it. It has 16GB RAM & 3.1 GHz Quad core so quite capable of running 3 or 4 VMs. This is what is was doing with Windows 2008.

I've added HyperV role to Windows 8, and the HDD performance on the host grinds to a halt when more than 1 VM is running. Disk average throughput measured by HD Tune Pro drops from 135MB with no VM, to 44MB with 1, all the way down to 0.7 MB with 4.

Disk Access time drops from 15.3ms to 23.8, then finally 606.8 ms.

My new 'Server' is running the same HDD and does not show a similar drop in performance. It's happily running 6VMs.

I think that leaves 2 possible problems: either the HDD is starting to fail, or HyperV in Windows 8 doesn't work as well as in Server 2008 R2.

Any thoughts? Is it time to replace the HDD?

Thanks

Andrew

Newb: Server Virtualization with 3 Machines...

I am fairly new to virtualization, but I am at a job where I have 3 unused HP Proliant servers, and I would like to somehow combine them in to 1 Virtual Machine, and use that machine to virtualize multiple Windows Servers for different functions (DC, FS, Print server, etc).  What would be the best way to go about doing this?  Each machine has internal drives, so I dont have a SAN.

Thanks!

Hyper-V 2012 Core on Dell R710 with PERC/6i... No Passthrough disks visible.

As the title says.

Two logical disks are handled by the PERC controller.  The first is 2x600GB in RAID1 and contains the core server installation.  The second is 4x2TB in RAID5 and the following has been done in DISKPART...  CLEAN, CONVERT GPT, OFFLINE DISK.  No matter what combination of DISKPART commands I perform, I cannot get the offline 6TB logical disk to appear in Hyper-V as a physical pass-through disk.  I am managing the server using RSAT on a Win7U box, both of which are in the same workgroup and have been properly configured for remote administration.  This is a standalone environment, no AD is available.  BIOS and firmwares all at the latest versions.

Thorough searches of the forums as well as web searches turns up no solutions.  There are similar problems reported, but with an H700 controller (no solution) and others reporting this combination of hardware that works fine for Hyper-V 2008 pass-through.

Hyper-V replication to NAS as backup

$

I have a small office where I want to consolidate some physical servers and add a new server. I have an existing Synology NAS.

Existing servers are Server 2003 with Exchange 2007 , time keeping app and file print on server 2003 and the new one would be server 2008 running SQL.  I don't need high availability. I would do P2V on existing servers. If I use the replication in Hyper-V to snapshot the servers running Exchange and SQL to the NAS  is it using VSS so the logs are truncated as an Exchange or SQL backup would do? Is what I described reasonable?

Administrative Management & Commands for Server 2012

Given I have installed a Win2012 ServerCore, I discovered that 2008 R2 Admins will not see it, nor will SC VMM 2012, so drop a VM win 2012 under it (or a 2008 R2 Host) with the Windows interface and yes there it is and I can mange it - BUT. How do I get the Hyper-V and other managemnet tools interaface loaded to manage it when I dont have the Hyper-V role installed on the VM, nor would I as it is a VM not a host. Also SP1 for SC sorts the 2012 server 2012 managemnet but SC SP1 is still Beta - shame. Guess it takes a little time to get all the ducks in a row.

I have always understood servercore is 20% better performing than a Windows GUI bloated VM host so I assume the same is true in 2012. Whilst I am a fan of a CLI the GUI is just easy to navigate and spinning a VM with the GUI tools under it is essential as far as I am concerned, now I just need all the Admin tool sloaded in a Management VM under 2012 - any pack with this all in in I can drop in to manage the network from Win2012?.

VHD corruption issues

$

I am getting a very frustrating problem with with corruption on the Vm's virtual disks.  we have had numerous instances where a virtual machine has reported problems and upon restart it won't boot up until you have run windows repair tool at boot up and in some cases it hoses the Vm entirely.  We have 2 Dell R515's connected to a Netgears ReadyNAS 4200 over a 10gb fibre, so bandwitdh can't be an issue.  On the last one the host reported several iscsiprt errors and it appears to be related (ie the errors occurred between the machine being ok and the machine not being ok).  My question is Has anyone else experienced these type of issues with similar equipment?

At the moment we are in the process of installing HDD's in the server to run the VM's on DAS, bue this is by no means an ideal solution as we have invested a lot of money in this.  we would like to get this configuration running but need it to be rock solid.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

NAT ing multiple VM's to seperate physical NICS

$

I have 3 host servers with 4 addictional NICs so that i have can have a 1 to 1 relationship between the vm and the physical NIC.  I have been able to create a seperate external virtual network and map those to the corresponding NIC.  That has been working great, however the company that i work for is implemeting 802.1x, and they are also using it as a billing mechanism.  So my problem with the scenario above is that i get "double" billed by the accounting group because my VM i configure for .1x and I leave the port on the server untouched.  It fails .1x, i could create a MAB object for it.  Again in this scenario i get hit twice for one machine.  I would like to NAT these, but i don't think I can NAT them in a 1 to 1 relationship,  which I want to keep.  does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Can't find virtmgmt.msc after upgrade from 2008R2 Core install to 2012 DataCenter Core

$

Hello,

Today I did an upgrade of our 2008R2 Enterprise Core server running Hyper-V to Server 2012 DataCenter core.  The install seemed to go fine and I was able to log into the machine and view the VMs from my local copy of Hyper-V manager.

I wanted to upgrade the disks from .vhd to .vhdx to take advantage of the new functionality.  Reading some blogs, I did the Minimal Server Install and then tried to run virtmgmt.msc to get access to the local Hyper-V manager.  However, it doesn't appear that virtmgmt.msc is installed on the server (couldn't find the file doing a directory search).

Is there something I am missing?  Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Hyper-V?

Thanks in advance,

Sean
