Domain controller VMs using dynamic VHDx corrupt after power failure

Over the past couple of months I have experienced 4 dead 2008 R2 SP1 domain controllers after power failure on Hyper-V 2012 hosts. The domain controller VMs will start after power failure and have varying degrees of file system corruption. In each instance the corruption has rendered the domain controller unusable. The problem has not occurred with every power failure, but in testing the failure rate has been over 10%.

The Hyper-v 2012 hosts are as follows:

  • Dell PowerEdge r720 with flash backed write cache on Raid controller
  • Dell PowerEdge T710 with battery backed write cache on Raid controller
  • Dell PowerEdge T310 with a single SATA hard drive and write cache disabled
  • Generic system with a single SATA hard drive and write cache disabled

The VM configuration experiencing corruption is as follows:

  • Each VM was created from a base 2008 R2 SP1 syspreped VHDx image template file (40 Gigs)
  • The image template was originally created as a VHD and was then converted to a VHDx
  • The VHDx file has 512k sectors instead of the native 512e of VHDx files (a result of VHD - VHDx conversion)
  • Each VM was assigned 1024 Meg RAM and 1 virtual processor
  • The domain controllers were created by promoting the base 2008 r2 install to a DC after base image deployment
  • Only one corrupt VM was not running the 2012 integration components. The rest were running current 2012 integration components

I have done extensive testing on this issue and the problem for me seems to revolve around the VHDx file format. I have managed numerous Hyper-v installations since the original 2008 server version was released and I have never seen corruption like this until 2012 and VHDx.

For the past few days I have been testing fixed sized VHD VMs on a 2012 host and I have not been able to reproduce the data corruption issue. I seem to only be able to reproduce the problem when using dynamic VHDx files. I have not done any testing on 2012 hosts with fixed size VHDx files or dynamic VHD files.

It would be great to hear from anybody else experiencing similar issues so that we can compare notes and hopefully get to the bottom of this problem.

Create virtual switch failure

Hi all,

I'm trying to create external virtual switch on newly installed HyperV 2012 R2 server.

I'm using the same NIC with host server, and Allow management OS to share this network adapter is checked. When I click Apply i get following error after 5-10 min of delay:

Adding ports to the switch 'LAN' failed.

The operation failed with error code '-4'.

After that server becomes unavailable for network communication.

Any help on this issue will be appreciated.

Set-netadaptervmq / Clear setting

Hi all, I was setting up some network interface cards with vmq settings using set-netadaptervmq and accidentally applied the settings to the 'teamed" nic instead of the physical network interface cards. Now i'm trying to clear the 'MaxProcessors' value from the teamed nic and don't know how. See the screen pic.  Any advice on how to do this?

After WS2012-R2 Update, Hyper-V Network Issues

Hey Everyone, Have a really strange issue after upgrading a HP DL385 G7 from WS2012 to R2. After the upgrade Hyper-V VMs ceased to have network activity. I could not get the network adapters in the VMs to do anything. Host OS NIC was ok after resetting IP Info. 1 Interface for Host, 3 in NIC Team for Hyper-V.

Network Adapters: Two HP NC382i Integrated Dual Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapters

(Main Server: Listed as Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)  ....???

(Backup Server: Listed as HP NC382i DP Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter)

We also have a backup server, the EXACT same, DL385 G7, that is working (and now currently operating as server with VHDs copied from main server since main is down) that has been running WS2012R2 for a couple months now.

Here's basically how the process has gone so far:

1. Upgraded to WS2012R2 (all files were left in tact), Windows Updates, then realized NICs weren't working correctly

 a. Checked NIC Team, V-Switch & NIC Settings in VMs...Removed, Re-Add NICs to VMs (with correct VLAN IDs)

 b. Reset IP Info inside VMs, Uninstalled (including hidden/unused) NICs from Device Manager, Re-Add & Config (This is how I got Host OS to work again)

 c. Updated to latest drivers from HP's site

 d. Uninstall Hyper-V role, Re-Install Hyper-V role, Create new VMs, Configure

2. Fresh Install of WS2012R2, Windows Updates, Configure Server & NICs/Team, Install Hyper-V, Create VMs (same VHDs)

 a. Installed latest HP drivers again, then steps A & B (from above) again

 b. Installed latest "Broadcom" drivers, then steps A & B (from above) again

 c. Tried backing up NIC drivers from backup server and restoring them to main server, but it hasn't worked...

 d. Uninstalled Drivers and right now i'm sitting with Microsoft's default drivers that it has found (Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)

Does anyone have any clues? And possibly a good method to backup the drivers from the server that is working and restoring them to the server that isn't working?

we are in the transition of migrating from windows 2008 on VMWare to 2012 R2 on hyper-v.for the migration of out file server i build a new server on our hyper-v 2012R2 server, with the same disk specification as the Original file server on the VMWare platform.

During the robocopy of data between the old and new server i suddenly lost the connection to the new virtual disk in 2012 R2 . even after a reboot the disk will not mount anymore. Even when i try to mount the .vhdx file on a different server i get a lot off warning and errors, but the file will not mount anymore. How can i get the disk to mount again.

these are the error's

Domain Controller on top of Hyper-V - Firewall problem

$

Hi!

I have:

1. A single physical server which is a Hyper-V host running Windows Server 2012 R2.

2. A single Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Guest VM running on top and acting as a domain controller.

Now I have researched a lot whether I should join the host to the domain running on top of it or leave it in a separate workgroup. There is no best practice but many sources confirm that this is possible and joining the domain offers many management benefits, e.g. here see Option #4:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/11/24/the-domain-controller-dilemma.aspx

Now the problem is that after having joined the host to the domain sometimes everything works fine and the host manages to join the domain on startup but sometimes this seems to fail - I think that the join process times out as the DC in the Guest VM does not start up in time. In this case the firewall tells me that the host is connected to a "public network" instead of the "domain network" and I cannot connect to the server via remote desktop as this is not allowed by default. If I disable and reenable the network adapter the "domain network" is recognized fine but this has to be done manually.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this problem and can recommend some good workaround.

Thanks in advance.

Anguel

Export / Import virtual Machine without deleting the source VM

Hello

I have a little question, in Hyper V Manager i'd like to export my virtual Machine called Test from host01 to another local storage, say Q:.

My goal is to import this VM WITHOUT deleting the VM Test on host01 because i want to be sure that this export works 100%.
Is this possible anyway? What changes do i have to make? Are there other possibilities to check if the export is working? Because starting the VM from Q: is not recommended is it?

Thanks a lot

Modify the headless options of the BIOS on a Hyper-V Virtual Machine

Hi everyone,

I am attempting to do something which is (surprisingly) complex using a Hyper-V virtual machine.  Using VMware Workstation I have been able to boot from the network using VMware autodeploy.  This loads ESXi 5.5 as the operating system.  This works great, but I would like to try to accomplish he same feat using Hyper-V, and I've succeeded.  This creates is a nested ESXi 5.5 host.

The process was long and painful, but I have gotten to the point that I am able to successfully boot a Hyper-V virtual machine off the network (legacy network card as the boot device) then load the OS.  The only problem is that in order to get it to boot I need to hit shift + o during the ESXi boot startup, and enter the following line:

ignoreHeadless=TRUE

The problem is that I can't do this manually every time.  To understand how to fix this, I first needed to understand what exactly "ignoreHeadless=TRUE" was doing.  My understanding is that this has to do with the display, specifically:

"Some systems which have a video display device can be configured to report themselves as headless via the configuration, usually in the system BIOS."

I believe this is my issue, by default a Windows Hyper-V virtual machine reports itself as headless, therefore you need to ignore this configuration on startup or ESXi thinks there is a display error.

My question is, can I fix this from the virtual machine side?  Can I modify the virtual machine so that it does NOT report itself as headless?

Problem with implementing Hyper-V Virtual switch

I have clean Hyper-V host. I need to connect some of my VM's to different VLAN but I can't loose connection to my host.

Host and some VM's need to have 192.168.80.x network.

But some VM's need to receive addresses from 10.10.0.x IP range, and that packets are tagged with VLAN 505.

How to setup virtual switches on Hyper-V host to have this ?

We are testing deployment with SCCM, and we need to do that on VM's.
We don't have SCVMM.

Question about deployment http://bit.ly/1dYXUs1

Cannot add VM to Cluster

We have have Hyper-V 2012 Cluster with 2 Nodes that runs about 10 VMs, mostly Server 2008 R2 with a few 2012. Cluster storage is and iSCSI SAN with DSS7 from Open-e.

I have a VM that I cannot add to the Cluster.  Its Server 2012 that runs Exchange 2013 with about 50 mailboxes.   When I go to the Failover Cluster Manager the VM does not show up.  I have had no problems adding any other VMs.

I am trying to determine why I cannot add this VM to the Cluster.

Thanks,

Todd

Updating Hyper-V host Integration Service

It seems that I'd get rid of this error log if I uninstall and reinstall the Integration Services from the windows 8.1 that I am running on Hyper-V 2008 R2.

I was wondering though, whether there is a procedure to do it other way around; I mean instead of removing the version 3.3 that came bundled with 8.1 image and downgrading to 3.0 ; upgrade the Hyper-V 2008 R2 to accept 3.3 integration service.

Exporting VM to network with Domain User Account

Hi,
I have a problem with my new BackUp-Script.
I run my script as an user with admin rights on the hyper-v machine. I already configured hyper-v security settings (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserversecurity/thread/bc63d585-d514-49ec-9bcb-d8b8ab3a8a85).

If I run my script as local administrator, it works fine! As domain user I always get this error, when Exporting the machine?
You cannot call a method on a null-valued expression.
At C:\scripts\test\CreateVmBackups.ps1:48 char:43
+     $status = $VM_Service.ExportVirtualSystem( <<<< $VM.__PATH, $True, "$dest\$VMName\newest\$date\")

Any ideas?
I would run my script as local admin but in this case, I have no access to my network, where i want to save my exported vm.

Regards, Pascal

How to tell if VM has current Integration Services installed with GUI

How can I tell through the GUI if a VM has the latest version of Integration Services installed? I know there are scripts that can do this, but is there a way to do it through the GUI like there is in vCenter:

2012 R2 - Checkpoint cleanup from failed VM backup

$

We recently had a network traffic / virtual switch issue crop up, due to VMQ being enabled and improperly configured on Broadcom 10GbE adapters.  While that failure occurred, our backup appliances were taking backups of VMs.  Because of lost network connectivity, the Hyper-V checkpoints used for those backups remain on some of our VMs.

These checkpoints do not have the usual "Delete Checkpoint" / "Delete Checkpoint Subtree" options available to them.  How do I remove them so the virtual disks are merged and back to a single VHDX per virtual disk?

Noticed that our hyper-V host logs the below event log error every time it is rebooted.  Any ideas why this service did not shut down properly?

EventId: 7043, System, Service Control Manager - The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control.

The hosted virtual server does pause/restart and shutdown/startup correctly from hyper-v manager manually.

Anyone else seeing this error message?

AD Controller for Cluster

$

This may be extremely basic HyperV cluster 101, but I need a quick double check on my understanding here...

We've got three identical hosts connected to a SAN, the plan being to create a cluster and doll out no more VMs than can comfortably fit on two hosts so that in case of all out failure of one of them, the VMs in question fail over to the third.

Then we realized that a cluster needs an AD Controller.  Now we could add a simple physical server, but that would create a serious single point of failure would it not?  IE, if it goes down the whole cluster is shot.  I suppose we could add TWO small physical servers, one primary controller and one secondary, but that would add considerable expense considering the austere nature of this layout.

Only alternative I see is to create the AD Controller as a VM on one of the hosts and a secondary controller as a VM on another, such that in an all out host failure, there is still a domain controller for the cluster to function.

Do I have that right?

How do I turn off Hyper-V 2012 server sleep mode?

$

Just installed Hyper-V 2012 server on a HP ML360 G8. Also installed Corefig 1.1.1. It seems after about 10 minutes if idle time the monitor goes black and the unit goes into sleep or hibernation.  I have used powercfg to set it to the High Performance power scheme and set screensaver to none in Corefig.

When the monitor goes black, if I move the mouse the sconfig screen, corefig, etc windows do not show until I run the mouse over them. Even then the windows do not 'repaint' until I run the mouse over the whole window or make some kind of key stroke in each window.

Worried what this will do to my VMs once I start building them and would like to see the screen at all times.  This is the first 2012 box and I have never had this issue with any of the Core 2008 products.

Thanks

Hello,

i am having a working environment for storage-migration Hyperv-2012R2-machines to a windows SMB-server.

Now i am also try to do a storage-migration to QNAP-NAS.

This NAS is joined to the windows-domain. I have created a Domain-Security-Group with my 2 HYPER-v-hosts in it. This Group is has Full Control to the Hyper-v folder where the storage-migration goes to.

I receive the following error when doing a storge migration to the QNAP:

What is the difference here with SMB-file share on the windows-machine and is there an option to fix this issue?

Thx

Hyper-V VM Generation 2 - How to boot from .ISO

$

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Kenny
