Snapshots in HyperV

Hi,

I'm new to Virtual machines.

Once the snapshots have been deleted and merged in HyperV they free up  free up disk space and all other snapshots are now in a single compact VHD, and the performance increases.  Does that mean this single snapshot will build up again in the future and cause the system to slow down?

Thank you,

Hello

Initially would like an opinion of you , which recently took over the management of a network of medium-sized company , where they had bought a server to virtualize other two servers with SQL Server .

The server was purchased a :

Dell PowerEdge R720 with 2 x Intel Xeon E5 -2620 6 -core , 2.00 GHz (2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost) , 15 MB cache , 8 x 8GB RDIMM , 1600 MT / s , 16 6 Gbps SAS hard drives of 300 GB , 10k RPM , Hot Plug 2.5 " ; units PERC controller card H710P

Ie , I have 16 discs and 64 GB of RAM .

I have to install Windows Server 2012 and later install HyperV , SQL Server 2012 and set up 2 servers on HyperV , each SQL Server database now has 150 GB , or 300 GB total .

What I would like to opinion would be the most effective way to create RAIDS disk , separating correctly for the HOST to SQL Server , with better performance .

I am thinking them do the following:

CREATE A RAID 1 pair HOST .

Another paragraph CREATE RAID 1 Install Hyper - V

CREATE A RAID 60 paragraph SQL database

CREATE A Raid 10 paragraph tempdb

THAT would be good , BUT for Open Opinions .

thank you

Server 2012 R2: How do I set VLAN data for the Host Virtual Switch (via PowerShell)?

$

I need to modify the Host (NOT the VM's) VMSwitch VLAN settings via Powershell for automation purposes.

In Server 2012 (NOT R2), this can be done via modifying MSVM_VLANEndPointSettingData

However, it seems in Server 2012 R2, that class is gone. I've manually searched through the MSVM classes, and it seems that the Host VMSWitch VLAN settings are stored in MSVM_EthernetSwitchPortVlanSettingData. Unfortunately, I have no way of tying that class to a specific VMSwitch.

Any know how to do this on Server 2012 R2?

Question about Hyper-V 2012 clustering

Hi,

On school we are making an environment that has the following:

-2 Hyper-V servers running server 2012 datacenter (one server is running virtual in vmware)

-1 AD server (2012 server)

-Openfiler for storage of hosts

We get the following error everytime we want to run the tests on our cluster:

VPD error: failed to get scsi 83h VPD descriptors

We have configured ISCSI with openfiler, the servers are both connected with the target aswell, we can see the disks in disk management. But it seems something is wrong with ISCSI and we have no idea what we are doing wrong.

I saw that for 2008 server there was a hotfix, but there doesn't seem to be one for 2012 server...

I hope someone knows the solution to this problem.

Regards,

Jorik

Missing guest in Failover Cluster

I have a 3 node Server 2012R2 Hyper-V failover cluster with 18 guests. Today, I migrated a guest from VMWare using my normal method to one of the nodes in the cluster. Upon completion I added a role to the cluster, the guest appeared in the list of available Virtual Machines and completed successfully. However, I cannot locate the guest on the list of roles within the cluster.

If I connect to the individual node that I know the guest is on, using Hyper-V Manager, I can see the guest, but Failover Cluster Manager refuses to see it.

I have tried this on several workstations, no success.

Any ideas?  I have used this same technique for all of the hosted guests without issue until now.

Thanks

Mike

HyperV replica Capacity Planner

Hi,

I'm trying to run the HyperV replica Capacity planner against the HyperV Cluster on the production environment. The cluster consists of 5 Windows 2012 Datacenter hyperV hosts. I downloaded the capacity planner from the following URL.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=39057

Execute it on the SCVMM server (SCVMM 2012 R2 on Windows 2012 R2). Took the default value for Duration for Metric (30 Minutes) and specified the HyperV replica Broker name for the Primary site details. Skipped the replica site details. However, it doesn't go beyond the following screen. Kept it running for 8 hours with n luck

Screenshot 1

If I click next i get the following screen,

How can I troubleshoot this issue?

How to resolve Event 14260, Hyper-V-VMMS

Anyone have any idea what causes this message and how I can go about resolving it? I have two hyper-v servers one gets literally thousands of these warnings every day from pretty much all users while the other gets absolutely none so I assume it is a configuration issue but I have no idea what configuration it could be.

Hello, I have a Windows server 2008 on which I have setup a linux machine as a Hyper-v guest to use as a PBX machine. I need to install a WAN PIPE USB FXO card which is attached as a USB device. I've read some of the posts about pass through disks, but the device is not getting listed in the disk management because its not basically a disk, its more like a driver. Please help asap.

Thank you

Slow network CentOS vs Windows 7 on Hyper-V

$

Hallo, I administrate Windows 2008 Server 64bit sp1 with Hyper-V. Ihe machines configuration is Xeon E3-1230@3,3Ghz, 16GB RAM, SataRAID and Intel 82574L NIC (configured as Virtual switch).

Basicaly, I run two virtual machines there. One of them is CentOS 6.5 i386 minimal and the second one is Windows7 profesional. Both virtual machines use the same Hyper-V synthetic network adapter. When I compare network performance I can see that CentOS is slower, like really slower. CentOSs network transfer speed is about 30MBps in average while Windows7 reaches 100MBps. Doesnt matter service I use. Speed is more or less low.

The test was performed ftom both machines as:
1. I open a virtual pc machine and log in
2. Then mounted a shared network drive from the host server
3. Then I download a file from that mounted drive to vitual machine machine using MC (TC on Windows)
Than I tested the other eay and tryed to download a file from shared folder to host server with similar resultes.

CentOS is supposed to have LIS integrated out of the box and it is so. Updating to LIS3.5 does not make any diference for me. Also I experience the same problem on multiple host servers and multiple cent os installatios. Doesnt matter I use x64 vs i386 CentOS version.

Here is configuration of my CentOS virtual machine:

I would really appriciate any suggestion anybody could give me. And want to stress that I am using synthetic NIC and simple updating LIS is not woring for me. Thank you really like much.

Server02 - Windows 2008 R2, 2 x Quad Core Processors, 144GB RAM HP ProLiant

SAN01 - 8TB HP StorageWorks

SAN02 - 8TB HP StorageWorks

I have Server01 & SAN01 connected via ISCSI and 10 Virtual Machines running via Hyper-V

I have Server02 & SAN02 connected via ISCSI and 8 Virtual Machines running via Hyper-V

If I do any type of exports or disc expansions related to a Hyper-V machine the system in question becomes so slow that it almost comes to a stand still.

What could be causing the issue ?

Windows 2012 Hyper-V Virtual SAN Switch Best Practice

$

I have a four node cluster running W2012 Datacenter edition on each.  All systems have Emulex HBA compatible with Hyper-V and Virtual SAN technology. The hosts are connected to a Brocade SAN Switch with NPIV Enabled. I've created a Virtual SAN on each host. The vSAN is connected to 2 physical HBA. Each HBA is connected to a different physical SAN Switch.

I have some questions about the best practice of the whole system.

1. Do I have to create a vSAN per physical HBA ? Or create one vSAN that include 2 HBA ?

2. Add 2 virtual HBA per VM to have fault tolerance ? Or one virtual HBA that is connected to a vSAN with 2 HBAs ?

3.  Do I have to create a virtual port for each VM on the HBA Gui (OCManager) ?

Any best pratice or advice ?

Thanks

Hyper-V Shared Disks Windows 2012 r2

Hi,

I have windows 2012 r2 intalled in my laptop (has Hyper-V role installed) and I want to setup a couple of VMs for lab purposes. The VMs will have AD and some of them I want to configured them as clusters for demonstration. I try to use the "Enable virtual hard disk sharing" but I get an error saying that the storage is not supported.

Does anyone has a link or tutorial how to configure this?

PS: I have a clean SSD drive dedicated for the VMs in the laptop.

Thank you.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

I'm trying to enable Hyper-V Replication from a 2012 Hyper-V core to a 2012 R2 Hyper-V core. This is going across different domains through a WAN connection. I created and successfully enabled certificates on both servers.

Disabled windows firewall on both servers with "Set-NetFirewallProfile -Profile Domain,Private,Public -Enabled False". Replica server is configured with a static public IP. I can establish a connection on 443 from primary server to replica server and view the connection with netstat.

However, I get the "Could not get configuration details of the specified server" from the replication wizard. If I continue through the wizard I eventually end up withEnabling replication failed. Connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE). It fails to establish a connect with the replication server.

The odd thing is that if I run netstat on the primary server during the replication wizard I see no traffic leaving the primary server. Nor do I see traffic leaving the Hyper-V manager computer, which happens to be a vm on the primary server. I do however see traffic between manager computer and primary server during the replication wizard process.

It looks like the primary server never attempts to reach the replication server.

I checked the security logs of primary server and see 4634 Logoff,5058 Other System Events, and 5061 System Integrity entries. There are also 4776, 4624, and 4672 entries. Administrative Events display29310 and 32000 errors from Hyper-V-VMMS.

I'm stuck. I'm tempted to take the replica server and connect it to the same LAN as the primary server and live migrate (shared nothing) the VMs so that I can have both hosts on 2012 R2. But this may not be a solution.

Can anyone clue me in to what I'm missing??

VSS Error in writer Hyper-V

I have a cluster with CSV 5 and DPM can't perform backup on only a few machines in the cluster, it apesenta VSS the following error:

Well, how did not get any results in searches, then checked the versions of the IC on client machines as clusters migrated from 2008 to 2012 some were outdated, updated them, even just to leave everything compliance.

So I decided to clear the "Backup (volume snapshot)" and now he backs up but does the same linux machines, saving the machine and causing downtime of it, and even if you are a linux machine with this option it can not perform the backup this because it tries utilizr VSS method (I think).

Please, anyone help-me?

thanks!

Virtual machine "crashing DNS Pool"

My home network crashes every time I try to start up a virtual machine in Hyper-V and also when I'm doing configuration of the network adaptors. Since my Television is IP based it also crashes at the same time. The tech support for my internet suggested that the Virtual machine in HyperV was "crashing the DNS pool"  but I have no clue what that means.  Does anyone know of what might cause this or possibly how to fix it?

Hyper-V Slow Loading WIM File and BSOD Network Boot

I am having some problems performing a Network Installation. I don't have this issue with VM Workstation or with any physical desktops when I network book and connect to my WDS.  I have a two physical socket 8 core processor with a secondary NIC.  I created a virtual switch pointing to one of my NICs and when I start the PXE Boot it would load the WIM file at a slow rate and when it starts to boot up I get BSOD with a error of BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO.  I have been struggling on this for a few weeks and running out of ideas.  Thanks.

can't add VM to Failover cluster after clonning with SYSPREP

Hi,

I installed 3 VM from W2012 Server eval. ISO

1.DC

2.W2012Node1

3.W2012Node2

created domain,  added machine to domain, added failover cluster future and created cluster with W2012Node1 and W2012Node2

to facillated future VM creattion I build VM "templlate" = VM_template

on VM_tempalte I installed W2012 Server eval. then in "add futures" added failover cluser, and net 3.5 support(needed for installation of SQL2012)

then used SYSPREP to created  clear clone of VM and saved.

created  2 copy of  VM_template file and created 2 more VM, W2012Node3 and W2012Node4 and added then to domain.

on W2012Node3  I choose ..create new cluster browse ...

In available machines  can see only

DC,

W2012Node1

W2012Node2

W2012Node3

W2012Node4 is not availabe!

I tried to create new cluster from W2012Node4 and got same result ,W2012Node4 is not visible

in DC -->active directories I can see all the computers  including W2012Node4

Why W2012Node4 is not visibible from for cluster?

Can I modify some setting on W2012Node4 to make it visible for cluster ?

HyperV 2008 R2 - VM to VM data transfer slow speeds

$
0
0

HyperV 2008 R2 Cluster with 2 nodes.

Host to Host traffic is as expected at 75-100MB/s. Inter VM traffic even when on the same host was at 5-6MB/s.

I installed latest firmware/drivers for all host nics. Disabled TCP Connection Offload, large send offload, RSS and Chimney globally using netsh,  and  Virtual Machine Queues. The speed improved to 20MB/s but this is still drastically slow.

We are also experiencing this on other 08 R2 cluster's.

Has anyone experienced this and found a solid solution? I have followed a lot of the other threads but no one seems to have a definitive answer/solution for this?
