How to resolve Event 14260, Hyper-V-VMMS

0
0

Anyone have any idea what causes this message and how I can go about resolving it? I have two hyper-v servers one gets literally thousands of these warnings every day from pretty much all users while the other gets absolutely none so I assume it is a configuration issue but I have no idea what configuration it could be.

VHD Size is Maximum Size Allowed Without Using All Space in OS

0
0

Hello - I have a Hyper-V VM whose maximum size allowed is 700GB. Currently, the VHD file size is 700GB yet the OS is only using ~400GB (300GB free). Shouldn't the VHD size be about 400GB instead of 700? Every other VM I have checked matches the size being used in the OS.

As I was typing this I think I answered my own question. This VM has a fixed size and all of the other VMs we have are dynamic. I assume this is why? It is a SQL server so I guess it is fixed for better performance. I didn't set this up

Can I safely shrink the VHD down a little bit? When trying to get replicas of this VM, it keeps crashing the VM due to space limitations. It is on its own Cluster Disk but it only has a few GB free which is why I believe it is failing. How much free disk space is needed where the VHD is located in order for replication to work?

This is our SQL server so I am a little cautious in what we do with it.

Thanks for your help,

Mike

Hyper-V Slow Loading WIM File and BSOD Network Boot

I am having some problems performing a Network Installation. I don't have this issue with VM Workstation or with any physical desktops when I network book and connect to my WDS.  I have a two physical socket 8 core processor with a secondary NIC.  I created a virtual switch pointing to one of my NICs and when I start the PXE Boot it would load the WIM file at a slow rate and when it starts to boot up I get BSOD with a error of BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO.  I have been struggling on this for a few weeks and running out of ideas.  Thanks.

Server 2012 R2: How do I set VLAN data for the Host Virtual Switch (via PowerShell)?

0
0

I need to modify the Host (NOT the VM's) VMSwitch VLAN settings via Powershell for automation purposes.

In Server 2012 (NOT R2), this can be done via modifying MSVM_VLANEndPointSettingData

However, it seems in Server 2012 R2, that class is gone. I've manually searched through the MSVM classes, and it seems that the Host VMSWitch VLAN settings are stored in MSVM_EthernetSwitchPortVlanSettingData. Unfortunately, I have no way of tying that class to a specific VMSwitch.

Any know how to do this on Server 2012 R2?

VSS Error in writer Hyper-V

I have a cluster with CSV 5 and DPM can't perform backup on only a few machines in the cluster, it apesenta VSS the following error:

Well, how did not get any results in searches, then checked the versions of the IC on client machines as clusters migrated from 2008 to 2012 some were outdated, updated them, even just to leave everything compliance.

So I decided to clear the "Backup (volume snapshot)" and now he backs up but does the same linux machines, saving the machine and causing downtime of it, and even if you are a linux machine with this option it can not perform the backup this because it tries utilizr VSS method (I think).

Please, anyone help-me?

thanks!

Windows 8.1 Hyper V Virtual Switch Manager - Cannot add New Virtual Switch

I'm trying in vain to add A New Virtual Switch on my Hyper V host machine, but I keep getting the same crash-report regardless of what I'm trying to do.

I have already done a Remove/Add of HyperV and a Windows Update Search but still the same error. Can it be related to a VPN installation on the hos pc ?

I'm not a master of hardware and networks, just trying to setup a Hyper V virtual machine,

Issue configuring vlan-id on virtual machines

0
0

Hi all,

I seem to be having an unusual problem getting a switch trunk port to recognize the Hyper-V vlan-id tags.

Here is the problem:

Environment:

  • Virtual Machine: Windows Server 2012r2 eval (vhd) configured as a domain controller
  • Physical Switch: Cisco Catalyst 3550
  • Host/Physical Server: Windows Server 2012 (not R2) Standard
(no big name parts: motherboard and nic's put together from various sources)

I am following the instructions listed in the Hyper-V: Configure VLANs and VLAN Tagging forum article that I see many linking to...BTW, I am not using NIC teaming.

This all seems simple enough--and it seems that many others are getting this to work...but not for me  :-(

Here is the problem:

This works:

  • Configure the physical switch port as an access port for the specific VLAN (129)
  • Configure an 'external' virtual switch (no vlan-id) and attach to the above access port
  • Do not configure a vlan-id for the VM

This does not work:

  • Configure the physical switch port as a trunk port (with all VLANs allowed)
  • Configure an 'external' virtual switch (no vlan-id) and attach to the above trunk port
  • Configure vlan-id 129 on the VM

When I do this configuration I am no longer able to access the 129 VLAN.  On the physical switch, I can see that the packets are delivered, however they are untagged (they show as belonging to the native vlan-id 1).  However, I do see that the physical switch recognizes the virtual switch as a peer and trunking is enabled between them.   If I run 'Get-VMNetworkAdapterVlan' in powershell on the host machine, I see that the network adapter for the VM is in Access mode and the Vlanlist (vlan-id?) is 129.

So, it looks like Hyper-V thinks it is tagging the traffic, but the Cisco switch does not see the tags.  This would seem to point to the physical NIC I am using on the host server.  However, I can find no other example in the forums of a NIC not supporting Trunk mode.  Also, the switch recognizes the virtual switch and sets up a trunk session with it.

I feel like I am missing something very obvious here.  Can anyone offer any suggestions?  My goal is to be able to setup multiple VLANs to isolate/route traffic between VMs and the rest of the external network.  This is a test/learning environment so experimentation is welcome ;-)

Thanks,

Alex.

Hello

Initially would like an opinion of you , which recently took over the management of a network of medium-sized company , where they had bought a server to virtualize other two servers with SQL Server .

The server was purchased a :

Dell PowerEdge R720 with 2 x Intel Xeon E5 -2620 6 -core , 2.00 GHz (2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost) , 15 MB cache , 8 x 8GB RDIMM , 1600 MT / s , 16 6 Gbps SAS hard drives of 300 GB , 10k RPM , Hot Plug 2.5 " ; units PERC controller card H710P

Ie , I have 16 discs and 64 GB of RAM .

I have to install Windows Server 2012 and later install HyperV , SQL Server 2012 and set up 2 servers on HyperV , each SQL Server database now has 150 GB , or 300 GB total .

What I would like to opinion would be the most effective way to create RAIDS disk , separating correctly for the HOST to SQL Server , with better performance .

I am thinking them do the following:

CREATE A RAID 1 pair HOST .

Another paragraph CREATE RAID 1 Install Hyper - V

CREATE A RAID 60 paragraph SQL database

CREATE A Raid 10 paragraph tempdb

THAT would be good , BUT for Open Opinions .

thank you

Hyper-V host server upgrade from Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre

We are about to upgrade our Hyper-V host servers from Server 2008R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre to take advantage of the latest Hyper-V features.

This only concerns the host servers and not the guest VMs running on the hosts (they will be upgraded next year).

This is what is running on our host servers:

    • Host 1
      • File,print & issuing CA server
      • Exchange 2010
      • SharePoint 2010
      • Quickbooks server
      • Domain controller 1
      • Offline CRL CA

    • Host 2
      • SQL 2008
      • Forefront TMG 2010
      • Domain Controller 2
      • Windows 7 client

With this is mind, I have drafted a rough action plan as follows:

    • Create a list of all file locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
    • Document all existing system settings
    • Gather server information, download drivers, RAID controller and other boot drivers & firmware updates (in case the in-place upgrade fails)
    • Test all software media
    • Copy all VMs onto external data storage (NAS drive)
      • As part of the upgrade process we will redistribute some hard drive space i.e.
      • expand them to their new sizes and verify the data integrity of copied VMs by powering up each VM in a test environment
      • Wipe and adjust the sizes of the host partitions to accommodate the expanded VMs
      • Perform an in-place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
  • Check EV, services etc
  • Change the default locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
  • Upgrade Anti-virus and other system software
  • Test the system

Are there any glaring omissions? Does anyone have any tips they can give me?

Hi,

My question is if I can create a Scale Out File Server Cluster with CSV using the disks that comes with the servers, we have 2 servers with 2 arrays each one, 1 array for the OS files and 1 array that we could use for the CSV.

Regards.

hyper v in network

Hi can someone help please.

here is my configuration

host1 X.X.10.1

host2 X.X.10.2

host1 and host 2 has 2 VM  each

on host 1 hyper-v i can see the ip of host1 10.1 that is using nic #1

on host2 hyper-v  i can see the ip of host2 10.2 that is using nic #2

i installed server 2012 on VM on host 1 that i gave a static ip and i assigned it to a virtual switch using nic#2 on host1

on hyper v i can see the virtual ethernet nic#2 but with a randon ip adress so i did change that ip the same as my server 2012 static ip adress.

I install a server 2012 Dc on host2 VM assigned it a virtual switch too and allocated a nic card 2

on hyper v i can see the virtual ethernet nic#2 but with a randon ip so i changed it too and i add the DNS ip of my DC.

what i did is i changed all DNS ip on all NIC on hyper v host 1 and 2.

now i want my server 2012 to join the domain but it has a static ip. how can i make it join the domain?

my DC ip is X.X.2.40

DNS X.X.X.40

thanks for your help

Copy/Paste to a VM machine causes the file size of the VM to increase drastically

0

Hi,

I set up a Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 VM on my PC and I connect to it through Remote Desktop. Whenever I try to copy/paste a folder into the VM through RDP, the size of my VM on my PC increases drastically. I tried moving a 20 MB folder this way and the size of the VM on my C:\ drive increased by 10 GB!!!

Does anyone know why this causes my disk space to increase so drastically?

Is there a way to revert the disk space to the previous size? I tried the Compact feature and that did not seem to make any difference.

When I look at the hard drive of my VM, it says it is only using about 40 GB but it takes up about 58 GB on my hard drive. If anyone has any ideas on how to shrink this space I would be interested. I also tried

Resize-VHD –Path c:\BaseVHDX.vhdx –ToMinimumSize

but I got an error saying it was not allowed.

Thanks!

Hyper-V Guest Performance \ BIOS

I was setting up a Hyper-V (2008R2) Guest for Sql Server and wondered about the following:

1) Does the Guest Power plan setting impact Guest performance? (The default seems to be "Balanced" but should it be "High Performance" for Sql?)

2)  Do Guests have "BIOS"es  that require "firmware" updating and options that can be adjusted? (I always thought that installing the Guest "Integration Additions" was about as far as one could go with the Guest BIOS)

orphaned VHDs

0
0

Folks,

Is there a quick way to see all unattached (orphaned) .vhd drives?

The reason I am asking is that we have a relatively large Hyper-V host that runs tons of VMs, the problem is that "there are too many cooks in the kitchen", namely a lot of people have access to the server.
They create and delete a lot of VMs. When they delete a VM from the console, as we all know, does not delete actual VHDs from the file system. Hence, the host is now running out of space.....

Again, we were wondering if there is a script/interface that can show which VHD is attached to which VM?

Thanks!

Dmitri.

Can't import a VM

0
0

Hello!

There's a test PC (Server 2012R2)  with two network cards (Nic1=Realtek, Nic2 = Dlink). Some days ago I created a VM on this PC and created a couple of checkpoints for the VM. Today I formatted the PC's disk C, tried importing this VM and failed:

If i choose the Realtek virtual adapter from the list the error persists:

So I don't understand

1) Why Hyper-V "can't find" the switch that's available for selection

2) Is a vm (or a snapshot of the vm) bound to a specific virtual adapter and can't be used with any other one? (If so I would be suprised...I re-attached replica VMs to other virtual switches many times without any problems...

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Server 2012 R2, RemoteFX issue

Hi,

tried to enable RemoteFX on Server 2012 R2 with no success. I have CPU that is capable of SLAT, but I'm not sure about GPU. I have AMD HD 7770 GPU that is DX11 capable and I installed WDDM 1.3 driver (both needed for RemoteFX). RD Virtualization Host is installed, but unfortunatelly, when I open Hyper-V manager and check Physical GPU option i get "None of the GPUs on this computer supports RemoteFX". This GPU satisifies all the prerequisites for RemoteFX (DX, WDDM), I installed RD Virtualization Host, but I can't get it to work. Anyone had similar problem??

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

Sorry for my english, I'm french and I hope my message will be easy to understand.

I have a probleme with hvremote and hyperV server : I want to add remote management access to users but I won't give them admin access. I've try the command hvremote /add:domain\user /explicit, the command is a success but I can't manage my server with my user... if I use the command hvremote /add:domain\user, it work (but with admin rights)
In fact : I want to have one or two admin, and other users in groups with differents authorisations : a groupe which can creat VM, launch VM..., a group wich can't creat VM but can launch thems...

Do you know how can I do to do that ?

Thank you very much and sorry again for my english lvl.
