Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V managment service shutsdown when connection to RDS connection broker

Hi

I have three Hyper-V 2012 servers all running the RDS virtualisation host service in order to host a Windows 8 VDI infrastructure.  I have started to received an issue that occurs every night at 00:45 hrs.  The VMMS service stops on all three of the hosts at this time and there for stops serving the desktop images.

If I remove the RDS virtualisation host role from one of the Hyper-V servers but leave the desktop VM's running the service is stable and does not shut down nightly.

I have been through the VMMS log files and see nothing un ordinary.  There is an event stating that the service has received a stop command and then that's it.

I am running Windows Server 2012 RTM with GUI on all three of the host servers as well as the separate server hosting the RDS connection broker role.  All installs were clean installs i.e not upgrades from 2008 R2

Has any one come across this issue?

Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

Hi all,

We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not been able to find anything.

According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.

regards,

Trond

Losing pings only within a Hyper-V cluster.

Good day.

We are experiencing an issue on our VMM based private cloud where pings are failing only for VMs running within the private cloud. We can ping servers on the rest of our network with no apparent issues. We can even ping the cluster nodes that host the private cloud VMs without issues. When we try to ping the VMs though we note between 1%-3% in missed pings.

We've tried a couple of tests to try and isolate this to see if it could be related to our older, non-IPv6 aware, hardware switches but have not seen any significant change in the behavior. One test we attempted was to take the NIC connections for one of the nodes that are connected to the vSwitch that the VMs are running on and place those two connections on a different physical switch to see if this was some kind of address space issue from the switch perspective. This test resulted in no change to the behavior and the ping loss of 1-3% continued.

At this point we suspect that this is a configuration issue on our part, but we're not having much luck figuring out how to best troubleshoot this issue. Are there any statistics we should be looking at from the VM, vSwitch, or Hyper-V level that might help us better identify the root cause of this issue?

We are running an 8 node Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster with several post SP1 patches loaded on it. We are also running SCVMM 2012 Update 2. The VM networks are running off of a pair of teamed Broadcom NICs on each host with a separate set of teamed NICs for all of our iSCSI and Cluster network.

Any input or thoughts would be appreciated.

HyperV VMM Storage for Server 2012

I was reading the Server 2012 Microsoft Press RTM book and it mentioned Scale out File Server as a role in the cluster. Is this preferable to using the CSV after creating the HyperV cluster? If so would the file servers need to have HyperV roles and live in the same cluster to be accessed by VMM and HyperV?

How to avoid Exchange server logs truncation when Hyper-v guest OS gets backed up?

Hi,

Is there any way to restrict Hyper-v VSS writer to truncate the Exchange server logs?. I have a VM with Backup Integration services Installed. When i Issue snapshot of VM, logs gets truncated and a full backup entry is created in the Exchange server. This is happening even i call VSS COPY only snapshot.

Can anyone please tell me solution for this ?

Thanks in advance,

Microsoft Virtual Machine Conventer - VM is running with a disk configuration that is not supported

I´m running a single instance of Microsoft Virtual Machine Conventer on a client computer, to convert a VM from VMware ESXi 5.1 to a stand-alone Hyper-V 2012.

At the end of a wizard, I get this failure: "Microsoft Virtual Machine Conventer The VMware specified VM with host name is running with a disk configuration that is not supported."

The disk of source VM is scsi 0:0.

I didn´t find any other source of this issue, only this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg610672.aspx

Hyper-V Server 2012 - Live migration + storage migration + clustering in a workgroup

Hi,

I took the Microsoft virtual academy (MVA) for "Windows Server 2012: Server Virtualization"
And if you look on the last pdf under virtual machine scale and mobility called "Mobility and Technology Protection Review" page 6, you'll see that the diagram says that live migration + storage migration + clustering supports workgroups.

But live migration or clustering by itself is marked as not supported in a workgroup.

So is there some way of having workgroup support in hyper-v 2012 if you use all 3 technologies?

This would be awesome for me, and I'm really interested to get some more information on this if anyone can shed some light :)
I really hope this is not a typo.

Thanks,
Pål

upgrading hyper-v 2008 r2 to 2012?

is it possible/will it be possible to just upgrade hyper-v server from 2008 r2 to 2012 or will I have to reinstall the whole os and vms?

Hyper-V Server 2012 VM on a display?

If I have a Hyper-V Server 2012 installation on a server and I have 2 VMs on the server, do I have to remote into the servers or is there a way to display the VMs on the server machine's attached monitor and use the attached keyboard and mouse. I didn't know if the server machine itself was usable through one of the VMs or if it had to sit in a closet and only be used through remote services.

Very slow copy from external NAS device to VM on hyper-v role. Also no connectivity to Host from VM.

Hello,

I have a Dell T420 running 2008R2 server with the hyper-v role and 1 windows SBS2003 server VM running. The server has 2 NIC's one I assigned on hyper-v role (external).  The VM shows the 1 NIC and share management network is checked.  I cannot ping the VM from the HOST and I cannot ping the HOST from the VM. I can ping outside the VM on the external network from the VM.  I can see the NAS device (buffalo terastation) and copy files from it, however, the copy starts fine then less than a minute later the time to copy goes from 7 minutes to 137 minutes and copying comes to a crawl , then a bit later the time decreases down to low numbers again and the progress bar moves at a good pace for a bit then it starts to slow again. I am copying a 13GB SQL backup file and it took over 35 minutes.

I am new to hyper-v but not to vmware.  I am unclear on how to best setup VM networking on a server with 2 NIC's and could really use some help in fixing these issues.

Thank you!

Dan Andrews

HyperV VMs go missing

We have a HyperV 2008 cluster and every so often the VMs will go missing from the network. You go to the console and it says you can not use your mouse, and the screen is small, you can not resize it and it has no bars to move up and down, so all you can see is the top left hand side of the screen.

We can recue it by migrating it from one machine to the other and its then fine but we would like to stop it happening in the first place. Any one seen this before?

Run Chkdsk on VM (Blue Screening)

Hi Everyone,

I have a VM running on Hyper V Serer 2008 Enterprise SP2. The guest OS is also running Server 2008 SP2

My VM is blue screening on startup. Same happens if I try and boot into safe mode. One of the messages displayed on the blue screen is  suggestion to run Chkdsk /F.

My question is how can I run Chkdsk on a VM.

BTW Booting into safe mode with  command prompt also blue screen.

Advice welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-v 2012 live migration issue (invalid signature)

Hi,

Has anyone experimented with Hyper-V in server 2012? I have two servers: one domain controller and one domain member on which I have enabled Live Migration with Kerberos and changed the delegation constraints (for the domain member). Also added "domain admins" group in the Hyper-V administrators group on the domain member.

I am trying to move a machine between the two servers and it fails with always the same failure (I tried all kinds of VMs):

"Virtual machine migration failed at migration source"
"Failed to create folder"

And then some cryptic error about the virtual hard disk: some "invalid signature" error about the hard disk. Seems like it can't create the disk on the other server for some unknown reason (the invalid signature). And by the way, I am not using the default folders. All my VMs are stored on a separate hard drive on both my servers, each in its own folder under a master folder.

Has anyone experimented with Hyper-V 2012?

Thanks.

Hyper-V backup of guests - truncating the log

Hello

I've found a few documents about the backing up of Hyper-V guests but can anyone confirm:

Windows server 2008 running 2 VMs:

Exchange 2010
SQL 2008

What is the best practice for backup?

Run internal backups on the guest VMs, then backup the VMs from the host (windows backup/diskshadow)

I'd rather not install an agent on the guest.

Thanks

John

Is there a MS equivalent of VMWare View?

Hi,

I want to virtualize desktops in my company -- small business. If possible, I'd like to use MS solutions from the server to the client. Is there a MS equivalent of VMWare View?

I like VMWare View's ability to allow user to continue working even if network connection is not available e.g. during a business trip, an employee can continue working during a flight from NY to LA.

Thanks, Sam

We just rebuilt our machine with server 2012, and it was working flawlessly and then randomly it started giving me this error if i would try to start up a machine. At first this was just an annoyance but now it is worrying me greatly. I have tried everything from logging on as the domain admin account to the actual server administrator account. Nothing seems to start these machines up, and I need them to start.

Rebuilding Hyper V after crash

I am currently having an issue with our Domain Controller network environment which is on Hyper V. Basically the machine that was hosting the Hyper V has crashed. The problem is not with hard drive but with the corrupted hyper v file.

We have all the vhds and xml configuration files in separate partition. Plan is to make a fresh install of hyper v and reattach all virtual machine. My question is how to do this so that we can retain same DC network?

Please let me know if you need further clarification.

Thanks,

Hyper-V virtual machines remote web access

0

What are the possible ways to give remote access to end users to virtual machines running on Hyper-V?

If running Windows, it is possible to use RDP client. But what if the thin client is running non-Windows OS, can users connect to Hyper-V virtual machines using web browser?

I have read about personal virtual desktops/pools as a part of Remote Desktop services on Windows 2008 R2, but I understand it requires Windows Server 2008 domain functional level and a schema upgrade to Windows 2008 atleast. Is that right?

Is there any other way to grant remote access to hyper-v virtual machines using web interface on non-Windows machines?
