Windows 7 SYSVOL Problem (Hyper-V VM)

0
0

NOTE: I was told in the Windows 7 forum to post this in the Server forum instead.

I'm having a strange issue on one of several Windows 7 (Ultimate x86) machines.    This particular machine is a VM running in Hyper-V on a Windows 2008 R2 server (also a DC/AD/DNS/DHCP/WDS server).     This is all within a Windows 2008 R2 active directory domain.

NOTE: I've changed my active directory domain name to the generic names "DOMAIN" and the domain controller machine name to "DOMAINCONTROLLER" in this post to keep my network details from being public knowledge.  The actual domain and machine names have not been renamed on the network.

I'm noticing two symptoms that appear to be related:

  1. In the Event Log, I see (every hour) a System\GroupPolicy event ID 1058.   The error code is 0x80090022 (2148073506) and is very cryptic "Provider could not perform the action since the context was acquired as silent.".    It mentions that it could not access \\DOMAIN\sysvol\DOMAIN\Policies\{GUID}\gpt.ini
  2. This Windows 7 machine cannot access the DFS shares either which are \\DOMAIN\dfs.   I get the message "An extended error has occurred."

Now, what is very strange is if I access \\DOMAINCONTROLLER\sysvol\DOMAIN\Policies\{GUID}\gpt.ini from the Windows 7 machine, the file is accessed fine.  (DOMAINCONTROLLER being the windows network machine name of the DC).    Likewise, if I use \\DOMAINCONTROLLER\dfs I can access the DFS hierarchy without any problems.   (If I use the old Windows 2000 style domain name (without the .blah.blah suffix)  it also works fine.)

If I ping DOMAINCONTROLLER or DOMAIN, both resolve to the correct IPv4 address (I'm not using IPv6).

The other 4 Windows 7 machines on the network are not having either of these issues.

I tried editing the lmhosts file to be sure DOMAIN was referring to the proper machine and all and it had no effect.

Still more baffling, if I run dfsutil /pktinfo I see "0:[\DOMAINCONTROLLER\dfs] AccessStatus: 0 ( ACTIVE TARGETSET )".   dfsutil /spcinfo looks correct too.

I've done dfsutil /pktflush and dfsutil  /spcflush as well as dfsutil cache domain flush, dfsutil cache provider flush and dfsutil cache referral flush.

Weird.

Any ideas?  Solutions?

UPDATE #1: I should add that this error just began occurring on June 5th 2012 at 2:17AM.    The Windows 7 VM's access to \\DOMAIN\SYSVOL and \\DOMAIN\DFS etc all worked fine prior to that time.

UPDATE #2: This just gets weirder and weirder.  I restarted the "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" service and for a minute \\DOMAIN\SYSVOL worked but then it went back to "An extended error has occurred."      Windows 2000 style \\SHORTDOMAIN\\SYSVOL and \\DOMAINCONTROLLER\SYSVOL both continue to work fine.

Hyper-V 2008R2 SP1 RemoteFX , virtual machine :windows 2003,client system:WIN7 SP1,3D Adapter can not be recognized.

My enviroment like this:

Hyper-V: 2008R2 SP1 installed RemoteFX

virtual machine :windows 2003(x64)

client system: WIN7 SP1

I hava add a 3D remoteFX adapter to the virtual machine .

Now I use the RDP to connect the virtual machine. In the device manager, there are two devices "Virtual Machine Bus " cannot be recognized. The adaper is "Standard VGA adaper". The 3D adapter is not used.

By when the virtual Machine is win7 sp1, everything will be ok. I want to know , if I want to use 3D remoteFX adapter, what kind of OS  the virtual Machine can be ?

Any answer will be appreciated.

Hello

I would like to configure a virtual machine to start after another virtual machine.

I use a Windows 2008 R2 Fail Over Cluster.

Thanx

Cluster validation (network configuration) keeps failing after power outage

Hello All,

After a power outage our Hyper-v failover cluster stopped funtioning properly.

Configuration is a 2 Node Hyper-v failover cluster (HVS-01 and HVS-02). HVS-01 and HVS-02 can both own the VMs however when HVS-02 restarts instead of failing over cluster the VMs to HVS-01 cluster completely shuts down. When I check the log I see that HVS-01 complains about connectivity to the Quorum is gone and stops the cluster services on HVS-01 as well.

When I look at the network everything is just the way they were before when I was working just fine.

When I run the Cluster Validation I get below error msg:

"DHCP status for network interface HVS-02.soandso.local - Local Area Connection Mgnt differs from network Cluster Network 1."

This is the management network and it does have a static IP so I'm not sure what this means???

ps: After the power outage cluster came online but the IPv6 was enabled for some network cards. I manually disabled them again if it makes any difference.

any ideas?

Thank you,

Unable to remove Hyper-V VM

I did a restore of a broken VM to a two-node Hyper-V Cluster, however, the machine didn't boot because the last backup was also corrupted. I deleted the VM from Hyper-V Manager and I thought everything was cleared until I saw that the VM still existed in SCVMM (slow refresh maybe?). When I tried and delete the VM from there, I get:

Error (1730): The selected action could not be completed because the virtual machine is not in a state in which the action is valid.

The machine is in a failed state.

When I go to Failover Cluster Manager, I don't see the VM under service and applications.  I reloaded Hyper-V Manager and machine is back!

When I go to the CSV, I see the machine folder that just contains a Virtual Machines folder which I can't open (don't have permissions to access with folder).  I'm also unable to delete the VM folder (you require permission to perform this action).

I'm at a loss on how to remove this machine. I realize I worked to quick to remove the bad machine, any easy way to clear whatever is holding access to this folder/machine? I don't want to interupt any machine if I can help it.

Poor VM disk performance impacts overall VM performance

Hi all,
we have a brand new two hosts Hyper-V cluster, Dell R610 (dual Intel Xeon E5645 2,40GHz 6 cores, 96 GB RAM) with MD3220i iSCSI storage (12 x 500 MB near line SAS, Windows 2008 R2 SP1, one Clustered Shared Volume about 4 TB. Two dedicated NICs in each host for iSCSI, jumbo frames, dedicated switches, MPIO. TCP Offloading and Receive Side Scaling are disabled, preferred Network for Cluster Shared Volumes Communication has been configured, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<Interface GUID>\TcpAckFrequency set to 1 for NICs to iSCSI storage.

Disk performance in VMs is very poor, and overall VM performance is unacceptable (just as an indication, opening Server Manager takes 30 seconds or more). I have tested disk performance with HD Tune Pro and compared them with a very similar infrastructure on VMware and I get more than three times as much average access times, up to ten times max access times, one third or less IOPS and average speed.

I really don't know what else to look into. Customer is starting to think that moving to VMware would be a more appropriate setup.

I also have to mention that at first setup network performance on the hosts was very low and operations like quick formatting a disk on the iSCSI storage were taking minutes instead of seconds and producing time out errors on iscsiprt in Event Viewer. That has been resolved disabling C States in BIOS (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000977) and TCP Offloading capabilities and Receive Side Scaling in the host OS.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks, Alessandro

Hyper-V and SmartCard USB Readers

We're running a number of Hyper-V W2K8 R2 servers, and need to be able to authenticate using smartcards through a USB smartcard reader.  Unfortunately, Hyper-V doesn't allow for USB devices.

Anyone have a solution to this issue?

Hyper-V will not start when motherboard controller is changed

0

Good Afternoon, and thank you in advance for any guidance on this issue.

I have a Windows 2008 Server that has a Hyper-V VM running on it.  We need to make some changes to the host OS in the BIOS of the Intel motherboard the system is running on.  When I go into the BIOS and change the controller that is being used, our host OS comes up fine (and the device that was requiring us to change the controller in the first place), but when we go to start the VM, the VM will not start because it cannot find its controller.

How can I get the VM to see the new controller?  I was going to go in under the old controller where both the host OS and the Hyper-V VM both work, remove the controller in the VM then reboot into the BIOS and change the controller.

Will this allow the VM to seek and find the new controller?  Or will I end up damaging the Hyper-V VM completely by removing the controller?

Before I go in and do anything I wanted to see if anyone has some advice and direction on how to best change the controller and have the VM come up properly.

Again, thank you in advance for any help and direction in this issue.

Unable to migrate VMs after power failure

0

Hello-

I have a 2-node cluster connected to shared iSCSI storage running 4 VMs. After an unexpected power failure (when are they ever expected?), I logged in to survey the damage and found that I can no longer migrate VMs from one node to the other, whether it be a live migration, a quick migration, or a shut down and move operation.

When I attempt a quick migration, I get a dialogue box that says 'A quick migration cannot be performed. Do you want to shut down and move the virtual machine(s) instead?

If I do the shut down and move, the VM appears to move over, but then will not start on the second node. The errors in the event log are:

ID 1205 'The Clustered service failed to bring clustered service or application 'VM_name' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.'

and

ID 1069 'Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration 'VM_name' in clustered service or application 'VM_name' failed.

and

ID 21502 'Virtual Machine 'VM_name' failed to start. 'VM_name' could not initialize. {Virtual machine ID blah blah blah}. The virtual machine could not be started because the hyppervisor is not running.'

Any thoughts on what to look at?

I've validated the configuration, everything passed. All networks are up and running.

Problem with connecting to Hyper-V management console

Hello there. I'm really stuck so thought it's high time I reached out to you guys. My issue is the following: we have а Windows Server 2008 machine with the hyper-v role installed. The machine is joined to a domain. All authenticated domain users can access the server through the hyper-v management console(mmc) nut one. When he connects to the hyper-v server it says "The operation on computer 'servername' failed." and then it shows that there are no vms to show. The server has at least 15 vms and everybody else can seen it. All computers and the server are on the same subnet. When the person logged to the hyper-v management console through my computer, he managed to see the virtual machines. He is unable to see them only on his computer. Do you have any recommendations on the issue? Thanks in advance for your time.

Convert VMWare 1.0.4 (Windows Server 2003 R2) to Hyper-V

0

I need to migrate a DC and an Exchange Server 2007 running under VMWare Server 1.0.4 to Hyper-V.  Everything I read talks about migrating from VMWare ESX to Hyper-V.  It's like nobody ever used VMWare Server 1.0.  Maybe not, but I'm stuck with that migration scenario now.  The VMWare Server 1.0.4 is hosted by Windows Server 2003 R2 x64.  The target machine with Hyper-V is Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.

This is a small network with only a 1-time migration to perform, so I can't spend a lot of money on an enterprise-class solution.

Is there anything out there to help me with this migration?

Microsoft Virtual BIOS failed to power on

I'm positive that Hypervisor is running. My processor is i7-860 and motherboard is Gigabyte P55M-UD2.  I'm a student (using R2 from Dreamspark) so I'm not very fimilar with this topic.  I would appriciate any help.  Thank you.

Hyper-V Guest VM's disappeared after orderly reboot (Not Virus Scanning Issue)

0
0

I wanted to perform some long overdue maintenance on a hyper-v host.  My setup is two Win2008 R2 Core Hyper-V machines with local disk storage (no san, no virus protection on the hosts).  I powered down the Guest OS's,  exported them from  Virtual1 and copied the to Virtual2.   The guest OS came up and worked no problem on Virtual2.   Later on in the day I powered down Virtual2.  When virtual2 came back up 2 of the 3 guest VM's have disappeared from the management console.

Some items of note...

  • There is no virus protection running on the hosts (others seem to have been having an issue with virus scanning).
  • Event logs show the orderly shutdown of the guest VM's,  event logs then show only 1 of the machines turning back on.
  • I see no useful errors in the event logs related to starting the machines back up
  • There is a single event log entry for "Hyper-v failed creating a new partition (status 11)".  Although, there is plenty of free RAM & Disk space

Anyone have any idea what's going on?  I'm kind of baffled as where to even begin looking.

Thanks for any help,

-eric

How should I set up my RAID array's for building a test lab server to follow along with the modules in the 6292 and 6294 courses?

0

I have:
- 2x 160gb sata drives, looking to RAID (Intel controller on-board)
- 2x 320gb sata drives, looking to RAID (Intel controller on-board)
- 2x 500gb sata drives, looking to RAID (Intel controller on-board)
- 1x 250gb sata drive (for OS) on the 6-port SATA PCI card, no RAID

My ASUS Maximus Formula board has 6 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports that supports RAID 0,1,5,10. Plus I've installed a 6-port SATA II PCI host card w/RAID 4x internal connectors SATA and 2x external eSATA connectors that supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 0+1, JBOD

(I will be getting 2 1TB drives in the future to add but this is what I have to work with for now.)

I am building a training/practice lab on this server running Windows 2008 R2 with Hyper-V to provide a real-world, hands-on platform so I can follow along and apply the knowledge and skills learned in the modules for Window 7 Client - 6292A and Planning and Managing Windows 7 Desktop Deployments and Environments modules for 6294A courses.

This lab has about 300 Gb of VMs space which I have built on another machine using VirturalBox. This server will be using Hyper-V for this lab and Windows 2008 R2 which will be installed on the 250 Gb SATA drive

Can any one give me some ideas on how I could set this up. I would like to RAID the VM drive for performance and have some form of redundancy with the others.

I figured a RAID 10 being I have little space for redundancy for VM drive.

Or,

RAID 0 = 2x 320 Gb = VMs
RAID 1 = 2x 500 Gb = Backup VMs & OS for redundancy
RAID 1 = 2x 160 Gb = Backup VMs & OS for redundancy

Please advise...

You are in Deep schtuck.

The solution with some fiddling is as follows
regedit
navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\Properties

export it

Rightclick Properties, permissions, click through to change permissions you cannot see, click advanced, owner tab and take ownership, ok back to properties, and then click to add a permission, and all will come back.

Ok Click out and back to properties,
export it again to another file
in that folder find "Security"

Delete the value

reboot server, re-attach any disks, and hey presto it works.

Many thanks to Microsoft Sydney for their help

This error is associated with Intel Server Managment software as well, I have seen it arounf a bit on S3200SHV and S3000AH boards

PCIe passthrough on Server 2012 Hyper-V?

Is it possible?

I want to expose my TV Tuner card directly to a VM, rather than use the network bridge if I can avoid it... since I'm waiting on Server 2012, the discussion should be relatable to that instead :)

Thanks!

Configure Hyper-V VM to be accessed via Network Thin Client

0

Hi all - apologies if this topic/question has been already covered.  I have a Windows 2008 Server running Hyper-V with several vm's configured (xp/vista etc).  I would like to know if its possible to boot directly into one of these vm's from a computer on the same internal network without loading/starting any local disk OS (so RDP etc would be out). So, on powering on a client (e.g. Laptop) the PXE/ BIOS would connect to the network and boot a pre-designated virtual machine (running on hypervisor re Server).  The configuration is as follows;

Server:
Windows 2008 Server
Role: Hyper-V
VM Image XP, Vista

Client(s)
Toshiba Laptop (Wireless)
Shuttle Computer etc

Problem
How to boot into VM XP Image without loading client OS (as thin as possible)

Thanks
Craig
