Error while changing settings of the VM through RSAT

$

0

OK, Scenario:

Workstation A: Windows 7 Professional with SP1, 64 bit with RSAT installed.

Hyper-V Server A: Windows Server 2012 Datacenter

File Server A: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1

All 3 joined to the same domain, the user is a Domain Admin.

Problem:

I want to mount and iso file on File server share into the DVD drive of a VM through RSAT. when I click apply, I get the "User Account does not have sufficient privilege to open attachment '\\path to server share\filename.iso'. Error: 'General access denied error'." followed by the 0x80070005 error code as the attached picture shows.

when I RDP into the Hyper-V Server and try the same thing, it goes through with no problem.

NTFS permission and share permission on the iso file has everyone:full control.

any suggestion why it is like this?

Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine Failure

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Host machine.  In Hyper-V, I created a WS 2012 VM. The VM starts out OK, but after a few hours of work (configure and install SharePoint 2013), starts throwing errors (Machine had to re-boot). Eventually, the VM becomes unstable and unable to re-boot. Last attempt threw this error in Hyper-V Event Manager:

'BISP2013' has encountered a fatal error.  The guest operating system reported that it failed with the following error codes: ErrorCode0: 0x7A, ErrorCode1: 0x400207A0, ErrorCode2: 0xC0000185, ErrorCode3: 0x57BA6860, ErrorCode4: 0x40F4234.  If the problem persists, contact Product Support for the guest operating system.  (Virtual machine ID 7E140D89-25B9-4D3B-835B-7BB882C629BB)

This has happened on multiple attempts occasionally ending with Error 0Xc000021a.  Creating WS 2012 R2 VMs does not present this problem.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have a 40GB nic in HOST. I have created a virtual switch and assigned to the VM.

In host I see 40GB Link speed but in VM i see 10 Gbps only.  Virtual switch does not support 40Gbps or any configuration issue?

Thanks in advance.

2012 R2 RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter Greyed Out

$

I am running a home Server with 2012 R2 with the Hyper-V role installed, with about 5 Windows 8.1 VM's.  I'm trying to get RemoteFX working, here's my hardware config:

  • E5-4610 Processor (Supports Slat)
  • Nvidia GTX 770 (Driver supports WDDM 1.3 with direct X 11)
  • Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 (All bios virtual settings enabled)

When I install the Video card driver (tried different versions using windows 8 and windows 8.1 drivers) initially it shows me the checkbox to "Use this GPU with RemoteFX" However after a reboot it says no supported video cards are available.

Before the reboot after installing the driver when it shows the GPU is capable of remote FX, I am not able to add a RemoteFX 3d adapter to a virtual machine because it is greyed out.

After I reboot, if i uninstall and re-install the driver the GTX 770 is available to use again but I still cannot add the RemoteFX adapter to a virtual machine's hardware.

I have done the following:

  1. Verified in DXdiags that the direct X version is 11
  2. Verified in DXdiags that the driver model is WDDM 1.3
  3. Verified the E5-4610 Proc supports Slat or Extended Page Tables
  4. Enabled all the Virtualiztion VT-x settings in the Bios
  5. Verified the video card is supported and certified in 2012 R2
  6. Verified the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Agent is started in Services.msc
  7. Tried the newest and oldest video drivers for 8.1, and newest for windows 8
  8. I am using Generation 1 vm's as i heard Generation 2 is having problems with RemoteFX
  9. Tried Generatino 2 VM's, there is no option to add RemoteFX hardware
  10. Tried a different GTX 550Ti video card, same issue
  11. Performed all Windows updates for server 2012 R2

Please advise on the next steps to be taken to get RemoteFX working, or if any of the hardware I mentioned above does not support RemoteFX in 2012 R2.

Thanks.

Setting up LAB AD Sites in Hyper-V

$

Hey all,

I have setup my lab within Hyper-V 2012 R2 with Server 2012 R2 running AD, DNS, DHCP, etc. However I want to strip my lab back to hyper-v and start again to use this for setting up and testing AD Sites.

So my question is how do I go about having an AD structure with a root domain and two child domains without having them all on one virtual network and able to talk directly to each other. So I would like DHCP in each of the child domains without them being able to see each other however they should still be able to speak to the Root Domain. Obviously I am trying to test having a split site AD on a LAN.

Is this possible or am I better to add extra physical NIC's to my Hyper-V Server and use a physical firewall to setup what can talk to each other?

Thanks,

Charles

VMQ and Teaming Mode Question

$

I am having trouble deciding if I should go with SUM or MIN mode.  Here is my config info:

2 Dell R620 host servers - Each server has 128G RAM, 12 NICs, 2 CPUs.
Here is the result of the processor script:
PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-WmiObject -Class win32_processor | format-table -Property NumberOfCores, NumberOfLogicalProcessors -AutoSize

NumberOfCores NumberOfLogicalProcessors
------------- -------------------------
            6                        12
            6                        12

I am using 2 of the NIC ports of each server for dedicated iSCSI to my EQL.  The other 10 are in a team.  The team settings are currently Switch Independent and Address Hash, No Standby adapter.

I tried Load balancing mode: Hyper V Port (SUM mode) but kept getting errors in my event log about overlapping.  It seems like SUM mode is the best way to go but how can I properly set up 10 NICs with the 2 processors (6 cores and 12 logical processors each) to not overlap?

Is it even worth using VMQ with just 2 host servers?  We plan on eventually running about 6-8 VMs on each host.  Also someone told me that Live Migration only uses the first NIC port, even if they are teamed, to move VMs if you are in a 2 node cluster.  I'm not sure if this is true but in Task Manager, the network activity never goes much above 1G when migrating 3 VMs simultaneously.

Some additional info on our v-nics and vlans:
PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-VMNetworkAdapterVlan

VMName                VMNetworkAdapterName Mode     VlanList
------                -------------------- ----     --------
                        LiveMigration                      Access     102
                        Cluster                               Access     101
                        Management                       Access      90
BaseInstall-2012R2Std   Network Adapter     Untagged
BPD-IT7                 Network Adapter            Untagged

The minimum bandwidth QOS weights are LM = 25, Cluster = 25 and Mgmt = 15

I have the VM traffic using the v-switch that these v-nics are assigned to.  I have the "DefaultFlowMinimumBandwidthWeight" set on the switch to 35.

Thanks for any help.

Problems converting a 2008 R2 server into a Hyper-V environment.

Hello.

I have a 2008 R2 Standard server running on a IBM 3650 M4 platform and I wish to convert this to a vm so that I can run this in my Hyper-V environment, but I'm running into some trouble as I do so.

I have used the latest version of "disk2vhd.exe" to create the vhdx-file and had no problems during this procedure, but when I create a new vm and attach the disk I will not boot.  The first and only thing that appears when started is a blinking prompt in top left corner.

The Hyper-V manager is running on a 2012 R2 Standard.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hyper-V cluster validation report "Found duplicate physical address" on nic team interfaces.

$

I recently built a Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster with 5 nodes. The validation report shows “duplicate physical address” error (error text pasted below).

The hardware: HP BladeSystem – servers are BL460c blades, in a c7000 enclosure, connected to HP Virtual Connect switches.

Each server has 2 physcal nics, teamed in Windows. In the NIC Teaming console, I created the following Team Interfaces and assigned each a VLAN ID:

“Team1” (the default team)

“Team1 - VLAN 204 – Management”

“Team1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB”

“Team1 - VLAN 211 -Exchange DAG Replication”

I also created 2 HV Virtual Switches. Neither one allows management interface to share. They are assigned to “Team1” and “Team1 - VLAN 211 -Exchange DAG Replication” respectively.

Therefore, in Network Connection, I see the 2 physical Ethernet nics, and 4 “virtual” nics. Only 2 of them have IP addresses assigned: Management and HB. These are the two that the validation wizard complains about.

The MAC address is not configurable in the NIC Teaming console, so I don’t see a way to resolve this error, except to use separate physical nics. I don’t want to do that because a) I would lose the benefits of the bandwidth aggregation that Virtual Connect provides, and b) When creating an Interface on a Team in Windows, it looks like it ALWAYS gives it the same MAC address, so that should be a supported configuration.

Everything works just fine, and there are no other errors or IP conflicts or anything else. But I really want to fix it because I don’t know what unknown problems this may be causing.

From the Cluster Validation report:

Found duplicate physical address 10-60-4B-A9-4A-30 on node Cluster201.OurDomain.local adapterTeam1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster201.OurDomain.local adapterTeam1 - VLAN 204 - Management.

Found duplicate physical address F0-92-1C-13-3C-2C on node Cluster202.OurDomain.local adapterTeam1 - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster202.OurDomain.local adapterTeam1 - VLAN 204 - Management.

Found duplicate physical address 3C-4A-92-DE-1E-74 on node Cluster211.OurDomain.local adapter VC-Team - VLAN 212 - 2012HB and node Cluster211.OurDomain.local adapterVC-Team - VLAN 204 - Management.

Thanks!

Hyper V cluster with Local storage

I have a requirement to deliver a 2 node Hyper V cluster on Windows Server 2012 r2 with no shared storage. I thought that the new Shared nothing storage was the solution but it appears to be only for standalone hosts with live migration set up. I have procured the additional disks for the local disk and have now got the problem where I am unable to proceed with my original concept of a Hyper V cluster with shared nothing storage. :(. can this definitely not be done?

if not I need to come up with another option at no additional cost?

Guest two node Failover Cluster with SAS HBA and Windows 2012 R1

Hi all, i have two IBM x3560 brand new servers with V3700 IBM Storage. The Servers are connected to the storage through four SAS HBA adabters (two HBA's on each server). I want to create a two node guest Fileserver Failover Cluster. I can present the LUN's to the guest machines, but when i 'm running the cluster creation wizard it can't see any disk. I can see the disks on disk management console. Is there any way to achive this (the cluster creation) using my SAS HBA presented disks, or i have to use iSCSI to present the disks to my cluster?

Thank you in advance, George

Moving Hyper-V VM to another disk

$

Hi all, I have read several forums about moving the Hyper-V VM to another disk but I still don't understand on the replication side. I have two physical server running Hyper-V and it's HA between each other with all VM running replication. I have install a new disk on both plysical machine and both need to move all the VM to the new disk.

Please let me know if my steps are correct.

In this scenario, I have 2 hour downtime so I could power off all VMs:

1) Pause all replication for all VMs.

2) Export the replicated powered-off VMs on the inactive server.

3) Copy it to the new disk.

4) Import the VMs from the new location.

5) Power off the VMs on the active server

6) Export the VMs.

7) Copy it to the new disk location

8) Export the VMs from the new location

9) Power up the VMs and start the replication

10) Delete the old vhd on the old location

Qns 1: Will the replication know the new location on the other server or as long the VM on both server are on the exact location so it will automatically replicate over ?

In another scenario let's say I don't have any downtime and just for my knowledge:

1) Pause all replication for all VMs.

2) Export the replicated powered-off VMs on the inactive server.

3) Copy it to the new disk.

4) Import the VMs from the new location.

5) Failover the VMs to the inactive server

6) Power off the VMs on the other server

7) Export the VMs.

8) Copy it to the new disk location

9) Export the VMs from the new location

10) Power up the VMs

11) Failover the VMs

12) Delete the old vhd files at the old location

Qns 2: Will the failover work in this case after I have change the location of the other server ?

VSS Error in writer Hyper-V

Well, how did not get any results in searches, then checked the versions of the IC on client machines as clusters migrated from 2008 to 2012 some were outdated, updated them, even just to leave everything compliance.

So I decided to clear the "Backup (volume snapshot)" and now he backs up but does the same linux machines, saving the machine and causing downtime of it, and even if you are a linux machine with this option it can not perform the backup this because it tries utilizr VSS method (I think).

Please, anyone help-me?

thanks!

Hyper-V virtual wireless swtich appears to be crashing wireless network

I am running a SOHO setup out of an office and it appears machines running Hyper-V through wireless is causing the wireless network to crash. I have read that in the past, wireless is not supported fully with Hyper-V. Would this still be the case?

Our main server is running Hyper-V and there are no issues.

Peachtree PAWEncrypt AcquireOurContainer Error Hyper-V

$

Alright so i know there's posts for this all over the internet, but i haven't seen a case of the error in the same environment that Ive gotten the error in. So to anyone who isn't familiar with the error:

It occurs with the Sage50/Peach tree software and has either something to do with .net or is a windows related issue. Sage50/Peach tree suggests reinstalling windows, or deleting the user account that is causing the error and recreating the account in order to fix it(which on a working domain is obviously not a good decision).

In my company we are running Hyper-V with a small pool of machines (which run the Peach tree software). A few weeks ago we had a power failure in our city for a few hours over the weekend. Prior to the failure the software was working fine on Hyper-V, however following the failure our remote users get a error message saying "PAWEncrypt AcquireOurContainer Error -<Numbers>". When i use the Hyper-V console at the server i have no issues, so that one is a tad confusing.

Ive tried updating IE (which worked until i logged off then back on to the machine), We have also tried the regedits suggested on the various pages regarding this issue. I've seen a lot of this issue out there but none of the issue while in Hyper-V, I'm wondering if there's any guru's out there with a possible fix. We can always blow the pool away and recreate it but the issue there is windows Licenses. I'm trying to not throw them away if possible.

I did call sage50 which they said that this issue is generally indicating that there's a problem in windows regarding the users account on the domain(But we only have this issue remotely so i would think that the account is fine).

Also one note in case anyone else is visualizing Peach tree, Ive fixed this issue once in the past. I had to blow the pool away and recreate from a new gold image. I wouldn't suggest doing that unless your totally out of options.

We are running Hyper-V on server 2012. And as for Steady State, It has never been on any of my servers.

The tenant vEthernet virtual network is showing up as a clustered network in failover clustering

Hi everyeone,

I have an odd issue.

I'm running hyper-v 2012R2 and VMM 2012R2

I've created a virtual NIC for a tenant, I've created a VM and connected that to the VM using the VM Network so VM can access the network with no issue. so far so good.

the issue here is the fact that the vEthernet adapter is showing as a clustered network in failoverclustering which was not the case in 2008R2

Can anyone comment on that?

Hyper-V VSS writer ecnouter errors during taking VSS snapshot on Windows 2012 R2

When taking VSS snapshot with Hyper-V VSS writer on Windows 2012 R2, there are frequently some warning/error logs in Windows Event log. This will make the Hyper-V VSS writer goes to a bad state and in BCD, the BACKUP_METADATA is also missing for the problematic VM.

The logs in Windows Event log are as below:

In Windows Log->Application, there will be logs as:

The problematic VMs are with Windows OS, Windows 2008R2, Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1.

My question is:

What is the cause of this problem? The event logs are not understandable at all.

How should I fix this problem?

Hyper-V 3.0 VM stuck in "Stopping" state

We are running Hyper-V on a 2012 server and for the 20nd time in as many months I've logged into a VM and restarted or migrated to another host it but it's stuck in the "stopping" state in Hyper-V 3.0 and doesn't give me any Turn Off, Shutdown, Save, Pause or Reset options.  The only thing I've been able to do is to schedule a time to reboot the Hyper-V server.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there any command I can run get the VM  top turn off  w/o having to reboot or restart the Hyper-V service?

Our host environment as below:

HP C7000 Blade Chasis

16x ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Server (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 0 @ 2.00GHz (8 Cores) - 256GB Ram)

Blades server have Hp FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port

2x HP VC Flex-10 Enet Module on Chassie

HP VC 8Gb 20-Port FC Module on Chassie

Also We turned off tcp checksum offloading but it didn't work.

We've opened case to HP support but they analyzing our system and didn't find any problem to themself.

Does anybody have any fixes for these problems?

Cluster Quorum Disk failing inside Guest cluster VMs in Hyper-V Cluster using Virtual Disk Sharing Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi, I'm having a problem in a VM Guest cluster using Windows Server 2012 R2 and virtual disk sharing enabled.

It's a SQL 2012 cluster, which has around 10 vhdx disks shared this way. all the VHDX files are inside LUNs on a SAN. These LUNs are presented to all clustered members of the Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster, via Cluster Shared Volumes.

Yesterday happened a very strange problem, both the Quorum Disk and the DTC disks got the information completetly erased. The vhdx disks themselves where there, but the info inside was gone.

The SQL admin had to recreated both disks, but now we don't know if this issue was related to the virtualization platform or another event inside the cluster itself.

Right now I'm seen this errors on one of the VM Guest:

We don't know if this can happen again, what if this happens on disk with data?! We don't know if this is related to the virtual disk sharing technology or anything related to virtualization, but I'm asking here to find out if it is a possibility.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.
