Hyper -V Win 8 Pro, media option -add disk is not available on some created VM

0

Hi,

installed Hyper-V on Windows Pro

1.I created VM generation 2 with win2012 server eval.

2.using sysprep to create clone

3. created 3 copy of the file

4.installed 3 machine from file (DC,node1,node2)

4.on DC created domain

5.joined node1 and node2 to domain

6.created cluster

When I was going to install SQL server from ISO to node1 and node2 I noticed that in media action option to attach disk is not available (it show no disk to display) on node1 and node2

However on DC machine  I can attach ISO disk!

Why option to attach disk is not available on other machine and how make it available?

Currently I access disk from node1 and2  from domain using \\DC\D\setup.exe

P.S

few days ago I created 3 VM with Win2008R2 server (join then on domain and created cluster),add disk optiion availbale on all win2008R2 machines

Thank you

Alex

VHD boot failure - how to change from PERC3 to IDE?

0
0

I had a PowerEdge 2400 with a PERC3 RAID controller and 6 hard drives in a RAID-5 array that I need to convert to a Hyper-V virutal machine.
It's running Windows Server 2003 and I'm trying to use Microsoft's DISK2VHD tool, which has worked mulitple times for me in the past, but only when the primary hard drive controller is IDE.  The actual conversion of the physical disk to a VHD worked just fine, but it would not boot into Hyper-V (2008 R2 or 2012 version).  Sometimes it gives be the BSOD with 07B inaccessible boot device error.  Other times it just reboots over and over again.  I've tried configuring the VM to connect the VHD to either the IDE or the SCSI controller, but it failed with both.

I'm pretty certain the problem lies with the fact that Windows on the VHD is configured for a PERC3 driver and there is no PERC3 controller in Hyper-V.

Unfortunately, I do not have the PE2400 any more, so any options involving installing a cheap IDE card or taking a new disk image can't happen.  All i have is the VHD, which i can attach and access the contents of the hard drive.  How can i fix the Windows installation in the VHD so it will attempt to boot up as if connected to an IDE controller?

Thanks in advance

Checking Host and guest VM's processor, memory utilization in hyper-v

Hi,

We have a Dell Server with 12 processors and 256GB RAM.

Installed Hyper-V server 2012 R2 as the host OS and configured 10 VM's with windows server 2008 R2 and 2012 as the guest OS using Hyper-V Manager.

Everything was fine till yesterday... but few servers are running pretty slow,so checked one of the VM guest.it shows memory utilization as 80%.

How and where do I check the all the VM guest and host servers processor and memory utilization ?

I checked this blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tvoellm/archive/2009/04/23/monitoring-hyper-v-performance.aspx. In the blog, there is mention on performance counters, but I could not figure out how to monitor or get the details of those counters for review purpose. what tools should we use or need to enable any settings in the hyper-v manager .

Wanted to know ,is there anything I need to enable to monitor those and will that affect the presently running nature of VM's and Host server ?

Thanks.

Cannot mount ISO from remote share in Clustered Hyper-v R2 if FCM runs on remote machine

If I run Failover Cluster manager on Hyper-V 2012 R2 host itself, I can mount iso that resides on another server (remote share). That was done via share option/security/cifs delagation (does it really need to be that complicated?)

But if I run FCM snapin from another machine (as one should do, as Hyper-V should NOT have GUI installed) via RSAT then there is no way i can mount iso. I always get access denied error

Any ideas?

initial replication fails repeatedly

2102R2 hosts. Start initial replication for VM and after a period of time it fails, I resume replication and it goes on for a while longer and fails again. The event log shows Event ID 33680, followed immediately by 32086, followed immediately 32022. I cannot figure out what is causing the failure and the event id's provide no information. I am not sure how to start troubleshooting this one.

Windows guest network performance

Hello,

We have noticed last week that several backups tasks where taking twice the time they used to take, so we checked disk and network performance and determined that network performance dropped to 200Mbps on Windows VM guests on our three node 2012 hyper-v cluster, while it used to be around 900Mbps when testing with iperf to an external linux phisical host with 1Gbps NIC, and linux VM guests (CentOS) on the same cluster are performing as usual at 900Mbps to an external physical Host.

Running iperf test between two Windows VM Guests running on the same Hyper-v Node results on 550Mpbs, the same test between two a Linux and a Windows VM's on the same hyper-v hosts shows the same bandwidth, and same test between two linux VM's performs at 1,7Gpbs average.

Integration services version on Windows guests is 6.2.9200.16384 for Win 2k3 and 6.2.9.16433 for Win 2008

We have updated Intel NIC driver on all three hyperv hosts and performance still is poor. It seems to be related to vSwitch configuration, but as I'm talking about a production environment I would like to know your opinion about this and if it could be related to a Windows update or a Integration services version problem.

Hyper-v failed to enable replication. The virtual machine is not in a valid state to perform the operation.

I was able to replicate 2 out 5 VMs on our server but I am not sure what this error refers to.  Any ideas... The VMs are up and Running

Migrate Hyper v server

Hello All

Currently we have Hyper V server based on windows server 2008 R2.We are using Windows server backup to backup the host and the Guests VM s.Guest VM s  include Windows sbs 2008 , other windows 2008 R2 servers and windows  XP and windows 7 clients .

We have purchased a new physical server and planning to install windows server 2012 R2 , install the Hyper v server role and migrate all VM s from the old Hyper v server.

Our management has decided to use the  physical hard drives which are currently being used on the current Hyper v server  on the new hyper v server.

Based on the above information what would be the best method that we can take to get the migration completed? Can we use the current Hyper backup top extract data on the new hyper v server and then import the VM s onto the new server

what are the things that we need to be careful when it comes to Licensing ?

Many thanks

Remote Hyper-V Manager: Unable to establish communication between server and client

Hi everybody,

I know that my problem is not a new one and there are tons of post and blogs that talking on it. But it seem that my case is a little different because all solutions that I found doesn't work.

Let present the case: I have 2 Hyper-V Server 2012 in a datacenter (call it Host1 and Host2). The datacenter is connected to my office though a VPN managed by our ISP. From my computer in my office (Call it Test and he run under Windows Server 2012), I can remotely manage both servers with Server Manager (File, Storage, Hyper-V, ...). When I open Hyper-V Manager, I can only manage the VM running on Host1. For Host2, I receive the message "RPC Server Unavailable. Unable to establish communication between"Host2" and "Test". But I can manage Hyper-V host settings, Virtual Switches, ... The only things that I can manage is the VM running on this host.

The problem is not present between the 2 host.

After reading a lot of things, I not find how I can resolve this. Somebody can help me?

Thanks in advance.

why is that?

Not able to manage virtual machines when they are off in a Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster environment

Hi I'm wondering if anyone else has encounter this weird problem: I have a 3-node Windows 2012 enterprise hyper-v cluster. If a virtual machine is shut off I can't manage it. When I right click on the virtual machine and choose Settings it gives me an error" Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer "hyper-v-host1" because the object was not found". But if I move the virtual machine to a different node then everything will be fine(doesn't matter if I move it back or not). To me it feels like the host is not able to refresh the virtual machine's settings and by moving the VM it is able to refresh and let me change the settings after.

Any help is appreciated.

Why are my guest VMs running in slow motion ?

Hi everyone !

Here is my setup:

2 servers (Hyper-v / Xeon E5620 / 16Go each) running in cluster. Connected to a QNAP TS-859U+ NAS thru a ProCurve 6108 with 2x1GB trunked ports.

There are 11 guest VMs all running at very poor speed. For instance it takes up to 1 hour to complete less than 10 Windows Server updates.

When I'm checking the switch or the NAS status, it appears that bandwidth usage is extremely low: I've got 1-4% usage top on both ports of the switch. And no more than 4-5Mo/s of read / write operations on the QNAP ressources monitor.

I really don't understand what's going wrong with this quite simple setup so I hope you guys can help me out !

Thanks everyone and sorry for that bad english you have to read...

Hyper-V VSS writer ecnouter errors during taking VSS snapshot on Windows 2012 R2

When taking VSS snapshot with Hyper-V VSS writer on Windows 2012 R2, there are frequently some warning/error logs in Windows Event log. This will make the Hyper-V VSS writer goes to a bad state and in BCD, the BACKUP_METADATA is also missing for the problematic VM.

The logs in Windows Event log are as below:

In Windows Log->Application, there will be logs as:

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,

the error is likely to reoccur.

. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

Operation:

The problematic VMs are with Windows OS, Windows 2008R2, Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1.

My question is:

What is the cause of this problem? The event logs are not understandable at all.

How should I fix this problem?

Hyper-v guest loses network if host hibernates

Hi

I have a laptop running Windows 8.1. This hosts a hyper-v guest running Windows Server 2012 x64 Standard. From the host I, go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\ Network Connections. I right-click my ethernet connection, right-click and select properties. I click the Sharing tab and enable connection sharing. I then start my guest VM and connect to it using remote desktop. At this point all is good, the guest has internet access. However the problem comes, if I close the lid on my laptop to put it into hibernation. When I wake the laptop by opening the lid, the remote desktop session continues to run and I can work on the guest but it has lost its internet connection. The only way I can seem to get it back is to reboot then guest - then all is good again.

Does any know if it's possible to avoid the need for a reboot of the guest following a hibernate on the host?

Thanks,

Rob.

External switch connectivity issues on Windows 8.1

Hello,

I have a problem which is driving me crazy for a few days now. I have a Windows 8.1 Enterprise desktop PC with Hyper-V installed on it. I have created an External virtual switch in Hyper-V manager and connected it to my one and only physical wired network adapter. I have ticked the checkbox to allow management host to share the adapter. I have installed a Windows 2008 R2 Standard VM on it and connected the network adapter to the External virtual switch.

The problem:

The host has internet and LAN connectivity.
The VM has no internet nor LAN connectivity, but is able to ping the host.
The host can ping the VM.
The VM does not receive an IP address via DHCP (yes there is a DHCP server active in our LAN)
Assigning a static IP address to the VM does not work (it can only ping the host, not the LAN or internet).

It seems like the External virtual switch is acting like an internal one. Atleast, it shows the same behaviour. The network card in the desktop is an Intel 82578DM wired network card.

What am I doing wrong here? I am using the exact same setup as on our 2012 Datacenter servers which are working perfectly fine. Is there maybe something wrong with the network adapter driver?

Scalable hardware solution for Hyper-V

Hello,
I need to install a server 2012 r2 with Hyper-V and was looking for a scalable hardware solution to launch my VM.
I've never had the opportunity to install a blade server, my question is the server blade has a single operating system and resources are seen globally or each node has its own operating system?

I was thinking of using blade servers Super Micro, but support tells me that I need to install on each node Windows 2012, because the nodes are independent.

I have to start about 30 VM, HW solution which you think might be possible?

Thanks in advance

Sending Keys through VM Console incorrect Ascii mapping (openSUSE)?

0
0

Hi All,

I'm using a Hyper-V environment, and using Powershell to send keys via the console to the SUSE VM for setup scripting. This all works fine with CentOS, Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu.

However, with SUSE 13 when I sent keys from powershell using the following commands:
$VMConsole = Connect-VMConsole
$KB = $VMConsole.VSMKB
$KB.TypeText("root")

It does not work. On further investigation I found that using TypeKey or TypeText it sends the keystrokes using standard ascii table as found at:http://www.bluesock.org/~willg/dev/ascii.html

However, SUSE interprets using a different ascii table, found at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd375731(v=vs.85).aspx

I can provide this by sending:
$KB.TypeKey(0x6B)
This produces the character + on the console.

Whereas, it should produce the character: k

This only seems to happen on OpenSUSE (at least it doesn’t happen on CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora).

Have you got any ideas? I’ve tried resetting the keyboard to US layout on the SUSE VM, and I’ve also tried using loadkeys us.

Cheers
Will
