Hyper-V could not initialize (rights?)

$

Hello,

I have an WIN2012 R2 Server.
Unfortunatley it is serving as a DC (I know this is not recommended).

I set up the HYPER-V role and when I start I receive with a newly created VM (no etwork connected yet):

'TEST111' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID 49608249-F381-43E8-BCCF-F6C61CDE68A0)
Event ID 3040

Most likely it has something to do with the rights. I tried to apply this thread, but no luck:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ae8a90a2-4251-4fbd-b644-72dcd4b5f08c/error-an-attempt-to-initialize-vm-saved-state-failed-when-starting-any-vm?forum=winserverhyperv

I reinstalled the role and it still does not work. It looks like the old Settings of the hyper-v program stay on the machine after deinstalling the role, because after the reboots and Setting it up again it Shows the old Settings.

The process Monitor Shows:

HKCR\Applications\vmconnect.exe : NAME NOT FOUND Desired Access: Read.

Q:

Is there a way to completly clean the hyper-v stuff?

It might be that hyper-v only accepts local admin users (especially on a DC)?

Teaming with Windows 2012 DC (Datacenter Edition) Hyper V Host servers

HI

We are preparing 2 Windows 2012 R2 DC edition servers, each of them has 4 NICs, planning to configure both HV host and guest clustering. One NIC will be used for host / HV management and Host cluster traffic, other 3 NICs will be configured in a single team. These 3 NICs are connected to 2 differenet switches and our intention is to utilize the full bandwidhth. Teaming is configured as Switch Independent / Dynamic load balancing mode. Is this the right configuration? Also each of the VMs will configured in different VLANs through VLAN IDs.

Thansk in advance

Hi there!
i've 1 week, that could not connect from my Windows 8, to virtual machines that are running in physical server, with OS, Free HyperV 2012 R2 (as in picture).

What could be the problem for this?

I've firewall off, i've restart my Windows 8, but nothing is changed.
Previosly, i was run very good, from 60 days already.

I tried also, from another server, that has WIndows 2012 (but not R2), and the same problem.

Dear all,

I have used Disk2VHD to perform a P2V conversion of a W3K SP2 server. However when I boot the VHD in W8K R2 SP1 Hyper-V console there is no mouse input. I have installed the integration services via the actions menu and also ensured that all the integration services are offered.

Can anyone offer any assistance on how to get the mouse input to work?

Hyper-V VHD questions

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of setting up a virtual environment for a friends company.  We bought a Dell PowerEdge T620 and have setup the following:

Raid 1 w/ 2x300GB drives for the Host OS

Raid 10 w/ 4x600GB drives for the VM's

I setup Windows Server 2012 std and installed the hyper-v role on this server.  I created one virtual machine named DC for the domain controller on a 64GB fixed disk.  I also created another virtual machine named SRV, which will run SQL, there medical billing software and also run as there file server.  This server also has a 64GB fixed disk for the OS.

At this point, I have 986GB of unused space on the Raid 10.  I am looking to setup the data drives for "SRV" for SQL server and the file server portion.  Should I just create small fixed disks for these functions?  Should I do dynamic disks for the file server and a fixed disk for the SQL portion?  How should I go about dividing up the remaining space (986GB)?  I was thinking it would be better to do smaller VHD's for each function, that way it's easier for backup's.  Or should I just do one large VHD (986GB) for all of the above?

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

2008r2 vm with multiple snap shots

hi,

i have multiple vm's and we are looking at migrating them to hyper v 2012r2.  the issue is that all of the servers have multiple snap shots.

from reading and a test i did mysel i have come to the conclusion that you cant take snap shots with you when migrating to 2012r2?  i tried the export/import.

the following saved state errors were reported.  virtual machine saved state file version is incompatible.

i then have the option to delete and save.

is there a way past this using a 4rd party tool or is it just it simply wont work due to the different systems.

thanks

How to set up domain controllers when migrating to a virtualized environment.

I converting about 25 servers in one forest with 2 domains to be Hyper-V guest vms, to be spread out across about 9 physical hosts.

I have read about the risks of relying on virtual machine DC's but I have not found a thorough discussion of best practices, regarding both the domains that the vms belong to and how to configure DCs for the physical hosts themselves.  I am looking at having the hosts on their own separate domain.

This issue must have received a lot attention -- can someone point me to a good reference, one that considers the costs and benefits of have dedicated physical machines for DCs?

Hypervisor failed starting

I am having this issue after loading everything and trying to start a virtual guest.  I know about the bios settings for VT and Execute Bit.  I currently don't have those settings in my BIOS and I'm working with Sun to get those added.  They aren't being the most cooperative with doing this.  They keep saying contact Phoenix and Phoenix is saying that Sun needs to do this update.  I have a Sun Ultra 40 M2 with an AMD-V processor.  My question is that I can turn on Hardware Assisted Virtualization in Virtual PC and Virtual Server without having those settings in my BIOS so shouldn't I be able to launch guests in Server 2008 Virtualization as well?

Shared Nothing Live Migration Fails Event ID's 20306,21024 and 21502

Hi, I have a strange issue here, with my 12 Node Hyper-V 2012R2 Cluster, I can live Migrate Between All nodes except ONE.! Node 7.

I can quick Migrate to this Node, and Live migrate from it. but cannot Live Migrate any of my virtual Machines to it.

I have a dedicated NIC team for Live Migration, no DNS, its none routable 10.201.242.x network. the IP is pingable from all other nodes, and network status is all correct in the Cluster manager.

Network binding is correct, and AV is off, firewall is also off on all my nodes.

I am attempting the live migrate from the cluster manager. not SCVMM (which also fails too).

Events logged are in order :-

Hyper-V VMMS event ID 20306 No connection could be made because the target actively refused it.

Hyper-V VMMS event ID 21024 Virtual Machine Migration failed at source.

Hyper-V-High-Availability 21111 Live Migration Failed

Hyper-V-High-availability 21502 Connection could not be made because the target machine actively refused it.

any help or ideas appreciated, scratching my head on this one. !!

thanks

Hi a Quick question about setting up the Hyper-V Replica Broker Role.

I do have a lab cluster running already, is there anything I should be aware of, is it ok to install this role on a cluster already running Virtual Servers. I don't want to break my lab cluster :-)

Prevent creation child object SPC "windows virtual machine"

The creation of the SPC "Windows Virtual Machine" is causing problems for AD operations.  Computers with this child SPC object cannot be deleted using automated scripts and this is causing workflow problems where we are using Hyper-V to stage sample client OS computers.

Is there a way to prevent or stop Hyper-V from making that SPC object for client OSes?  I would like to make it so that the Client OSes on a particular Hyper-V host do not create extra SPC objects in AD.  This way I don't have to re-write all my scripts and services that Delete computer accounts from AD.  When computer objects have child objects, I think they become containers in the eyes of AD and so cannot be deleted using AD calls that work fine on computer objects that do not have children.

Virtual Machines loose network connectivity in Windows 2012 Hyper-V Cluster

Running a two node Hyper V cluster on Windows 2012. One of the nodes all the virtual machines stopped responding to network connections. Checking thru Hyper-V manager showed all nodes running correctly and no errors on the VMs.

Moving the VMs to the second node caused network issues to go away, all nodes working correctly. Moving a VM back to the first node caused its network to drop again. Rebooted first Hyper-V node and then moved VM back. Everything working.

No errors in the Hyper-V node or VM. VirtualNIC did not show any disconnects or errors. All very strange.

Servers are Dell 710 PowerEdge using Broadcom NetXtreme NICs.

Windows guest network performance

Hello,

We have noticed last week that several backups tasks where taking twice the time they used to take, so we checked disk and network performance and determined that network performance dropped to 200Mbps on Windows VM guests on our three node 2012 hyper-v cluster, while it used to be around 900Mbps when testing with iperf to an external linux phisical host with 1Gbps NIC, and linux VM guests (CentOS) on the same cluster are performing as usual at 900Mbps to an external physical Host.

Running iperf test between two Windows VM Guests running on the same Hyper-v Node results on 550Mpbs, the same test between two a Linux and a Windows VM's on the same hyper-v hosts shows the same bandwidth, and same test between two linux VM's performs at 1,7Gpbs average.

Integration services version on Windows guests is 6.2.9200.16384 for Win 2k3 and 6.2.9.16433 for Win 2008

We have updated Intel NIC driver on all three hyperv hosts and performance still is poor. It seems to be related to vSwitch configuration, but as I'm talking about a production environment I would like to know your opinion about this and if it could be related to a Windows update or a Integration services version problem.

Application wont run in background

Hyper-V Virtual Server 2003 SP2.

I have a winform application set up to run as a scheduled task every 30 minutes.
The application starts on schedule but does not do any processing until I log into the virtual machine and show the form.
It is not waiting for a button click or anything; it just seems to wait until the form is rendered by logging in.
Is this normal? (I am new to virtual servers).

Ping from VM to ouside fails: 'Redirect Network (New nexthop: ...)'

$

Hi,

after installing Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate with the Windows Phone 8 "emulator", my old Hyper-V VM cannot access the outside network anymore. My network is like this, the VM uses the PC's shared network IP as the gateway.

[ PC-NIC (shared with internal switch 1) ] <-> [ Hyper-V internal switch 1 ]

                                                          <-> [ Hyper-V external switch ]

                                                          <-> [ Hyper-V internal switch 2 ]

The last two Hyper-V switches were created automatically recently by the VS2013 setup. Since then my VM won't ping to any network except its internal network anymore. The PC's NIC is shared with the internal switch1, to which the VM is connected to.

When the VM tries to ping an outside network, its gateway, the PC, replies with a redirect message:

'Redirect Network (New nexthop: [ IP of PC/gateway (shared network IP) ])'

I can connect the VM again by using the external Hyper-V switch for instance, but I'd like to keep the old setup. Is this possible?

Migrate Hyper v server

Hello All

Currently we have Hyper V server based on windows server 2008 R2.We are using Windows server backup to backup the host and the Guests VM s.Guest VM s  include Windows sbs 2008 , other windows 2008 R2 servers and windows  XP and windows 7 clients .

We have purchased a new physical server and planning to install windows server 2012 R2 , install the Hyper v server role and migrate all VM s from the old Hyper v server.

Our management has decided to use the  physical hard drives which are currently being used on the current Hyper v server  on the new hyper v server.

Based on the above information what would be the best method that we can take to get the migration completed? Can we use the current Hyper backup top extract data on the new hyper v server and then import the VM s onto the new server

what are the things that we need to be careful when it comes to Licensing ?

Many thanks

Hyper-V Manager in Win 7 cannot connect to Hyper-V Server 2012 R2

I can use the Hyper-V Manager in Windows 8.1 to connect my newly installed Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 - everything fine.

However, I cannot use the Hyper-V Manager in Windows 7 and Windows Vista to connect the same Server.

It just shows "Connecting to Virtual Machine Management Service ..."
Then "The operation on computer 'HYPERV' failed." - HYPERV is the computer name of the Hyper-V Server Core 2012 R2.

At the Win 7 and Vista clients, run the script [cscript hvremote.wsf /target:hyperv /show] shows everything PASS except the below warning.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 warning or error was found in the configuration. Review the
detailed output above to determine whether you need to take further action.
Summary is below.

1: You are attempting to connect to a newer version of Hyper-V.
While some remote management *may* be possible, you should use a
matching operating system version on the client for full
  management capabilities.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run the script [cscript hvremote.wsf /show] at the Win 7 and Vista clients show everything fine.

Any help?
Thanks.

Poor IO on fixed VHDX disks 2012 R2

I have a 7 node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster (failover cluster) with SCVMM.  The backend storage is a Netapp 2040-2, cluster-mode, and I'm using SMB 3.0 for my storage protocol.  The hosts each have 4 1Gb bonded NICs using LACP and TransportPorts.

When I first setup the cluster, I did some testing from the guests and found that I could write to the storage at or near the speed of the network, 4Gb/s (512MB/s).  This last week, applications started performing slowly and I found that I could now write to the storage at only about 30MB/s.

I checked the storage, network, found no problems or bottlenecks.

Finally, I created a VM directly on the hyper-v host which is has not been added as a resource to the failover cluster and was not created via SCVMM.  This VM can write to the same storage (same volume, share, spindles, etc) at almost 4Gb/s.  I can test simultaneously with any VM on any one of my 7 hyper-v hosts and it continues to have excellent IO performance and the VMs inside the cluster continue to have poor IO performance.

I have run packet traces to try to determine if anything could be wrong with the conversation between hyper-v and the storage, but found no issues.

Why does VM3 affect VM2?

$

I have 3 VM's under Hyper-V:

VM1 - SBS 2008 Premium

VM2 - 2008R2 Remote Access running RDSH providing RDWeb Access

VM3 - 2008R2 VoIP server

Today people running Windows 8 & 8.1 could not connect to OWA or RDWeb - they received messages saying ActiveX is not enabled.  During this issue the VoIP application on VM3 stopped working.  I restarted it and the ActiveX message went away. Win8 users could connect to OWA and RDWeb.

I thought their might be a problem with virtual networking and imagined using dedicated physical NICS for each VM might solve the problem, but, discovered that was already in place.

What would cause VM2 to start working allowing the Win8 users to connect after restarting VM3?
