Migrate Hyper v server

Hello All

Currently we have Hyper V server based on windows server 2008 R2.We are using Windows server backup to backup the host and the Guests VM s.Guest VM s  include Windows sbs 2008 , other windows 2008 R2 servers and windows  XP and windows 7 clients .

We have purchased a new physical server and planning to install windows server 2012 R2 , install the Hyper v server role and migrate all VM s from the old Hyper v server.

Our management has decided to use the  physical hard drives which are currently being used on the current Hyper v server  on the new hyper v server.

Based on the above information what would be the best method that we can take to get the migration completed? Can we use the current Hyper backup top extract data on the new hyper v server and then import the VM s onto the new server

what are the things that we need to be careful when it comes to Licensing ?

Many thanks

Dhanushka

Moving a replica VM to different storage location

0
0

We have 2 Hyper-V Clusters, one for the primary site and one for the DR site.

We would like to replicate VMs between the two locations.

The VMs are spread across numerous CSVs on the primary site. Some VMs have their system VHDs on one CSV and their Data VHDs on other CSVs.

We would like to replicate these VMs across to the DR site and fail back when the primary site comes back on line. I have 2 questions.

1) When we fail back to the primary site do the VHDs replicate back to their original locations or the location specified by the replica broker?

2) We don't want all the VHDs on one CSV in the DR site. To move the Replica's to a different VHD is it just a question of pausing replication, using Failover Cluster Manager to move the VHDs to a different location on the DR cluster and then resuming replication? Will further changes be replicated to the new locations?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

CSV Redirected status is not displayed in cluster MMC

0

I've seen a strange behaviour in the cluster's MMC

I have created a cluster with 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 and a HP MSA FC storage.

2 LUNs were created : one for quorum and the other for VHDX storage configured as CSV.

In order to test redirected access of CSV disk, I've unmapped the storage LUN for node 2 from within the MSA management interface (SMU).

Then :

- Node 1 is accessing fine the LUN

- Node 2 can't access it through FC

As expected node 2 didn't loose access to storage. Get-ClusterSharedVolumeState shows that the volume is "BlockRedirected" for node 2. While copying data on the CSV from node 2 I can see that the network dedicated to CSV is heavy loaded.

With the Cluster MMC, things are more complicated : the CSV status is green "OnLine" (I expected to see yellow / redirected). Right Click / Properties shows "no" for redirected access... (it is actually true!)

The only way to figure out that the disk is redirected is displaying critical events from event log for this disk.

Is it a normal behaviour ? Shouldn't the MMC display the actual status of the disk ?

Loss of network connectivity at random times to guests and now hosts Server 2012 R2 Hyper-v on Dell R620...Guests virtual disks reside on a NAS.

We have set up 2 Hyper-v environments (Server 2012 R2 fully updated) on Dell R620's. The guest machines are configured do that they reside on a NAS (also a Dell R620 with server 2012). We are having an issue on both the environments where the guests will lose network connectivity. The servers ran well for about 4 weeks and recently the guests started having issues and we have even had to reboot the host due to network connectivity problems.

We have 4 virtual switches set up. 1 connected to its own NIC. 1 for management and the 3 others for guests.

The 3 for guests are not configured to allow host OS sharing.

We do not have IP addresses on the NICS for the guests. Only on the management port. (all 1 GB NICS)

We have updated the firmware and drivers for the standard Broadcom Netxtreme cards.

We do not have Jumbo frames enabled because of some issues with switching compatability.

I've seen articles recommending to turn off TCP offloading and to disable virtual machine queues. Is this best practice?

Any thoughts of where I might look to help diagnose this issue?

Managing Hyper-V Virtual Firewall

I know that Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual switch supports configuring policies for port ACLs (see: here) but it looks to be quite overwhelming (read: PowerShell hell). Is there an easier to way to deploy or manage these settings? Anyone here have experience using any 3rd party tools to manage this?

Windows guest network performance

Hello,

We have noticed last week that several backups tasks where taking twice the time they used to take, so we checked disk and network performance and determined that network performance dropped to 200Mbps on Windows VM guests on our three node 2012 hyper-v cluster, while it used to be around 900Mbps when testing with iperf to an external linux phisical host with 1Gbps NIC, and linux VM guests (CentOS) on the same cluster are performing as usual at 900Mbps to an external physical Host.

Running iperf test between two Windows VM Guests running on the same Hyper-v Node results on 550Mpbs, the same test between two a Linux and a Windows VM's on the same hyper-v hosts shows the same bandwidth, and same test between two linux VM's performs at 1,7Gpbs average.

Integration services version on Windows guests is 6.2.9200.16384 for Win 2k3 and 6.2.9.16433 for Win 2008

We have updated Intel NIC driver on all three hyperv hosts and performance still is poor. It seems to be related to vSwitch configuration, but as I'm talking about a production environment I would like to know your opinion about this and if it could be related to a Windows update or a Integration services version problem.

2008r2 vm with multiple snap shots

hi,

i have multiple vm's and we are looking at migrating them to hyper v 2012r2.  the issue is that all of the servers have multiple snap shots.

from reading and a test i did mysel i have come to the conclusion that you cant take snap shots with you when migrating to 2012r2?  i tried the export/import.

the following saved state errors were reported.  virtual machine saved state file version is incompatible.

i then have the option to delete and save.

is there a way past this using a 4rd party tool or is it just it simply wont work due to the different systems.

thanks

VLAN Tags and Hyper-V Switches

0

Does the Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Switch support forwarding VLAN-tagged packets to a guest OS with the VLAN tags intact?  In other words, can I have a single virtual NIC handle multiple VLANs by doing the VLAN filtering inside the guest OS?

I would like to run a guest OS that sits on multiple VLANs, and while I could create and delete virtual NICs which are assigned to a single VLAN, it would be much more flexible in my environment to have Hyper-V simply forward frames with the VLAN (802.1q) tags intact so that the guest OS can see the tags and deal with them appropriately.  (looking at running a virtual router that sits across multiple VLANs).

I can't see any obvious way to do this.  I thought that leaving the VLAN tag for the guest off would cause packets to be forwarded unfiltered, but that appears to not be the case.  Does anyone know how to enable forwarding tagged frames through a virtual switch/NIC to a guest OS?

Thanks!

Unable to copy VHD

Hello,

I am running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012. I am trying to copy a VHD file to another Hyper-V host, however, the VHD will not copy. I've tried the following options:

  • Used Windows Explorer to manually copy the VHD (fails about 50% of the way)
  • Used Windows Explorer to manually copy the VHD with Hyper-V services off
  • Used Hyper-V to Export the VHD (incorrect function error)
  • Used PowerShell to copy the VHD
  • Used PowerShell to copy the VHD with Hyper-V services off
  • Used VMM to migrate the virtual machine to another host

All of these options failed, multiple times with varying but non-descriptive messages.

The virtual machine works fine on the host (turns on, functions as normal).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Poor IO on hyper-v cluster 2012 R2

I have a 7 node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster (failover cluster) with SCVMM.  The backend storage is a Netapp 2040-2, cluster-mode, and I'm using SMB 3.0 for my storage protocol.  The hosts each have 4 1Gb bonded NICs using LACP and TransportPorts.

When I first setup the cluster, I did some testing from the guests and found that I could write to the storage at or near the speed of the network, 4Gb/s (512MB/s).  This last week, applications started performing slowly and I found that I could now write to the storage at only about 30MB/s.

I checked the storage, network, found no problems or bottlenecks.

Finally, I created a VM directly on the hyper-v host which is has not been added as a resource to the failover cluster and was not created via SCVMM.  This VM can write to the same storage (same volume, share, spindles, etc) at almost 4Gb/s.  I can test simultaneously with any VM on any one of my 7 hyper-v hosts and it continues to have excellent IO performance and the VMs inside the cluster continue to have poor IO performance.

I have run packet traces to try to determine if anything could be wrong with the conversation between hyper-v and the storage, but found no issues.

Sporadic TCP packet loss on guest VMs on one server

0

I have two HP DL 380 Gen8v2 servers -- identical hardware.  Using Windows Server 2012 R2 DC.  Up to date Windows updates and HP service packs.  Both have the HyperV role enabled and are joined to a VMM 2012R2 server.  I'm using a single logical switch with two uplink ports in a team.  Host1 has no issues at all and everything works fine.  On Host2, all guests have very sporadic TCP performance -- yet the host is perfectly fine.  Sustained transfers (using iperf) go from 3Gbit down to 0 and back up again constantly.  RDP is unusable.  UDP and ICMP packets have no problem.

I've tried disabling VMQ on the NICs on Host2 even though they seem to not be causing a problem on Host1.

The NIC cards are HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLR-SFP+, configured as 2 x 10Gbit NICs.  These are rebranded Emulex cards -- not sure of the Emulex model.

There are no errors or warnings in the Windows App/System event logs.

Does anyone have a clue as to where I should look?  Has anyone seen this very odd behavior before?

Request additional allocation of dynamic memory

Hyper-V 2012 host

Server 2012 R2 guest

The guest is configured for startup and minimum memory of 2 GB with a maximum memory of 64 GB.  Once per day a PowerShell script runs which uses 7-Zip.exe to compress some large files.  The 7-Zip command fails if there is less than 10 GB of memory immediately available.  I do not want to allocate that much minimum memory to the guest, as it doesn't need it for anything but this one script.

How can I programmatically request or instruct the host to allocate 10 GB to the guest before I run the 7zip command?

Currently I am launching a PowerShell job running Sysinternals TestLimit64.exe and running it until I see the allocated memory go up on the host.  But this workaround is inelegant, inexact, imprecise, and slow.

Thank you.

Hypervisor disables Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012R2! Why? How to solve?

0
0

Hi,

according to the official documentation of Microsoft, Hyper-V does not block Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

From powercfg I get the following output:

The following sleep states are not available on this system: Standby (S1) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S3) An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Hibernate An internal system component has disabled hibernation. Hypervisor Standby (Connected) The hypervisor does not support this standby state. The system firmware does not support this standby state. Hybrid Sleep Standby (S3) is not available. Hibernation is not available. The hypervisor does not support this standby state. Fast Startup Hibernation is not available.

I already installed a graphics device driver to prevent the graphics device from blocking Sleep and Hyper-V. So this should not be an issue.

What can I do to enable Sleep and Hibernate?

Daniel

Hyper-V VSS writer ecnouter errors during taking VSS snapshot on Windows 2012 R2

When taking VSS snapshot with Hyper-V VSS writer on Windows 2012 R2, there are frequently some warning/error logs in Windows Event log. This will make the Hyper-V VSS writer goes to a bad state and in BCD, the BACKUP_METADATA is also missing for the problematic VM.

The logs in Windows Event log are as below:

In Windows Log->Application, there will be logs as:

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,

the error is likely to reoccur.

. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

My question is:

What is the cause of this problem? The event logs are not understandable at all.

RDP to VM "Internal error".

Hi.

Have a test environment on Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V.

The server have one configured NIC. 192.168.2.100

Hyper-V configured with "internal" network virtual switch. 10.10.0.1

To access my VM's on 10.10.0.0/24 I configured my router with static route 10.10.0.0/24 192.168.2.100.

Routing and Remote Access role installed on server.

Everything working fine except RDP to VM's.

When I'm trying connect to VM's from my laptop 192.168.2.5/24 GWT 192.168.2.1, I'm getting "Internal Error" on black rdp screen. And after this RDP completely stop working to VM's and physical server at the same time. The only restart of physical server is helping. When I'm trying to restart RRAS service the following Event ID's are generated:

This happens typically due to misbehaving network drivers. And so on.
