MPIO ISCSI and Hyper-V Cluster

$

I have a question regarding MPIO on Hyper-v. I know that teaming NIC's is not supported for ISCSI SAN's. So I have MPIO installed and configured for my SAN NIC's. My SAN is a Dell EqualLogic 6100. So here is the NIC configuration of my host.  I am using windows server 2012 R2.

NIC 1 - Mgmt

NIC 2  - SAN MPIO

NIC 3 - SAN MPIO

NIC 4 - Production Teamed

NIC 5 - Production Teamed

NIC 6 - Production Teamed

NIC 7 - LAB

NIC 8 - HB/LM

So the issue is when I run the cluster validation I get a warning that my SAN nics are on the same subnet which I know is not recommended.  I also need to introduce a SAN nic to my hyper-v virtual network so I can connect an ISCSI volume directly to my guest VM's.

Basically how do I handle the 2 SAN NIC's?  I would like to have the ability to have both NIC's available to my guest VM's but it does not appear that is possible.  I can't find any great documentation that is clear on the best way to set that up.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Hyper-V Server or Windows Server with Hyper-V?

We are looking at moving from XenServer to Hyper-V 2012R2.

We will be managing from VMM. (Not set up yet)

We have DataCenter licenses for the new servers.

Should we be installing Hyper-V Server (StandAlone) or Windows DataCenter Server with Hyper-V Role?

Hi,

Since we installed the new version of Data Protection Manager 2012 R2, we get issue messages while backing up Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012 R2 virtual machines.

At every backups we will find the followings in Event Viewer:

This last line is repeated for each disk.

Sometime this line is preceded by the following:

I am trying to centrally manage all my port ACLs for VM net adapters from VMM but I am not able to run the command.

I try to run the command from"Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl"SCVMM PowerShell terminal:

PS C:\Users\Administrator> Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl -VMName "Web-VM1" -Action "allow" -Direction "Outbound"

And get the following:

Checking Host and guest VM's processor, memory utilization in hyper-v

Hi,

We have a Dell Server with 12 processors and 256GB RAM.

Installed Hyper-V server 2012 R2 as the host OS and configured 10 VM's with windows server 2008 R2 and 2012 as the guest OS using Hyper-V Manager.

Everything was fine till yesterday... but few servers are running pretty slow,so checked one of the VM guest.it shows memory utilization as 80%.

How and where do I check the all the VM guest and host servers processor and memory utilization ?

I checked this blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tvoellm/archive/2009/04/23/monitoring-hyper-v-performance.aspx. In the blog, there is mention on performance counters, but I could not figure out how to monitor or get the details of those counters for review purpose. what tools should we use or need to enable any settings in the hyper-v manager .

Wanted to know ,is there anything I need to enable to monitor those and will that affect the presently running nature of VM's and Host server ?

Thanks.

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V over SMB3 on SAN infrastructure

Hi,

Can somebody provide me with a reference architecture of a Hyper-V cluster implementation over SMB3 with a SAN?
Microsoft is putting everything up to shift us to SOFS/Storage spaces but the storage vendors also have SMB3 available directly on the SAN.
An firmware upgrade of existing SAN would leverage us the same functionality, right?

Can't I directly put VMs on a SAN SMB3 share without SOFS?
The Hyper-V cluster won't use a quorum disk but a SMB3 witness share directly on the SAN. Is this going to work?
As the SMB3 share is HA via the controllers of the SAN, I don't need to use CSV's.

I don't want to add SOFS because they add another layer which causes management and latency so if it's possible without why not?
Netapp and EMC have released firmwares with SMB3 support, anybody has experience with this setup?  I found this NetApp documentation : https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1196891/html/GUID-BC313C3E-ADE2-48F6-8E88-2141BCBFD006.html.

Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine Failure

$

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Host machine.  In Hyper-V, I created a WS 2012 VM. The VM starts out OK, but after a few hours of work (configure and install SharePoint 2013), starts throwing errors (Machine had to re-boot). Eventually, the VM becomes unstable and unable to re-boot. Last attempt threw this error in Hyper-V Event Manager:

'BISP2013' has encountered a fatal error.  The guest operating system reported that it failed with the following error codes: ErrorCode0: 0x7A, ErrorCode1: 0x400207A0, ErrorCode2: 0xC0000185, ErrorCode3: 0x57BA6860, ErrorCode4: 0x40F4234.  If the problem persists, contact Product Support for the guest operating system.  (Virtual machine ID 7E140D89-25B9-4D3B-835B-7BB882C629BB)

This has happened on multiple attempts occasionally ending with Error 0Xc000021a.  Creating WS 2012 R2 VMs does not present this problem.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Since in Hyper V 2012 R2 the support for WMI 1 is removed, Hence we are migrating our applications from WMI V1 to WMI V2, Is there is any table or something which can give me WMI V2 (Classes, Method and attrib) equivalent of WMI V1 (Classes, Method and attrib).

Thanks

How to manage a Hyper-V 2012R2 Host from Windows 7?

$

AFAIK This is the official Hyper-V Manager for Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7887 it explicitly lists Hyper-V versions up to 2008R2, there is no mention of 2012 or 2012R2, and from trying to connect to my new Hyper-V 2012R2 I can confirm that it doesn't want to work.

From reading the docs on Hyper-V 2012/2012R2 remote management I've come to the conclusion that its only possible with Windows 8+ or Server 2012+ , but it cannot be used to manage Hyper-V 2008/2008R2...

Someone please tell me that this is just one big mistake on my part and that the product owner for Hyper-V at Microsoft is not this stupid...

Remote Access to Hyper V Server

$

Goodday Folks,

I have a brand new windows server 2012 Server. I setup a VM w/ win2k8r2.

for whatever reason, I cannot RDP into the VM. I'd like to gain access from other PC's inside the domain, as well as from remote locations. I can ping the virtual internal network adapter, but cannot RDP into it from within the network. I cannot ping the external virtual adapter(from within or outside of the LAN), but can RDP into the physical external adapter(both both within and outside the LAN).

Is there anything im missing?

Please advise,

thanks in advance

Hi

We have 2 Windows 2012 DC edition hyper V host servers which are configured in Failover clusters and on each nodes we have 2 Guest configured on CSVs for live migration and it's working fine. We need some test servers for a short period of times and planning to configure them on local host servers, is this a recommonded configuration?

Why are my guest VMs running in slow motion ?

Hi everyone !

Here is my setup:

2 servers (Hyper-v / Xeon E5620 / 16Go each) running in cluster. Connected to a QNAP TS-859U+ NAS thru a ProCurve 6108 with 2x1GB trunked ports.

There are 11 guest VMs all running at very poor speed. For instance it takes up to 1 hour to complete less than 10 Windows Server updates.

When I'm checking the switch or the NAS status, it appears that bandwidth usage is extremely low: I've got 1-4% usage top on both ports of the switch. And no more than 4-5Mo/s of read / write operations on the QNAP ressources monitor.

I really don't understand what's going wrong with this quite simple setup so I hope you guys can help me out !

Thanks everyone and sorry for that bad english you have to read...

How to set up domain controllers when migrating to a virtualized environment.

I converting about 25 servers in one forest with 2 domains to be Hyper-V guest vms, to be spread out across about 9 physical hosts.

I have read about the risks of relying on virtual machine DC's but I have not found a thorough discussion of best practices, regarding both the domains that the vms belong to and how to configure DCs for the physical hosts themselves.  I am looking at having the hosts on their own separate domain.

This issue must have received a lot attention -- can someone point me to a good reference, one that considers the costs and benefits of have dedicated physical machines for DCs?

Hi guys,

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Hi,

Wanting to install sbs 2011 on my mac and be able to have one be a test SBS and the other be a live SBS using VMware Fusion.

When trying to install SBS disk I receive an error message "Operating system not found"

Also, wondering which CD to install first and if this is the cause of the error message.

Any assistance is much appreciated.
