Hyper-V backup of guests - truncating the log

$

Hello

I've found a few documents about the backing up of Hyper-V guests but can anyone confirm:

Windows server 2008 running 2 VMs:

Exchange 2010
SQL 2008

What is the best practice for backup?

Run internal backups on the guest VMs, then backup the VMs from the host (windows backup/diskshadow)

I'd rather not install an agent on the guest.

Thanks

John

I have created one  cluster with one physical server and one virtual server 2008 sp2. first problem I am facing is that I am not be able to map more than one drive to virtual server because there are only two IDE controller one I use for system and one 2nd IDE controller I map one physical drive and one I map though SCSI. there is any way that I can add more IDE controller. 2nd question I am facing that I created cluster with these two server one physical and one virtual server but when I try to move the resources to virtual server then resources will not become online. Any one now about please guide me because I not good in hyper-v.

Update virtual switch for a given VM on W2012

Hi all

I'm trying to find the Powershell command to update a virtual switch for an existing VM i.e. change the virtual switch connection from "Switch1" to "Switch2" for "VM1". Ideally I'd like to do this while the VM is powered off or have the switch change applied as the VM is powering on.

It sounds like it should be easy but I've been struggling with the cmdlets in Windows 2012 to make this happen.

Hopefully, someone here can help. I'd really appreciate the guidance.

Thanks in advance

Hyper-V Failover-Cluster with CSV - Redirected Access question

$

Hello all,

Following this blog post - Troubleshooting ‘Redirected Access’ on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) which was very helpful resolving stuck "Backup in progress, Redirected access" issue, here is the question:

Quote from the article above:

"...A CSV volume showing a Redirected Access status indicates that all I/O to that volume, from the perspective of a particular node in the cluster, is being redirected over the CSV network to another node in the cluster which still has direct access to the storage supporting the CSV volume..."

When I run my backup, all four CSV in cluster enters "Backup in progress, Redirected access". Is this a bad situation?

Should I always leave at least one CSV in direct mode?

This is not very clear for me and I'd like if someone can elaborate it a little more.

Thanks,

Danny

DR & multi-site cluster with CSV and Equallogic

Hello Everybody,

I am implementing a DR with Hyper-V on Windows 2008R2 Dataceneter SP1. I use several CSVs on equallogic 2 Equallogic on siteA and 2 Equallogic on site B replicated asynchronously. My wan link between the both sites is a slow link. My hyper-v cluster has 4 nodes on sites A and 3 nodes on sites B. I use a quorum in fileshare but if I loose access to quorum the cluster realize an automatic failover from site A to site B but I don't want it because my wan link is slow.

I consider the quorum as a single point of failure and I think I will come back to 2 distinct cluster with a lot of handly intervention on VM in case of manual failover. I am searching the manner to use a multi-site cluster on my both site but preventing an automatic failover on site B in case where I loose the quorum because before doing an automatic failover I have to promote my Equallogic volumes on site B. Could someone advise me on this subject?

Thanks in advance.

PS : I don't use SCVMM.

VHD corruption issues

I am getting a very frustrating problem with with corruption on the Vm's virtual disks.  we have had numerous instances where a virtual machine has reported problems and upon restart it won't boot up until you have run windows repair tool at boot up and in some cases it hoses the Vm entirely.  We have 2 Dell R515's connected to a Netgears ReadyNAS 4200 over a 10gb fibre, so bandwitdh can't be an issue.  On the last one the host reported several iscsiprt errors and it appears to be related (ie the errors occurred between the machine being ok and the machine not being ok).  My question is Has anyone else experienced these type of issues with similar equipment?

At the moment we are in the process of installing HDD's in the server to run the VM's on DAS, bue this is by no means an ideal solution as we have invested a lot of money in this.  we would like to get this configuration running but need it to be rock solid.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Hyper-V Replica: Hyper-V failed to enable replication .. the handle is in the wrong state .. (0x00002EF3)

Hello,

i am trying to get HV Replica on 2 servers with Hyper-V Server 2012 in a workgroup, based on certificates.
All configuration works well until i actually try to activate replication for a vm. No matter which vm, which direction, what options, i always get the following errormessage:

Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'xxx': The handle is in the wrong state for the requested operation (0x00002EF3). (Virtual Machine ID ...)

I do not find any information in the net about any "handle" or it's "state" and what i can do about this.
Has anyone seen this error and knows more about it?

Hyper-V Virtual Switches and VLANs

In ESXi, I currently have two network adapters in a team.  This team connects to a virtual switch, vSwitch0.  Inside of vSwitch0, I have multiple port groups that connect a friendly name to a VLAN ID, among other settings.  These friendly names are the networks we assign the network adapter to in a virtual machine, and thus the virtual machine then operates on the VLAN that we want it to.  This also helps prevent having to memorize multiple VLANs and lessens the likelihood of human error.

Is there any way to get Hyper-V 2012 to function the same way?

Best storage practise in Hyper-V 2012

I´m building a lab enviroment of single Hyper-V stand-alone hypervisor, which will run about 10 VM servers, part of them will be converted from VMware ESXi and some will be reinstalled to 2012 servers.

Because this is a lab, I have limited amount of budged, and currently I don´t have physical RAID card, which has always affected my I/O performance in VMware. With Hyper-V, I´m thinking to set up RAID with OS´s disk management, so stand-alone´s Hyper-V will itself controll disks with it´s own Raid functions.

I will have:

1. One SATA disk for Hyper-V standalone will be installed on.
2. Two large Sata II disks mirrored which will run almost all light VM servers.
3. Two smaller Sata disks mirrored which will run SCCM server with it´s own database.

How does it sound to you and what disk type should I use?

is true we don't need SCOM anymore do to Configuring Dynamic Optimization and Power Optimization in VMM 2012

So if i want to use PRO or DO i only need to buy SCVMM 2012?

Will that allso be working if i have a Hyper-v 2008 R2 farm? or does it need to be server 2012 hyper-v version 3?

Allso it looks likes the feature is only in SCVMM 2012 SP 1 and not just SCVMM 2012? have that been released yet?

Help understanding CPU usage/resource

Hi, i cant find any god information on how to config cpu usage or why this happens. I have a hyper-v server with 2 cpus and 8 core total. One of my VMs a Windows 7 pro 64-bit is running a java application and can only use one CPU for that. But i cant get that VM to use more than 1% of CPU usage on the hyper-v server. I have tried all different settings but nothing helps. Since its not possible to go higher than 100% on Virtual Machine Limit then it should be possible to let one VM use 10-12% ( 100% / 8 core = 12,5% for each core? ) of the total CPU usage on the server, or? The relative weight dont change anything, i have tried 100, 1000 and 10000 buts its all the same.

No internet access Hyper V

Hi,

I have a Server 2008 R2 x64 machine that is DC for the local network. As soon as I add a virtual adapter/switch it kills the internet for both the VMs and the local network but not the host. The host has dual NICs lan (192.168.10.5) and the wan a static address on the broadband router's scope 192.168.1.x.

The server is a DNS, DHCP and RRAS server amongst other roles. DHCP server options for router and dns server are set to loopback and the lan address. DNS requests are set to 192.168.10.5 only.

I'm probably missing something really obvious but it beginning to do my head in. Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Graeme

p.s. I did tick the 'Allow Management Operating System.....' tick box when creating the virtual network.

Issue with network adapter not working

Hi,

I have few hyper-v hosts. I just recently converted a physical server to a VM using scvmm2012.

When I boot the VM I see everything is working but not the network adapter.

I have assigned a static ip address to the adapter, but I see there is no packet received on the adapter, no connectivity at all. (It is connected to a virtual switch and bind to same network adapter as all my other VMs that are working)

The VM OS is Windows 2008 R2.

I tried however to remove the network adapter from the VM, I added 2 other network adapters to the VM, but it doesn't show up. It's like it sees only the first network adapter and won't remove it. When I try to add the legacy network adapter the connection works , but the legacy one has only 100Mbps bandwith.

Any help please?

Thank you.

Question on HyperV Memory Usage

$

I have a machine with 48 GB Ram. I have configured HyperV on it.

I created 1 VM with fixes RAM of 12 GB. and then 6 VMs of dynamic ram starting from 4GB to 12 GB. (assuming that not all of them would be running all the time).

I started each VM and started the OS isntallation on each.

when I try to start VM no 5 it gives me error message

"Not enough memory in the sytstem to start the virutal machine."

this is how the hyperv console looks

So why am I encountering this error because the math is on my side.

12 + 16 = 28 GB

I still have 20GB un-used and there is nothing running on my base OS. So why am I not able to start VM5?

Can't ping my DNS server from Hyper-V Guest

I have installed a virtual machine in hyper-v. I added the hard drive to my domain. I can access the Internet, but I cannot ping my DNS Server which is on Server 2008. I know this has to be a setting in Hyper-V because I can ping my DNS server from other computers. I have gone into the firewall and allows ping. Any other suggestions?

Time on a hyper V VM won't stop updating

$

Hello all,

Problem:

I'm running server 2008 R2 for my hyper-v host. One of my VM's on it, also running server 2008 R2, will not stop updating its time. Currently the server is running VOIP services for a very small phone system and I'm having the VOIP company look into things on there end but they do not believe that it is their problem. The server is not apart of the domain and I can't make it part of the domain now that the phone system is up and running or so says the company I'm working with. In event viewer I get a Kernel-General ID 1 event every ... well a lot, it looks like there is some kind of a pattern to it, for example 11:54:22.37867 to 11:54:22.38100 to 11:54:57.21478 to 11:54:57.217000 to 11:55:32.47592 to 11:55:32.47800 and it continues on and on, it doesn't appear to stop ever.

Things I have tried:

I have tried turning off time synchronization in integration services with no luck. I tried to disable synchronizing with an Internet time server. I have also tried changing the server that I'm updating with. I tried changing the time frame that the time is suppose to update through the registry. That is the basics of what I have tried and what I can remember at this point.

Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

Good day everyone,

We currently have 9 servers running our network. Office 360 E1 Plan, which includes SharePoint and Email. My goal is eliminate physical server and try and utilize servers with hyper –v.
New Server:
HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Server
2 X Intel® Xeon® E5-2660 (2.20GHz/8-core/95W)
32GB PC3L-10600R 4x8GB 2Rank Memory
P420i Smart Array Controller 1Gb 4-port 331FLR Ethernet Adapter
4 X HP 300GB 6G SAS 15K
4 X HP 146GB 6G SAS 15K

This Server Will be replacing the Domain Controller and File and Print using Hyper -v. I know it’s never recommended to have anything with your domain control, but given the specifications of this server and a maximize clients of 60 users. I pretty confident it will be able to handle the load. My first question is.  What would be best for this scenario? (Would prefer to have a graphical interface but running Core versions can work too if it’s a must)

Should I break the Cores and Ram evenly into each VM or would it be better to boost more into one and the other?
Here is one Array Setup I was thinking of. Suggestions?

Raid Setup:
Array 1 – Raid 1+0 - 4 X SAS 146GB
Partition break down:
HDD0 - 60 GB for OS (Windows enterprise Server 2008 Rc2 X64)
HDD2 – 40 GB Hyper-V File(Domain controller)
HDD3 – 40 GB Hyper –V File (File and Print)
HDD4 – Remaining for Logs

Array 2 – Raid 10 – 4 X SAS 300GB ( Raid 10 for File Server)

Current infrastructure:

8 X servers - Windows 2003 R2
60 X Windows 7 bit OS client systems
65 X Email accounts (Running on Cloud services Office 365)
2 X Vlans (network and Wireless for Barscanning Devices)
1 X Firewall/router
4 X Cisco Switchs @ 100MB
Fiber Line to ISP

Servers and  Roles:
Domain Controller – (AD,DNS, DHCP and WINS) - ProLiant DL360 G5
File and Print -  ProLiant DL360 G5
App Server – Used for ERP Software – ProLiant DL360 G5
WeB/Print – Used for ERP Software - ProLiant DL360 G5
DB Server – Used for ERP Software - ProLiant DL360 G5
Monitoring System – Proliant ML 110
WDS - IBM X3650
Test Server - IBM X3650

HP Proliant ML350 G5 with WS2012 and HyperV

$

I installed WS2012 on a ML350 G5, and then installed the HyperV role.

The hypervisor and services all start up and there are no event log errors.

When I configure a VM, everything sets up properly. However, when I start the VM, the message is that the Hypervisor service is not started (it is! Or it looks like it is). The extra information indicates that the processor DEP is not enabled (it is, because HyperV would not install without this enabled).

Any other ideas? Or can anyone tell me if this system is not supported for HyperV? It used to run VMWare ESXi. And I have run HyperV (from 2008R2) on this.

Server Specs:

  • Xeon 5130
  • 12GB RAM
  • E200 RAID controller with 256MB cache + Battery
  • 6 x 146GB 10k SAS (RAID5)
