Hyper-V could not initialize (rights?)

$

Hello,

I have an WIN2012 R2 Server.
Unfortunatley it is serving as a DC (I know this is not recommended).

I set up the HYPER-V role and when I start I receive with a newly created VM (no etwork connected yet):

'TEST111' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID 49608249-F381-43E8-BCCF-F6C61CDE68A0)
Event ID 3040

Most likely it has something to do with the rights. I tried to apply this thread, but no luck:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ae8a90a2-4251-4fbd-b644-72dcd4b5f08c/error-an-attempt-to-initialize-vm-saved-state-failed-when-starting-any-vm?forum=winserverhyperv

I reinstalled the role and it still does not work. It looks like the old Settings of the hyper-v program stay on the machine after deinstalling the role, because after the reboots and Setting it up again it Shows the old Settings.

The process Monitor Shows:

HKCR\Applications\vmconnect.exe : NAME NOT FOUND Desired Access: Read.

Q:

Is there a way to completly clean the hyper-v stuff?

It might be that hyper-v only accepts local admin users (especially on a DC)?

[Hyper-V Win Server 2012] Why are network speeds for VMs lower than speeds on HOST ?

$

We have recently leased a new DELL R510 server with the following specs:

2x X5650 6-Core
192GB DDR3
12x 15k RPM Disk on H700 H/W RAID0 (redundancy, ya I know!)
Couple SSD for OS !
10 Gbps WAN Port

So we have been using Hyper-V like forever (No VMWare, nothing else)..

This time however we moved all VM's from our old Win2k8 R2 box, to this one Win Server 2012 R2 x64

All machines turned on, configured with the default network adapter (not Legacy), Disabled all sorts offloading on the HOST External virtual adapter created by Hyper-V...

We did several tests on speedtest.net @ the HOST side
We could easily hit 700 Mbps of downloading and 100 Mbps uploading...

However on the same site and location the VMs would get a result of around 220 MB/sec max and 78 MB/sec DL/UL respectively..

That is considerably lower than the HOST,

We did NOT disable offloading on the Physical network adapter (Intel X520) as we thought it is not a good idea, we only disable it on the virtual adapter created by Hyper-V (External and Internal)

Our ultimate goal is for all our VM's to reach the full potential/speed of the network the HOST is on...

What to do to resolve this issue and meet our goal ?

Thanks,

Monitoring Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Performance Data/Graphs Equivalent to XenCenter/vSphere Client

Hello,

We've just moved away from Xenserver (hooray!) to Hyper-v 2012 R2, but I must admit the best thing about xenserver was xencenter. The ability to see the real time performance of a VM and see its network utlisation/CPU/Memory was very very useful. Also the same for VMWare vsphere client.

Although Hyper-V 2012 R2 is a lot better than xenserver the realtime monitoring of VM's is awful!
We have SCVMM but that doesn't give you much either, only average CPU data..and only when it decides it will show the graph!

I've tried a few free tools, VMTurbo, Solarwinds VM Monitor (free - which doesn't support 2012 R2) plus some others...but none give us what we want.

I've seen all these other posts about monitoring reports etc which are all good and well but when you need real-time data how are people getting this? We don't want OM as we cannot afford it nor do we want the excess of managing it (not even sure if this would give us what we want).

Can anyone give me ideas of what they are using for this or what products, I feel MS have messed up a bit here, if they had these features in Hyper-v Manager/Failover Cluster Manager then it would be on a par with VMWare for sure.

Many thanks

Matt

Backup From Host or Client

I have to VMs running Windows Server 2012 R2. Should I configure the backup from the host, i.e. the host does the backup? Or should I configure the backup on the client, i.e. the VM back itself up? I guess the later might require an external drive for each VM but the former only needs one. With the host backing up the VMs I assume I can still restore individual VMs rather than having to restore all of them.

Hyper-V VSS writer ecnouter errors during taking VSS snapshot on Windows 2012 R2

When taking VSS snapshot with Hyper-V VSS writer on Windows 2012 R2, there are frequently some warning/error logs in Windows Event log. This will make the Hyper-V VSS writer goes to a bad state and in BCD, the BACKUP_METADATA is also missing for the problematic VM.

The logs in Windows Event log are as below:

In Windows Log->Application, there will be logs as:

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,

the error is likely to reoccur.

. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

Operation:

   PrepareForSnapshot Event

Context:

   Execution Context: Writer

   Writer Class Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}

   Command Line: C:\Windows\system32\vmms.exe

   Process ID: 2024

In Hyper-V-VMMS there are logs as:

In Hyper-V-Worker there are logs as:

The problematic VMs are with Windows OS, Windows 2008R2, Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1.

My question is:

What is the cause of this problem? The event logs are not understandable at all.

How should I fix this problem?

Hyper-V, IPv6 not functioning together.

Hello,

I have a Windows Server 2012 lab environment set up. In this I have one Domain Controller. Within this I am running Hyper-V. The network set-up seems to be perfect. However when I attempt to connect a virtual client to my physical domain controller it fails. The only time it doesn't fail is if I turn off IPv6 on the client machine. It doesn't matter if I turn it off on the server.

Thank you in advance,

Templates in SCVMM 2008 R2 and SCVMM 2012 R2

Hi Experts,

I have few questions regarding VM Template creation using SCVMM.
1. What is the difference between VM templates in SCVMM 2008 R2 and SCVMM 2012 R2 ?

2. I could not see the three folders (Snapshots, Virtual hard disks and Virtual Machines) of SCVMM 2008 R2 template in a template created using SCVMM 2012 R2. Only the vhd files are present in the template. What about the config.xml file?

3. Can we customize the config.xml for our VM installations?

4. Do we need to sysprep a VM or vhd file before creating a Template ? If yes, how to do it ?

Thanks,
Saleem

Linux guest does not get DHCP offer through a bridged internal switch, but Windows guests do (laptop).

I also got trouble getting networking to work on my laptop. It has one Gigabit LAN and one wireless network interface.

I cannot get my Linux guests, I tried CentOS 6.4, Ubuntu 13.10 and Debian 6, to get a DHCP offer from my DHCP server on my physical LAN. Manual configuration using static IP addresses works, but I need DHCP for my laptop.

I tried a Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit guest and the Windows Phone SDK 8.0 and both connected fine to the internet.

Here is what I tried:

With the ethernet cable disconnected I was connected to my wireless network or LAN with WPA2 personal authentication. On this physical LAN there was a DHCP server.

I created an internal Hyper-V switch and then I created a bridge between this switch and my wireless interface. I always used this switch as the single network connection for my VMs.

I am using Windows 8.1 Professional 64bit.

Why are only Linux guests affected and is there a solution? Thank you.

Access Device Manager in Hyper-V 2012

When I try accessing Hyper-V Server 2012's Device Manager via MMC I get "Make Sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and is running the "Plug and Play" and "Remote registry" services.

The Error Was: "The machine selected for remote communication is not available at this time.

I disabled the Hyper-V Firewall and followed the steps outlined here for "Allow remote access to the Plug and Play interface":
http://mikefrobbins.com/2010/12/02/enabling-remote-access-to-device-manager-on-server-core/

Any ideas?

The Hyper-V Manager works as-well-as the Policy Editor, just not Device Manager.

Problem attaching physical drive to hyper-v

I am running Hyper-V 2012 Core with several vms. I want to attach a physical drive to one of the VMs. It is a 500 GB NTFS basic, not dynamic, drive. It is not part of a RAID, though it is attached to a hot swappable RAID card. In Hyper-V I can see the drive and can cd through it's folders. I opened diskpart and selected the drive and made it offline. I ran a select disk to verify that it was offline. Then I went to our 2k8 R2 box which we use to manage our hyper-v servers and selected this server. I opened the existing VM, which is running 2k8 R2 as well, and tried to add the physical drive via settings but the option is grayed out in both IDE and SCSI, I have tried with the VM both on and off. I have tried rebooting the Hyper-V server but I still receive the same results, the dropdown to select a physical drive remains grayed out. What am I missing?

Hyper-V replication, certificate on the second nic which is on the replication network?

Hi,

I'm using Windows server 2012 R2, have servers at remote sites, replication is going fine on the primary network, however I have a replication network and would like to move the traffic there.

I have the certificate installed, but it won't resolve and show as available in the Hyper-V settings when I try to select certificates; I suspect that's because of a name resolution problem.

I.e. primary nic is hv01.hv.mydomain.local; hyper-v settings seem to default to that, and certificates that resolve to that name (*.hv.mydomain.local or hv*.hv.mydomain.local) show up.

I've added entries to dns on the replication network, and the local hosts file for Rep01.hv.mydomain.repl and I can traceroutes between the sites over the replication network.... stumped as to how to get the certificate in there?

Best regards,

Hi,

I have accidently selected server core ,instead of installing Full GUI mode while installing the server 2012 standard Operating system.

now how to enable the full gui feature ,after enabling the gui feature will the server function as a normal gui server or will there be any difference ?

if not do I need to start it from the scratch ... don't say yes ?

Thanks .

Windows Storage Server 2012 BSOD on first boot

Hi

We are currently changing all of our servers to virtual servers based on Hyper-V. Everything is running un Hyper-V 2012 R2 and all virtual machines are configured as Generation 2. We have successfully deployed Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Used for SQL-Server 2012).

But we also have a Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Workgroup which we are trying to deploy. But when installing this as a Gen2 virtual machine we get BSOD on first system boot before entering OOBE. BSOD is INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

We have tried installing Windows Storage Server as a Gen1 virtual machine. With this type of installation we got all the way to the desktop without any issues.

Is Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Workgroup not able to run as a Gen2 virtual machine with support for UEFI and Secure Boot?

We want to use Gen2 virtual machine for the Storage Server as we are trying to get identical configuration of all servers.

Problems with DNS in Hyper-V VM

I am having issues with my internet connection in my Hyper-v vm. I am following a guide from critical path to install a sharepoint 2013 dev-env on my hyper-v vm with windows server 2012 as os but something is weird. Sometimes I have internet and sometimes not (most of the time I do not have internet). I dont know anything about these issues but when I troubleshoot my internet connection it says that my dns server isn't responding. I have followed the guide and have an internal network connection and one external and the following settings for my connections:

INTERNAL:

In the Internet Protocol Version 4 Properties dialog, select the option Use the following IP address and enter the following configuration settings:
i) IP Address: 192.168.150.1
ii) Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
e) In the Internet Protocol Version 4 Properties dialog, select the option Use the following DNS Server Addresses and enter the following configuration setting:
i) Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.150.1

EXTERNAL:

i) Select the radio button option Obtain an IP Address Automatically
ii) Select the radio button option Use the following DNS server addresses.
iii) Set the Preferred DNS Server to 127.0.0.1.
iv) Set the Alternate DNS Server to 4.2.2.4.

Problem with Huge .AVHD Snapshot, best way to merge and limit downtime.

We have a production Web Server (VM) under windows 2008 R2. We just realise that we have a 450Go .AVHD and 400Go VHD file.

We need to merge the .VHD/.AVHD, but from what i know, this will be a VERY LONG Downtime.

We also have a Windows 2012 Host available. Should I copy (.VHD/.AVHD) files to the new host (2012), create a new VM and attache the (.VHD/.AVHD). Then i will be able to use Server 2012 Live Merge (without downtime) ?

What would be the best solution ?

VSS Writer wont online backup

$

We run Hyper-v on Server 2012 and have an issue with the vss writer not using online backup.

When we were running 2008R2, we had the same problem, but only with a couple of VM's, now we have gone to 2012 Hosts we have about 12 VM's that wont backup in online state.

When I list writers, it shows "Backup Using Saved State" for the VM's under Microsoft Hyper-v VSS Writer, so it would be a Hyper-v problem and not with DPM.

I have checked the Microsoft list of reasons when you cannot perform an online backup, but none of those apply.

How can I diagnose what is preventing the Hyper-v VSS Writer perform online backup?

HyperV and Failover Cluster Disjoined

$

Windows 2008 R2:

I've got an odd one where I can't seem to make heads or tails of. In my environment I have 3 servers acting in a Hyper V failover cluster. We've been having issues where when we attempt to Live Migrate a VM from one host to another, move or do storage migration the Hyper V Console reports a correct configuration but the Failover Cluster does not.

Example:  I did an export of a VM and an Import of the VM.  Hyper V Manager and SCVMM reports that the VM's storage is in the new location.  The VM is online and running.  I can remote desktop into the VM, I can ping the VM and the VM is working as expected.  However, I'm getting errors in the Event Log every hour and in the Failover Cluster Manager the VM is offline with an error.  The event log errors in the System log are as follows:

EventID:  1205 Source:  FailoverClustering

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'VMName' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

EventID:  21502 Source:  Hyper-V-High-Availability

'SCVMM VMName Configuration' failed to unregister the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service.

EventID:

EventID:  21502  Source:  Hyper V-High-Availability

'SCVMM VMName Configuration' failed to register the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service.

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to register the configuration for the virtual machine 'EEDD18D9-83C7-4D2B-B7A2-E8D88869987C' at 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume4\Virtual Machines\VMName': Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7)

Note:  The C:\ path above is the OLD path where the VM was located, not the new one.

Doing a quick Google I found that we should be restarting the Cluster Service to resolve this on one of the hosts.  However, this happens every time we do anything with the VM"s.  Live Migrate, Move Storage, etc.  Restarting the Cluster Service kind of defeats the purpose of being able to Live Migrate a VM.  Is there a better solution?

Why are my guest VMs running in slow motion ?

Hi everyone !

Here is my setup:

2 servers (Hyper-v / Xeon E5620 / 16Go each) running in cluster. Connected to a QNAP TS-859U+ NAS thru a ProCurve 6108 with 2x1GB trunked ports.

There are 11 guest VMs all running at very poor speed. For instance it takes up to 1 hour to complete less than 10 Windows Server updates.

When I'm checking the switch or the NAS status, it appears that bandwidth usage is extremely low: I've got 1-4% usage top on both ports of the switch. And no more than 4-5Mo/s of read / write operations on the QNAP ressources monitor.

I really don't understand what's going wrong with this quite simple setup so I hope you guys can help me out !

Thanks everyone and sorry for that bad english you have to read...

What's the average Virtual Machine density with RemoteFX?

$

We want to buy a new server for Hyper-V with the necessary hardware to run RemoteFx. The server we are considering is a HP BL460 G8 with a NVidia Grid K1. So we are quite interested to know how many VMs would this server be able to run on average.

We have zero experience with RemoteFx but quite a lot with Hyper-V, in a similar hardware (without the GPU) we are running around 40 VMs with no issue. But several desktops we are planning to exchange to a VDI environment needs better graphic performance for AutoCAD, Corel Draw, Photoshop, Google Earth, etc.

Would the density be similar to our non RemoteFx experience?

Thanks,

Damian.-

Managing Hyper-V Virtual Firewall

I know that Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual switch supports configuring policies for port ACLs (see: here) but it looks to be quite overwhelming (read: PowerShell hell). Is there an easier to way to deploy or manage these settings? Anyone here have experience using any 3rd party tools to manage this?
