You are in Deep schtuck.

The solution with some fiddling is as follows
regedit
navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\Properties

export it

Rightclick Properties, permissions, click through to change permissions you cannot see, click advanced, owner tab and take ownership, ok back to properties, and then click to add a permission, and all will come back.

Ok Click out and back to properties,
export it again to another file
in that folder find "Security"

Delete the value

reboot server, re-attach any disks, and hey presto it works.

Many thanks to Microsoft Sydney for their help

This error is associated with Intel Server Managment software as well, I have seen it arounf a bit on S3200SHV and S3000AH boards

Registry key is auto-recreated after deletion, causing VHD permissions corruption issue with Hyper-V

I have a Xeon server with an Intel S3200SH board. I have an issue where Hyper-V is broken by a registry key permissions issue (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\Properties).

After weeks of research I found this out by reading this TechNet article:
Virtual Machines Fail to Start, cannot add disks <failed to add device 'Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk'> <Failed to power on with Error 'General Access Denied Error'>

You'll have to Google that article title, MS won't let me post links (thanks very much).

HOWEVER, the registry key at fault keeps regenerating every time after I delete it, causing the Hyper-V issue to start over. I cannot make any progress until I can ensure this doesn't recur. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Core Mode

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to add a physical Disk (LUN pass-through) to a VM using PowerShell. Using the GUI is very easy, but sometimes we will not have access to the GUI.

The command I did:

get-disk

get-disk 2 | add-vmharddiskdrive -vmname nameofvm

This didn't work, it added the disk but did not show the Disknumber when I ran this command and it wouldn't boot. It just showed Controllertype, Controllernumber and Controllerlocation.

"get-vmharddiskdrive -vnname nameofvm"

Is there another command I need to use?

Thank you

Devon

Network Configuration

I am looking for some feed back on the following configuration for a server 2012 R2 10 Node cluster on BL465 blade chassis architecture. (No Hyper V back ground )

1 x HBA Dual Channel

6 x 1GB NICs

--------------------------------------------------------------

HBA dual channel for FC storage

6 1GB NICs distributed thus so

2 NICs teamed at the OS layer

On these two the following services reside Heart Beat, Management , Live Migration. Heart beat and management being managed by QoS so that 80 % is available to the Live migration network

On the remaining four

4 Teamed VM production network trunked at the switch for 4 GB through put.

Can any one advise if this is supported / recommended.

HyperV 2012 R2 Host with Multiple NIC Teams each in different VLAN and Subnet. Do I need multiple DGs

Hi

In my environment, I am running HyperV 2012 R2 cluster (Without VMM) with 6 hosts and all servers have 8GB NIC team for VM traffic, 400MB NIC team for Host Management, 2 GB NIC team for Live Migration and 2GB NIC teaming for Cluster traffic. I have assigned Ip addresses to the:

* Management Team (VLAN 110, Subnet 10.10.110.X /24)

*Live Migration Team (VLAN 120, Subnet 10.10.120.X /24)

* Cluster Team (VLAN 130, Subnet 10.10.130.X /24).

Each VLAN has its own gateway, So I have configured Teams with static ip address with default gateway on its VLAN. Everything is working fine. I just want to check, Do I need to assign multiple gateways when using different VLAN for LiveMigration, Cluster traffic and Management traffic. If not then where should I define the default gateway?

Thanks in advance

Kind Regards Tim (Canberra)

Hyper-V virtual machines have no access to the internet.

Getting Hyper-V virtual machines access to the internet has been driving me bonkers! Any help is much appreciated.

I have a dedicated Windows 2008 R2 device with 16 internet IP addresses from Fasthosts.co.uk and want to split this up into private virtual machines as well as virtual machines that connected directly to the internet using the internet IP addresses.

The Big Idea:

By private virtual machines I mean one device that is internet facing with internet IP addresses (Linux Firewall) that will NAT traffic to the specified virtual machines (web, mail, storage etc.)The devices I want to connect directly to the internet using internet IP addresses are for servers running Cpanel, Plesk, Zpanel etc. Such GUI’s don’t like being behind a firewall using NAT.

Where I am at:

So far I have a few test instances up and running that are able to talk to each other on an internal virtual network that uses a VLAN ID for separation. On a second virtual Switch that is set to external, these devices can also ping the internet IP address of the Virtual Switch but cannot ping the gateway (gateway as specified in the IPv4 settings of the virtual switch).

There is only one NIC connected to the internet and the Virtual switch shares the connection with the Host OS. I know this is not recommended but that is all Fasthosts are willing to give me.

I can confirm the host is able to get out on the internet and any IP addresses I add to the physical/host NIC can be pinged from the outside world.

What I thought needed to be done:

Having read many many articles on the subject I have tried lots of configurations but from what I understand it should be as simple as adding one of my assigned internet IP addresses to the vNIC on the VM?

When I have done this I have used one of the assigned internet IP address, the same subnet mask, gateway and DNS servers. These details work fine if I add them to the physical/host NIC as the sole IP.

What has been done/tried:

• Using the virtual network switch’s IP address as the gateway of the VM’s.

• Confirming Integration Services are running/installed on the VM’s.

• The physical/host NIC is shared (allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection).

• The Public/External vSwitch is not shared.

• The firewall is off for all connection types.

• Rebooted VM’s & Host millions of times after network configuration changes.

And much more that I am too embarrassed to admit I even tried.

Has anyone every work on such infrastructure or can any gurus shine a light on my problems?

Thank in advance

Oliver

Hello,

Lately we are experiencing sudden reboots on our Hyper-V servers. We've got BCs with codes 0x0000007eand 0x0000007a.

These physical servers use Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter edition.

We would appreciate if somebody could have a look to our dump file. Just let us know how to proceed in order share the file with you, please.

Thanks for your support.

Starting a VM while Backup runs...

Hi,

I just discovered that I cannot start (from stopped or saved state) a Hyper-v- VM while Windows Backup is doing his job.

Do I realy have to wait (can be long) that backup finishes? Is there another solution?

Isn't VSS supposed to help with this kind of issues?

Any help?

Thanks.

Thomas.

Knowing volume, service and other details from within the Guest OS

Hi,

I have a requirement for which, I need to know things like:

  • Is Integration Service installed on this OS?
  • Is the "Backup Service" enabled within the IS?
  • What is the VHD type? Is it encrypted?
  • etc...

All from within the Guest OS. Is there any programming API/Lib that I can use to get such information from within the Guest?

Here the guest would be one of Win Server 2008/R2, 2012/R2.

Thanks! Anand.

Reverse failover to Primary

$

Hey guys,

So I've read around but found no real concrete answer for what I'm looking for. Here is my scenario. Host1 server was a primary server running VMs. Host2 was the replica where the VMs replicated to. Host1 went down 1.5 weeks ago. C-drive was corrupt and not recoverable. Host1 has 2 drive array. 1 drive array was a RAID1 running the C drive and 2nd drive array is a RAID5 running the data drive where all the VMs are stored. I wiped the C drive and installed a fresh copy of 2012 with Hyper-V role. It does have the same name. Host2 still recognizes Host1 as the primary. Could I use reverse replication in this scenario and use the 3rd method to overwrite the 1.5 week old vhdx files? I need to return to the original setup where Host1 is the primary. Let me know if more details are necessary.

Thank you,

Copy entire virtual disk to a virtual disk with larger size

I need some assistance with copying an entire virtual hard disk to a virtual hard disk with more storage space. The current virtual hard disk (differencing disk) is almost out of space and I need to migrate it to another virtual disk (fixed size) which has more storage. All content including the operating system will need to be copied to the new disk.

Is there a way that I can do this? Please lend some advice.

Thanks in advance

Just as the title said. when I go to start a this vm in hyper-v manager, error "Unnamed VM' could not initialize." occured.

Event ID 3072 and 3040 occured.

ID 3072
'Unnamed VM' could not read or update the virtual machine configuration because access was denied: General access denied error (0x80070005). Check the security settings on the folder in which the virtual machine is stored. (Virtual machine ID 69B6E463-1F54-42FF-A160-C9247BACDF66)

Can any one help on this?

Extra OLD experimental VMs

When I was testing the system out, before I created the final production Hyper-V Exchange server, I tested with other machines.

The are no longer showing in Hyper-V manager, nor are they active.

But, the are still physically on the drive, taking up varying amount. One 11GB, one 10GB ec.

If I can delete these non-production machines, I can bring back maybe 30GB off my 1 TB of drive space, that is now down to 75GB.

Sound OK?

Can I add one standard node to my datacenter failovercluster

$

Hello,

I have 4 heavy nodes for Windows vOSes, and I want to add one more little node for linux vOSes. Then I will have more redundancy for the linux vOSes and an access to the CSV.

Is it possible (and/or supported), to add a Windows 2012 R2 standard as a node in a Failover Cluster with only Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter nodes?

Best Regards,

L.H.

Hi all,

I created one Fixed disk size with 6 GB OS drive.  Now, I need to expand it.  I did expand to 16 GB.  But, When I rebooted this VM, it shows me that 10GB is unallocated space.

So, Is there a way to expand OS drive and how?

Thank you very much!

Hyper-V Replica to DR where DR is in different VLAN and Subnets

$

Hello Dears,

There is something in my head which I am not able to understand, and I do not know how to arrange it...

My Primary Site have bellow network configurations:

VLAN ID: 200, Subnet: 10.10.10.0 /24

  • DC: 10.10.10.1 /24
  • File Server: 10.10.10.5 /24
  • SCCM Server: 10.10.10.20 /24
  • App Server: 10.10.10.30 /24
  • Hyper-V 1: 10.10.10.41/24
  • Hyper-V 2: 10.10.10.42 /24
  • Hyper-V Cluster: 10.10.10.43 /24
  • Hyper-V Broker: 10.10.10.44 /24

My DR Site have bellow network configurations:

VLAN ID: 300, Subnet: 10.30.10.0 /24

  • DC: 10.30.10.1 /24
  • Hyper-V 1: 10.30.10.41/24
  • Hyper-V 2: 10.30.10.42 /24
  • Hyper-V Cluster: 10.30.10.43 /24
  • Hyper-V Broker: 10.30.10.44 /24

I did Hyper-V replica to DR Site, and My Bellow Servers are replicated:

  • File Server: 10.10.10.5 /24
  • SCCM Server: 10.10.10.20 /24
  • App Server: 10.10.10.30 /24

I THINK once I will activate DR Site servers, they will not be able for bellow reasons:

  1. Hyper-V Virtual Switch in DR Site not same as Hyper-V Virtual Switch of Main Site
  2. VLAN tagging is different
  3. IP Addresses of Main site is not same as DR Site

let us assume I did changes the Virtual Switch manually after activating DR Server, then How IPs will work??? since DR site core switch is not configured with Main site VLANs and Subnets

can any one let me know what should I do in my case?

Thanks alot
