Server 2012 Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Services Advice

$

I have a Server 2012 Standard that I installed Hyper-V on.  I am looking at setting up 3-4 installs of Windows 8.1 for clients who work remotely.  The Server has two Nics, I setup Hyper-V to use the 2nd Nic, it will only be used for Hyper-V and the VMs that I am setting up.  Was looking at going down the Remote Desktop Services road and creating a collection of Desktops but reading through it I wonder if that is over-kill.  It sounds more like for companies that have hundreds of desktops.  Can I just setup 4 Desktops of Windows 8.1 in Hyper-V for the clients to connect to?  Any Advice on how I should do this?

WMI : MSVM_Imagemanagementservice class' mount method after mounting disk does not return the drive letter on 2012 HyperV core

I m trying to mount a vhd on windows 2012 hyperV core datacenter edition. For mounting the vhd I m using the MSVM_Imagemanagementservice class and mount method inside that. The disk is mounted but the problem is no drive letter is getting assigned. I have tried it on other 2012 datacenter edition and 2012 core as well it works fine. i.e after mount the drive letter gets assigned.

Any thoughts on this will help.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and ReFS

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to understand if Hyper-V deployment is supported on ReFS. Let's just consider Windows 2012 R2 for now. I see that even Clustered Shared Volumes can be formatted with ReFS. On those lines, I have a few questions:

- Have people started deploying Hyper-V VMs on ReFS?

- What would be the advantage of having Hyper-V VMs on ReFS?

- Any limitation that you may know of while having VMs on ReFS?

Thanks,

Ayush

Licensing 2012 Datacenter

Hello,

one of our Customers has currently four Windows Server 2008 R2 (OEM) on a ESXi Cluster. (For each host he has a 2008 R2 Enterprise License)

He already setup a new Hyper-V Cluster with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, again for each host one license.

As I understand the licensing for 2012 he can transfer/migrate the four 2008 Servers to the Hyper-V Cluster. Because of unlimeted Vose and Downgrade rights.

On the old ESXi Hosts he could install again four Servers because this licenses are now free. (Or 8 if he use each host alone, without cluster)

Another Question is about Hyper-V Replica. Is it possible (Licensing) to replicate a Virtuell Machine (Win 2012 Datacenter) from and Hyper-V Datacenter Cluster to an Windows Server 2012 Standard Server? Or must be the Replica Host also a Datacenter Version, if he wants to transfer a Datacenter virtual Machine?

Standard and Datacenter are functional the same so technically it works but licensing?

Can anyone tell me if this is correct or should I contact the Microsoft Licensing Team?

I hope my english is good enough to explain it...

Best Regards

Mathias

VM Groupings/Trees

Is there any way to group VM's in Hyper-V like you can in VMWare?

Hyper-V
  • Test
    • Test XP1
    • Test XP2
    • Test XP3
  • Production
    • Prod XP1
    • Prod XP2
  • etc

It is really annoying to have all of the VM"s shown at once.

Thanks.

Networking problem with shared nothing live migration over SMB 3.0

Hello!

My basic setup atm consists of 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 nodes, network configuration was basicly done as discribed in this video: http://www.it-cast.de/hyperv/hyper-v-unter-windows-server-2012-r2-preview-teil-4-die-livemigration/

So the 2 nodes have 4 port 1Gbit adapters and i configured ports 1 and 2 to be on different subnets and directly attached between the nodes. Here's the thing now, if i move data (shared folders) between the nodes i get fully pumped up 230MB/sec and both links are used by SMB3.0.

I also get full link usage when i move a VM in status "Shutdown". BUT if i try to move the VM in status "Running" both links get used as well, but this time there is a magic 800mbit (or maybe 1 gigabit, i dont get gigabit speed with a single link either, while live migration) barrier which i cannot overcome. (The 800mbit simply get split up evenly over the number of links)

I searched for nearly 5 days until now and i cant find the error in this setup.

(For the curious, RSS is enabled with 8 queues and as far as SMB 3.0 goes, this setup seems to be well working)

Thanks for your help in advance, i really dont know how to get any further with this problem.

Kind Regards

Rico

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hyper-V & EqualLogic

Hi All,

I am setting up my first SQL Hyper-V environment. Here is the
setup

Host:Windows 2012 R2 Data Center
7 pNIC's

2 - Teamed for Hyper-V Management
2 - Teamed for Hyper-V Virtualization
1 - iSCSI
1 - iSCSI
1 - Live Migration

SAN: EqualLogic PS6100 (Raid 50 - SAS 10K Drives)

V/M Guest:
Windows 2012 R2 with SQL
I have the vNIC connected to the network

I have created in Hyper-V - two Virtual Switches for connection to the EQL. These
vSwitches are connected to the pNICS for iSCSI on the host.

I have a volume on the EQL for the .VHDX's connected to the host. Inside resides our SQL VHDX.

I have another volume on the EQL that is for the SQL Data and Logs - I am connecting this directly to the V/M Guest via disk management.

The question I have... is this setup in a suitable way? I do not say "best" way, as
that is subjective. I do not have additional pNIC's to use for iSCSI traffic on
the guest, so I am using the iSCSI pNIC's of the host.

OR

Do I just create one big VHDX for O/S & SQL where data and logs reside as well.

Thanks!

Cluster validation test fail when creating hyper-v cluster

I have 4 identical nodes.  By identical I mean even the timing on the RAM are the same across all four nodes.  These are Proliant DL360 G6 servers which I have previously used in a clusters.  OS is Server 2008 R2 SP1 Core, drivers and firmware are all identical.  Each server has an additional fiber HBA card and quad port NIC.  Drivers and firmware is identical on each card.  System firmware is the same.  I built the server using HP smartstart 8.7 and did not install HP's network config utility since it causes issues.

All nodes are attached to an HP EVA8400, each node can see the two LUNs I am beginning with.

When I used the failover cluster manager to validate the configuration I get the following on one node:

An error occurred while executing the test.
There was an error verifying the IP configuration.
Unable to connect to Server03 via WMI. This may be due to networking issues or firewall configuration on Server03.

I can run a WMI test from another node and get a response from Server03 indicating the WMI is working properly.  For example the command to get maxclockspeed.  I have disabled the firewall on all nodes.  All networking settings are identical.  Have a management NIC, heartbeat, and livemigration NIC.  The remaining three ports are for VMs.  These are all one the same switch stack (have the heartbeat and live migration isolated).  Every address is pingable from each node.  There are no hardware firewalls.

So I try to add the machines to VMM 2012.  I add them and attempt to create a cluster and get the following error:

An error occurred while executing the test.
Invalid class

This happens on the Gathering inventory data for servers running Hyper-V portion.  And it bombs out.  I tried again removed the troubled Server03 and just using Server01 and Server02.  Same error.

When using the failover manager all other tests pass.

I built a hyper-v cluster when R2 first came out and I swear I did not have this much trouble.  I can't use 2012 because our EVA won't support it so I have to figure this out.

Hyper-V Harddrive Array Questions

$

Hi All,

I have a HP ML350P Gen8 server to upgrade and would like an opinion on the best way to configure the storage array. I am picking up from some else's start/mistakes so some of it may not be the best.

Current Setup:

HP ML350P

2x Xeon E5-2609 2.4Ghz

24GB Ram (2x8 2x4)

P420i 512MB with 3x 1TB Sata 7.2K in Raid 5 = 2TB Raid 5

Server 2012 Datacenter Edition.

4x Hyper-V VM's

DC - 19GB VHDX (127GB Limit) - DC and Shadow Protect.

File - 23GB VHDX (127GB Limit) and 500GB VHD - High Priority File Store and Shadow Protect. Industry DB stored Here. Shadow Protect.

Mail - 41GB VHDX (127GB Limit) and 500GB VHD - Exchange Only and Shadow Protect.

Remote - 31GB VHDX (127GB Limit) - Office 2010, User Access, Industry App Front End and Shadow Protect.

Currently they have approx 40 users with about 15 concurrent users. They would like to increase this to as much as 45 concurrent and 120 users in total.

I am currently testing their industry application for Ram usage per person. The application is a private DB backed application but has a similar IO load to SQL.

I would like to;

Upgrade Ram to something like 64GB (may be less once the figures are ready)

Change to SAS HDD's with either 1 array pool or as many needed.

Convert all VHDX to VHD

Tune the Hyper-V settings as currently the CPU is about 5% at even the busy periods with the current CPU allocations. Also Ram is way under utilized in the current config.

Can you guys please recommend the array setup you would look to use?

-2x 146GB 15K Raid-1 for Host and a Raid-10 for VM storage?

-Separate Arrays for each VM? (this would prob limit us to mirror sets)

-1 big Raid-10 pool with host and VM's?

Please let me know if I am missing any info.

Thank you.

SBS to VM 2012 R2 migration

$

Hi all

I am after a little bit of advice and help.

I have an existing SBS 2008 HP server and I have just received my MAPS software. As I now need to upgrade to the latest versions of the MAPS software I am looking to virtualise my servers (1 SBS and 1 2008 R2) onto a single Hyper-V server. I would like to keep my Exchange in house for the time being so I am looking to use the following VM's:

1x Windows 2012 R2 as DC

1x Windows 2012 R2 as Exchange server (with VOIP software)

First question is should I install the full version of Windows 2012 R2 and add the Hyper-V role to it or just download and install the Hyper-V server? Is there any difference in the software?

Second question is what is the best way to virtualise going from SBS 2008? would you suggest giving the DHCP and DNS roles to the physical server or apply them on the virtualised DC? I noticed that the Hyper-V settings ask for DHCP and DNS server details and this would seem to be an issue if the DHCP and DNS servers are actually VM's running on the Hyper-V server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am very new to Hyper-V

Gareth

NIC Teaming - Virtual Switches

Hi,

Would I be correct in saying you would need more than one NIC if you wanted to bind to a created virtual switch (external-on host) as well as the actual server (host)?

Thanks

Terrible disk performance inside VM

$

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 with a VM running in Hyper-V. Prior to this host being 2012 R2, it was 2008 R2 but this problem existed then, too. I wiped 08 R2 and installed 2012 R2.

We have awful performance from within the virtual machine in Hyper-V.

Below are two screenshots that demonstrates what performance monitor displays from within the VM.

It will write, it will stop, it will resume.

Its VHD files are stored on a ReadyNAS 4220X connected by iSCSI. We are unable to upgrade to VHDX because it is one half of a DAG and you cannot have mixed VHD/VHDX. There is another VM still powered off that has the same problem and it has been converted to VHDX.

I have tried a number of different configurations:

Multiple NICs connected with MCS to bonded NICs (LACP) on the ReadyNAS. (192.168.13.x)
Standalone NIC connected to bonded NICs on the ReadyNAS. (192.168.13.X)
Standalone NIC connected to the same bonded ReadyNAS NICs. (10.1.1.X)
Standalone NIC connected to the standalone NIC on the ReadyNAS. (10.1.1.X)

The 192.168.13.X network is dedicated to iSCSI traffic and the 10.1.1.X is our production LAN through a different physical switch, just to illustrate that I have attempted different ways of pinning down the problem.

If I copy directly to the iSCSI target from the host machine, transfer is normal. If I copy from another machine on the network from within the problem VM, the transfer itself is fast but when it goes to write to the drive, we will see the terrible performance issue.

The RAID volume on the ReadyNAS is completely dedicated to this VM at this point. There is nothing else running on it. I have disabled the checksumming on the volume that can sometimes cause issues and have disabled TCP offloading as suggested in all documents detailing fixes for poor iSCSI performance. The machine is fully patched and, as I said at the beginning, this issue existed in both Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012 R2. The host machine is a Dell PowerEdge R610.

Procedures for inplace upgrade

Hi,

I am going to upgrade my Server 2012 Host with two VMs (DC and FS) to Server 2012 R2 soon.

Should I stop VM Services or Shut Down VMs before starting upgrade or it doesn’t matter at all?

Thank you in advance,

Alex

Hi all,

I have 11 Windows Server 2008 R2 standard with SP1 VMs sitting on 2 Win Serv 2008 physical servers that keep crashing randomly, nothing on the events logs that can help.

The reboot happen very randomly but always around 12:30AM, I checked the logs on the physical server but couldn't find anything.

Any idea ?

Thanks
