Importing Hyper-V VM to Windows 8.1 Hyper-V from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Export gives error

Hi,

On Windows 8.1 Preview with running Hyper-V I can't import any more exported VM's from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V export. It worked great on Windows 8. Of course I manage to use just VHD, and everything is working, but this is additional step, first to create VM.

Is it a Windows 8.1 Preview bug or expected behavior?

Best regards,

Zvonimir

Replication with certificates

Hello!

I'm trying to set up vm replication using certificates: I can successfully publish CRLs to the file share but Hyper-V says it can't validate the certificate:

The certificate I'm using on the host PC is correct:

c:\certutil -store my

my "Personal"

CertUtil: -store command completed successfully.

I'd like to crarify the following: do the words "revocation server was offline" mean that Host3 can't access the file share with CRLs (\\host1\crl) or the CA server itself (dc2.test2.local)? As far as I understand the revocation means accessing CRLs at any place specified in the certificate, NOT on the CA itself...

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Hi,

I have query regarding Live Migration in Windows Servers Version. Can i configure Live Migration in Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2008 Hyper-V Core and in Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 and 2012 Hyper-V Core without Failover Cluster and Clustered Shared Solution.

I have gone through the Microsoft Website but i am confused whether the Live Migration required Failover Cluster and Clustered Shared Volume or Not.

Note:- I only wants to configure Live Migration not High Availability(HA).

Please revert if any more queries.

Hyper-V Replication in Workgroups

We have two Windows 2012 hosts set up as workgroup machines.  One of the guests is a domain controller.

There is a document at

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29016

that suggests it is possible to replicate virtual machines between workgroup hosts.  However, I'm not able to do this on the RTM Windows 2012.  I get an error saying "Hyper-V failed to establish a connection with the Replica server'.

Just before I book a support call could I ask if anyone has successfully replicated using the RTM 2012 between two workgroup servers?

Many thanks.

Port Issue in Windows Server 2012

Hi,

I'm setting up a windows server 2012 hyper v environment. I have a win 2012 standard server and have installed hyper v role. Have set up a Ubuntu 12.04 server and installed IBM WebShpere on the Ubuntu machine as a virtual machine. IBM WebShpere requires ports 9060, 9080 etc to be open. I'm able to access the IBM web console from the Ubuntu system and from windows server host machine. But When I try to access the IBM console from an external machine on the same network get error. I'm not able to telnet the UBUNTU server and windows server on port 9060 from external machine.. I have enabled rule on win server firewall to allow connection, restarted the firewall service but still cannot telnet on port 9060. How do I make this port to listen on windows server 2012 as this is required by IBM WebShpere installed on the hyper v.

Poor network performance on Windows 8.1 virtual machines

We experience a strange behavior. A 10 node Hyper-V host cluster. Dell Blades. Broadcom NIC's.

When we do a file copy from or to a VM hosted on the cluster and running Windows 8.1 the throughput is terrible0-3 Mb/s. When we do exact the same on a Windows 7 VM, the throughput is500MB/s. (Yes MegaBytes!). I've read through all sorts of documentation about VMQ (Virtual Machine Queue) and have confirmed thatthis feature is disabled on the network interfaces. Next step is to update the hyper-v host NIC drivers with the latest release from Broadcom.

The thing is I cannot explain why this is slow on Windows 8.1 and fast on Windows 7 (or server 2012). Has someone come across this issue. Any advice would be appreciated.

Live migration of VM from CSV storage -> local storage

I have a VM I want to migrate from our CSV storage onto local storage. However, I can't find a way to complete this.

Live migration won't give me the local disks as an acceptable destination.
During this live migration even if I say that I don't want it to be highly available, the next part to the wizard doesn't give me any options whatsoever to move it anywhere.
I've tried moving it via the Hyper-V manager - which then directs me to the Failover Cluster Manager. Even there I can't give it a suitable destination on the local disk to stick the machine.

What am I missing in this?
Is there a way to do this without manually copying the VHDs to that location and creating a new VM?

Running desktop OS VMs in corporate Hyper-V?

0
0

Hello All,

The company I work for currently has a number of server-OS virtual machines running on Hyper-V.

We also have a number of server-OS virtual machines in VMWare on ESX.

We are now facing a situation where other teams in our area have virtual machines, like a VM of the Desktop Support Windows 7 environment, where we could potential migrate those into our Hyper-V or ESX environment.  Currently these VMs run locally on laptops running VMWare Player.

Does anyone know of any technical issues that would prevent administrators from migrating desktop-OS VMs into a corporate VM solution?  As far as I can see, it would only be advantageous for the people using these VMs - better snapshot ability, leveraging the better performance of an enterprise-class VM hosting solution.

Newbie Questions

Can I run a windows OS such as windows 7 or windows 8 off a hyper-v server, as a desktop. I would like to deploy windows desktops to different locations at home.

Also, if there is hardware connected physically to the server, is that hardware accessible to all the instances of the windows desktops - I am thinking webcams and speakers.  If I had as example 4 desktop instances running, would all 4 be able to access a single webcam physically connected to the server and would all 4 have the sound outputted to speakers physically connected to the server?

Hyper-V Manager - Access Denied

0

I have a Hyper-V Server Core 2012 in a workgroup environment and uses Hyper-V Manager in Windows 8.1 to manage my Hyper-V server.  It was working previously and when I try to connect to it today (it has been a month or two since I last connected to the server using Hyper-V Manager), I got the following error message within Hyper-V Manager: "Access Denied.  Unable to establish communication between '<server name>' and '<win8 computer name>'.

I had the same problem when I set it up initially but was able to get it to work by changing the access permission using DCOMCNFG.

What I also realized is when I right click on the Server node on the left pane, the Hyper-V Settings and Inspect Disk option seem to work.

Does anyone has the same issue and had a solution?

Thanks!

Hyper-V and Domain Controllers, 1 DC and 1 RODC?

Hello,

I have a small domain of about 20 users running on SBS2011, which is also running Exchange, and plan on virtualizing the existing infrascructure. We only have 1 DC, which will soon be running on Hyper-V and I plan on deploying a second physical one to prevent the single point of failure. Since this is also running Exchange I have to P2V the main DC. Since I will only have 2 DCs, if I set the second one up as a RODC on physical hardware will that help to avoid alot of the problems (specifically during the P2V process and the other Hyper-V gotchas) that cause USN rollback?

Prevent creation child object SPC "windows virtual machine"

The creation of the SPC "Windows Virtual Machine" is causing problems for AD operations.  Computers with this child SPC object cannot be deleted using automated scripts and this is causing workflow problems where we are using Hyper-V to stage sample client OS computers.

Is there a way to prevent or stop Hyper-V from making that SPC object for client OSes?  I would like to make it so that the Client OSes on a particular Hyper-V host do not create extra SPC objects in AD.  This way I don't have to re-write all my scripts and services that Delete computer accounts from AD.  When computer objects have child objects, I think they become containers in the eyes of AD and so cannot be deleted using AD calls that work fine on computer objects that do not have children.

Hyper-V Configuration Questions (hard drives, partitions, etc)

0

Hey guys, this is probably a general question but I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about optimizing Hyper-V performance with the setup I have. This is in no way an enterprise environment type of thing, I am running a standalone server at home.

Anyhow, everything is up and running now ok but I'm sure it's not optimal... here is my setup:

Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V
8-core processor
32GB RAM 1866mhz
Hard Drive 1 - SSD 100GB
Hard Drive 2 & 3 - 1TB each in a hardware RAID 0

I have 8 VM's running now on the RAID drives and my OS (C:\) is on the SSD. The VMs are all Windows 7 Pro machines and 1 of them has SQL Server running on it.  What I did was made my RAID drives the D:\ partition and in there is the Hyper-V folder which houses all the vhdx files and stuff. Snapshots and server backups go to an external USB 3.0 drive connected to the server.

Question is (and I don't mind purchasing extra SSD's or Hard Disks if I have to) but should I configure any of this different? Should I have all my VM vhdx files in their own separate directories on different drives or anything like that?  Just looking for a straight forward optimal way of utilizing what I have to it's full potential. I can change RAID too if need be.

Thanks.

Hyper-V 2012 High Availability using Windows Server 2012 File Server Storage

Hi Guys,

Need your expertise regarding hyper-v high availability. We setup 2 hyper-v 2012 host in our infra for our domain consolidation project. Unfortunately, we don't have hardware storage that is said to be a requirement that we can use to create a failover cluster for hyper-v host to implement HA. Here's the setup:

Host1

HP Proliant L380 G7
Windows Server 2012 Std
Hyper-V role, Failover Cluster Manager and File and Storage Services installed

Host2

Dell PowerEdge 2950
Windows Server 2012 Std
Hyper-V role, Failover Cluster Manager and File and Storage Services installed

Storage
Dell PowerEdge 6800
Windows Server 2012 Std
File and Storage Services installed

I'm able to configure the new feature about Shared Nothing Live Migration - i'm able to move VM's back and fort between my hosts without storage. But this is planned and proactive approach. My concern is to have my hyper-v host to become highly available in the event of system failure. If my host1 dies, the VMs should go/move to host2 and vice versa. In setting this up, i believe i need to enable the failover clustering between my hyper-v hosts which i already did but upon validation, it says "No disks were found on which to perform cluster validation tests." Is it possible to cluster it using just a regular windows file server? I've read about SMB 3.0 and i've configured it as well i'm able to save VMs on my file server, but i don't think that my hyper-v hosts are already highly available.

Any feedback and suggestions or recommendation is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

P-2-V HyperV 2012 R2

Not sure if this is a VMM 2012 R2 or Hyper V 2012 R2 post but here goes.

We want to P-2-V a number of servers to a new Hyper V 2012 R2 Cluster (with VMM 2012 R2 looking after it all). We all know that Microsoft (in their wisdom) have removed the P-2-V feature in the R2 version of VMM (well done! - not). Their official workaround is to use the 2012 version and then migrate that to 2012 R2! But VMM 2012 will only 'talk' to Hyper V 2012, so you have to create a whole environment to do this! Mad...

Has anyone dealt with this in their environment? Does anyone have any recommendations for inexpensive tools to achieve this? I should say that this needs to be completed in live environment so that we can then just flick over from the physical source to the virtual 'clone' one evening with no real downtime.

Thanks for any feedback.

Integration Services Version Mismatch

I am running Windows Server 2012R2 and trying to create a VM Running Windows Server 2012.  The Setup hangs during install with Event logs indicating repeated attempts to access files. The WS 2012R2 Event Log throws up the following Warning:  Storage Device has a different version from the server. Server version 6.0 Client version 5.1.  Then offers this resolution: To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu. This option is unavailable for a VM that is turned off.  I have No problems building VMs running WS 2012R2.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V - access network

0
0

I installed WS 2012 H-V on a desktop machine. The machine is new and known to work.

I installed the WS 2012 H-V bare metal - new disk, etc. The intent is to make a project development workstation running systems we support and are upgrading.

During the install I configured the network with a static IP, DHCP, Gateway etc. using the CLI. They are known to be correct.

ipconfig reports the settings as expected.

A view of the wired interface shows the connection is active.

From the command line I cannot ping anything on the LAN let alone the Internet. I cannot access the server from any other machine on the network.

What did I miss?

Any help will be gratefully accepted.

Mike
