Network activity on Livemigration/Cluster networks during SQLIO test

0
0

Quick overview of our environment:

2012 R2 Hyper-V host:

- separate VLANs for: Management/VM Access, iSCSI, LiveMigration, Cluster (CSV/Heartbeat)

- NIC teams: Management, VM Access, LiveMigration, CSV/Heartbeat

- Virtual Switches: 1 (tied to VM Access NIC team)

SQL 2012 cluster deployed as VM guests

- SQL databases are on shared VHDXs (VHDXs reside in c:\ClusterStorage on the VM host cluster)

When we run SQLIO to test performance, the Hyper-V hosts show traffic on the LiveMigration and Cluster NIC teams. The traffic picks up when we start the tests, and ends as soon as the SQLIO test stops. Without a doubt, it is being caused by SQLIO.

Does anyone have any insight as to why these networks are showing activity during the SQLIO tests?

Hi Forum

I am looking for a Tool/script that can give me the following information

VMhost, VMname, MaxDynamicMemory, MaxStaticMemroy, CPUcount, All disk and their max size.

So if you are familiar with a script or a Tool, i would be great.

Environment is: SSVMM2008r2 + Windows Server 2008 R2

How to Diagnose Heartbeat No Contact?

0
0

I have about ten virtual machines running on Hyper-V/Server 2012.  One of my machines is showing Heartbeat:  No Contact.  I have no idea how to trouble-shoot that.  Can anyone help?

The same machine is losing time -- an hour or more per day.  I don't know if that is related.

Thanks.

Active Directory-based VM connection. (Jail 1 user to same VM everytime without IP/HostName)

Greetings, fellow techies!!

I come to you with what may seem as an odd request.

My firm is considering building a thin-client solution for certain clients. We (I) normally operate with ESXi and other VMWare-related solutions.  However, we have decided to go via Hyper-V Server 2012 (Core, not Windows Server with a Role) for this particular scenario. So, enough chatter.

Can anyone please inform me how or even if this can be done?: I would like to use the Hyper-V server as a "pointer" to VMs depending on what username is given. For example: On my thin-client, I would only specify the Hyper-V server. At that point, I want to enter Windows Domain credentials. Depending on what I enter as username, I want it to go to a certain VM.

Let's say I have 5 VMs in Hyper-V (Hyper-V IP is 192.168.1.200). One of their HostName is Tommy-PC, and its IP is 192.168.1.201. Now when the user boots their thin client, which is pointing to the Hyper-V at 192.168.1.200, he would type his username and password and it will automatically send him to HostPC "Tommy-PC(192.168.1.201)" without ever typing in or storing the IP or HostName. In a sense it would be ActiveDirectory/User-based connection, where the destination is pre-defined somewhere. Where is that somewhere?! :)

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Really, anything that will help me make Hyper-V as a HUB of sorts, rather than using RDP with direct IP's/hostnames to the hosts. We want as little user-error-margin as possible; so doing this as a pre-defined rule seems the best route.

*Update*Theory. Just remembered the Personal Virtual Desktop... Or rather I saw it in the AD and remembered haha. So I think if I make the DC into an RDS host or the Hyper-V, via the Remote Desktop Connection Manager, I should be able to point. Let's see!

Error exporting Hyper-V VM

I am running 2 VMs in Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. But am running out of space on the partition where the VMs were created. I have another larger partition on the same Hyper-V server and want to move the VMs to this larger partition.

I was able to successfully export one of the VMs to the larger partion and import it succesfully. The process ran perfectly.

However when I try to export the second VM the following error is is generated...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An error occured while attempting to export the virtual machine.
Export filed for virtual machine 'SALVO'.
Export failed for virtual machine 'SALVO'
(41322DFC-B316-4CF8-9B19-7753078F0D4B) with error 'The system cannot find the file specified.' (0x80070002).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What can I do to resolve this error. The VM is functioning fine. I don't understand why I am not able to export it. At one point in time I did have a second vhd attached to the system. But I removed it long ago and there were no observable side effects.

Thanks, David

Installing Windows Driver Framework.

I've just bought a couple of new servers running Windows 2012, I'm stuck trying to shift a guest Hyper V machine from our old Windows 2008 server.  I can copy the machine over OK, but I cannot get the updated Hyper-V integration services installed.  On running the new integration services, it throws up a dialogue and I can see it updates the HAL, but then seems to be stuck in a loop saying "Installing Windows Driver Framework".  The guest O/S is SBS2008.  I have established that this isn't just a 2012 issue for me, as see the exact same issue if I shift the guest to a spare Windows 2008 R2 system (running Enterprise).  The source system where the guest is running quite happily and has done for 3 years is 2008 R2 standard.

Worth adding that I also seem unable to add a legacy network adapter, and the guest server is bang up to date with regard to windows updates.

This has stopped my migration dead in its tracks and also given me big doubts over our backup strategy.  Can anyone give me any pointers here please?

Replication with certificates

Hello!

I'm trying to set up vm replication using certificates: I can successfully publish CRLs to the file share but Hyper-V says it can't validate the certificate:

The certificate I'm using on the host PC is correct:

I'd like to crarify the following: do the words "revocation server was offline" mean that Host3 can't access the file share with CRLs (\\host1\crl) or the CA server itself (dc2.test2.local)? As far as I understand the revocation means accessing CRLs at any place specified in the certificate, NOT on the CA itself...

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Can someone tell me if windows 8.1 is a supported guest OS on hyper-v 2008 r2? So far i have only found references to windows 8 but not 8.1

Any feedback is appreciated.

From VM cannot ping host or gateway

Hi all,

I have installed Hyper-V 2012 R2 core of a brand new Dell Poweredge R720 server in core mode, no GUI.

Then a VM with Windows 2012 R2 VM with GUi has been created with Hyper-V manager, no problems there.

I used the Virtual Switch Manager to create a Virtual LAN adapter and selected the network card as an external type because I want to share the Hyper-V host network card.

I start the virtual machine, go into network connections, configure a static IP is the same subnet as the Hyper-V host, default gateway, DNS server etc.

When I try to ping the Hyper-V host or the router's default gateway, I get that it is unreachable.

If I try to ping the VM from the host same thing, unreachable.

I made sure to disable the Firewall in the Hyper-V host as well as the Virtual Machine for testing purposes.

What is the problem here?

I read somewhere on google that although the hyper-v host network config may appear fine, it might be messed up.

Also if you have more than 1 physical network adapter how to I select the correct index for the NIC in Hyperv manager Virtual switch manager?

Any responses will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards

Alfred

High Availability

Hi,

Here is the scenario, 2 Physical hosts running hyper-v hypervisor would have 4 VM's each with application like DC, File, Print and utility servers. We would like to have High Availability within this VM's so that when one server goes down the other one has to come up (say if File server goes down on 1st host , file server on other host should come up with full functionality).

Can we implement this with Hyper-V ,if yes could you please provide me with some explanation and how to do it.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hardware Sizing for Medium Sized deployments

Hi Experts,

I'm having good experience in VMware and also aware of Hyper-V. I'm supposed to do design and build infrastructure based on Hyper-V 2012. In VMware we can expect 8-10 vCPUs per core (In actual workloads recommended is 1:4 ratio).

My requirement is to select hardwares (CPU, Memory and Network) for Hyper-V hosts in Highly available clusters. I was wondering if there is some basic rule/idea for resources provisioning in Hyper-V with some infra design.

Waiting for response.

Linux memory ballooning problem

Hi all, my customer has a MS HyperV 2012 (not R2) cluster for virtualization purposes.  Stumbled in dynamic memory allocation I just had a try, reading around about supported configurations etc. As per what i understand, for a 2012 environment the only concern is to set identical startup and maximum ram values.
Once the vm is booted, after a while, the ram amount start to decrease, meanwhyle in terminal some "out of memory kill process" starts and the amount returns into the original max value.
Any idea or experience about that scenario? The RHEL release is 6.4, integration services embedded.

Tanks in advance.

Remove Media from previous Checkpoint/Snapshot without Reverting

Hi:

We have a VM in Hyper-V that has several Checkpoints.  The first two checkpoints were created when an ISO was mounted and therefore thinks the file should reside on the LUN that it was on at that time.  However, since then, this VM Storage was moved and the original location no longer exists.  I tried to clone this VM and I get an error about the ISO not existing in the original location and failed.

How can I remove this from a checkpoint/snapshot without reverting back?

I tried removing the path from the XML "Snapshots" but I get an error about the file being in use by another program.

Help!

Thank you,

Stangride

USB Drive in Hyper-V Not Seen

Native hyper-v on server 2012. When i plug in a usb drive, the guest vm does not see the drive. How does one get the usb drive seen on server 2012 guest os?
Diskpart does not see the usb drive either
Nor does computer management

Also, guest os does not see any DVD put into the dvd drive. The core install sees anything in the usb and dvd....

Installation of Hyper-V 2012 server on sun fire X2200 M2

Hi All.,

I have a Sun fire X2200 M2 blade server with 16 GB RAM, 2 Quad core processors and 1 TB HDD. Now, i am using ESXI 4.0 as a host platform. but, my esxi 4.0 is going to expire. I am planning to procure a licensed Hyper-v 2012 server as a host platform of my Sun fire X2200 M2 server.

Any one please help me my Sun fire X2200 M2 server will support Hyper-V 2012 server as a host platform or not.

If it supports please share me the documents available to install Hyper-V 2012 server.

Thank You..

Standard Server 2012R2 RTM Hyper-V using Gen2 VM fails to load ISO image.

Hi Microsoft SW Engineers,

First, 2012R2 is awesome!!!... However using Standard Server 2012RTM, I can create a Hyper-V guest VM and load Server 2012RTM into from either the captured DVD using IDE or ISO file image when I use a Gen 1 VM. Shifting over to use a Gen 2 VM, IDE driver is no longer supported and is not available to use using Gen 2 (this is a good thing), only the SCSI driver is available. Using the SCSI, I can not install the Server 2012 RTM OS  into a Gen 2 VM using the same dvd or iso image that works using Gen 1 & IDE-DVD. SO....Only Microsoft can fix this bug of not being able to use Gen 2 VM & SCSI driver to load a ISO image...MICROSOFT can you hear us? I want to use Gen 2 VM but I can not because of some bug(s) you have in this SCSI driver-Gen 2 VM configuration....FIX THIS WITH A PATCH PLEASE!!!! Steven Sutherland, North Charleston, SC.

Hyper-V 2012 Replica reverse replication error

0

Hi  Everyone --

I have two 2012 standard servers running hyper-v. The are both part of the same domain. I have one VM that I'm testing Replica on, and I always get the same error message.

Here's my test: the primary server has the VM running and it's working well. I then cut the power to the Primary server, and then go to the replica server, and perform a fail over. I works well, and the VM comes up.

When I bring the primary server back online, and try to complete the reverse replication, it fails every time and give me the following error:

"Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the Replica server for virtual machine..."

I can of course disable replication on the primary server, and then initiate the replication again, but then it seems to defeat the purpose of having this feature.

I'm wondering if this is expected behavior and/or something I can avoid.

Thanks

Virtual Switch adapter getting link-local IP address (apipa)

Hi Everyone,

Not sure what I am doing wrong here.

I have installed an Hyper-V 2012 R2 core server on a brand new Dell server.

I then went to use Virtual Switch Manager via Hyper-V Manager to create a virtual switch adapter, selected external (I want to share my existing server NIC), allow management operating system to share this network adapter.

Then I configured my virtual machine to use this.

When I start the virtual machine I get a 169 type IP address, cannot ping gateway or host. The VM does not even get a proper IP using DHCP. DHCP is working fine from another physical server.

When I check the hyperv core host and select 8 for  "Network Settings", I get:

15    192.168.20.44   Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet #5
22    169.254.101.167 Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter #2

Why is hyperv creating a virtual adapter with an Apipa address which is not usable?

I followed all the steps correctly, but it does not work.

Can anyone point me into the right direction to solve this problem?

Thanks and regards

One NIC host - can I connect VMs to the Internet?

0

Hello everybody,

probably you've seen this before, but I haven't had any success in finding the right answer.

Question is, can I connect the VMs, living on a host with a single physical NIC, to the Internet?

I need to set up 3 VMs (same LAN) to connect to the Internet through the host, but the host has only one physical NIC.

Is it possible?
