HyperV 2012 R2, cannot connect to virtual machine

Hi there!
i've 1 week, that could not connect from my Windows 8, to virtual machines that are running in physical server, with OS, Free HyperV 2012 R2 (as in picture).

What could be the problem for this?

I've firewall off, i've restart my Windows 8, but nothing is changed.
Previosly, i was run very good, from 60 days already.

I tried also, from another server, that has WIndows 2012 (but not R2), and the same problem.

DirectAccess Hyper-V Manager RPC Server Unavailable Server 2012

I have a windows 8 enterprise client connected remotely via DirectAccess (server 2012) to a hyper-v server running server 2012.  Both are a member of the domain and when the windows 8 client is on the local LAN, hyper-v management works just as it should.  I can't figure out what is needed to be able to manage virtual machines in Hyper-V manager.  I keep getting RPC server unavailable, unable to establish communication between hyper-v server and my da client. I have also ran the hvremote tool and which didn't seem to do anything, until a bit later I noticed that I shouldn't since the version isn't supported yet for 2012.  I also found an article aboutEnabling Hyper-V Management through DirectAccess but that article doesn't seem to work or be for server 2012.

Anyone have any ideas?  If its all just client firewall settings I would like to just make a GP for the firewall exceptions so that any other client I want to work I don't have to mess with anything client side.

Thanks!

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

0

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

VHD merging with large snapshots - export or merge?

Hi

We have a VHD (dynamic size) that is about 200GB and a snapshot avhd which is about 500GB. This has gone unnoticed for a long time.

We need to merge the two so that we can expand the VHD.

Is there a rule for how much space is needed to merge the data?

Would it be better (faster, less disk space requirement) to export the VHD out, remove the current vhd and avhd and then import the exported copy?

Our server is HyperV core 2008.

No Hyperv Virtuals get DHCP address - but Physical Host Can

HyperV Server 2012 Core on a dedicated machine on local domain.

Machine connected directly into local network that has a DC running DHCP.

None of the VM's can get a DHCP Address from the server. Even if i set static addresses still they cannot route anywhere, cannot even ping the HyperV server they are sat on but other local machines can!!!!

The physical host cant ping the

The physical HyperV server has no problem getting a DHCP address or any routing issues, nor do any of the other clients on the local network, including another HyperV server running server VM's

What ive tried so far

  • Deleted Virtual Switch and removed the NIC from the virtual hosts in HyperV Manager- then re-adding new one.
  • Put in a different network card
  • Removed Physical host from Domain, renamed machine to different name and re-joined
  • Used different IP addresses for the Physical host
  • Reloaded the HyperV server from scratch and created new VM.

Ive had HyperV previously running on this machine without problem, so now i cant see why i cant get it running again.

Anybody have any suggestions on what i can try next, im all out of ideas.

Hyper-V & EqualLogic

Hi All,

I am setting up my first SQL Hyper-V environment. Here is the
setup

Host:Windows 2012 R2 Data Center
7 pNIC's

2 - Teamed for Hyper-V Management
2 - Teamed for Hyper-V Virtualization
1 - iSCSI
1 - iSCSI
1 - Live Migration

SAN: EqualLogic PS6100 (Raid 50 - SAS 10K Drives)

V/M Guest:
Windows 2012 R2 with SQL
I have the vNIC connected to the network

I have created in Hyper-V - two Virtual Switches for connection to the EQL. These
vSwitches are connected to the pNICS for iSCSI on the host.

I have a volume on the EQL for the .VHDX's connected to the host. Inside resides our SQL VHDX.

I have another volume on the EQL that is for the SQL Data and Logs - I am connecting this directly to the V/M Guest via disk management.

The question I have... is this setup in a suitable way? I do not say "best" way, as
that is subjective. I do not have additional pNIC's to use for iSCSI traffic on
the guest, so I am using the iSCSI pNIC's of the host.

OR

Do I just create one big VHDX for O/S & SQL where data and logs reside as well.

Thanks!

Authorization manager (azman) for hyper-v control with replication

I am using a pair of server 2012 machines for hyper-v hosts with replication enabled and I need to use azman to set up users who are authorized to manage (start/stop/restart) selected VMs only.  The instructions I have seen use the hyper-v XML data store.  I have not seen a way to replicate the data store between the 2 hyper-v hosts.  Assuming that I set up duplicate authorizations on the 2 machines, do I need to set the VM scope on both servers or just the primary server of the replication pair.  I do not have a pair of servers to test with so I will be using test VMs on the production hosts.

The process seems straightforward until replication is added.

Hyper-V Configuration Questions (hard drives, partitions, etc)

Hey guys, this is probably a general question but I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about optimizing Hyper-V performance with the setup I have. This is in no way an enterprise environment type of thing, I am running a standalone server at home.

Anyhow, everything is up and running now ok but I'm sure it's not optimal... here is my setup:

Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V
8-core processor
32GB RAM 1866mhz
Hard Drive 1 - SSD 100GB
Hard Drive 2 & 3 - 1TB each in a hardware RAID 0

I have 8 VM's running now on the RAID drives and my OS (C:\) is on the SSD. The VMs are all Windows 7 Pro machines and 1 of them has SQL Server running on it.  What I did was made my RAID drives the D:\ partition and in there is the Hyper-V folder which houses all the vhdx files and stuff. Snapshots and server backups go to an external USB 3.0 drive connected to the server.

Question is (and I don't mind purchasing extra SSD's or Hard Disks if I have to) but should I configure any of this different? Should I have all my VM vhdx files in their own separate directories on different drives or anything like that?  Just looking for a straight forward optimal way of utilizing what I have to it's full potential. I can change RAID too if need be.

Thanks.

hyper-v manager in windows 8.1 cannot connect to hyper-v server. RPC server unavailable

I am setting up a new server. I installed Hyper-V 2012 R2 on it and want to manage it remotely with Hyper-V manager from a Windows 8.1 computer. I am unable to communicate with the computer with the server. Hyper-V manager gives me the following error: RPC Server Unavailable. Unable to establish communication between "the hypervserver" and "the W8.1station". Both computer are located in the same subnet and both are on the same domain.

I configured the server with a fixed IP, DNS, to accept pings, connected it to the domain and set it up to allow remote access and management. Although I do not think it is necessary, I added my domain account to the administrators group in the hyper-V server. I can perfectly ping the server and remote into the server from the W8.1 station. From he server I can also ping the W8.1 station as well as exterior websites (DNS functionality is ok).

I have play with the firewall in both, the Hyper-V server and the management station and have not being able to get them to communicate. Blaming the Hyper-V server for all this and the great time that I have already spent on this problem, I borrowed a Windos 7 Pro computer, installed RSAT and enabled the Hyper-V manager in that computer. Launched the manager AND CONNECTED TO THE HYPER-V SERVER WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!!!!!!

I have read a lot already about this but most people having this issue are setting up servers in a workgroup environment, and almost nobody is using Windows 8.1 as the management station. Can someone PLEASE give me a hand with this problem??

Thanks to you all !!!

Is hyper-v host wipe-and-load scenario safe for guests? thinking of upgrading host from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2

0

Hello,

Planning a future domain controllers upgrade to 2012 R2 level, that includes one virtual domain controller (hyper-v guest). Figured it would be a good idea also to upgrade (wipe and load) the 2008 R2 Hyper-V host to 2012 R2.

Basically, wondering if that is a safe scenario to simply wipe the 2008 R2 host and load Hyper-V 2012 R2, then re-attach existing guest files to host using existing vhd and config files residing on separate partition. safe?

Thanks for input!

server 2012 r2 live migration fails with hardware error

0

  • Hello all, we just upgraded one of our hyper v hosts from server 2012 to server 2012 r2; previously we had live replication setup between it and another box on the network which was also running server 2012. After installing server 2012 r2 when a live migration is attempted we get the message:

"The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine. Virtual machine migration failed at migration source."

The servers in question are both dell, currently we have a poweredge r910 running server 2012 and a poweredge r900 running server 2012 r2. The section under processor for "migrate to a physical computer using a different processor" is already checked and this same vm was successfully being live replicated before the upgrade to server 2012 r2. What would have changed around hardware requirements?

We are migrating from server 2012 on the poweredge r910 to server 2012 r2 on the poweredge r900. Also When I say this was an upgrade, we did a full re install and wiped out the installation of server 2012 and installed server 2012 r2, this was not an upgrade installation.

Not able to manage virtual machines when they are off in a Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster environment

Hi I'm wondering if anyone else has encounter this weird problem: I have a 3-node Windows 2012 enterprise hyper-v cluster. If a virtual machine is shut off I can't manage it. When I right click on the virtual machine and choose Settings it gives me an error" Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer "hyper-v-host1" because the object was not found". But if I move the virtual machine to a different node then everything will be fine(doesn't matter if I move it back or not). To me it feels like the host is not able to refresh the virtual machine's settings and by moving the VM it is able to refresh and let me change the settings after.

Any help is appreciated.

Server 2012 R2 Standard - HyperV - Unlimited XP VMs?

0

Hi,   Under the Server 2012 R2 Standard license, can I install,

One POSE running Server 2012 R2 + Hyper-V

On that Hyper-V run 20+ Virtual Machines running Windows XP(each with their own license)

I know that Server 2012 R2 Standard license has a maximum of two "Virtual Instances" (ie it can run a maximum of two Windows Server Instances) but can it run any number of other OSes (ie XP, linux, etc..)

I fail to believe that Server 2012 R2 Standard can run a maximum of two Virtual Machines using Hyper-V, how limiting it that?

So my question is, Can I run 20+ virtual XP machines using one Server 2012 R2 Standard license using Hyper-V?

Thanks.

Hyper-V + SAN

Hi All,

I have a question on recommended practices.

Hyper-V Host (2012 R2) is iSCSI to SAN

When creating a volume to use for the guest VM (2012 R2), should i set it online and initialize on host then set all VHDX there OR

should I keep it offline and use it as a dedicated or passthrough disk with no VHDX.

Thanks!

Virtual SAN Manager Hyper-V 2012 R2 iSCSI

I think I know the answer to this question, but one someone to tell me for sure....

We currently have iSCSI San's implemented in our organization.  We are using Hyper-V 2012 R2 and doing nothing fancy with it.  We could like to be able to take advantage of Virtual SAN Manager within Hyper-V to take care of the snapshotting, etc..  It appears that in order to use this you must have a FC SAN.  Can someone tell me if this is a correct statement or not?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

shutdown, copy, start vhdx

I have read a dozen or so scripts to safely shutdown a vhdx, copy it to a local backup drive and restart the vhdx but none of them work, not one. Maybe my scenario is off but here is the foundation: host =MS server 2012 std 64bit, 2 x 128 ssd o/s, 2 x 1Tb data drives (one for backup), I have 2 vhdx's - 1=Active Directory running MS Server 2008 32bit and 2nd  running MS Server 2012 std 64bit for files and a sql express db (probably sql express 2008r2 or 2012). I need a powershell script (or any other for that matter - have tried combination of ps1 & bat files) that will properly shut down the vhdx's (presently Drive H -Hyper-V), copy them to drive D -Backup and then restart the vhdx's. I would like this to run daily at a prescribed time or realtime, do not want to merge files so differential out, need a notice or FILO to insure the backup does not utilize more space then what is available (delete previous version would be nice), and possibly send an email upon completion. Expected size of AD = 60-80Gb, expected size of File/Db backup 400Gb. Size of hd = 1Tb for backup. Is there a way to do this or am I pipe dreaming and should I buy vhdx backup software / program and if so, any recomendations?

Live migration of VM from CSV storage -> local storage

0
0

I have a VM I want to migrate from our CSV storage onto local storage. However, I can't find a way to complete this.

Live migration won't give me the local disks as an acceptable destination.
During this live migration even if I say that I don't want it to be highly available, the next part to the wizard doesn't give me any options whatsoever to move it anywhere.
I've tried moving it via the Hyper-V manager - which then directs me to the Failover Cluster Manager. Even there I can't give it a suitable destination on the local disk to stick the machine.

What am I missing in this?
Is there a way to do this without manually copying the VHDs to that location and creating a new VM?
