Running Windows Server (2008 R2, 2012 R2) on Oracle VM 3.2.x

Hi All,

I desperately need some help and advice on running Windows servers on OVM. I am working with a project which is heavily Oracle based and there are some Windows servers to support the Infrastructure. The account do not want to use multiple hypervisors and they are pushing for OVM to be used.

Can anyone offer any advice if they have used OVM? How robust is this? How is HA achieved? How is DR achieved?

I was planning to use Hyper-V 2012 with Replicas to have our DR but I have no idea about the OVM features. Luckily I will not be designing or implementing the OVM solution but some advice would be good and whether we are likely to have issues deploying 2008 R2, 2012 R2.

Many thanks for your help

NIC Config Design options

Hi,

I am getting ready to create my first Server 2012R2 Hyper-v failover cluster.  I have 2 servers with 6 NICs each and a HP ISCSI SAN.  My question is what is the best way to configure the 6 NICs on each machine to support this?  There are some choices that seem required:

2 NICs from each server to connect to the ISCSI SAN

Other than that I need the regular stuff.  I have seen some posts where the author recommends using one nic for heartbeat and admin, others that say no to this, etc.  If you were configuring this from scratch, what is the best way?

Thanks

creating vms when the system allows you only one vm

hi'

I am dual booting windows 7 and windows server 2012.  I created one virtual machine under windows server 2012. But, after that I could not create two other virtual machines I am required to create on my assignment. The reason is disk space.

I can create 35 GB unallocated resource from my C: drive which has 160 GB available. But, it would not allow me to format it with new simple volume, and I can't make the space primary (already there 4 primary disk space). it says logical.  It has star where it supposed to have volume drive. when I tried to use this unallocated space to install  windows server operating system, in the middle of the process, it stops and says "out of disk space". I tried several times, with same result.

How can I create my other two virtual machines? Is there a way to go around this problem.

Windows 2012 Getting files ready for installation.....zzzzz

Hi,

I am using a windows 8.1 management workstation to manage my hyper-v 2012 R2 core server via Hyper-V manager.

So I went to create my first Windows 2012 R2 STD with GUI, selected the Dell bootable ISO (6GB) and the installation has started.

I wait 50 minutes and it has only done 33% of the install and it is sitting on "Getting files ready for installation":

Is this normal?

If it were being install on a physcial server I think it would be quicker.

Can anyone explain to me how long this should take?

My hyper-v server core runs on a Dell R720 quad core Intel CPU 2.4GHZ, it has SAS drives.

My management workstation has an I7 2.2Ghz.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Alfred

Can i install the Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 CORE only in production??

Or do i have to install Hyper-v server from windows server 2012 r2 server role.

This is to implement Hyper-V in my production environement.

This server is dedicated to be a Hyper-V primary host there will be no oher roles installed on that server.

I will install the core bcause i will do all my configuration from a console on my other Windows server 2012 R2

Thanks for helping out :)))))

Access Slow On Hyper-V (Server 2012). Needs To Be Rebooted Daily.

I have a couple access databases that were migrated from Server 2003 to a virtual server on 2012. About a month after the migration they started running really slow when more than one user had the database open. I went through all the common fixes for access and none of them worked. I put the virtual host in its own group and made a new policy so that it wouldnt be burded with extra virus scanning. Nothing is fixing this problem.

I moved one of the database back to the old 2003 server and it runs fine there, even though this server has a fraction of the power of the new server and is using half its resources. Also the server 2012 that is having the problem is hardly using any resources at all. 1-3% processor!

Rebooting the virtual server every morning seems to help, I have been doing that the last three days. Maybe there is something being effected after the backups every night?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Can hyper-v image in Windows 2012 replicate to Windows 2012 R2?

Can we set a hyper-v replica from Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2 server, and use extend replica to clone the image to another Windows 2012/Windows 2012 R2 server?

Thanks,

Why Symbolic link can disappear?

Routing issue

I have a 2K12 hyperV machine with 2 NIcs (192..1.11 & 192..112)

I recently downloaded an appliance that creates a private switch with a network id 192.168.56.1, and the VM has 192.168.56.101. From IE or Chrome on the win 2012 box, when I typehttp://192.168.56.101 I reach the machine (web site inside it) but I can not do it from another machine (laptop or desktop they are on the same network as the hyper-V 192.168.1...) using IE or chrome. pinging the ip from the hyperv machine responds but not from others. I checked the route print and have this on the hyper-V

192.168.56.0    255.255.255.0         On-link      192.168.56.1    261
 192.168.56.1  255.255.255.255         On-link      192.168.56.1    261

the question is why I can connect from the machine itself but not others? What is needed to be added in the routing table on the other machines in order to be able to join this appliance from another machine

Thanks in advance

Hypervisor disables Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012R2! Why? How to solve?

$

Hi,

according to the official documentation of Microsoft, Hyper-V does not block Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

From powercfg I get the following output:

The following sleep states are not available on this system: Standby (S1) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S3) An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Hibernate An internal system component has disabled hibernation. Hypervisor Standby (Connected) The hypervisor does not support this standby state. The system firmware does not support this standby state. Hybrid Sleep Standby (S3) is not available. Hibernation is not available. The hypervisor does not support this standby state. Fast Startup Hibernation is not available.

I already installed a graphics device driver to prevent the graphics device from blocking Sleep and Hyper-V. So this should not be an issue.

What can I do to enable Sleep and Hibernate?

Daniel

Handling of reading and writing to User Profile Disks

A quick question. I have a pool VM's set up using RD Virtualization Host and with User Profile Disks on remote storage. Are reads and writes to the User Profile Disks performed directly by the VM's themselves or does Hyper-V do the actual the reading / writing on behalf of the VMs ?

Thanks,

Andrew

Multiple TAP Adapters, what's creating them?

I have 2 Hyper-V hosts running Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.

On each VM I'm noticing multiple TAP adapters ranging from 1 to as many as 7.
I'm having difficulty figuring out what is creating these adapters. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I used disk2vhd to create a vhdx from a machine running Server 2012 R2.  The boot (and only) drive for the machine is a 1TB mirror using an Adaptec RAID controller.  I created a Gen 2 VM on a WIndows 8.1 Pro machine, and attached the vhdx.  When I start the VM, the error message "Boot failed.  EFI SCSI device." is displayed.  How can I resolve this?

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V - access network

$

I installed WS 2012 H-V on a desktop machine. The machine is new and known to work.

I installed the WS 2012 H-V bare metal - new disk, etc. The intent is to make a project development workstation running systems we support and are upgrading.

During the install I configured the network with a static IP, DHCP, Gateway etc. using the CLI. They are known to be correct.

ipconfig reports the settings as expected.

A view of the wired interface shows the connection is active.

From the command line I cannot ping anything on the LAN let alone the Internet. I cannot access the server from any other machine on the network.

What did I miss?

Any help will be gratefully accepted.

Mike

Is there a way to enable Relication on a single Clusternode ?

Why isn´t it possible to activate Replication on single Nodes of a cluster ? I can have machines on the Nodes (outside the cluster) but no way to replicate them. Or did I something wrong ? If I did everything fine I think its a feature what really should be implemented. Help is welcome

GPU Pass-through in the Works for Hyper-V? GRID Tech wanted!

$

A plea or question - call it what you will. PLEASE, GPU Pass-through for Hyper-V! Is it in the works for future versions of Hyper-V? Has there been any more collaboration with NVIDIA on GRID tech? It seem like Citrix and VMWARE are stealing all of NVIDIA's attention.

RemoteFX is an improvement over no VGPU, but needs the GPU pass-through. After implementing RDS 2012R2 with VMM 2012 R2 for Iowa State University, I am having to begin development on XenServer for GPU Pass-through / GRID enabled virtual desktops and miss VMM already. I'd even settle for a new VMM plugin for XenServer since development seems to have ended.

Thanks,

Damien

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

Hi,

I have the problem that when I start a VM with windows server 2012 on a hyper-v v2 host, it takes very long till the VM get bind the static or dynamic ip adress. I tried both, static and dynamic. In every case I see at the event viewer the following error:

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

After a few minutes the VM gets bind the IP an everything works fine. But at the next time I reboot the machine the same failure appear.

Trying to use legacy network adapter results in the same problem. After this I tried to export the vm to a hyper-v v3 host. At first boot time
the problem didn't appear and the vm get's bind the ip adress without problems. Then after upgrading the integration services to hyper-v v3
version the same problem appears but without register it in the event viewer.

Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?

Kind Regards,
Marcus

there is no enough disk space

I am faced another problem when I was creating VM. Around 80%, it paused and the error was "there is not enough space".

I have at least 127 GB available in my hard drive disk. Also, when I tried to create VHD, it allowed me only dynamic, not fixed.

it says you don't have enough disk space when I try to create fixed vhd. What is going on?
