Installation Windows server 2012 hyper-v

Background

I have machines running windows server 2003, Windows Server 2012, Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. I want to virtualize them all. They are part of a large system we built and maintain. We are in the process of redesigning the system and the plan is to run the old system components as VM's on one big server and build the new system on the same server. This makes for an efficient development setup and we can design and test the upgrade incrementally. We have an incremental rollout where the system must use old and new components.

My question is; if I use the Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V how do I capture the running versions of the systems and make them VM's?

A related question; The server I plan to use as the VM server is a heavy-duty HP box that is running Windows Server 2003. (16 cores, 64 GB memory and 8TB SAS) Can I install Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V without having to go thru the whole install / configuration process?

Thanks for any guidance.

Hyper-V Cluster and VMs loosing packets Windows Server 2012 R2

0

Hi, I'm currently experiencing packet loss on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster that hosts several VMs which are also having this same behavior.

The Hyper-V Servers each have 10 NICs:

  • 1 dedicated for administration and domain validation
  • 2 dedicated for the VMS
  • 4 are connected to an iSCSI SAN (separated switches)
  • 1 for Live Migrations
  • 1 for Heart Beat
  • 1 for Backups

The strange thing is that both the NIC use for administration and the NICs used for VMs are having the same problems, if I start pinging any Hyper-V host, the response time times-out from time to time. The same on the VMs, all of them are having trouble and the packets either takes a while to respond or time-out.

None of the NICs are using teaming.

The NICs that are used for the VMs doesn't have any tcp/ip settings configured on the Hosts.

I have all the latest patches install until today. This is happening across all the nodes of the Hyper-V cluster.

This doesn't happen to any other physical servers on the network.

Any ideas are appreciated!

Thanks

Is there a way to enable Relication on a single Clusternode ?

0

Why isn´t it possible to activate Replication on single Nodes of a cluster ? I can have machines on the Nodes (outside the cluster) but no way to replicate them. Or did I something wrong ? If I did everything fine I think its a feature what really should be implemented. Help is welcome

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE).

I have a 3 node cluster that has replica setup to replicate to another cluster off-site.

Suddenly one of the servers is not replicating with the error:

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE). (Virtual Machine ID CC0FD4CC-F9B7-4C68-ABE8-B7D52A87899F)

All other servers are replicating fine so there cannot be a permissions or connectivity issue between the 2 clusters.

This server has 2TB of data so I'd rather not have to start the replication again.

Does anyone have any pointers?

Thanks.

Failover cluster validation errors

Hi,

We are setting up a failover cluster for clients and got some items to be sorted out in the validation.

Lets start with the simple item:

The following Security updates is said te be needed on the one server but not win updates or wsus picks them up. Trying to do it manually it gives the msg "This update is not applicable to your computer"

2 identical servers. i Did not install the O/S but how can this be?

KB2665364Security Update
KB2647518Security Update
KB2641653Security Update
KB2633873Security Update
KB2588516Security Update
KB2572077Security Update
KB2518869Security Update

Then on the networking i got the following on the Nics used to connect to the EMC SAN(i Did not configure the SAN):

Network interfaces stdhost02.stdavids.co.za - SPA Port1 iSCSI Port1 and stdhost01.stdavids.co.za - SPA Port0 iSCSI Port1 are on the same cluster network, yet either address 10.10.1.3 is not reachable from 10.10.1.4 or the ping latency is greater than the maximum allowed 500 milliseconds.

and

Network interfaces stdhost01.stdavids.co.za - SPA Port0 iSCSI Port1 and stdhost02.stdavids.co.za - SPA Port1 iSCSI Port1 are on the same cluster network, yet either address 10.10.1.4 is not reachable from 10.10.1.3 or the ping latency is greater than the maximum allowed 500 milliseconds.

The cluster should not use there Nics above...

Then another Networking warning that adapters is on the same subnet...

i Have not done this in prob 2 years but think i did it right.

Heartbeat is on different sub-net (10.10.10.1 & 10.10.10.2, 255.255.255.0)

Live migration is on own subnet (10.11.11.1 & 10.11.11.2, 255.255.255.0)

Operating system Nic is (192.168.2.6 & 192.168.2.7, 255.255.0.0)

Hyper-V Nic (DHCP Assigned: 192.168.3.x)

Then there is the SAN Fibre nic's which is on 10.10.1.x 255.255.255.0

One thing it is complaing about is the Hyper-v and O/S nics on the same subnets...Is that not right?

Thanks for your time in the matter!

Win Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V UEFI boot from WDS failed. (Integrated mode only).

Hi, here is what's going on: Gen 2 UEFI boot works fine only in Standalone mode. But in AD integrated mode - PXE only. Any ideas? There's my settings and boot screen below:

Not able to manage virtual machines when they are off in a Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster environment

Hi I'm wondering if anyone else has encounter this weird problem: I have a 3-node Windows 2012 enterprise hyper-v cluster. If a virtual machine is shut off I can't manage it. When I right click on the virtual machine and choose Settings it gives me an error" Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer "hyper-v-host1" because the object was not found". But if I move the virtual machine to a different node then everything will be fine(doesn't matter if I move it back or not). To me it feels like the host is not able to refresh the virtual machine's settings and by moving the VM it is able to refresh and let me change the settings after.

Any help is appreciated.

Can I assign several physical storage locations for each virtual machine when using the replication-feature from Hyper-V 2012 R2?

Hi everyone,

I have 2x physical servers running Hyper-V 2012 R2. Each hosts several virtual machines. The VHDs of the VMs are stored on several dedicated physical disks to have a performance boost. For exampe if VM A has two VHDs attached I made sure that the VHDs are on different physical disks to have them not slow-down each other in case of intensive disk accesses.

So far so good. I was looking forward to the replication-feature. The idea is to have the two physical servers have their primary running VMs being replicated to the other physical server and vice-versa. I was hoping to have the chance to choose for each individual VM where the replicated VHD will be stored. But instead I can only see the one location/path which is configured in Hyper-V Manager when I activate the replication-feature on the server.

Is there by any chance a way how to select the storage location for each VHD/VM if using the replication-feature of Hyper-V 2012 R2?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Sebastian

DirectAccess Hyper-V Manager RPC Server Unavailable Server 2012

I have a windows 8 enterprise client connected remotely via DirectAccess (server 2012) to a hyper-v server running server 2012.  Both are a member of the domain and when the windows 8 client is on the local LAN, hyper-v management works just as it should.  I can't figure out what is needed to be able to manage virtual machines in Hyper-V manager.  I keep getting RPC server unavailable, unable to establish communication between hyper-v server and my da client. I have also ran the hvremote tool and which didn't seem to do anything, until a bit later I noticed that I shouldn't since the version isn't supported yet for 2012.  I also found an article aboutEnabling Hyper-V Management through DirectAccess but that article doesn't seem to work or be for server 2012.

Anyone have any ideas?  If its all just client firewall settings I would like to just make a GP for the firewall exceptions so that any other client I want to work I don't have to mess with anything client side.

Thanks!

Port Issue in Windows Server 2012

Hi,

I'm setting up a windows server 2012 hyper v environment. I have a win 2012 standard server and have installed hyper v role. Have set up a Ubuntu 12.04 server and installed IBM WebShpere on the Ubuntu machine as a virtual machine. IBM WebShpere requires ports 9060, 9080 etc to be open. I'm able to access the IBM web console from the Ubuntu system and from windows server host machine. But When I try to access the IBM console from an external machine on the same network get error. I'm not able to telnet the UBUNTU server and windows server on port 9060 from external machine.. I have enabled rule on win server firewall to allow connection, restarted the firewall service but still cannot telnet on port 9060. How do I make this port to listen on windows server 2012 as this is required by IBM WebShpere installed on the hyper v.

Move Virtual Machine Storage stuck "Loading" CSVs

As I understand it the "Move Virtual Machine Storage" screen is supposed to enumerate the CSVs available to the cluster in the bottom left portion of the window.  It seems to be stuck on a "Loading..." status and never shows the CSVs.  Also, when I try the "Add Share" button and type in a share to use it doesn't do anything.  Thoughts?

Hyper-v and very slow network

Dear all,

I have a big problem with my hyper-v server and network card. I've found a lot of topic around this question but none of them helped me.

I have a Win 2008 R2 Server with only Hyper-V installed. I have 3 NIC , one is reserved to the host management and the others two are reserved for virtual machine .

All NIC are Intel, one is integrated on the Intel motherboard and the others are Intel Gigabit ET Dual port .

Before installing the role of Hyper-V all NIC worked perfectly with speed around 1Gb (file transfer average 90 MB/Sec, of course I have a Gigabit LAN) .

After Hyper-V install, the host system  is going very slow and the network file transfer using the dedicated NIC is about ten time slower (9-10MB /sec) . Same problem with all VM off and also if I remove all VM !

I tried all of suggestion found in old post (disabling TCP checksum / offload ...) but nothing happens.

What is really strange is that by removing all network card all the Host operating system seems to improve the speed... but, of course, I can't use  my LAN :(

I need help because every night I must make a full backup of Virtual hard disk from the host to a backup server in my lan.

My configuration:

- Server Win 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V and no others role

- 2 Virtual Machine (one Win 2008 R2 and one Win 7 Ultimate)

- NAS Linux (access via SMB with no problem)

- Various Windows 7 Pro client

Thanks in advance to everybody,

Luca M.

Hyper-V RemoteFX Greyed out on Windows Server 2012 R2

On a domain joined host, I've been having trouble with Hyper-V RemoteFX. It turns out that if you have Group Policy set to do any kind of logon screen notification, the fake user that RemoteFX accesses the graphics card with is unable to connect or log in - causing the options for graphics cards to fail.

There's two solutions I've found:

  1. Disable the GPO for things such as notifying about failed password attempts.
  2. Change the host to be in a separate OU and not permit inheritance of GPO's to that container.

It's all messy though - is there a patch or fix that deals with this issue? I'm up to date on Windows Update for the entire forest.

Windows 7 Ent cant boot if remotefx is enabled

Hey guys.

Im using hyperV with Server 2012 Standard and i got one issue. I enabled the remotefx at hyperv because my server haves 6550D Amd video, well i see no any erros...

With windows 7 enterprise guest at my server it works fine, but if i add the hardware "remotefx video" at configurations option the windows freeze at loading screen.

I tried to enter safemode and remove all video adapters, but when the win 7 reinstall that and reboot i got the same problem again!

The emulation works fine only without the remotefx video.

Any ideas?

Clustering Free Hyper-V or Windows Server 2012 Standard with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter

0

Hi,

Is anyone running a cluster which has Datacenter 2012 clustered with either Standard 2012 or Hyper-V 2012?

I have seen posts here and elsewhere that say it is possible but when I rang Microsoft Licencing team to discuss licensing in this scenario they advised me that the hardware and OS on each clustered server must be identical.

Now I'm really confused.

Thanks,

Hyper-v 2012 R2 server core recommendations for single server setup

0

Hi All,

Next weekend I will be installing a brand new Dell 720 server for a client of mine.

I would like to hear some recommendations on how to install this hypervisor.

Let me state that I have had some experience with virtualization technology  in the past with VMWARE ESXi.

This is a small client with under 10 users but I have learned that with the 2012 product offering you cannot get Small Business Server any more. I know Microsoft has Windows server 2012 Essentials but you would have to have Exchange server in the cloud which my client does not want. He wants to run his Exchange server in house.

Also he needs Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Server) because his accounting application requires it.

He has an existing Windows 2003 domain controller that eventually has to be decommissioned because it is too old and slow.

So I thought I install Hyper-v 2012 R2 core on the new server and then create 2 VMs:

1) Windows 2012 STD to run as a secondary domain controller.

2) Windows 2012 STD member server with Exchange server 2013 and Remote Desktop Services role.

My questions here are these:

1) Do I install the Hypervisor in workgroup or domain mode?

2) When I am finished with the old server do I transfer the AD FSMO roles onto the VM that is acting as a domain controller?

The new server has 2 CPUs. How does Microsoft licensing go here? I know that Windows 2012 STD gives me 2 instances with the same product key on the same server for 1 CPU. What happens if you have 2?

Can someone give me some insight on how to go about this? I remember that I found this easier with VMWARE Esxi.

Now with Hyper-V I need to also get a management workstation with Windows 8 professional on it to manage the Hyper-V core server.

Thanks and regards

Alfred

Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor does not start (Error 1314)

The Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor service throws this error when I try and start it:
"Windows could not start the Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor service on Local Computer.

Error 1314: A Required privilege is not held by the client."

This is a 2008 R2 VM (integration services 6.3.9600.16384) running on a Server 2012 R2. This began happening after I upgraded to the latest integration components when I moved this VM to a 2012 R2 host.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Setting Scope HyperV 2012 R2 What replaced ScopeOfResidence?

0

Basically, I want to know how to set the scope for a hyper-v vm in Server 2012 R2 so users see only the specific vm's assigned to them. I work at an academic institution, we intend to upgrade our 2008 R2 servers to 2012 R2 but before we can do that we need our vm creation script to work properly. In older editions that have the WMI v1 namespace it used to be to set the scope for a vm you did so by modifying Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData.ScopeOfResidence. In the WMI v2 namespace Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData has been removed and most of its features have been placed in Msvm_VirtualSystemSettingData. ScopeOfResidence however is not in there and I can't find it or anything that sounds the same in any of the virtual system classes. Below is the unedited portion of the old script I am having trouble converting to the v2 namespace. Someone please help, I need this working by the end of the month or I am going to have to abandon the server upgrade entirely.

# Set Scope!
$VM_Service = get-wmiobject -namespace root\virtualization Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService
$ListofVMs = get-wmiobject -namespace root\virtualization Msvm_ComputerSystem -filter  "ElementName <> Name "  | `
    where { $_.ElementName -like $vmName }
foreach ($VirtualMachine in $ListofVMs) {
        if ($VirtualMachine -ne $Null)
        {
        $VMGlobalSetting = get-wmiobject -namespace root\virtualization Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData | where `
           { $_.ElementName -like "*$($VirtualMachine.ElementName)*" }

         $VMGlobalSetting.ScopeOfResidence = $scope

         $VM_Service.ModifyVirtualSystem($VirtualMachine.__PATH, $VMGlobalSetting.psbase.Gettext(1))

          }
Write-Host "Virtual Machine" $vmName "Added to Scope" $scope
}
# End of Set Scope
