XP/SP3 & Hyper-V RC1 - cannot upgrade integration services

$

I have two XP / SP3 vitrual machines, and on each one, after I dismiss the "found new hardware" wizard, and try to install the Integration Services, I receive the "A previous installation og Hyper-V integration services has been detected"

I click OK to "upgrade or repair", and I get the following error message:

"An error has occured: Fatal error during installation."

My event viewer doesn't seem to have any relevant information.

Ideas?

Copy files from hyper-v server 2012 R2 to VM's

Hi,

We have files (about 120GB) and would like to make a share folder in one of the VM so that all the VM's access that share.

How to make available the 120GB content from :

1)Host (hyper-V Server Core) to VM's

2) one of the VM to other VM's .

All the machines are in same network.

Thanks

Error when creating VHDX via Hyper-V Manager remotely

Hey all!

So, I installed Hyper-V 2012 Core on a box, patched it, and then joined it to the domain. If I connect to the server via Hyper-V Manager from either a Windows 8 machine or Server 2012 machine and try to create a VM, it says "There was an unexpected error in configuring the hard disk on [Insert VM Name Here]." I feel like I've tried everything. I can not create the disk manually via the Manager on its own, before or after the VM being created. I can, however, create the disk via PowerShell with out a problem! Via PowerShell, I can create a dynamic VHDX disk every time without an issue.

I was curious if anyone has had this problem and/or knows a solution.

Thanks in advance!

PXE-Boot with Hyper-V based on W2K12 R2 with Gen2-VMs

Dear Community,

as you probably know the new R2-Version was advertised with the ability of PxE-booting with the synthetic instead of the legacy-nic which works with poor 100 mbit/s.

Here´s the problem:

When I create a new virtual machine with Gen2 without the option "Secure Boot" and PxE-boot it, I get the following error:

Boot failed. EFI Network.
Boot failed. EFI SCSI Device.
No Operating System was Loaded. Press a key to retry the boot sequence

When I create another new virtual machine with Gen2 but with the option "Secure Boot" and PxE-boot it, I get this error:

Station IP address is x.x.x.x
Server IP address is x.x.x.x
NBP filename is pxelinux.0
NBP filesize is 15888 Bytes
Downloading NBP file...
Successfully downloaded NBP file.
Boot Failed. EFI Network. Failed Secure Boot Verification.
Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device
No Operating System was Loaded. Press a key to retry the boot sequence

When taking a look at the log of the TFTP-Server (TFTPD32) I get the same information regardless which way I do it. The only interesting thing it says is:

"Peer returns ERROR <User aborted the transfer> ->aborting transfer"

I have also tried to use another tool called Serva as TFTP/PXE-Server -> The error still occurs.

Before anybody wants me to try to do it as Gen1 -> I know that this works, but I want to get it running under Gen2 since the synthetic one works (should work) much faster than the legacy-one.

Really looking forward to get some useful information here.

Thanks in advance !

No external network access from guest VM, on Windows 8.1 host

This is driving me crazy and I've spent a little too long of a vacation trying to figure thus out. But since this vacation was a chance for me to make some progress on a non-work project - well, it's really bugging me (and is a blocker I've had for two days so far)! Any help would be appreciated.

I am running HyperV on a Windows 8.1 host. I need to create a guest that has internet access. Just to remove any questions as to whether my hardware and OS installation support this, I had this working perfectly last week on the exact same machine. I simply added an external network through the HyperV Virtual Switch Manager, added that under Settings -> Network for the VM in question and everything just worked immediately. The guest obtained an IP address just fine and all was rosy.

So, then I come on vacation and set up a VM. I'm on a different physical network but everything seems the same from the host perspective - I just connected to the wireless network and the host itself works just fine.

However, no matter what I try I can't get the guest VM to obtain an IP address. I've done the same configuration with the external virtual switch, bound (in Settings -> Network) to the VM and so on. The VM sees the virtual NIC card just fine - but always fails to obtain an IP address (can't reach the DHCP server, I believe).

The only thing that has changed - as far as I know - is the network environment. The new environment immediately and easily supported me getting the host hooked up (it got an IP address itself) and provides access to the Internet.

By the way, I did see some recommendations to create an INTERNAL virtual switch and bridge with the wifi connection. I don't know why that would be preferred over the more direct use of an external virtual switch - but, regardless, that approach failed too (same issue - no response from DHCP server).

Any ideas on what might be going on here?

Thanks in advance.

Importing Vm's from Server 2008 core to Server 2012 R2

I cannot import my Vm's on a new Server 2012 R2 box.  The old server ran Server 2008 core.  I get the error "Hyper V did not find virtual machines to import."  I have trying exporting and importing, also have tried turning off the hyper v management service after shutting down all the VM's and copying the virtual hard drive to the new server.  Nothing worked.  Is there an incompatibility between these versions?

Solution advice

Hello,

I will try to explain the situation:

Hardware overview:

Server1 2008
Role: Hyper-V Server and Back-up Server
Physical

Server2 SBS 2008
Role: AD, DNS, DHCP, Exchange,
Virtual

Server3 2008
Role: Remote Desktop Server
Virtual

The server is performing very bad since design.
Solutions from supplier:
- cache on raid controller
- seperate raid volume for virtual vm's

But unfortunately those solutions don't work.

I would like to setup a new server and move the virtual SBS server to a new server, but not virtual.

How would you guys approach this case?
Hope to hear some reactions.

Problems with PVLAN

I have setup a Isolated network with a primary and secondary vlan using Server 2012 R2 hosts.

Everything works ok on the virtual Machines when settings are published.

But after a restart the isolated network doesnt respond, its more or less dead. Even though Everything says  OK.

I have also a normal truncated vlan on Another NIC that works fine all the time.

If I do a shutdown of the virtual machine and then start it, the isolated network works fine.

Tryed the same network on a 2012 Host, and there I can do restarts of virtual Machines without problem.

Any suggestion where to look now? Im suspecting that I get a lock somewhere, maybe on the Vswitch maybe on the physical switch. But cant really find anything.

Teamed NICs no longer work after upgrade to 2012 R2

Hi,

My Hyper-V installation on 2012 Data Centre used two teamed NICs as a Hyper-V virtual switch configured to connect to the external network.

After upgrading to 2012 R2 Data Centre I no longer have connectivity to the external network. VMs that use this switch no longer have network connectivity.

I've removed the switch and reconfigured but with no joy. I've also completely removed the Hyper-V role and reinstalled but again - no joy.

For the time being the NICs are configured as separate switches and all is OK.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Sean

Failure configuring windows update - when server is second generation

Hi

When I have created Server 2012 as second generation wm's they fail to update from Windows Update.

They revert after applying 98% of the updates.

Anyone seen this? And what to do?

How can we properly backup our only virtual DC before adding a second one? We want to mitigate potential risks of loosing AD.

Hi,

I need some help, please.

We have only one DC and it’s a VM running on Hyper-V R2. Now we are planning to add a second one and we want to mitigate potential risks of loosing AD if something goes wrong. In other words, we need a contingency plan.

Our Virtual DC is running Windows 2008 R2 and our second (physical) DC will be running the same OS.

I have the following question:

  • How can I properly backup my virtual DC? If something goes wrong I need to be able to restore the virtual DC to its original state and bring our AD back.
  • Can I use export/import? MS doesn’t recommend taking snapshot of virtual DCs.
  • Can I clone the DC?
  • Can I have USN errors?

I’m open to ideas and suggestions.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi<o:p></o:p>

We have a 3 Node Hyper-V Cluster with a Dell 6000
Equalogic SAN connected over 10 GB iSCSI. Actually we use Backup Exec 2012 for
Hyper-V Backup, but I am looking for a Off Host Solution to Backup all Hyper-V
over the San Network. Symantec support Offhost ore ADBO for SQL or Exchange but
not Hyper-V. I am looking for a new good Backup Solution for this Problem. <o:p></o:p>

Setting Scope HyperV 2012 R2 What replaced ScopeOfResidence?

$

Basically, I want to know how to set the scope for a hyper-v vm in Server 2012 R2 so users see only the specific vm's assigned to them. I work at an academic institution, we intend to upgrade our 2008 R2 servers to 2012 R2 but before we can do that we need our vm creation script to work properly. In older editions that have the WMI v1 namespace it used to be to set the scope for a vm you did so by modifying Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData.ScopeOfResidence. In the WMI v2 namespace Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData has been removed and most of its features have been placed in Msvm_VirtualSystemSettingData. ScopeOfResidence however is not in there and I can't find it or anything that sounds the same in any of the virtual system classes. Below is the unedited portion of the old script I am having trouble converting to the v2 namespace. Someone please help, I need this working by the end of the month or I am going to have to abandon the server upgrade entirely.

# Set Scope!
$VM_Service = get-wmiobject -namespace root\virtualization Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService
$ListofVMs = get-wmiobject -namespace root\virtualization Msvm_ComputerSystem -filter  "ElementName <> Name "  | `
    where { $_.ElementName -like $vmName }
foreach ($VirtualMachine in $ListofVMs) {
        if ($VirtualMachine -ne $Null)
        {
        $VMGlobalSetting = get-wmiobject -namespace root\virtualization Msvm_VirtualSystemGlobalSettingData | where `
           { $_.ElementName -like "*$($VirtualMachine.ElementName)*" }

         $VMGlobalSetting.ScopeOfResidence = $scope

         $VM_Service.ModifyVirtualSystem($VirtualMachine.__PATH, $VMGlobalSetting.psbase.Gettext(1))

          }
Write-Host "Virtual Machine" $vmName "Added to Scope" $scope
}
# End of Set Scope

Converged Network 2012 R2, host, VMs inaccessible

I'm just building a new server (HP 360 G7 with the latest firmware, drivers I can find) with 2012 R2.

I'm having strange problems with the network, it works, then it stops withouth me doing anything. I created a team (connected to an Extreme Networks switch that has these four ports in trunk mode, all 4 VLANs are available on these ports), virtual switch, virtual networks using these commands:

New-NetLBFOTeam –Name ConvergedNetTeam –TeamMembers pNIC-300,pNIC-301,pNIC-400,pNIC-401,pNIC-901 –TeamingMode SwitchIndependent –LoadBalancingAlgorithm Dynamic -confirm:$false
Set-NetLbfoTeamMember -Name pNIC-901 -Team ConvergedNetTeam -AdministrativeMode Standby

New-VMSwitch "ConvergedNetSwitch" –NetAdapterName "ConvergedNetTeam" –AllowManagementOS 0 –MinimumBandwidthMode Weight
Set-VMSwitch "ConvergedNetSwitch" –DefaultFlowMinimumBandwidthWeight 50

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Management" -SwitchName "ConvergedNetSwitch"
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Management" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "LAN" -SwitchName "ConvergedNetSwitch"
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "LAN" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Cluster" -SwitchName "ConvergedNetSwitch"
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Cluster" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 10
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Live Migration" -SwitchName "ConvergedNetSwitch"
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Live Migration" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 40
Start-Sleep -s 15

New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (Management)" -IPAddress 10.10.0.67 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 10.10.0.1
Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (Management)" -ServerAddresses "10.10.0.47,10.10.0.53,192.168.2.51"
Set-NetIPInterface -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (LAN)" -dhcp Disabled -verbose
New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (Cluster)" -IPAddress 192.168.4.7 -PrefixLength 24
New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (Live Migration)" -IPAddress 192.168.5.7 -PrefixLength 24

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "Management" -Access -VlanId 150
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "LAN" -Access -VlanId 100
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "Cluster" -Access -VlanId 400
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "Live Migration" -Access -VlanId 5

The LAN virtual NIC was created since on of the VMs needs to be in VLAN 100. Are the steps above correct, please assist me.

Hello

Host is Windows Server 2012R2

Virtual Machine is Windows Server 2012R2

When running my virtual machine, It will flash very quickly every 2 or so minutes.  It happens very quickly, so I cannot read all of it.  But I did get a glimpse of "Reconnecting".

Virtual Desktop Collection Provisioning - Issue with Naming

$

Hi all,

I have created a Virtual Desktop (Pooled) Collection using Hyper-V in 2012 and an RD Connection Broker.

My question is pretty straight forward, though I cant seem to find an answer anywhere. If I add a machine to the Virtual Desktop Pool using Tasks > Add Virtual Desktop, and the job subsequently fails, I cant see an obvious way to clear/retry the job.

If I use a naming convention like RDP00, RDP01, RDP02 etc I have found that on subsequent jobs, the next computer name in the sequence (that would have been created in the previous failed job) is skipped, causing me to have machines that are not sequentially named.

This is kindve annoying, and I was hoping that there would be some way to delete/retry the job to add a Virtual Desktop.

Input would be much appreciated - It's very possible that I have simply missed something.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

Intel Pro1000PT /Hyper-V VM's Not connecting to network

We have a server with 4 Intel Pro1000PT nic cards in it.  Set up host (server 2012) and teamed nic cards.  Then added Hyper-V and after reboot - moved Server 2012 virtual machine to server.  VM would not connect or ping gateway.  No network connection no matter what I did.  Tried removing Hyper-V, team, rebooting, recreating etc.  No luck.

Co-worker removes Hyper-V and team, reboot, teams nic, and put IP address on IP4 network, subnet, etc address on it.  Then he installed Hyper-V which stripped address, but now virtual machine connects just fine.

Is this by design?  Are Intel Pro1000PT dual-port cards compatible with 2012R2 Hyper-V?  You do NOT put IP address on Virtual Switch do you???

Thanks for your help!  This is to be a production server and need to get it right.

PS - we do not run DHCP on this network - all IP's are static.

Hyper-V Error - Never Before Seen - Google Doesn't even know

Here's the Error

'VMName' failed to start worker process: no such interface supported (0x80004002)

I have no idea why this has occurred.. I'm away from home and this is on my home server... All VMs won't start... also any new VMs I create won't start... There's been no changes... I think there was a power outage though... I considered a windows update... but none have been installed at all....

I won't install any updates just in case as that may only compound the problems..

The only things in the event logs are the messages with the above error.. it doesn't explain further and there doesn't appear to be any extra messages which give more detail.

The OS is Server 2012 R2 just running Hyper-V

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trouble Coverting VMWare VM to Hyper V VHD using Virtual Machine Converter

$

I am trying to convert a VMware based VM (Server 2008 R2) to a Hyper V VM.  The Hyper V Server is 2012.  The problem is that when I create the SMB share, I get an error when trying to add Full Access permissions.  The Hyper V Server is by definition in a workgroup but all the instructions seem to based on Hyper V being a role in Windows Server and assume a domain configuration.

When I use the VMware plugin, I get the same error indicating that there are no write permissions on the SMB folder.  The help message suggests that the problem is that the two machines are in different domains and this should be addressed.

Is there a way to address this Workgoup issue in Hyper V Server 2012 where I can add the required write permissions?  Can I just use a location on the same machine as the source VM and and then manually copy from there?

I do not have SCVMM and I am aware that I could just rebuild the machines and port data over but that is onerous.
