TSClient Transfers Extremely Slow

$

Hello Community,

I have a Hyper-V instance installed on my Windows 8.1 host, and I am finding that transfers using TSClient (shared drives from the host on connect) are extremely bottlenecked.  I will get 30MB/s transfer rates via TSClient compared to ~300MB/s rates if I copy the same file over a network share.

I am wondering if this is a known issue and/or if I a overlooking something completely obvious. :)

Thank you for any assistance,

Michael

Backup Windows Server 2012 HyperV Failover Cluster's VM with Backup Exec 2012 V-Ray

Hi,

I have newly configure a hyper-v failover cluster that build up with two host (win server 2012) and 5 vm (win server 2012). When I try to use the backup exec 2012 v-ray (win server 2008) to backup these vm inside csv. I getting error that related to vss. Below is the backup exec error code and event viewer error code:

Backup Exec Error Code:

- Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on :"VRTSRV::\\cluster_name\HYPER-V?HA?VM\vm_name". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

V-79-10000-11230 - VSS Snapshot error. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot technology that you selected does not support snap technology for this volume. Select another snapshot technology, and then run the job again.

Event Viewer Error code in Hyper-V Host:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface.  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Operation:
   Gathering Writer Data

Context:
   Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}
   Writer Name: System Writer
   Writer Instance ID: {9c4082f1-950d-4df5-87b4-e67bf0f37754}

Does this issue related to the VSS or Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray unable to backup Hyper-V Cluster CSV volume? I had tried used window backup and restore to do a test backup, it was working fine to backup vm that in csv.

Anyone know what's wrong for my setting? I had log call to Symantec backup and they troubleshoot for my problem over 2 weeks but still no solution for me. Thanks if you guys can help me on this issue. Thanks.

Importing Hyper-V VM to Windows 8.1 Hyper-V from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Export gives error

Hi,

On Windows 8.1 Preview with running Hyper-V I can't import any more exported VM's from Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V export. It worked great on Windows 8. Of course I manage to use just VHD, and everything is working, but this is additional step, first to create VM.

Is it a Windows 8.1 Preview bug or expected behavior?

Best regards,

Zvonimir

Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

Hi all,

Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;

'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'

I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue it would seem some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the linehypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Host crashes when performing Live Migration

I have the following setup.

2x Dell M620 blades with 2x 10gbit connected to iSCSI storage presented as a CSV.

Im using Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 fully patched.

I can Quick migrate without any issues, but whenever i Live Migrate, especially when moving the same machine 2 times in a row, the host that im migrating from, crashes and doesnt come up by itself.

Is it by design that i cannot do two migrations quickly after each other?

After doing some additional troubleshooting, the issue is present if i do a migrate quicker than 1 minute after another, and the BSOD error is: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (mslbfoprovider.sys)

While I did the same configuration using SCVMM for my Windows 2012 HyperV clusters, the fabric was deployed from SCVMM and hence the team and the virtual switch was just one. In the similar way, How should I do this with out SCVMM ?

Hyper V Server 2012 R2 Install for on-line class december 11th

this is a full version according to the on-line class documentation. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64bit on my PC. will this overwrite or in any way cause issues with my PC functions under Windows 7 or is Hypver V Server 2012 r2 isolated just for the class? Just starting to learn about Virtual and wasn't sure about downloading this software to my PC.

Very large files after converting VHD to VHDX

Hi,

On a Windows Server 2012 R2 I'm using the GUI to convert my disks from VHD to VHDX.
All goes well but my 8 GB dynamic VHD file gets about 60 GB after conversion to VHDX!!

I've also tried PowerShell with or without the -Dynamic parameter.

I have a couple of VHD files that do get a couple of GB larger then the original VHD file.

I've read articles on the net where you get around 145 MB extra on the VHDX but mine is getting huge in difference.

Any ideas why this is?

Kind regards,
Bhavesh

Access for SAN using HBA

$

Dears,

I have my existing Windows 2012 with Hyper-V Role installed and configured, and I also have VMs with Path through Disks.

I am accessing my LUNs using HBA and Storage which are compatible with SAN Manager.

My Concern, that I am afraid to lost connectivity with LUNs after configuring SAN Manager (coz when I configure Virtual Network, the NIC become not usable for the Host).

So, I want to know the following:

  1. Does configure Virtual SAN Manager will make my hosts and VMs lost connectivity to SAN?
  2. Does configuring Virtual SAN Manager will make interruption for Hyper-V Host LUNs and VMs Path through LUNs?
  3. If, How Long this interruption will be?

Thanks

Why doesn't Hyper-V have a reboot button?

An idle but something that niggles me since moving from XenServer to Hyper-V. How come the console doesn't have a reboot button? It's got a restart but that's a nasty "reset button" thing and not a clean restart. Shirely, if it has a shutdown button and then a start button, it's feasible to have a reboot button?

Not a big thing. Maybe R2 ;-)

Cheers, Rob.

Updates on Hyper-V cluster

Hi Guys,

I've done a validation on one of our clusters here, and some of the updates are missing on a host. Which is no big deal, until I try and download them, and get told they're invalid!

I've double checked I've not done anything stupid, and have downloaded the correct ones for the OS (Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V SP1) and they all fail saying this update is not applicable, when they actually are! Any ideas on a valid download location for the following that I can use...?

KB2749655, KB2739159, KB2688338, KB2659262, KB2620712

Anyone else having issues shutting down VM's properly after windows update - stuck at it is now safe to turn off computer screen

$

Hello,

Anyone here tried shutting down any VM's recently on both windows 2012 or 2008 R2 that have guest OS as windows 2008 R2 or windows 7, even my windows 7 laptops and desktops are receiving it is now safe to turn off your computer screens when shutting down.

If in a VM guest its done from within the guest OS itself it shuts down properly but using command prompt or using the hyper-v administrator gui, the shutdown button shuts the guest os down but gets stuck at the "it is now safe to turn off your computer screen" and after 5 mins or so spits error that the vm failed to shut down properly. Only way to start the vm again is by clicking on the "Turn Off Icon" on the Gui... or right clicking the vm and using reset option.

I noticed these started happening last week after the dreaded Tuesday windows updates.

The heartbeat as expected shows lost communication message.

IF you guys have a hyper-v environment and few vms to test shutdowns on please try shutting them down, make sure your host and guest have all the updates from windows and see if they shutdown properly, will help me figure out what might be happening, nothing has changes in configuration so I am not sure why all the sudden this problem arisen. My backup scripts do not work because they cannot shutdown the vm's properly cause of this.... any help would be great.

Hyper-V over SMB 3 running slower than expected.

$

Hi,

Currently in the process of evaluating Server 2012 R2 with storage spaces/smb 3/ssd tiering etc...

My test setup is the following:

1x Server 2012 R2 with 2x SSD and 2x Sata drives in a virtual disk with 75GB SSD tier and 1000GB Sata Tier.  10GB write-back cache.  The virtual disk is shared as \\fs-dev\storage\

network for above is a dual port NIC teamed with then two virtual interfaces on two different vlans.

1x Windows 8.1 Pro with hyper-v role installed.  Single NIC with hyper-v switch attached and allowing management operating system to share enabled.

If I do a straight file copy from the file server to the workstation in either direction I max out the single NIC and get 110MB/s.  I can also see that the SMB 3 multi chanel is working as expected on the server and is load balancing across the two virtual NIC's

If I boot up a vm on the workstation with all its files on the remote server share.  The performance is considerably worse.  Sequential read writes are around the 60MB/s mark and random 4k read/write are ok, but certainly worse than expected.

I've bench marked the storage space directly on the server and can confirm it is easily capable of better performance that this.  All NIC's are 1Gbe

Note that both machines are at least quad core 3.6Ghz cpu's with 8GB ram so there should be no issues there.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot further or what might be the issue?

Hyper-V and FTP in HTML

I have FTP installed on my Hyper-V server. In my Web page I have the following:

<a href ftp://207.28.29.231>FTP to your Files</a>

Where 207.28.29.231 is the public IP address of my router. I have port forwarding turned on to point to my Server2008r2. However, my web server is actually in Hyper-V. Does that mean I have to port forward to my HyperV server instead of Server2008r2?

Hyper-V vSAN, NPIV, vHBA Query

Hi All,

I've got a quick question that I've not been able to find an answer to in relation to the use of Hyper-V (Server 2012) and the vSAN / NPIV functionality.

I've got several hosts which have generated the same WWNN (on two different clusters), I was expecting these to be uniquely generated and have seen articles saying they should be unique but nothing specifically saying how they are generated?

Has anyone else come across the above or know how these WWNN's are created?

Migration failed at migration destination: Received invalid or corrupted data

$

Hi,

I have had a problem for several days and cannot seem to solve this.

I cannot get SharedNothing Live Migration to work at all, not even with a brand new 4mb empty virtual machine. I am running Server 2012 Datacenter R2 Preview on a host and Hyper-V 2012 Server core on another. The datacenter is acting as an ADDS,DNS, DHCP server & Hyper-V manager.

I have setup the usual requirements for SharedNothing, Constrained delegation (for both machines) DHCP with dynamic DNS updates to the Active Directory Store. configured Forward and Reverse zones, the Roothint resolution, DHCP Server options (DNS Name, Router, etc). Currently the setup is Static IPv4 Datacenter with DHCP IPv4 for the Hyper-V Server OS. Matching virtual switches and all the other common guidelines provided by microsoft and other hyper-v users.

There is no clustering or fail-over settings defined. The AD DS groups for Administrator and the Computers are all correct. Name resolution and PING works to and from the Machines, so does Server Pool management.

I've tried different switches (physical), ensured all the hardware (storage etc) on the machines are healthy and have reloaded the server OS's several times while trying varying configurations to make the Live migration feature work. but whether the VM is 15gb or 5mb, the Migration just fails to successfully complete.

I always receive the same error message, with CredSPP, Kerebos, with any of the transfer options at all.

I spent the past few days looking over google to see if anybody has posted the same kind of error message to no avail.

I snapped a picture (will post it when the forum allows me to) of it and also will note I am getting an eventlog message (intermittently) which may also be related to my primary issue.

Error 21026 Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS

Virtual machine migration operation for 'LSERVERVM' failed at migration destination 'CONTROLLER'. (Virtual machine ID typical id string)

This above error message is directly related and I cant find any advice on how to troubleshoot it.

The below error message may also be related, however only seems to crop up in the event viewer under certain network configuration.(whether ipv6 is on or off)

Error 20406 Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to setup the listen socket for Virtual Machine migration connections for address '192.168.2.2':The requested address is not valid in its context. (0x80072741)

[x.x.2.2 is my destination IP]

I'm really struggling here guys, any advice is greatly appreciated, if you have any questions about my setup I will gladly answer them as soon as possible.

Server 2012 Hyper-V Host Not Responding

$

The issue has happened on 2 different hosts in the last two weeks, and we haven't been able to find out exactly what is causing this so I am hoping to get some help.

5 Node Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster.  Monitored using SCOM and also using VMM (2012 SP1).  In VMM we noticed that the server in question was showing as not responding, all the VM's were fine, and VMM shows that the WinRM service is not OK.  The service is running on the host, but the host cannot be RDP'd to, we can't login to the console, and we can't connect to the cluster via Cluster Manager because in both instances the host in question was the Cluster owner.  Our "solution" has been to shutdown the VMs on the host and then forcefully reset it, and after that everything is fine.  However, I am hoping to get to the bottom of what is going on.

This is the exact same issue as described HERE, but there isn't a solution given.  Here is a chronology of events that I gathered from the event logs.

From the logs you can tell that the issues started on 7/7/2013 at 5:38 PM

From Application Event Log:

Error 26001, Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.2012.Report.VPortUsageCollection

Basically happened every 30 minutes until 1:49AM on 7/9.  I rebooted the server around 11:45 PM that night.
