How to get a bootable vhd for a Linux on Hyper-V with two disks ?

$

Hi folks,

I am running a custom linux on my Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2. I initially configured one disk(4GB) and then I added one more hard disk of higher capacity (8GB). Now I got two vhd files with different sizes.

If I want to create a new linux VM (with two hard disks as original), with an existing vhd file, which one can I use?
I tried the first one, but it is not working as expected.

Is there any other way to get a bootable vhd file for a linux VM with two hard disks?

Any tools to make it?

Thanks in advance,

Saleem

Moving a VHD best practice

$

I have a VM with multiple VHDs. One of the VHDs must be moved to a different physical volume for performance reasons.  What is the best approach to moving the one VHD, not the entire VM to a different physical volume after shutting the VM down? Move the VHD to the new volume and change the drive path? Or, in the VM settings REMOVE the drive then reattach from the new location after moving the VHD?

Thanks in advance!

Windows Server 2012 R2 - HyperV Role Installation - An unexpected error occured

$

I am facing this strange issue with our brand new blade HP BL460c gen8 servers.

Its not happening on all. Mostly if we do it among the first steps after OS installation, HyperV role gets installed successfully.

Here is the usual steps I did

OS Installation, Network Configuration, Adding to domain

Patch updates - 8 updates which was listed on Windows Update got installed

Powerpath

Navisphere

Fail-over Cluster

HyperV

Suspecting the patches, I tried even remove all the windows patches which got installed. No luck.

I dont see anything apart from the same below message on the event viewer.

To confirm the server is fine, I just reinstalled one server and immediately after joining to the domain, Installed HyperV Role, which was successful.

Any clue?

Hyper-V for Test environment with internet but not LAN access.

$

This is what I thought would be a standard scenario, but the plethora of methods I have attempted to get my test environment access to the Internet but not my LAN/Domain have all failed.

The goal is a 4 VM test environment on one host where data can be moved from that host to the VMs and the VMs can access internet (to test that part of that for which they are the test environment).

I initially though I would build a subnet to this purpose with four NICs on the server (one for each VM) and two NICs on the host (one for LAN/Domain connection, and one for VM connection, such as data transfer).

The more I read, the more it sounded like I had over complicated matters, so I tried instead to bypass the 4 NIC subnet method, and use private virtual network connected to one of the server NICs and leave the other in its' standard LAN configuration, then use RRAS as a NAT router.

I have found it easy to get the four VMs talking to one another, but not get them a route to the internet.

So folly aside, what is the best way to have my test environment of 4 virtual machines on this host, be able to get data from the host, and access the internet, but not interfere with any LAN/Domain activity?

Open for suggestions and eager for the assistance-

Sincerely,

Stuart

Move Virtual Machine Storage stuck "Loading" CSVs

As I understand it the "Move Virtual Machine Storage" screen is supposed to enumerate the CSVs available to the cluster in the bottom left portion of the window.  It seems to be stuck on a "Loading..." status and never shows the CSVs.  Also, when I try the "Add Share" button and type in a share to use it doesn't do anything.  Thoughts?

Storage issues during live clone in Server 2012 R2

We just set up a new 2012 R2 cluster and we are having troubles with live cloning. I have seen it work in our environment but usually it fails.

We get this error in our cluster events:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume8' ('Volume8') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

and the clone fails with:

Error (2916)

WinRM: URL: [http://ServerPath], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [GetError], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/microsoft/bits/BitsClientJob?JobId={DC6D9530-26F1-4F95-A1AB-0197B1406F98}]

Not found (404) (0x80190194)

The storage is a Dell EqualLogic PS6500 and its connected to two S55 Force 10 48 port switches.  The client side of the network is hooked to two Cisco 2960G 48 port switches.

I can't find any information on error c0000435.  Has anyone head of this issue?

Virtual Machines loose network connectivity in Windows 2012 Hyper-V Cluster

Running a two node Hyper V cluster on Windows 2012. One of the nodes all the virtual machines stopped responding to network connections. Checking thru Hyper-V manager showed all nodes running correctly and no errors on the VMs.

Moving the VMs to the second node caused network issues to go away, all nodes working correctly. Moving a VM back to the first node caused its network to drop again. Rebooted first Hyper-V node and then moved VM back. Everything working.

No errors in the Hyper-V node or VM. VirtualNIC did not show any disconnects or errors. All very strange.

Servers are Dell 710 PowerEdge using Broadcom NetXtreme NICs.

Hyper-V causing "stuttering" on Windows 8 Pro

When I'm running a Hyper-V VM (which I run most of the time) that is set to use 8GB of RAM, occasionally my mouse will experience "stuttering" or lag.  It can happen multiple times in a row, and sometimes is spaced out over hours.

Machine specifications:

Windows 8 Pro

i7-2500

16GB RAM

nVidia GeForce 470GTX

Hyper-V VM is on a secondary SATA drive that is only used for Hyper-V

Hyper-V VM is using 8GB fixed (another one is using 8GB min, 12GB max -- not running at the same time of course) with 2 vCPUs and two VHDX's, fixed.

Problem installing Hyper-V Integration Services.

Hi,

I have a problem installing Hyper-V Integration Services.

The Host OS in Win2k8 (fully Windows Update'd).

I have a guest machine which is also Win2k8 (also updated).

When I attempt to install Integration Services I receive a message:
A previous installation of Hyper-V integration services has been detected. Click OK to upgrade tor repair this installation.

I click OK and it runs. Then I receive a message:
The Hyper-V integration services have been successfully installed.

I look in Programs & Feature - there is nothing there.

When I reboot, Network Devices are not detected, there is no mouse integration.

What can I do to get them installed?

NOTE: I configured the machine as a VM using VPC. I uninstalled the VPC-Extensions. Then moved the VHD to my Hyper-V server and created a new Hyper-V machine using the VHD. Maybe this is the problem?

Hi I have a server with 2012 R2 and Hyper-V is installed. I have set my VM's up and everything on the server is working perfectly. I installed the hyper-v role on my Win 7 x64 machine and it will not connect to my server. I ended up calling in to microsoft and they have determined it's a bug. I really need a work around does anyone know of a work around?

Thanks,

Configuring NAT in a Hyper-V setup

$

Hey Guys,

Here's the deal. I want to be able to basically share the internet connection on the REASRV1 virtual machine with the internal virtual switch. I know i can do this by just sharing the connection, but that's not what you would do in a professional setup. I've got my current configuration in the image below.

Add https:// in front of the link and insert a / on each space

dl.dropboxusercontent.com u 15388202 NAT%20Troubleshooting.bmp
I want Client1 to be able to connect to the network that the host and REASRV1 are connected to. I can easily ping 10.0.0.1 from Client1, as it is in the same subnet and network address, but when i want to ping for instance the DNS server on my physical network instead of the virtual, the NAT router does not forward my request and gives the message "Host Unreachable".

Is there something wrong with the NAT configuration, or do I need to rework the whole network structure or something?

MIgration

Hello,

I have two HyperVR2 servers in my Vancouver office called OLD and NEW.  I have SCVMMR2 in my Toronto office.  i want to migrate VMs from my OLD server to my NEW server using the SCVMMR2 migrate operation.

When I initiate the migrate operation from the SCVMMR2 console does the VM transfer between the OLD and NEW server or does the VM transfer between the OLD, SCVMMR2 then NEW server?

I am asking the question because I do not want to transfer my large VMs through the Toronto server, rather directly to the NEW Vancouver server.

Could someone please confirm how the migration operation works with SCVMMR2 and advise if the VMs migrate between Hosts or through the SCVMMR2 server?

Thanks in advance,

Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - Linux Virtual Machine stuck in Saved-State

$

Good day

We have multiple Hyper-V (Server 2012) servers being backed-up by Data Protection Manager (2012 SP1). On a weekly basis we find Linux virtual machines that enters a saving/saved state and not being able to resume from there.

I know VSS will save any non-vssaware guest os to take the snapshot, but 40% of the time it gets stuck in this state and the only resolution is to reboot the Hyper-V server, which isn't a solution really.

During the saved-state, I noticed the backup that's 'in progress' on DPM - isn't transferring any data. I'm also unable to cancel the backup. I then need to stop DPM Service.

Once the DPM service has been stopped, I can at least kill the vmms.exe process and get the virtual machine into a 'stop' state - but I still can't start it since it only goes up to 10% and stays there...

I cannot find any logs accept the daily Hyper-V logs, the same on DPM. I have managed to find only two entries this week during a saved-state issue:

(2012 R2) Virtual Switch issues with Static IP

$

I have built 2 new servers ready for a cluster (Server 2012 R2), both have 2 NIC ports built in plus PCI quad port 1Gb NIC's in them. 2 standard NIC ports are disabled.

Quad port NIC's teamed in Windows. Created a virtual switch for each server using the team. Cisco switches configured correctly for teaming.

Seems to work ok with DHCP, as soon as I set Static IP on the vSwitch loses network connectivity. Says unknown network and doesn't detect Domain, can't connect to it via RDP.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm trying to create an External Virtual Switch for WiFi connection.  If I create the switch, Hyper-V process the request then as soon as it finish the system blue screens.

I've look through the Hyper-V Event Viewer logs but cannot see any reference to successfully created or otherwise...  The driver appears to be up to date.

I've upgraded to 8.1 from 8 a couple of months back, this is the first time I've tried to create a new Vitual Switch on 8.1..

Any ideas - I'm very stuck!!

Thanks,

Tim

Thank you for you time folks!

Cannot Start Virtual Server - Not enough memory (even though there is)

Hi Everyone,

I have a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V SP1.  The host machine has 16 GB of RAM.  I want to run 3 servers at 4GB of RAM each.  This was the configuration I had before upgrading to R2 from Windows Server 2008.  It worked fine.

However, after upgrading, I can turn on two of the machines with 4 GB and the other must be turned on with 3 GB or less to start.  4 GB gives me an exception and says that it cannot initialize the virtual machine because there isn't enough memory.

When I look at Resource Monitor, I see 6.5 GB free.  If I calculate properly, after starting this virutal machine, I should have 2.5 GB of RAM left.

On a similar note, I have 2 other Hosts with the same configuration and I the total load of my virutal Machines on those Hosts are 15 GB, leaving on 1 GB free and it works with no problem.

Update:

Strangely, if I drop the VM to 3 GB of RAM and start it, I have Server 1 (4GB) + Server 2 (4GB) plus Server 3 (3GB) and can start a 4th server with 2 GB.

So:  3 x 4GB = 12 GB total will not turn on at one time, but

2x4 GB + 3 GB + 2GB = 13 GB WILL boot properly.  UGH!

Hi,

I recently installed Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2012.

Server I3, 8GB ram, 500 gb Hd, On board Realtech 1 gb NIC card.

using Microsoft VHD of Windows Server 2008, I installed New Virtual Machine.

Initially I was able to type using exiting Keyboard and Mouse, but VM NIC card could not communicate with Host. After searching internet, I got info to installWindows Server 2008 SP2 on VM. Which I did.

Now I am unable to use Mouse, on VM it says "Mouse Input not Captured". I did Action - Insert Integration Service Setup disk more than 3 time, Rebooted VM and Host, but problem now i can use Mouse and NIC card.

Pl. Help. I tried a lot even uninstalling/ reinstalling Hyper-V Server Role.

TSClient Transfers Extremely Slow

Hello Community,

I have a Hyper-V instance installed on my Windows 8.1 host, and I am finding that transfers using TSClient (shared drives from the host on connect) are extremely bottlenecked.  I will get 30MB/s transfer rates via TSClient compared to ~300MB/s rates if I copy the same file over a network share.

I am wondering if this is a known issue and/or if I a overlooking something completely obvious. :)

Thank you for any assistance,

Michael

Hyper-V in AD

I installed a Hyper-V server core and a Win8 PC.

I found both of the machines have to join the AD in order to let the Win8 PC to run the management tools to manage the Hyper-V core. In compare with the ESXi, I can manage the server with a Win7 PC w/ vSphere Client installed.

Is there any way I can manage the Hyper-V Core without required to join the AD??

Onboard Intel NIC does not work with Hyper-V Server R2

I just picked up a new Intel DH67BL 1155 board and am sorry to report that it's onboard NIC, an Intel 82579V is not recognized by Hyper-V Server R2. I tried various methods to install the latest driver and it just wasn't recognized. It seems others have had similar problems with other onboard NICs, despite having Windows Server 2008 x64 R2 drivers available. I'm not at all sure about the difference between the Server Core and normal drivers, but I would think they should all work.

I'm going to pick up a dedicated network card for now. ESXi doesn't recognize the NIC either and I'd like to try out both platforms, especially since VMware just added USB passthrough support.
