Hyper-V 2012 replica giving timeouts

0
0

We have two Hyper-V clusters in two separate datacenters. These datacenters are connected with a 100 Mbit/s redundant connection. Redundancies is achieved with spanning tree and the two sites share the same private IP range. In both datacenters are two domain controllers in the same domain. We use Hyper-V replica to replicate about 50 VM's to the secondary datacenter. We use the primary datacenter as our production environment and the secondary datacenter as our failover location, backup location and test environment. When everything was working and all the servers were being replicated the bandwidth that was used over the WAN connection was about 10 - 15 Mbit/s. We use http for replication.

After a failure, which was caused by a rebooting Hyper-V host (wrong configured automated update settings) several VM's stopped with their replication. After that incident I could not get the replication working properly. I get timeouts errors and other error messages indicating that there is no connection at that moment. The replication works but not all the time. Replication status are going to warning when more than 20% of the replication cycles are missed. Eventually we even see a status of critical on several VM's. After that we have to resume the replication manually.

I have the feeling that this is caused by the limited amount of bandwidth that is available. I had to do a complete new initial replication for some servers because these servers would no longer resume replication after a manual resume command. Even the resynchronization command did not work, so I had to stop the replication and start again. The problem is that the initial replication uses all the available bandwidth and I have the feeling that there is not enough bandwidth left for the regular replication of the other VM's and that this is causing the timeouts. I am however not sure about this theory. Is it possible that initial replications drain so much bandwidth that regular replications are getting timeouts or is there a mechanism that prevents this. Are there possible other causes of these problems?

below you see the error messages that I frequently get. I get these errors on VM's with a normal replication status as well as VM's with a warning status or a critical status.

Hi,

we want to implement a replica of hyper-v cluster

We have cluster 2012 contain 6 nodes windows 2012 core

and another server has enough storage we want to configure it as a replica server for the above cluster ,

My question is  : Can I configure this senario (Cluster of 6 Nodes replicate to the same replica server )and  doesn't the replica failed due to live migration ?

Kernel Panic after importing Linux VM

0
0

I'm running a VM with Red Hat 5.7 and lastest available LIS drivers installed virtualized on Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1.

I'm migrating to Hyper-V 2012 R2 and i've made an export of this VM with success and imported it into the new hypervisor.

When i start the vm, i get an kernel panic error, saying this:

unable to access resume device (LABEL=SWAP=hda3)

could not find filesystem '/dev/root'

If i start the vm in Hyper-V 2008 R2, it works like a charm.

Any help will be welcome.

Hyper-V 2012: Dynamic Memory Masking in Guest?

0
0

Hi All,

Not new to virtualisation, however am pretty green to Hyper-V and liking the look of it so far.

Dynamic memory looks awesome, however I do see some "education" issues arising from the way memory is reported inside the guest. With VMware (where my background is) it doesn't matter how much memory is reclaimed, inside the guest this is always reported as the amount you specify for the guest. This appears to be different with Hyper-V dynamic memory where;

a) Memory is hot added as required up to the configured maximum which is reflected in task manager, perfmon, etc.

b) if a guest startup memory is configured to more that what it needs, then when memory is reclaimed task manager, perfmon, etc inside the guest show you are using more memory than what you actually are.

The issue I see senario A producing is that VM owners will see their server has less memory than what they have ordered and won't understand that memory will be hot added as needed, and also that programs that check for available ram before actually requesting it will throw errors (install of SCOM 2012 for instance). The only way I see getting around this while still using Dynamic Memory is to up the startup ram to be equal to the maximum ram, however this produces senario B where a guest appears to be using a lot more ram than it is once the reclaimation process takes place.

Long story short, use of Dynamic Memory effectively breaks the historic method of measuring memory utilsation. Is there a way to mask the back end Dynamic Memory activity for the guest ? If not, then is there a way I can show VM owners to effectively measure their memory utilisation in regard to consumed as a percentage of the maximum?

I really hope there is something I am missing here, as otherwise I see Dynamic Memory being a real hard sell to our business units.

Hyper-V VM Reboots Weekly with thousand "The IO operation at logical block address for disk 2 was retried" Errors

0

I've got a VM running Exchange 2013 that reboots almost weekly.

Each time after the reboot occurs I login and notice thousands of errors that say:

The IO operation at logical block address xxxxxx for Disk 2 was retried.

So many of these errors that the event viewer truncates.

Any ideas on how I can get to the bottom of this?  My VM host is fine.

Thanks, Luke Pickard

Can't access network computers from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

I have a Hyper-V Server (call it Server-X) that can be accessed from all computers on my domain network. However, I cannot access any domain computers or NAS drives from Server-X. I can ping the resource by IP address from Server-X, but I cannot access by name (i.e. \\NAS\Public or \\Server-Z\c$).

Note as stated above... I do not have this problem from within any of the Hyper-V servers or physical workstations on my network.

Thoughts appreciated!

Thanks.

VMs in private network not getting IPs

Hi,

I've installed Hyper-V on Win 8 machine and made 2 VMs with v-network adapter set to private but both are getting invalid IP's (169.x.x.x).  I do not want to access the internet, I just want to have the two VM's communicate with each other. I've tried enabling VLAN ID and setting each ID uniquely but nothing changed.

Should I have something that will act as my DHCP server or is it just a check box I missed?

Edit: So I've took an old router and connected may computer to it via LAN to use to use it as a DHCP server. I've set the V-network adapter as external and defined my wired nic as the network adapter to be used. I've restarted the VMs, Hyper-V service and the computer itself. Sadly, it still doesn't work.

How to perform routing among Hyper-V INTERNAL networks?

0
0

Hello everyone,

Using Hyper-V Server (whether 2008/2012) I've to create this multi subnet network to simulate a real World dispersed network. I plan to have following networks (HQ-10-1-1-x, STATE-192-168-1-x, DISTRICT-172-168-1-x) for which I'll create INTERNAL Hyper-V virtual switches. Please shed light how routing can be done among these INTERNAL networks.

Hyper-V Host NICs
==============
NIC1 & NIC2 are physical interface connected to DSL modem/router. DSL modem/router's NIC: 131.107.0.254/24.

NIC1: Management NIC
IP:    131.107.0.100/24
DG:  131.107.0.254
NS1:131.107.0.254

As per Microsoft practice NIC1 is only for Hyper-V management.

NIC2: Data NIC
IP:    131.107.0.200/24
DG:  131.107.0.254
NS1:131.107.0.254

NIC2 can be used to connect VMs to physical network but that's not real objective.

Hyper-V Virtual Switches
---------------------------
vSwitch1 :HQ-10-1-1-x
Type: INTERNAL

Hyper-V's vNIC connected to this switch:
IP:     10.1.1.200/24

vSwitch2 :STATE-192-168-1-x
Type: INTERNAL

Hyper-V's vNIC connected to this switch:
IP:     192.168.1.200/24

vSwitch3 :DISTRICT-172-168-1-x
Type: INTERNAL

Hyper-V's vNIC connected to this switch:
IP:     172.168.1.200/24

Organization scenario:
=============+

vOrg has physical presence at these sites, with each site having single network.

HQ Site:
------------
Site will have AD DC/ DNS server. Server has following TCP/IP Settings:

vNIC1:  10.1.1.254/24        connected to vSwitch1 :HQ-10-1-1-x
vNIC2:  131.107.1.254/24 connected to vSwitch2 :STATE-192-168-1-x
vNIC3:  192.168.1.254/24 connected to vSwitch3 :DISTRICT-172-168-1-x

STATE Site:
-----------------
Site will have single member server
vNIC1: 192.168.1.100/24 connected to vSwitch2 :STATE-192-168-1-x

DISTRICT Site:
--------------------
Site will have single member server
vNIC1: 172.

168.1.100/24 connected to vSwitch3 :DISTRICT-172-168-1-x

 Objective:

Servers at STATE and DISTRICT sites needs to be able to join domain at HQ site and talk to each other.

Hyper-v Cluster without Shared SAN storage

Hi Team,

Our Envorinment consist of VMware and Hyper-v Both . we have two project which will run on Virtual platform.

we dont have SAN storage since vmware team suggested us that we can achieve HA /VMotion without having SAN storage by using their STorage appliance Feature. It looks like we can achieve VMware HA without having SA Storage which is a great New.

do we have same kind of feature available in Hyper-v 2012 R2 also.

We have six server with all 900 GB 6 SAS disk . we will utilize three for VMware & three for Hyper-v .

Please let me know if we have production supported Storage Appliance kind of feature in Hyper-v also.

Thanks

Unable to Import the Course for Server 2012  :- 410B

The HVS Document Says, you will have to Use Server 2008 r2 as Base machine, but i would like to Use Server 2012.

Can we import the virtual machine Created by MOCL for Server 2008 in Server 2012.

While i try to Import the Machine it Gives an Error,

Virtual Machine Not Found. / Unable to Locate Virtual Machine.

If I Follow the Same Steps in Server 2008 , It Succesfully import the machine.

Live Migration fails when host management network fails

0
0

Hi All,

We're running Hyper-V R2 clusters with the following network config,

Host management (enabled for cluster communication) - single NIC (integrated adapter)

CSV and heartbeat - single NIC (integrated adapter)

Live migration (not enabled for cluster communication) - single NIC (add on)

VM production network - 2 teamed NICs (integrated and add on port)

Here's the situation, when we had the host management NIC lose network connectivity and we tried to move running VMs to the other nodes, Live migration and quick migration wouldn't work 'says RPC server unavailable'. The Live migration NIC is chosen as the first preferred network with the CSV and heartbeat as the second preferred. Host management NIC isn't enabled for live migration. Live migration only worked once we got the host management network back online.

My questions,

Why is host management network connectivity needed for live migration to work? looks like the source and destination nodes need domain access (authentication?) for live migration to work.

Which network should be the second preferred network for Live migration? As far as I know, private networks are preferred. What is the recommendation here.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role - 2003 VM's hang on shut down or restart

Hi

I have a standalone 2012 R2 with the Hyper-V role installed.  It hosts a number of VM's of varying operating systems, but I have a problem with two 2003 R2 SP2 virtual servers.  Both of them are unable to restart or shut down properly, they stop responding at the grey screen after the shutting down dialog box has disappeared.  Both have up to date integration services installed.  Both will require a turn off or reset to bring the VM to a working state.  There is no difference between initiating the reboot from inside the VM OS or from the Hyper-V console, in both cases the same issue occurs.  No relevant errors are noted in the event logs of the VM (last event is the event log service stopping) or in the logs on the Hyper-V host. Other VM's (e.g. 2008 R2) have no problems restarting or shutting down.

I am wondering if this is another "feature" of the new R2 release?

Move a VM created in Hyper-V 2012 to a Hyper-V 2008R2 Server

Hi Guys

I'm trying to move an Exchange 2010 server I created in Hyper-V 2012 to a Hyper-V 2008R2 Server. The files are in VHD format and I re-created the VM on the 2008R2 server and did not do an Export-Import.

Initially the Server would start up fine but I could not get the network card to work at all and the Disk Manager on the server would not display the drives.

I then re-inserted the Integration Services disc and it re-applied all the drivers. Now after restarting the server Windows just gets stuck on Preparing to configure windows and doesn't go any further.

Any ideas?

Enabling Bitlocker on HyperV server after VM's in use

Hi, I cannot seem to find a good answer to this.

I have Windows Server 2012 R2 installed on a new server. I have enabled HyperV on the server and already have 3 VM's running on it, including an Exchange 2013 server.

Can I enable Bitlocker on the HyperV server while there are already VHDX's on the data drive?

What would be the best way to enable HyperV in this scenario?

Thanks for reading

I have a newly installed Windows Server 2012 R2 running the Hyper-v role, the only role it is using.

I have created a new Generation 2 guest VM, Windows Server 2012 R2 std, the only VM and set 'Automatic Stop Action' to 'Shutdown the guest operating system'

Host:

Dell 2950 Dual processor, 8 core, 32Gb RAM

Info:

The 'Hyper-v Guest Shutdown Service' is running in the VM.

VM will shutdown using hyper-v manager.

Problem:

Shutdown the host from the shutdown dialogue and the VM is turned off and not shutdown!

Any ideas please?

Starting a VM while Backup runs...

Hi,

I just discovered that I cannot start (from stopped or saved state) a Hyper-v- VM while Windows Backup is doing his job.

Do I realy have to wait (can be long) that backup finishes? Is there another solution?

Isn't VSS supposed to help with this kind of issues?

Any help?

Thanks.

Thomas.
