Hyper-V - 'Operating system shutdown' not functioning on Windows Server 2012 R2

$

I have a newly installed Windows Server 2012 R2 running the Hyper-v role, the only role it is using.

I have created a new Generation 2 guest VM, Windows Server 2012 R2 std, the only VM and set 'Automatic Stop Action' to 'Shutdown the guest operating system'

Host:

Dell 2950 Dual processor, 8 core, 32Gb RAM

Info:

The 'Hyper-v Guest Shutdown Service' is running in the VM.

VM will shutdown using hyper-v manager.

Problem:

Shutdown the host from the shutdown dialogue and the VM is turned off and not shutdown!

Any ideas please?

swarms of servers

Blade servers have been popular for a long time, some shops have racks and racks of them.

What tools for Windows Hyper-V use and a giant swarm of virtual machines would be best to aid the tech to find and replace the dead blades and disks in the storage servers.

I am aware that Hyper-V can handle up to around 1000 virtual machines when I inquired about Hyper-V vs IBM's server

Hi,

I'm having frequent crashes (1 per week) on a Windows 2012 Hyper-V server.

Server: Lenovo TS430 0441GU  -- Brand new server (around 2 months old right now)

Storage: RAID 10

RAID Controller: LSI MR9240-8i SCSI

No Cluster. Workgroup member. Running w/o the GUI. It's a full Windows 2012 Standard with Hyper-V as only role and 2 Windows 2012 Std VMs on top of it.

Here's one memory dump file:

https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=E4577B4064C0496B!1518&authkey=!AIqSAQT_GR3qd-0&ithint=file%2c.DMP

Here's an analysis is that dump file:

I'm wondering if my storage system has any problems because:

1) I'm getting this messages on the System event log:

The description for Event ID 56 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

SCSI
000000

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

2) Also...

The IO operation at logical block address 800 for Disk 3 was retried.

(I have 2 USB external drives plugged in and I don't know how to identifiy the disks using the \Device\Harddisk#\... notation. The message could refer to those external drives. According to diskpart, my disks are 0, 1, 2  though where 0 is my system RAIDed volumen; and 1 and 2 are the USB drives)

3) I tried updating the LSI firmware yesterday and it would go to the 70% and then the server crashed. I tried 2 times. Same behavior.

The MegaCli64 command doesn't report any issues with the controller nor with the disks. That's why I'm not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hyper-V 2012 Live Migration dropping packets and causing all guests to drop packets.

$

Heres the run down - I have Hyper-V 2012 Server configured on a 4 node cluster with 1GB iSCSI storage and NIC team with 4 physical ports and a vNIC created for each MGMT, LM and CSV.

The issue I had was that during a live migration, of only 1 guest, it would get to the 50% range and start dropping packets until a little after it had finished migrating, so around 10 pings. But not only was the guest that was migrating dropping packets, all the other guests on the source host would also drop packets, about 5-6 pings, during the live migration of that single guest.

I read thread after thread, rechecked all the configurations (I was positive it was working perfectly prior to migrating all my guests from 2008R2) but I couldn't find anything definitive.

Just the other day I added another host to this 4 node cluster to bring it up to 5. Everything was configured correctly and when I added the host, all was hunky dory. The Cluster Validation was fine and all looked good, until I moved a test VM onto the host and i found that the guest had zero connectivity to the LAN.

Again, went through everything, all seemed to be ok so I decided to rebuild the NIC team which all the vNIC sit on - After I did that, voila, it worked fine and the interesting part was when I moved a couple of test VM's onto the the new node, I wanted to test the live migration times, and wouldn't you know, the issue with the dropping packets during an LM didn't occur (only 2 pings dropped at the end of the LM as per normal) the other VM sitting on the host didn't drop any packets at all.

So it appears the issue was the NIC team, I didn't want to have to rebuild all the NIC Teams on all the hosts as this would require a fair bit of downtime, so instead I opted for testing the NVSPBIND tool (NVSPBIND Home) to unbind the vms_pp protocol and then re-bind it. It worked.

Effectively all I had to do was run the following command

nvspbind /u VM_Team     (VM_Team is the name of the NIC team I have)

nvspbind /r VM_Team

The above commands will drop all network communications, I suggest moving all guest's of the host you are doing this to and also running it via iLO/iDRAC etc.

After this, LM was working perfectly again.

The only issue I still have is that I don't know why it happened or what caused it.

Anyway - Just thought I'd share as it was a unique scenario which I wasn't able to find anything definitive on.

Hyper-V manager over VPN...

I have a working VPN connection. Everything works great, BUT the Hyper-V manager.

I get this error:

I have done this; without any result: http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2008/08/07/hyper-v-why-does-hyper-v-manager-not-always-work-over-vpn-connection-access-denied-or-rpc-server-unavailable-errors.aspx

The DHCP IP i get is 10.10.0.25 and the Hyper-V manager have IP 192.168.1.81 (its on a different network). All firewalls are disabled. Same problem with sstp and ikev2.

Windows 8.1 as client and Hyper-v CORE server.

Any ideas?

Pass-Through Drives on Hyper-V Server Core 2012

Hi everyone,

Been stuck on this one for a few days, having an issue with Pass-Through of an external USB HDD on Hyper-V Core 2012.

Normally I would make the disk offline in the host and add the HDD as an SCSI Hard Disk via Hyper-V Manager manager MMC.

However I have taken all the above steps as per usual, the disk is listed as offline in the Hyper-V core (Diskpart list disk) and I am unable to add the drive. The option to add a physical disk is grayed out in the Managment Console.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my first experience with Hyper-V Host 2K12 so I'm not sure if I'm missing a step.

Cheers,
Anthony

Hyper-V 2012 R2 guests aren't shutdown properly on host shutdown

I have installed a new System based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard RTM (german)

So the Host is running Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V Role.
Then I have installed a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard as guest, which is running fine, except the integrating Services.
(Generation 2, dynamic memory)

The guest is not shutted down, when I shutdown the host, even when configured to do so (shutdown guest).
So the Hyper-V guest is just powered off, and I will get a power off warning in the guests eventviewer on the next start.

As the guest is Windows Server 2012 R2, the Integration Service can't be installed, as they are installed automatically. Also the Services seems to be up and running on the guest.

When connecting the guest from the Hyper-V console, the shutdown button from the console is working.
Also the shutdown command from inside the Hyper-V Manager works correct.

So what I'm missing?

Hyper-V or WSRM (or both)?

$

We've just built a new Server 2012 (not R2) to run Hyper-V. This server also runs other applications, and I don't want these apps restricting Hyper-V performance, so I want to use WSRM to manage this. I've used WSRM in 2008R2, and it works fine for what I need, but in 2012 WSRM shows as 'Depreciated'. Even in this case though, I assume WSRM can be installed, but does it co-exist well with Hyper-V, or should I be using Hyper-V to manage resources?

I think WSRM has been pulled completely in 2012 R2, so this is the end of the line for it, but if not Hyper-V, what should I be using now to manage resources?

Experts !

Windows 2012 R2 Cluster.

2 Physical NICs dedicated for Hyper-V data traffic. These two NICs are used to create a team using Windows teaming (Switch Independent + HyperV Port) and this teamed interface is used for HyperV Virtual Switch.

While I did the same configuration using SCVMM for my Windows 2012 HyperV clusters, the fabric was deployed from SCVMM and hence the team and the virtual switch was just one. In the similar way, How should I do this with out SCVMM ?

Hi

I am trying to V2V some servers. I know I need to run the Analyzer so I am running MBCA 2.0 on a 32 bit Server 2003 R2 (ent) virtual server
I get a message "No required update or hotfix information exists for servername"
Does this mean the server is ok to V2V or does it mean something else?
The message is listed under Noncompliant

Erractic network connectivity on host machine

Hi there,

I have a Windows 2012 Server Host running for development purposes.  It is running >10 VMs.  Due to the cabling and safety requirements in the office I am using a wireless adapter to connect to our network, no physical cabling comes into the server.

Network connectivity has always been erractic on this host.  When using a browser, every 2nd page download fails with a "This page can't be displayed" message.  If you hit ENTER again the page will load.  I have always put up with this as I put it down to the "jazzy" network config I have using a wireless and HyperV switch.  Plus its a development box.

But a while ago I realised that all of the guests machines (running Server 2008) work perfectly.  They connect to the internet without an issue.

Can anyone assist please?

Hutton.

Dynamic(Switch Independent) NIC Teaming Mode Problem

$

Hi,

We are using Switch Independent Dynamic distribution NIC Teaming configuration on Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster. In the following graphs between 19:48 - 19:58 you can see clearly how dynamic NIC teaming mode badly affected the web servers response times.

We have encountered this problem on the different cluster nodes that use different NIC chipsets Intel or Broadcom and configured with dynamic NIC teaming for VM Network connection.

If we change the teaming mode as Hyper-V Port or remove NIC teaming for VM network as you can see from the graphic, response times are back to normal.

Any ideas?

Regards

32bit server 2003 p2v for upgrade

I need to upgrade 32bit server 2003 to server 2012 essentials (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/0d87db8a-a6d0-4adc-9dc2-d31fb7a2021b/32bit-server-2003-upgrade-path-to-2012-essentials?forum=winserver8setup&prof=required - this is the thread with details on setup and such)

Since it's 32bit moving to 64bit a direct path isn't available and I've seen mention of doing a p2v of the original server and installing the 2012 server in 'migrate' mode. It was suggested I check over here for steps to do a p2v of the original server, so here I am. Where do I start?

Network access not available until about 1 minute after hyper-v (VM) server boots

$

Hello,

We just set up a 2012 R2 Host server with about 6 VMs.   We are not sharing the nic between the host and the VM - separate nic.   It doesn't matter if we boot all VMs at the same time or just boot 1 VM with the others offline.  From the Hyper V management console, you can log into the VM but you can't ping locally or to 4.2.2.2 - not using DNS.   Takes a minute after the VM boots before you can ping internal or external.

There is no add on software on the nics - e.g. no firewall software on the physical machine or virtual nic.  We tried it with Windows firewall on and off - no difference.

We are using the latest drivers

We have all the latest patches from MS.

We tried a different switch - the physical machine does not have this issue - only the VMs exhibit this problem.  We tried this with both Broadcom and Intel nics - same issue.   Tried with a vanilla hyper v setup from scratch - same issue.

Access Device Manager in Hyper-V 2012

When I try accessing Hyper-V Server 2012's Device Manager via MMC I get "Make Sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and is running the "Plug and Play" and "Remote registry" services.

The Error Was: "The machine selected for remote communication is not available at this time.

I disabled the Hyper-V Firewall and followed the steps outlined here for "Allow remote access to the Plug and Play interface":
http://mikefrobbins.com/2010/12/02/enabling-remote-access-to-device-manager-on-server-core/

Any ideas?

The Hyper-V Manager works as-well-as the Policy Editor, just not Device Manager.

Hyper-V replication - device does not recognize the command 0x80070016

$

Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this.

We have 2 server 2012 (Datacenter) clusters running Hyper-v with replication enabled. The VM's all seems to replicate ok and run quite nicely but then they just stop replicating.

The error logs shows event ID 32086 - Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'VMNAME' due to a non-recoverable failure. (virtual machine GUID). Resum replication after correcting the failure.

followed closely by

event ID 32022 - Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'VMNAME': the device does not recognize the command. (0x80070016). (virtual machine ID GUID).

Replication is going over port 80 and the firewall is setup to allow this on all servers. The servers aren't in production use and are locally connected (so no latency issues).

All network communication is fine and the servers are all healthy.

I've seen a similar issue in the forum here but we are not getting the timeout error. This was resolved with a script, but surely we don't have to go back a step and start scripting fixes for whats supposedly core functionality?

Does anyone have any thoughts?
