Hi All,

I was using hyper-v Virtual Machine for WP8 emulator in visual studio 2013 but the VM stops working.

This is the error:

An error occurred while attempting to start the virtual Machine Management service on server ""

System: windows 8.1 pro.

Any suggestions?thanks!

Use Hyper-V on same server as WDS to PXE boot virtual machine to WDS to test imaging.(Take 2)

I asked this over in the Windows 7 Installation, setup and Deployment forum because I could not find a server forum that I thought fell under this topic though Hopefully in the Hyper-V forum i might get a answer.

I manage the desktop imaging and deployment system at work which currently consists of just WDS on a 2008 R2 64 server that i have administrative rights to, a special sub net on the network set aside for PXE booting which our imaging bench has drops on said subnet including a physical work PC at my station.

now on my PC i have windows 7 Enterprise x64 with a maxed out 8 GB of ram and Microsoft Virtual PC installed on it. I use VPC to PXE boot and test images.

The problem is I do a larger portion of the work on the imaging process remotely after the work day so as to not affect workers. This means i am using RDP to connect to the WDS server and my work PC. I have the fastest internet service i can buy from my provider; like 50 Mbits/s on wired (i'm using about 35 on a wireless connection) so no lag on anything remotely. However when i launch Virtual PC (i believe i have the 2007 version or what ever runs on 7) the mouse jumps all over the virtual screen makes it impossible to do anything.

So I thought why not add hyper-v as a role to the WDS server and just do all my image testing through that and just remote into one box every night instead of 2.

The problem is I can't figure out how or if it is even possible to have both WDS AND hyper-v on the same server and PXE boot to the WDS from a virtual machine in hyper-v?

Any Help or direction would be AMAZING

IMPOSSIBLE to Stop Windows 7 VM in Hyper-V!!!

I'm running HYPER-V on a Windows 2012 box. I have a problem that countless others have found - a Windows 7 VM refuses to shutdown and gets stuck in an everlasting STOPPING state. After several days of searching and research, I found a promising thread that suggests I use a LEGACY NIC in the VM. I was able to successfully remove the BROADCOM NIC from one VM and add a legacy nic. Works flawless now - albeit very slow in shutting down.

I've got one other VM however that I'd like to remove the Broadcom NIC from and add in a legacy NIC. Unfortunately, I CANNOT shut the VM down! No matter what I try, it sticks in the STOPPING state. I've tried the following:

1. Tried to SHUTDOWN straight from the OS interface (START button). Sticks in the STOPPING state.

2. Run PROCESSEXPLORER as administrator; attempt to kill the vmwp.exe process. Will not die - get ACCESS DENIED after 2nd attempt.

3. Tried killing the HYPER-V service and restarting. Does not stop VM.

4. Tried stopping the VM by going directly to the ACTION menu, and using TURN OFF. Sticks in the STOPPING state.

5. Tried rebooting Windows Server 2012 box after all of these actions and the VM shows as RUNNING after a server restart. If I open the VM after a restart it runs fine. I just can't shut it down!

I'd love to be able to change the NIC to a legacy NIC and see if this fixes the problem but for the life of me I CANNOT find a way to stop the VM so I can change settings! You'd think with the number of people exhibiting the problem Microsoft might try to address it - but to date I've not found a solution to STOP the VM so I can change settings. HELP!

Real World - 10 users - DC + HyperV on host

Scenario - 10 user or less environment.   Think small Dr./ Lawyer/ accounting firm - They need Active Directory and they need a terminal server because they have clients that remote.   The 'file server' is the terminal server.

Yes I have read, and coming from a much bigger environment I agree that having at least 2 physical boxes - one as the DC is the best (albeit much more expensive) way to handle it.

Currently have I have only Hyper-v Running on the host (NOT a domain member), with a DC guest and a 2nd guest as the terminal server/file services.   When I run the  'best practices' in Microsoft I get the dire warning to have a 2nd physical DC.

In all my reading though - I have come across only theory, and security reasons for not loading both HyperV and AD on the HOST, and then having 1 Guest (staying within the licensing).

With 10 users or less, and a host with 16gb, 10k drives is there a technical reason not to have the AD and the HyperV on the Host?

Where to get 2012R2 Linux integration services?

I am building a CentOS VM on HyperV 2012R2 and was wondering where I can find the 'correct' Linux Integration Services for 2012R2.

The only thing that google or Bing for that matter return is the Linux Integration Services 3.4 but the documentation does not list 2012R2 as a supported HyperV instance for the 3.4 release, which makes me expect that there must be newer release somewhere on the internet for 2012R2.

I'm running a Red Hat 6.4 on Hyper-V 2012 and  the VM's network tab shows me that the Integration Services is in a degraded state.

I know that the LIS are built-in on this Linux version, so can i desconsider this message? Is there a way to upgrade the version of this drivers?

According to the HyperV 2012R2 docs here CentOS 6.4 comes with the Linux Integration Services as part of the install, however when I do a minimal CentOS 6.4 install, I don't get dynamic memory, what am I missing?

I am trying to figure out how to resolve this issue. I have a server 2012r2 HyperV box and on there i have a guest that has an extra 25TB VHDX. If i boot the machine with the VHDX attached it just sits on the windows boot screen forever. It boots fine without the drive attached.

I found a work around to get it to boot. If i change the scsi chain location it boots however the disk is "offline" if i try to bring it online it throws Errors

Cannot join VM to domain hosted on a VM running the DC

I am setting up a new HyperV machine and am running with VM2 (running Windows MultiPoint Server) seeing the Active Directory services of VM2 (Server 2012 Essentials).  What I have found in trying to narrow down the problem are the following:

- the VMs can ping each other by host name

- the VMs can browse folder by host name

- I was able to get VM2 to join the domain, when I setup the virtual switch manager with an internal switch connection, I was not able to perform that task when they both had external access via NIC 1

- VM2 can sign in with network credentials, when using the Internal virtual switch, but not external

- both machines have Internet access, via the local LAN, when point to the external network (NIC1)

I am at a loss as to why VM2 cannot see the active directory service of VM1 when using the external settings of the HyperV switch.  I have recreated this switch port a view times.

Hi there,

I am having some issues with the Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have installed Hyper-V role, created a NIC team and then created a virtual switch. Event log show a MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver

How can i fix this?

Failed to create the backup of virtual machine

$

Hi to all sysadmins.

I'm no expert in MS Windows systems and i need help fixing backup issues.

We have two physical machines running  Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 as a Hyper-V host for three virtual machines each - domain controller, exchange server, file server, also running  Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1.

The problem is, since september weekly backups fail each time, on both machines.

Backup is configured as task scheduler job:

WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:e: -include:D:\vms -vssFull -quiet

Where E is backup disk (155GB free of 600GB), and D:\vms is location, where virtual hard disks and virtual machines are stored.

Backup used to work properly for several weeks. Windows Server Backup shows 24 number of copies, latest available from 28-09-2013.

I do have registered vss writer:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WindowsServerBackup\Application Support\{66841CD4-6DED-4F4B-8F17-FD23F8DDC3DE}]"Application Identifier"="Hyper-V"

Running vssadmin list writers gives me:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
Writer Instance Id: {91a24129-d7fe-4539-98e6-ed008610873a}
State: [5] Waiting for completion
Last error: Retryable error

Following errors occur in event viewer:

Event ID: 10107 (warning)

One or more physical disks are attached to virtual machine 'slx-lu-ex1'. Back up programs that use the Hyper-V VSS writer cannot back up volumes that are attached to virtual machines as physical disks. To avoid potential data loss, use another method to back up the data on the physical disks. If you restore the data on this virtual machine, make sure to check the data of the physical disk for integrity. (Virtual machine ID E7B82301-709C-4002-874C-C235DFB3C71A)

Event ID: 10102 (error)

Failed to create the backup of virtual machine 'slx-lu-fs1'. (Virtual machine ID B1CC6FA8-824D-4E95-AF06-27E3164182EA)

And finally Event ID 521

The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎11‎-‎09T22:30:11.707000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Also, i'm not the person who configured whole thing, so please advice if it is the proper way of making backups.

According to event ID  10107, machine  slx-lu-ex1 does have connected three phisical drives with exchange databases, logs and journaling, but there disks were mounted since beginning.

Move Virtual Machine Storage stuck "Loading" CSVs

As I understand it the "Move Virtual Machine Storage" screen is supposed to enumerate the CSVs available to the cluster in the bottom left portion of the window.  It seems to be stuck on a "Loading..." status and never shows the CSVs.  Also, when I try the "Add Share" button and type in a share to use it doesn't do anything.  Thoughts?

Hyper-V WIndows Server 2012 R2 event ID 157 Disk x has been surprise removed using windows backup

$

I've found a few postings on Event ID 157 for Windows 2012 R2, but no answers

We've upgraded from Server 2012 to 2012 R2. Hyper-V Role. Event ID 157 occurs when Windows Backup is running to backup Hyper-V machines. People have reported the same issue I am having. They have ID 157 occurring only during the Windows Backup process or if they use VSS Snapshots to backup hyper-v virtual machines.

I've found event ID 157 was designed for 2012 R2 Storage Groups when a disk is removed, so it seems like it is a bug showing up during Windows Backup.

One time (out of about 10 now - once each day) that this event was logged, a software RESET was sent to the LSI Mega Raid controller for half of the array and consistency checks were immediately done. I hope this does not happen again.

Everything worked fine before we moved from 2012 to 2012 R2. I've done a clean install and it still happens.

I've looked through the event logs on the virtual machines and we have one Windows 2008 Server running SQL 2008 R2 and it chokes through the entire backup process with hundreds of errors, starting with the SQL VSS Writer receiving a command that it does not understand. From then onward it says tables and data are corrupt, but the normal SQL maintenance job we have running for SQL Server backs up the databases and performs consistenacy checks without issues.

I've just remove the SQL Server from the Windows Backup and will see how it goes tonight.

In case this is related to the SQL Server, here's the error that is 1st logged as soon as the Windows Backup on the host begins:

Event ID 513, CAPI2, Error, Cruptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details: AddCoreCsiFiles: BeginFileEnumeratrion() failed.

System Error: Access is denied.

After that it freezes the databases, gives dozens of errors for each table, and then restores each table to normal operation.

The Guest SQL server appears to always be the 1st VM to get backed up, so I doubt this has anything to do with it, but thought I should provide as many details as possible, especially when everyone else has discovered it is VSS related and this guest is reporting VSS errors.

What do you think?
thanks
John
P.S. there are no hard drive errors, so running check disk will not help.

Unattended.xml file for Hyper-V images Syspreped

Hi,

I have a Hyper-V VM that is planned to create multiple machine instances that will be joined on a domain. I want to associate an unattended.xml file to automate the setup of VM that went through the Sysprep process.

The Sysprep and unattended setup documentation I have come across include automated setup that seems to addresses scenarios for Windows Distribution Services.  This has been incredibly frustrating because the tools suggested (Win AIK) seem directed towards preparing an installation (*.wim) for distribution to physical assets and not Hyper-V VMs.  Are there resources available specifically for Hyper-V instances?

Hyper-V and Server 2012 Project where 2 small biz are consolidating...Please HELP

This is for a small business in two different locations who recenltly merged and have a total of about 50-60 users.  I was brought on to consolidate and virtualize their physical servers. They have 2 - Server 2012 Servers with Hyper-V already installed. Currently they run a mix of Physical Small Business Server 2011 and Server 2003 and Server 2008. This is the new Hyper-V Server thats already in place.

2 Hyper-V Machines- Dell PowerEdge R520
Both have Server 2012 Enterprise with Hyper-V role installed
2 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2450 0 @ 2.10GHz
16GB RAM Each
4 x Broadcom NICs
4TB NAS

-Both Hyper-Vs are setup as Domain Controllers but have no VMs currently.

-Site One Currently: Server 2008 is DC and File and Application Server

-Site Two Curently: SMS 2011 is DC, Sharepoint, Application, and File Server

-Each site also has their own Exchange Servers which is going to be migrating to Office 365

-SQL Server 2008R2 and Terminal Services Server 2003 are also in place in one site.

-They also want to have DFS setup between the 2 Hyper-V Servers.

I am getting confused because, for one, I'm new at doing this and I have been reading so many docs and forums and watching videos that although there are best practices, there's a number of ways to go about this task. I guess I'm hoping for a little push in the right direction. My plan was to create a seperate VM in each Hyper-V for Application and File Server; Another for Sharepoint. I'm getting confused because where would AD go? All recommendations are that they should not be on the Hyper-V Server. Would that be a seperate VM or on a seperate physical box?  And is the hardware listed above for the Hyper-V sufficient? I'm concerned the Memory may not be sufficient. Also, we don't have System Center Installed, just Hyper-V Manager on the HyperV Servers. Is that enough to manage the small numbe rof VMs? Or do I need to console and manage from a seperate machine?

Sorry if this isn't enough information. I'm new to Hyper-V and virtualization. Thanks in advance and any help or guidance is appreciated.

Hyper-V replication - device does not recognize the command 0x80070016

Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this.

We have 2 server 2012 (Datacenter) clusters running Hyper-v with replication enabled. The VM's all seems to replicate ok and run quite nicely but then they just stop replicating.

The error logs shows event ID 32086 - Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'VMNAME' due to a non-recoverable failure. (virtual machine GUID). Resum replication after correcting the failure.

followed closely by

event ID 32022 - Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'VMNAME': the device does not recognize the command. (0x80070016). (virtual machine ID GUID).

Replication is going over port 80 and the firewall is setup to allow this on all servers. The servers aren't in production use and are locally connected (so no latency issues).

All network communication is fine and the servers are all healthy.

I've seen a similar issue in the forum here but we are not getting the timeout error. This was resolved with a script, but surely we don't have to go back a step and start scripting fixes for whats supposedly core functionality?

Does anyone have any thoughts?
