(2012 R2) Virtual Switch issues with Static IP

$
0
0

I have built 2 new servers ready for a cluster (Server 2012 R2), both have 2 NIC ports built in plus PCI quad port 1Gb NIC's in them. 2 standard NIC ports are disabled.

Quad port NIC's teamed in Windows. Created a virtual switch for each server using the team. Cisco switches configured correctly for teaming.

Seems to work ok with DHCP, as soon as I set Static IP on the vSwitch loses network connectivity. Says unknown network and doesn't detect Domain, can't connect to it via RDP.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Hyper-V WIndows Server 2012 R2 event ID 157 Disk x has been surprise removed using windows backup

$

I've found a few postings on Event ID 157 for Windows 2012 R2, but no answers

We've upgraded from Server 2012 to 2012 R2. Hyper-V Role. Event ID 157 occurs when Windows Backup is running to backup Hyper-V machines. People have reported the same issue I am having. They have ID 157 occurring only during the Windows Backup process or if they use VSS Snapshots to backup hyper-v virtual machines.

I've found event ID 157 was designed for 2012 R2 Storage Groups when a disk is removed, so it seems like it is a bug showing up during Windows Backup.

One time (out of about 10 now - once each day) that this event was logged, a software RESET was sent to the LSI Mega Raid controller for half of the array and consistency checks were immediately done. I hope this does not happen again.

Everything worked fine before we moved from 2012 to 2012 R2. I've done a clean install and it still happens.

I've looked through the event logs on the virtual machines and we have one Windows 2008 Server running SQL 2008 R2 and it chokes through the entire backup process with hundreds of errors, starting with the SQL VSS Writer receiving a command that it does not understand. From then onward it says tables and data are corrupt, but the normal SQL maintenance job we have running for SQL Server backs up the databases and performs consistenacy checks without issues.

I've just remove the SQL Server from the Windows Backup and will see how it goes tonight.

In case this is related to the SQL Server, here's the error that is 1st logged as soon as the Windows Backup on the host begins:

Event ID 513, CAPI2, Error, Cruptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details: AddCoreCsiFiles: BeginFileEnumeratrion() failed.

System Error: Access is denied.

After that it freezes the databases, gives dozens of errors for each table, and then restores each table to normal operation.

The Guest SQL server appears to always be the 1st VM to get backed up, so I doubt this has anything to do with it, but thought I should provide as many details as possible, especially when everyone else has discovered it is VSS related and this guest is reporting VSS errors.

What do you think?
thanks
John
P.S. there are no hard drive errors, so running check disk will not help.

Hyper V backup failure with error code 2155348129 and event ID 10111 on Hyper V VMMS

We have a Hyper V server with Windows 2008 R2 SP1.on this server there are 2 VM s one is a VM for Symantec Endpoint manager and the  other is a SBS 2011 server.

Windows backup is enabled on the Hyper V server and getting backed up to a 2TB USB 3 drive.

Intermittently Hyper V backup fails with the following error message

The backup operation that started at '?2013?-?09?-?20T03:30:10.642000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

When this happens the Hyper V VSS writer displays the following error message

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'

Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}

Writer Instance Id: {e1f3a9eb-4e83-4998-bd7d-ef5d725dd9e2}

State: [5] Waiting for completion

Last error: Unexpected error

On the Hyper V VMMS admin log entries similar to the following is listed with event ID 10111. Please note that the entry I m posting here is related to the SBS VM I can see entries for the other VM as well.

Failed to mount the virtual hard disk '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2303\Hyper-V\SBS2011\Virtual Hard Disks\SBS2011.vhd' for virtual machine 'SBS2011' (Virtual machine ID C093E570-411D-41E9-A187-FC4303A57A4A).

SBS2011.VHD is mounted as the C drive on the SBS VM and this is a fixed size VHD.This is a 200 GB VHD and 102 GB of free disk space remains on the VHD.

SBS backup is getting written to a physical pass through disk and its getting completed without any issues. SBS backup starts and gets completed few hours before the Hyper V backup starts. All the VSS writers are stable on the SBS VM and the only VSS /SPP related warning message (No Errors) on the SBS is as follows.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Failed resolving account spsearch with status 1376. Check connection to domain controller and VssAccessControl registry key.

Operation:

   Initializing Writer

Context:

   Writer Class Id: {4dc3bdd4-ab48-4d07-adb0-3bee2926fd7f}

Writer Name: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

Error-specific details:

Error: NetLocalGroupGetMemebers(spsearch), 0x80070560, The specified local group does not exist.

I don’t think it has any connection because this warning is listed on the days when the Hyper V backup gets successfully completed.

There are no VSS/SPP errors/warnings on the Hyper V application log.

If we reboot the Hyper V server (thus rebooting the SBS server) then we can go for about a week or so without any further failures.

Would really appreciate if someone can assist us on this in order to find a permanent resolution .

Thanks

VHD Conversion Failure

My virtual machine hosts are running W2K8R2 SP1 Datacenter edition in a HA Cluster. I have a Cluster Shared Volume with gobs of free space. This morning I created a new Windows Server 2003 VM from an Acronis Backup and Recovery 11.5 Virtual Edition TIB. When I went to convert the VHD from dynamic to fixed I got Event ID 15066, failed to convert the vhd, error code 2424869. After some research, I verified that no shadow copies existed within the VM. I also did not have the DVD drive captured or the Integration Services disk inserted (no optical media, only C:\ and D:\).

I don't know what else to try other than checking permissions. Any suggestions?

Thansk,

Vint

Hello Everyone.

I would like to LiveMigrate a VM from HostA in AD Forest1 to HostB in AD Forest2.  There is a two-way trust established between the two AD Forests.  Does anyone know if this is possible?  I have not been successful.

Blade servers have been popular for a long time, some shops have racks and racks of them.

What tools for Windows Hyper-V use and a giant swarm of virtual machines would be best to aid the tech to find and replace the dead blades and disks in the storage servers.

I am aware that Hyper-V can handle up to around 1000 virtual machines when I inquired about Hyper-V vs IBM's server

Hi,

I'm having frequent crashes (1 per week) on a Windows 2012 Hyper-V server.

Server: Lenovo TS430 0441GU  -- Brand new server (around 2 months old right now)

Storage: RAID 10

RAID Controller: LSI MR9240-8i SCSI

No Cluster. Workgroup member. Running w/o the GUI. It's a full Windows 2012 Standard with Hyper-V as only role and 2 Windows 2012 Std VMs on top of it.

Here's one memory dump file:

I'm wondering if my storage system has any problems because:

1) I'm getting this messages on the System event log:

The description for Event ID 56 from source Application Popup cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

SCSI
000000

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

2) Also...

The IO operation at logical block address 800 for Disk 3 was retried.

(I have 2 USB external drives plugged in and I don't know how to identifiy the disks using the \Device\Harddisk#\... notation. The message could refer to those external drives. According to diskpart, my disks are 0, 1, 2  though where 0 is my system RAIDed volumen; and 1 and 2 are the USB drives)

3) I tried updating the LSI firmware yesterday and it would go to the 70% and then the server crashed. I tried 2 times. Same behavior.

The MegaCli64 command doesn't report any issues with the controller nor with the disks. That's why I'm not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

AppLocker and HyperV server

I think I have done too good a job on a previous project of selling applocker to our business.

whilst configuring our first HyperV cluster within the organisation I made the decision to user HyperV server (I did this for security but also for licensing reasons on future projects and wanting a common solutions). However in a bit of a introduce HyperV to the rest of the IT department one of the BA's comment was about the lack of AppLocker and that if HyperV server was about making things more secure then why not include it in the solutions. My only answer was it's not supported.qa

My questions therefore are;

  1. Am I correct that AppLocker doesn't support HyperV server (I know the lack of GUI make things more secure but bad things can still run for command line)
  2. If AppLocker was to become an IT standard should I still push for an exceptation and stick with HyperV server or go to windows server without GUI and HyperV and then make use of AppLocker.
  3. Final question, any know negatives except for the usual of make sure rule are spot on before enforcing

Thanks for any assistance,

Daniel Sutton

import-vm with incompatibility - virtual hard disk not found 40010

hi ,

i was wondering if i can import a vm copied from somewhere else. i get incompatibility issue where it say virtual hard disk not found. i know you can change the vhd location in xml file and it will work or can do it from GUI which will ask you for VHD source if not found in the location mentioned in xml file.  Also if you put the VHD file in sub folder called "Virtual Hard Disks" then it will just work regardless of the vhd location in xml file.

I want to import multiple VMs so don't want to be change xml manually or importing from GUI.

Many thanks.

Is there any way to set up a NIC on a virtual HyperV guest in promiscuous mode?
I want to try and run a web filtering product on a VM. Wireshark does not indicate that it is capturing all traffic.
I have my switch port mirrored already and it works with a regular box but not with the VM.

Any help would be appreciated.

Experts !

Windows 2012 R2 Cluster.

2 Physical NICs dedicated for Hyper-V data traffic. These two NICs are used to create a team using Windows teaming (Switch Independent + HyperV Port) and this teamed interface is used for HyperV Virtual Switch.

Disabling VLAN Id via Hyper-V 2012 Server Core

Hi All,

I mistakenly enabled VLAN ID on a test VM host server before checking the port it was connected to was configured correctly, and have subsequently lost connection to my server.

Is there any way that I can disable/remove the VLAN ID settings from my server via the console?

Thanks,

Bob

Does the "Move" option in Hyper-V 2012 management console perform a live or a quick migration?

$

When a VM is in a Hyper-V failover cluster there are two distinct options for moving a VM in the failover cluster manager: live migration and quick migration. I understand the differences at a high level and know that for Exchange, only live migration is supported.

However, what kind of migration is carried out when the VM is not in a cluster and you use the "Move" option in the Hyper-V manager to move the VM configuration files alone (storage is shared)? It's not clear whether this is a live or quick migration although I'm inferring that it's live migration as quick migration is never mentioned except when in the context of Hyper-V clustering.

Basically what I'm asking is "If I use the move option in Hyper-V manager to move an Exchange VM", am I carrying out a live or quick migration?

Let's park questions about whether Exchange supports live migration as there are many articles which say it does since SP1 and there are many that say you have to cold start the VM.

Thanks, Rob.

VM with dynamic Memory in Bootloop

Hey there,

in a Server 2012 Cluster there is a VM with Server 2003 Ent. SP2 x86 with dynamic Memory which hangs in a bootloop. There is no Bluescreen or something like this. Change it to static memory, everything is fine.

tried:
- reinstalled the Integration Services
- exported and imported the VM
- installed older integration services
no changes to the behavior of the VM in startprocess.

Can anyone help with a solution?

Thanks!

Windows servers 2003 servers - Can't shutdown after converted

Hello everyone,
I have a serious problem.
After I made numerous conversions from VMware to Hyper-v I discovered that Windows server 2003 servers converted - Can not shutdown.

If I try to turn them off, they make a reboot instead of shutting down.
The only thing I can do is to turn off by Hyper-V Manager (which is very bad for machines).

The 2008+2012 Servers converted, Work correctly without any problems.

Thanks in advance.

Server 2012 Gen 2 VM hosted on Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host incompatible with Integration Services after Windows update

If you take a Server 2012 R2 Host and update it, and then setup a Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Virtual Machines on it with the latest Integration Services.  Setup SR-IOV on both VMs.  Everything will be ok in the Integration Services status, but when you update the Virtual Machines, the Server 2012 R2 will continue to report that it's up to date.  But the 2012 will show that it needs it's Integration Services updated, when it's already running the latest Integration Services.  I'm not sure which update it is that is causing the conflict, and don't have the time to install 60 of them 1 by 1 to figure it out.

Hyper-V 2012 dynamic memory not allocating more

$
0
0

I'm noticing an issue with my VM's.

Basically the VM for example is set to have a minimum of 4GB (startup 4GB) and max of 8GB. When I log into the VM it is maxed out at 4GB so Hyper-V isn't allocating the 8GB it should have.

The host it is running on is only using 70 out of 160GB so the host seems to have plenty of memory that it could allocate more to the VM.

The strange part is I can do a live migrate to any other host and when it moves it will instantly allocate the 8GB to the VM.

What could be causing this? My hosts are Server 2012 (with GUI).

Static MAC pool over multiple hosts without SCVMM

$

Hi,

We don't have SCVMM, but do have multiple hosts. Unfortunately we have several apps that are MAC address licensed.

If we manually assigned the machines with static MACs from SCVMM's standard MAC pool, would this cause any issues if/when we move to SCVMM at a later date?

This seems to be the only thing that springs to mind to ensure we don't get clashes and pick addresses from a "safe" pool.

Thanks

Memory demand does not match with the Used Ram shown inside the VM

Hello,

I have enabled dynamic Memory for a guest VM on a Windows 2008 R2.

Now, "Memory Demand" shown in the Hyper-V Manager never matches the "Used Ram" that can be seen from "Task Manager" from inside the VM.

Please explain this behavior and from where can I get exact RAM used for a VM from host ?

Thanks.
