Hyper V backup failure with error code 2155348129 and event ID 10111 on Hyper V VMMS

We have a Hyper V server with Windows 2008 R2 SP1.on this server there are 2 VM s one is a VM for Symantec Endpoint manager and the  other is a SBS 2011 server.

Windows backup is enabled on the Hyper V server and getting backed up to a 2TB USB 3 drive.

Intermittently Hyper V backup fails with the following error message

The backup operation that started at '?2013?-?09?-?20T03:30:10.642000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

When this happens the Hyper V VSS writer displays the following error message

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'

Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}

Writer Instance Id: {e1f3a9eb-4e83-4998-bd7d-ef5d725dd9e2}

State: [5] Waiting for completion

Last error: Unexpected error

On the Hyper V VMMS admin log entries similar to the following is listed with event ID 10111. Please note that the entry I m posting here is related to the SBS VM I can see entries for the other VM as well.

Failed to mount the virtual hard disk '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2303\Hyper-V\SBS2011\Virtual Hard Disks\SBS2011.vhd' for virtual machine 'SBS2011' (Virtual machine ID C093E570-411D-41E9-A187-FC4303A57A4A).

SBS2011.VHD is mounted as the C drive on the SBS VM and this is a fixed size VHD.This is a 200 GB VHD and 102 GB of free disk space remains on the VHD.

SBS backup is getting written to a physical pass through disk and its getting completed without any issues. SBS backup starts and gets completed few hours before the Hyper V backup starts. All the VSS writers are stable on the SBS VM and the only VSS /SPP related warning message (No Errors) on the SBS is as follows.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Failed resolving account spsearch with status 1376. Check connection to domain controller and VssAccessControl registry key.

Operation:

   Initializing Writer

Context:

   Writer Class Id: {4dc3bdd4-ab48-4d07-adb0-3bee2926fd7f}

Writer Name: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

Error-specific details:

Error: NetLocalGroupGetMemebers(spsearch), 0x80070560, The specified local group does not exist.

I don’t think it has any connection because this warning is listed on the days when the Hyper V backup gets successfully completed.

There are no VSS/SPP errors/warnings on the Hyper V application log.

If we reboot the Hyper V server (thus rebooting the SBS server) then we can go for about a week or so without any further failures.

Would really appreciate if someone can assist us on this in order to find a permanent resolution .

Thanks

Dhanushka

move VM between hyper-v 2012 give error: EventId=20770, 'General access denied error'('0x80070005').

Hello,

Hyper-v 2012 on 2 servers (SRV1, SRV2). VM its server 2012. Domain. No cluster. No share folders.
SRV1 have full_access to the VM folder in SRV2.
SRV2 have full_access to the VM folder in SRV1.
Firewall disabled.
Live migration use Kerberos.
Constrained delegation configured for Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service use Kerberos.

When I run "move" for VM:
Migration did not succeed.

Failed to create folder '\\SRV-1\SRV-2.4148531528$\{562ddbf2-2115-11e3-b1d6-001e671938db}\vm\srv-vm-1\Virtual Hard Disks': 'General access denied error'('0x80070005').

How to fix it?

Additional info:

I can move VM from SRV-1 to SRV-2 and from SRV-2 to SRV-1, if I do this from SRV-1 (or SRV-2).

If I move VM fom "Hyper-v Manager" snap-in, I take error fom "Domain-Admin" account, not from SYSTEM account.

HyperV setup

Hello everyone

I am planning to set up WinServer2008-Enterprise and I will install 2 VM using hyperv.

The machine I am planning to do this on has 2x500GB disks which I will setup as RAID1.

How much space should I allocate for the windows OS and for the 2VMs? 1VM will be used to setup a print server and I haven't decided what to do with the second one yet. There is no exchange, only active directory will be used.

Any suggestions please?

Many thanks

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster Guest Network Slow

Hello All,

I recently built a 2 node cluster using Windows Server 2012 R2. I had the same configuration running on non R2 2012 with no problems. I attach a guest to a virtual switch and can see the ping times (normally less than 1ms) jump to 100ms to 500ms and back down to 1ms. If i try to access the network from this server ping times and network performance of the VM grinds to a halt. We are using New Dell R620's for hardware and Broadcom Netextreme II cards. No complaints of drivers in OS, 100% pass on cluster verification. Anyone else have this problem?

Rollback on single Domain Controller

Hi everybody!

I am rather shocked, I just opened an older snapshot of my virtual Domain Controller (Hyper-V) without saving the actual state. Now my Active Directory stopped working. The Domain Controller cannot be found. The problem is that there is no other domain controller and I cannot backup the AD right now. Futhermore I do not unterstand the problem. What is wrong about the consistency if there is only one DC in the whole Domain?

Thanks very much for help!

Greetings,

Martin

Hyper-V 2012 R2 guests aren't shutdown properly on host shutdown

$

I have installed a new System based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard RTM (german)

So the Host is running Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V Role.
Then I have installed a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard as guest, which is running fine, except the integrating Services.
(Generation 2, dynamic memory)

The guest is not shutted down, when I shutdown the host, even when configured to do so (shutdown guest).
So the Hyper-V guest is just powered off, and I will get a power off warning in the guests eventviewer on the next start.

As the guest is Windows Server 2012 R2, the Integration Service can't be installed, as they are installed automatically. Also the Services seems to be up and running on the guest.

When connecting the guest from the Hyper-V console, the shutdown button from the console is working.
Also the shutdown command from inside the Hyper-V Manager works correct.

So what I'm missing?

Copying VHD's

A friend of mine and I just had a conversation about creating multiple VM's and he said that when he needs to create multiple VM's, he just creates one (in Hyper-V Manager or VMM) and then, before joining the machine to the domain, he makes multiple copies of the VHD.  Each VHD then becomes an independent machine.

Are there any problems creating VM's this way?  I know that I have done it in the past but usually only when I needed to set up a test environment that I was going to throw away after a bit, never for production machines.

ISCSI network dedicated switch or vlans

Our two node hyper-v cluster is currently directly connected to our Iscsi solution solution. we in in the process of expanding this and are going to put in a couple of cisco 3750x switches. I have a couple of questions about the switch configuration.

1. should the switches be configured in a stack configuration, or idependant? what are the pros and cons of this.

2. I was planning on keeping the switches dedicated for iscsi with no vlans for data. This configuration has always been recomended by instructors. Is there a microsoft best practice on this?

Thanks

iSCSI recommendations

Currently, I have a 2 node Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster with 7 VMs serving 75 users in a typical office.  Each node has a single iSCSI nic connection to a single HP 2810 24 port Gig switch.  Flow control is on and Jumbo frames are enabled at 9000.  The SAN has two connections to the switch configured as LAG.  Nodes are Dell 710s w Broadcom nics.

My question is....

If I enable MPIO on the nodes and connect a second nic to the iSCSI switch, will that help with performance or just redundancy?  I'm not so concerened about redundancy because if one nic goes down on one node, the other node can support all VMs.

And then the same for the swtich.  If I connect a 2nd identical HP 2810 switch and stack it, and have each node have a connection to each swtich, i'm assuming that will only help with redundancy right?

Do you think these swtiches are fine for my application?

Thakns for any advice you can give.

Disk2vhd of WIndows Server 2003 R2 without activation

I am trying to virtualize a Win2003R2 server onto Win2012Datacentre Hyper-V using Disk2Vhd however the new VM locks up after 3 days because the OS requires re-activation.

I don't really want to re-activate it until I have finished evaluating the implications of this virtualization.

How can I proceed for a while without re-activating Win2003R2?

Hyper-V in Mixed (2008/2012) Environment

I've read a number of articles and I apologize for my lack of understanding. I have a 3 Hyper-V 2008 R2 Datacenter environment (Rougly 10 VM's across the 3 Hosts) all connected to a SAN via iSCSI Initiator utilizing Storage and Cluster Shared Volumes within Failover Cluster Manager. I do NOT have any systems configured under Failover Clustering within Services and Applications. I might add a server to the Services and Applications section when manually migrating a VM between hosts but the VM's do not stay there long. We have 1 license to upgrade 1 Host from 2008 R2 to 2012. Our hope was to upgrade one of the Hyper-V 2008 R2 servers to 2012 and utilize the additional CPU feature in 2012 on a few of our VM's.   I'm reading, "You can not use W2K12 and W2K8 R2 in one Failover Cluster. Failover Cluster requirements : All nodes must have identical OS Level."  Does this mean that I'm unable to utilize the existing Services and Applications piece which I'm currently not using or does this mean everything including Storage and Cluster Shared Volumes is completely different between the two different OS? Having only 1 license, is it a good idea/or even possible to upgrade 1 of the 3 hosts with the goal to give a select few VM's more than 4 CPU's on the 2012 Hyper-V Host?

Dynamic Memory on Linux VMs?

$

I know that dynamic memory capability was added to linux in Windows Server 2012 R2. I was told that this would also added to Windows 8.1. I am running windows 8.1 enterprise RTM. I am also running Debian 7.1

As you can tell i'm running kernel 3.2.0.4. I know the drivers for hyper-v are now being integrated into the linux kernel. What version of the kernel was the dynamic memory piece integrated into the linux kernel?  I have dynamic memory enabled & it definetely is not working (on linux at least). Memory never goes down from the value specified in the "Startup RAM".

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks....

hyper-v storage question

Hi,

I will be purchasing a dell server to run hyper-v with 3 virtual machines running on it.

1 - fileserver which needs 500gb storage

1 - terminal server which needs 100gb storage

1- dc controller which needs 60gb storage

Now my question is which is best practise, can I just dump everything onto the 1 TB drive that came with the server and have virtual harddrives and mirror it. or have separate physical drives for each virtual server and mirror them separately or ?

thanks

Rebooting Hyper-V Host doesn't tidly shutdown/save Guest VMs

$

We're running Windows 2008 Server Core, SP2 in a blade environment. There are three of these blades set up for Failover Clustering. The guests are Windows Server 2008 SP2. The system runs very well. One exception is when the hosts reboot.

When a host reboots due to Automatic Updates, the guests don't seem to shutdown or save tidily. When I reboot the hosts manually, everything seems to work well. Although I don't see the guests failover to another host, they do come back up on the original host after a few minutes. At which point, when I RDC into them, I don't get any error messages about the last shutdown being unexpected.

When the hosts reboot after a Windows Update, they guest VMs, upon the next time I RDC to them, complains of the last shutdown being unexpected. The three hosts are set to reboot an hour apart from each other so there should be ample time for them to do so and have the guests come back up.

VHDX Fails To Mount after copying

I have a Windows 2012 Hyper-v cluster with two nodes. All my VMs and VHDs reside in the CSV on an Equalogic SAN. Recently, I had a data VHD become corrupted on my file server, so I moved all my data from the corrupted VHD to a new VHD. After that was complete and the server was back online, I copied my old corrupted VHD onto an external USB hard drive. Now I am trying to access this old VHD by mounting it directly on the 2012 node and I get an error:

Couldnt mount file

the disk image isnt initialized, contains partitions that arent recognizable, or contains volumes that havent been assigned driver letters. please use the disk management snap-9in to make sure that the disk, partitions, and volumes are in a usable state.

When i go to disk management, I go ahead and set it to online and then it just shows up as a drive with no partition on it. Have i lost this data? what can i do to get this vhd to mount properly again so i can recover some data from it?

Unable to communicate to a core HyperV server

I have installed a core hyperV 2012 server and joined it to the domain. I am able to log onto the server with a domain account. I am able to rdp and ping vis the server name as well as the two IP addresses on the on-board NICs. I am unable to access the server with remote management.

When I open computer management from my windows 8 computer, adn choose Action --> Connect to another computer.. I get the following error:

Computer <blahblah> cannot be managed

<snip>

To enable appropriate windows firewall on remote computer...

<snip>

So I tried to do that and with googling and googling the only problems I see are people solving this problem on a workgroup, and over and over I see 'If I was on a domain, this would be easy'. Additionally, when I try hwremote script it tells me: "No firewall rules found in rule group..."

The only time I was able to get something working on a prior iteration was when I went to a powershell prompt and typed in:

Enable-NetFirewallRule -displayname '*'

But even then when I tried to access disk management to format a partition I got a RPC service is unavailable error. Also I have the exact same errors from two different windows 8 computers.

Does anyone out there have any idea what is going wrong?

No network connectivity on VM

Hi

We are rolling out Hyper-V 3.0 and converting our network from VMware to Hyper-v as we go.

So far so good, but one of the virtual machines I have converted from VMDK to VHD can't be accessed over the network and it can't see outside itself.

I have installed the Intergration Tools (the guest is S2003R2) and it connected it to the same HV Switch as the other VMs.  It appears to have it's NIC there OK and I have given it a static IP address.  It shows it's status as "Connected".  It won't get a DHCP address either.

The only thing I can see that is different from other VMs is that in the VM Network Settings it has a MAC made up of 00:00:etc. when it is both on and off (I would expect it to have 00 if it were off, but not on).  I have attempted to give it a static MAC but this did not fix the problem.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled the Integration Tools but again does not seem to fix the issue.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Hello!

I have Hyper-V 2012 R2 host with enabled monitoring for VMs:

Get-VM -ComputerName host-01 | Measure-VM

After host reboot MeteringDuration disappears for all VMs:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-VM | Measure-VM | Select-Object VMName, MeteringDuration

vm03

Get-VM -ComputerName host-01 | Reset-VMResourceMetering - Helps before next reboot.

How can this problem may be fixed?

Thank's!
