Attach HP P2000 G3 FC SAN to HP DL 380p GEN 8 Server with Windows Server 2012 Server core and Hyper-v

Hello,

My setup is (HP SAN---->HP SERVER) without an FC switch, i am directly connecting the HBA to my FC controller on the SAN,

In my Hyper-v HOST machine i can see the WWN and i am able to create a Virtual SAN using the Virtual SAN manager, But when i try to add and FC adapter to my hyper-v guest running windows Server 2012 it errors out with the following error

NPIV virtual port operation on virtual port (c003ff555df0002) failed. The operation is not supported by the fabric.

Do i need a FC switch in the middle, since I was running a POC i though it is not needed at all. But now with the NPIV error  i cant figure out.

Again my Guest is able to see the WWN and WWP but as soon as i add the hardware to my VM and start it fails??????

Cheers

Add VHD under SCSI controller to one server cause save state problem

My current problem is,

1. If current server already has pass through disk, if we add VHD to this server first time in failover cluster manager, when refreshing storage configuration, VM will be booted into saved state automatically. whether this kind of issue is by design or not?

2. If we add VHD to this server second time, problem won't occur.

3. If we shut down server and add VHD, the save process runs a short time after we start server.

Therefore, I conclude that server configuration needs to be updated if we add VHD first time to the server which has already has pass through disk. But why? Is there has any KB article or MS document which is relevant to this issue?

Many thanks.

Run Chkdsk on VM (Blue Screening)

Hi Everyone,

I have a VM running on Hyper V Serer 2008 Enterprise SP2. The guest OS is also running Server 2008 SP2

My VM is blue screening on startup. Same happens if I try and boot into safe mode. One of the messages displayed on the blue screen is  suggestion to run Chkdsk /F.

My question is how can I run Chkdsk on a VM.

BTW Booting into safe mode with  command prompt also blue screen.

Advice welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

Windows 2012 Server Hyper-V and Windows 7 Pro x86 guest driver

Hi all,

I've done a fresh install of Windows 2012 Server and I'm using it as a host for all my virtualized Windows 2008 R2 servers.

As they had already been created with a Windows 2008 R2 server which was my previous host (I've had to change my host due to a motherboard defect), they're back online with just a few operations to manage them through the Hyper-V console.

After a reboot to have the new hardware detected, the whole domain is working nice and A.D is in sync).

As I've a few things to check out before, I simply needed a Windows 7 Pro x86 guest (no SP1 for this ISO but I don't think it would make any dfference), so, as usual, I've just selected the ISO and thought it would be done in no time at all, but, alas, when I click on "Install now" button in windows 7 pro wizard, I'm being asked to provide a CD/DVD-Rom driver !

As I have no idea of where I could find this driver that I've never been asked to provide for any guest installation (tried the VM guest disk, but it didn't find anything suitable) can anybody tell me if the process is specific now, with Windows 2012 Hyper-V to install a Windows 7 pro x86 guest !!??

Thx for your help !

Regards,

Phil.

Integration services cannot upgrade HAL

$

HI,

We migrated a SBS 2k3 to a virtual machine (host is windows 2k8 sp2 with Hyper-v) using disk2vhd.

We checked the update hal checkmark, but now we are running into a problem. The disk2vhd placed a virtual server hal in the VHD. As soon as we try to insert the integration services disk it keeps saying it has to update the hal and needs a reboot.

We say ok, it says it is updateing the Hal, it reboots and then comes again with the same message that it needs to update the hal. So we are in a loop.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

I was able to recreate the problem with a windows xp machine too.

Best regards,

Henry

server 2012 not compacting vhdx files

$

I have a couple of vhdx files on a 2012 RC host.

One had deduplication run in the guest which cut down the used space from 250 gb to 125 gb.  Compacting it ends in 3 seconds and it doesn't shrink at all, stays at 275 gb.

Another is just a standard vhdx from another guest that has 30 gb of used space, but the vhdx is 39gb.  Compacting also ends immediately with no shrink.

Is compacting broken in rc?

Virtual Machine cannot detect Host computer resourses.

Hello everyone. This is my first time asking a question here.

I will write the issue with as much detail I can provide:

I built a computer to use Windows Multipoint Server 2011 Premium (which I have 5 stations connected to it and can host 1 VM), anyways, that machine has a lot of RAM memory and extra CPU power I want to use for a Virtual Machine that would host a Windows Server 2012 Foundation OS.

Steps:

1.- I have completely installed and configured the Windows Multipoint Server 2011, its up and running perfectly. No issues.

2.- I have created the virtual machine (with Windows Server 2012 Foundations) and have giving it the EXTERNAL virtual lan option in the Virtual Manager in the Host machine.

3.- I have succesfully installed Windows Server 2012 Foundation in the VM, installed AD DS so that I could create a DOMAIN in that Virtual Machine. (BTW, I do have internet access and can view websites with no problem).

4.- I have succesfully created the DOMAIN.

5.- My host machine (WMS 2011 OS) can easyly view the Guest OS's (WS 2012 foundation) shared folders (Resourses), BUT the VM cannot view the Host shared folders (WMS 2011 OS).

6.- I can PING from the Host to the Guest, but NOT from the Guest to the Host.

7.- I have disabled both Firewalls to see if that helped, but I did not.

8.- After creating a Domain in the Guest OS, I went to the Host OS to see if I could join it to the Guest OS domain, but the host can't join it, since it can't find the Domain Controller in the Guest OS.

Could someone tell me why this is happening, or better yet, how to make the Guest OS see the Host's resourses and other physical machines in the local LAN.

Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it.

Hyper-V Virtual IP Address (VIP/VIPA)

$

I have a Hyper-V Server running virtual machines for a development environments, with private ip-addresses assigned.  The Hyper-V server have 2 NIC's, one connected to the private network and one connected to the internet.

I've need the virtual machines to respond to separate domains:
sql.domain.tld
web.domain.tld
app.domain.tld

But the Hyper-V server only have one external IP. Is it possible to "bind" these 3 sub-domains to these separate hyper-v virtual machines with only one external ip-address available?

Some of the services running on these machines uses the same port, so I can't just port forward the used ports.

Hyper-v Virtual Servers Extremly Slow

I am having an issue where My hyper-v virtual servers are extremely slow. It not just start up/login/shutdown that's slow everything is.
This issue only recently started happening as well. I thought something was eating all the resources on the host but according to Process Explorer The CPU, System Commit, Physical Memory, and IO usages are all very low. I cannot figure out why the VM's have become so slow.
My system specs for the host are
CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5606 @ 2.13GHz (Four Core)
Memory: 24.0 GB
HDD: x6 1TB 7200 RPM

Each virtual machine has 4GB of Ram and 2 CPU cores
I only have 4 virtual servers running.
Each machine has only one role installed

The host has Hyper-v but since it's the host it also has the RAID controller software installed.

One VM has the Domain Server and DNS roles
Another VM Has IIS installed for my site
Another has SVN installed for my personal coding projects.
And the last VM has SQL Server installed for storing data for my site.

As I said before it didn't used to be slow. this is something new to a week or so ago. Any ideas why the VMs would be slow?

Also the host has no performance issues at all. The host is extremely fast.

VM Settings Memory Buffer for Windows Server 2012

$

What's the best practice for a VM's memory buffer setting in windows server 2012 (build 9200)?  The default is 20% - if I lower this to 5% it frees up memory in the host which is an advantage.  Are there any disadvantages?

Let's say the host has 8GB RAM:

  • VM1 has the DC role with RAM set to 3GB startup, 1GB min, and 4GB max.  VM also set to autostart when host boots with a 10 second delay.
  • VM2 has database and web server roles with RAM set to 4GB startup, 2432MB min, and 5GB max.  VM is set to autostart when host boots with a 180 second delay.

With the default memory buffer of 20%, the host and 2 VMs can boot and operate with no memory issues.  However, the host's memory load is usually around 80% (with cpu load less than 10%).  I also cannot run an additional VM due to memory shortage.  If I lower the buffer amount to 5% I would free up memory on host, possibly enough to run a third VM.  Is there any risks or potential problems to doing this?

Thanks!

Current Performance info for Server 2012 Comparing IDE Controller and SCSI Controller

$

The Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Getting Started Guide indicates that there is no performance difference between using one of the two virtual IDE Controllers and one of the four SCSI Controllers.

What about in Windows Server 2012? (Build 9200)

Example:

VM with DC role.  All virtual drives are fixed.  IDE Controller 0 has the OS drive.  I have three additional drives to attach:

  • DC database drive
  • DC logs drive
  • Server Backup drive

What is recommended practice?  Attach drive 1 to IDE Controller 0, then attach drives 2 & 3 to IDE Controller 1?  Or attach all three drives to one SCSI Controller?  Or attach each drive to its own SCSI Controller?

Thanks!

Good day,

I have Windows 2008 R2 that hosts 3 virtual machines, suddenly the Raid-5 array failed to start up the machine. after pressing F2 to rebuild the array it started up the windows successfully. regarding the hosted VMs they cannot start up with several errors:

VM#1 : OS Win 2003 , keeps restarting with Blue screen

VM#2 : OS Win 2003 , error "server failed to start,

failed to power on with error 'the file or directory is corruptedand unreadable'

failed to open attachement 'D:\server.vhd' Error , 'the file or directory is corruptedand unreadable'

VM#3 : OS Win 2003 , checking the hard disk through scandisk ..

Any suggestions to return the VMs to its normal status?

I am experiencing an issue when I removed the Wireless device and then re-installed it on Hyper-V Windows 8.

The error states : "Failed while modifying virtual Ethernet Switch connection settings" followed by "Ethernet port {f...} bind failed unspecified error (0x80004005)"

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

$

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

Update virtual switch for a given VM on W2012

$

Hi all

I'm trying to find the Powershell command to update a virtual switch for an existing VM i.e. change the virtual switch connection from "Switch1" to "Switch2" for "VM1". Ideally I'd like to do this while the VM is powered off or have the switch change applied as the VM is powering on.

It sounds like it should be easy but I've been struggling with the cmdlets in Windows 2012 to make this happen.

Hopefully, someone here can help. I'd really appreciate the guidance.

Thanks in advance

physical to virtual server using disk2vhd

I have a w2k3sp2 non DC that i want to move to a VM.  I run the disk2vhd and then create my virtual and move the VHD files to my w2k8r2 host.  I wait a month and then i add a NIC under hyper-v vm manager.  I then unplug the nic on the physical server.  after i reboot the vm it won't let me log since it says my machine account cannot be found and wilkl not let me login while the nic is attached yet my phyiscal server has been disconnected.  Did the delay of the month cause the problem and hsould i run the disk2vhd program move the vdh to the server in one day?  Thanks.

Hyper-v 2012 live migration issue (invalid signature)

$

Hi,

Has anyone experimented with Hyper-V in server 2012? I have two servers: one domain controller and one domain member on which I have enabled Live Migration with Kerberos and changed the delegation constraints (for the domain member). Also added "domain admins" group in the Hyper-V administrators group on the domain member.

I am trying to move a machine between the two servers and it fails with always the same failure (I tried all kinds of VMs):

"Virtual machine migration failed at migration source"
"Failed to create folder"

And then some cryptic error about the virtual hard disk: some "invalid signature" error about the hard disk. Seems like it can't create the disk on the other server for some unknown reason (the invalid signature). And by the way, I am not using the default folders. All my VMs are stored on a separate hard drive on both my servers, each in its own folder under a master folder.

Has anyone experimented with Hyper-V 2012?

Thanks.

Is there a MS equivalent of VMWare View?

$

Hi,

I want to virtualize desktops in my company -- small business. If possible, I'd like to use MS solutions from the server to the client. Is there a MS equivalent of VMWare View?

I like VMWare View's ability to allow user to continue working even if network connection is not available e.g. during a business trip, an employee can continue working during a flight from NY to LA.

Thanks, Sam

Cannot start VM insufficient memory when there is enough.

$

Hi,

I've seen the above error with 2008R2 servers and i hoped it would be fixed in Server 2012 but i had it again today on my small test machine.

If i allocate memory to a VM that fits well into the physical RAM of the host i sometimes get the following error:

Cannot start VM cannot allocate sufficient memory or something.

My test machine has 16GB Ram if i create two VMs with each 7GB ram sometimes one won't start with the above error.

If i reboot the host i can start them.

This leads me to believe that the disk RAM caching of Windows is tripping up the memory allocation. Because after a reboot the cache gets cleared and i can start them.

Any idea if i can disable the filecaching? I don't need it on a VM host.

Kind regards,

Kor
