If I destroy a Hpyer-V cluster, will the nodes go back to being standalone servers?

I have inherited a system infrastructure with no prior documentation (of course). The person before me created a Hyper-V cluster with 4 nodes and one as a failover. What I would like to do is make each of the nodes standalone again as part of the domain so that I may use the failover node as the need has arisen for another virtual machine. If I destroy the cluster, will that affect the virtual machines on it already? I did some searching already and everything talks about migrating the cluster to a new server or evicting a single node. These servers are all Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core installations.

High Availability with Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway

Hello,

I am considering building a hybrid cloud model for an IaaS offering.  One of the issues I have not yet resolved is how to provide a high availability solution for the Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway devices.

It appears the release of dedicated devices have been slow to come to market (I am aware F5 and other have announced devices, but none have arrived to the market as of yet) and the integration of NVGRE into existing network equipment has not happened.  As such, I am looking at using server hardware and Windows Server 2012 to act as my network virtualization gateway.

Having said that, I have found almost no information on how I can use Windows Server 2012 to put together a redundant and highly available solution.  It was briefly touched upon in this article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj618319.aspx

Multiple Gateways

High Availability by using multiple physical Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateways is outside the scope of this article. The datacenter orchestrator (for example VMM) will need to configure and manage the gateway. Scenarios in which the datacenter deploys multiple gateways include scalability and resiliency. For scalability a single physical gateway may not be able to handle the load required for a datacenter. Additionally a single gateway introduces a single point of failure. The partner’s management console should handle deployments consisting of multiple gateways.

And that basically says that it is outside the scope of the article.  So the question is:  can multiple Windows Server 2012 servers be configured to act as a network virtualization gateway?   If so, would all clients be multi-honed for the two gateways, or is there some way of clustering them (using existing technologies) to provide a single address to act as a gateway?  How would these gateways be managed/replicated?  Does SC VMM SP1 have the ability to manage multiple network virtualization gateways?

Thank you.

Multiple vlan and domian issue

Hi ,

before we were running our network with a single vlan 10.1.10.0 /255.255.192.0  and a sonicwall. Now we had created 5 vlans with different ip ranges. the servers are running only in the previous vlan ,  the new data vlan with the ip range is starting from 10.1.111.0/24  .All scopes are created in the dhcp server for the vlans. The issue i am facing is the pc cannot be added to the domain from the new data vlan.do i need to do anything extra in the domain server???? .the inter vlan routing is working perfectly.

Hyper-V 2012 Disaster Site Config for NICs

I am in the processing of building a 3-node Hyper-V cluster for our disaster recovery site.  I'm not sure if I will use Hyper-V replica to keep a small subset of VMs available or if I will use our SAN replication to make them available.  I'm trying to figure out what I will need in terms of network connectivity.  The servers have 4 NICs and no open slots on the riser card for expansion.  All VMs will be on the same subnet and they will only be active in the event of a site failure at our main datacenter.  The SAN is connected via FC and there is no need for iSCSI connectivity.  Will the 4 NICs be sufficient and can somebody provide me with a list of what roles each NIC would need in this configuration?

Thanks!

Hi,

Is it possible to boot a specific VM to the screen from an Hyper-V sever so the client does not see the Hyper-V command line screen.

As if no constrained delegation

I have three physical Hyper-V hosts.  Two are Server 2012 R2 and one is HV Server 2012 R2.  All RTM, activated, and seeing each other fine on the network.  My DC is a newly installed Server 2012 R2 server also.

I've enabled constrained delegation on all three, each for the sake of the other two.

This all worked great in Server 2012.  But now, I can't launch a VM move from a remote server.  Sending a machine from the local server to another works, but trying to launch the return move from that same server fails with the "Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration source" error, telling me that it "failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the source host:no suitable credentials available."

It's reminding me to make sure that Constrained Delegation is enabled for the host in Active Directory.   I've done that.

Is there something new that I'm missing?

2 NIC in One Virtual Server

Hello,

We have just implemented LYNC 2013 and we want to now configure the edge server pool. Since we dont have physical servers, we decided to go virtual. I have created a Windows Server 2008 R2 Image with no Network.

The Physical server has 6 NICs, one of them is used (Local Area Connecton 6). So how to configure the image I created on Hyper-V(hosted on this mahcine) with 2 NIC. (We have 5 of them remaining from Local Area Connection 1-5)

Cannot Live Migrate VMs

Hi

We have set up a HV Cluster on WS 2012.  Currently there are two nodes in the Cluster.  VMs are stored on a Scale Out File Server.  We have also introduced VMM 2012SP1 into the mix.  All appears to be going OK but we can't Live Migrate any VM in the Cluster.

If I attempt to Live Migrate from within VMM we get the following error:

Error (10698)
The virtual machine (PaulTest) could not be live migrated to the virtual machine host (HVH3) using this cluster configuration.

Recommended Action
Check the cluster configuration and then try the operation again.

When I check the error message inside Failover Cluster Manager we have the following message:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine PaulTest' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'PaulTest' failed at migration source 'HVH2'. (Virtual machine ID E214796B-FB3B-4631-8291-7A352511784F)

Planned virtual machine creation failed for virtual machine 'PaulTest': An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746). (Virtual Machine ID E214796B-FB3B-4631-8291-7A352511784F).

Failed to receive data for a Virtual Machine migration: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746).

I couldn't find much information regarding this on my travels, aside from a post suggesting to turn off Chimney Offload (I have confirmed it is already disabled on hosts and VMs).

In Failover Cluster Manager networks have been configured for Live Migration.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

What happens if one Node failed while CSV is in 'Redirected Access' mode?

I always notice that the csv volume go into "redirected access mode (bakup in progress)" every night when the backup is being performed. It does snap out of this when the backup is complete. However, it got me thinking. What happens if one of the nodes failed while it is in this mode?

Ps. This is a two node cluster. I have tested it when in regular mode, and it does work pretty good if one of the nodes fail.

Thank you all for your answers is advance.

Adding own Secure Boot keys to a Hyper-V Generation 2 VM

Hey,

I'm currently testing generation 2 hyper-v VM's , and would like to test different client OS's that isn't signed by Microsoft.

Since all non-arm machines is required to allow adding ones own keys to the key store for Secure Boot, I as expecting this to be possible in Hyper-V too.

However, I'm unable to figure out how to change there to my own keys, so I can install ect. Linux and still use Secure Boot.

So, how do I change the keys for a 2012 R2 Generation 2 VM? :-)

Thanks

Hello everybody.

We have a virtual machie on Windows Failover Cluster with  Hyper-V role, Windows Server 2012.

Is there a possibility to provide user initiated backup and restore for the machine?

I have a newly installed Windows Server 2012 R2 running the Hyper-v role, the only role it is using.

I have created a new Generation 2 guest VM, Windows Server 2012 R2 std, the only VM and set integration services to 'Operation system shutdown'

Host:

Dell 2950 Dual processor, 8 core, 32Gb RAM

Info:

The 'Hyper-v Guest Shutdown Service' is running in the VM.

VM will shutdown using hyper-v manager.

Problem:

Shutdown the host and the VM is turned off!

Any ideas please?

Changing to default location of the replicated hyperv servers

Here is my scenario:

I have 3 Hyper-v servers in site A. They are replicating to site B. My problem is that site B server is running out of room. I want to change the default location of the replicated files at site B to a NAS that I just put in. My question is, do I need to stop replication from the primary to the replica or can I just change the location on the replica server at site B to point to the NAS.

Hyper-v 2012 R2 & Disk Space?

I'm in the process of ordering some parts to covert my esxi 5.1 (free) over to hyper-v. Currently i'm running esxi under a usb drive but i decided to get a SSD drive for hyper-v. I plan on using 2012 R2. The SSD i orders is a 120GB drive. I would like to partition the SSD so that some of the virtual machines that i want to have fast disk access can also use the ssd. I also want to partition it in a way so that i won't have problems in the future if i want to upgrade the hyper-v OS to the next version. According to this you should be able to fit hyper-v within 16GB:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee731893(WS.10).aspx

I will leave the page file for the host on the ssd. Currently i have 24GB or ram.

Any recommendations?

Disabling Disk Write Cache for a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller Running as a Hyper-V Guest

$

Hello,

We have a physical server running Windows 2012 Server Standard with the Hyper-V role enabled. One of the guest systems is a Windows 2012 Server Domain Controller. We are getting the following error message in the System Event Log:

Event ID: 32 - Source: disk - Description: The driver detected that the device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has its write cache enabled. Data corruption may occur.

In addition to this, there is the following event in the Directory Services Event Log:

Event ID: 1539 - Source: ActiveDirectory_DomainService - Description: Active Directory Domain Services could not disable the software-based disk write cache on the following hard disk.

Hard disk:

c:

Data might be lost during system failures.

I checked the properties of the logical disks on the host server, and the setting 'Enable write caching on the device' isnot selected on both logical drives.

The update KB2855336 is installed on the host server.

The guest server is using a virtual IDE controller for the hard drive, and the virtual hard disk is VHDX.

When I check the properties of the disk drive within the gues OS (virtual HD ATA device), the setting 'Enable write caching on the device' is selected, and there is a warning that says: "This device does not allow its write-caching setting to be changed."

I have yet to find a clear answer through the forums on if the above log entries can be disregarded, or if there is still additional work that needs to be done to ensure we do not lose AD if the host server crashes.

I am moving my customer from physical DCs to all Windows Server 2012 virtual DCs, and I need to know if I need to have a physical server running as their DC with the FSMO roles.

Any help would be appreciated.

Snapshot/Differential disk merged now VM won't boot and it's still looking for .avhd file

Last night we lost a differential disk file for hyper-v that contained all of our SQL data since 7/22.

What happened was I went to merge/delete snapshots and when it completed and I tried to boot, it said it could not find disk.   I did not simply open windows explorer and delete files, I actually right clicked on snapshots in the hyper-v manager and removed them that way.

When I look at the the virtual machine CSV, it shows that the machine was still looking for a differential disk rather than the base disk which implies that it didn't actually merge anything but it did remove the snapshot disk.  Now I’m left with a base disk and two snapshot disks both dated on 7/22.

What I have, is a base disk and one snapshot for the disk.

The error in event log when the machine attempts to start is

Failed to get VHD ('C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Hyper-V\SQL2008\SQL2008-141769b5de4f72c_B828028B-CD67-420F-AA12-50B5F1551D9B.avhdx') parent: 'The system cannot find the file specified.'('0x80070002').

After looking in the logs, I also see these events around the same time that I removed snapshots.

The Virtual Machines configuration C33AD948-A9D8-4DED-9ACE-4B351CE65D88 at 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Hyper-V\SQL2008' is no longer accessible: The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid. (0x800703EE).

Cannot delete snapshot: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002). Snapshot ID BC8BB4EA-EB1E-4D10-B614-DF9787F76C40.

'SQL2008' failed to remove snapshot. (Virtual machine ID C33AD948-A9D8-4DED-9ACE-4B351CE65D88)

I'm not sure how the disk could have been externally altered or what that even means.
