VMware to Hyper-V Migration: Downtime of VM's under migration?

$

We have to perform a migration from Vmware cluster with vCenter and a HP EVA SAN to a new Hyper-V 2012 cluster (not existing yet) with a HP 3par SAN. We have to migrate 32 VM's, all production servers. Minimal downtime of this VM's is a requirement. It's possible that the customer will decide to abandon the project and buy expensive VMware licences again if we can't fullfill this requirement.

We will perform the VM migration either with the Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter Solution Accelerator (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34591) or SCVMM 2012.

But I haven't found any information regarding the downtime of VM's under migration. Which of these Microsoft migration tools provides the shortest downtimes for the VM's under migration? What I have read is that both migration solutions perform a snapshot of the VM on VMware as one of the first steps, then shutting down the VM on VMware for copying the vmdk file, then converting the file to vhdx. Is it possible to migrate and convert the vmdk file at the state of the snapshot, the restarting the VM on the VMware server, and then migrate the differencing files from the snapshot to the current state in a second step? Are there baselines how long the copy and converting process takes, for example for a vm with one 100 GB vmdx file on a 1 GB network? And one last remark: We do not have any storage replication SW between the two SAN's.

Thank you all in advance for any support.

Franz

Non unique MAC addresses when creating VM NIC on ManagementOS

Hi

I've just hit a problem configuring hyper-V server 2012 using powershell and I'm hoping someone can help

Scenario:

  • A pair of intel X520 10G nics  configured as a Team using native windows teaming.
  • a vswitch connected to the team
  • a vmnetworkadapter added to the vswitch with the -managementOS flag to allow the host OS to use it.

The vnic is created with a mac address of 00-15-5d-00-00-00 on every server.

assigning a static address solves the immediate problem but is not an acceptable solution.

Any ideas ?

Sorry for the lack of knowledge on this... Is there a seperate location to downloading Hyper-V patches/updates or are the patches and updates rolled out via the standard Windows updates?

HDCP Issues with Hyper V and AMD video drivers

Hello

I have purchased a legitimate copy of Windows 8 Pro and have acquired two films through Xbox video, I also have a Netflix account. Whenever I try to watch the purchased videos or play a movie through Netflix I receive the following errors.

After much research I understand that it can be caused by a combination of different things.

  • AMD Video Drivers
  • Hyper V
  • Windows Media Player/Xbox Video bug
  • Windows 8 bug

Here is my computer specification

As you can see I have the latest driver installed, I have also tested video playback from these apps on every previous version of the video driver. I also require Hyper V and Windows 8 (as is) for work so these things cannot be compromised.  I have also opened up posts on the following forums so please do not try and direct me to someone else.

RemoteFX im VMs not working (freezing during boot)

Hello TechNet users,

I've switched from VMWare Workstation to MS Hyper-V today to test its feature set and also to evaluate MS RemoteFX. These are the specs of my Hostnode:

  • Intel i7 920 (VT-d)
  • Server 2012 Datacenter Edition
  • AMD Radeon HD 6450

According to the Hyper-V settings my GPU should be compatible.

So far I have installed Windows 7 Enterprise with all current updates and latest Integration Services I have also installed a second OS, Windows 8 Enterprise, again with all currently available updates as well as latest Inegration Services.

Both VMs are accessible via regular RDP connections.

What I then do is, shut them down, open the settings in Hyper-V, add remoteFX adapter. When rebooting/booting both Windows versions only get to the Windows bootlogo and then just freeze.

I am not sure how to troubleshoot from here on, because as soon as i turn the VMs off and remove the rFX adapter, they boot properly again.

Trying to connect to VM through RWW, but receiving "the computer that you are trying to connect cannot be contacted. Verify that it is turned on, ...."

I'm trying to connect to one of my VM through RWW, but receiving next error: "the computer that you are trying to connect cannot be contacted. Verify that it is turned on, ...."

A weird thing is that through same RWW I can connect to other VM within same Hyper-V.

Problems started after W2008 ran updates.

Any suggestions?

Disable escape key sequence in Hyper V VM

Hello,

Are you able to disable the escape key sequence in Hyper V VM?  Like in VM Ware you can just mouse in and mouse out?  Is that possible with Hyper V.  Its very tedious to hit a 3 key sequence when you want to leave the VM.

Thanks!

Hyper-V Cluster SAN Configuration

$

I've seen a conflicting best practices depending where I look.  I'm not sure if this depends on the Windows Server version or is a matter of opinion.  Is it better to have separate volumes for each virtual machine on our hyper-v cluster or will single volumes with multiple VM's work just as well?

I initially read that it was ideal to have each machine on it's on volume.  This however is a pain and doesn't seem all that practical.    Is there an official best practice on this?

I'm running a Single 2012 Hyper-V cluster on a Equalogic SAN.  We are a small enterprise and will probably never have more than 2-3 dozen vm's.  I'm however in the process of building a RDSH Farm and spinning up a new volume for each server has proven very inefficient.

Upgraded to Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 now getting "RPC server unavailable" error

I just upgraded my Hyper-V Server 2012 to Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, and now I'm having problems remotely managing it.

My workstation is a Windows 8 machine that is domain joined to a PDC running as a VM on the Hyper-V server. The Hyper-V server itself does not belong to the domain, so I created a local user account with administrative privileges.

Everything worked fine before the upgrade, and immediately after the upgrade I was able to manage the VMs through the Hyper-V Manager client on my workstation just long enough to spin up the VMs.  However, after a little while I started getting the "RPC server unavailable. Unable to establish communication between..." message in the "Virtual Machines" list.

I'm able to ping the Hyper-V server, and I'm able to access a network share on the machine using the same local user account that I use for managing the server.

Various functions in the Hyper-V Manager still work. I'm able view the "Hyper-V Settings", "Edit Disk", "Inspect Disk", etc.

Edit: Here is some more information. The local user account is added to the "Administrators" user group and has password expiration set to "never". I noticed that there is a "Hyper-V Administrators" user group that I never noticed before. This user account is not part of this user group.

Hyper-V 2012 Disaster Site Config for NICs

I am in the processing of building a 3-node Hyper-V cluster for our disaster recovery site.  I'm not sure if I will use Hyper-V replica to keep a small subset of VMs available or if I will use our SAN replication to make them available.  I'm trying to figure out what I will need in terms of network connectivity.  The servers have 4 NICs and no open slots on the riser card for expansion.  All VMs will be on the same subnet and they will only be active in the event of a site failure at our main datacenter.  The SAN is connected via FC and there is no need for iSCSI connectivity.  Will the 4 NICs be sufficient and can somebody provide me with a list of what roles each NIC would need in this configuration?

Thanks!

Windows server 2012 networking with UTM in Hyper-V

$

Hi everyone.

I'm having some trouble with my current network set up. Connectivity randomly drops for a moment every now and then, and sometimes completely until I restart the server. Pinging the server times out.

Setup: Windows server 2012 with Sophos UTM 9.1 (built on Linux) running in Hyper-V. I'm using one nic for the virtual switch. There are two virtual adapter for the UTM virtual machine. One for internet connectivity (IP:10.0.0.3) and one for communication between Windows server and the virtual UTM (192.168.1.3). Internet is served by the router (10.0.0.2 - DHCP turned off) The virtual adapter that was created in windows is 192.168.1.1.

I'm using DHCP to assign IP's to the client PC's (192.168.1.101-192.168.1.200)

I've tried changing the set up by connecting the server to the internal network using an unused NIC and using the second nic for the virtual switch, and then bridging the virtual adapter created inside windows with the NIC connected to the internal network. That caused even more connection problems (losing connection with shared folders, but not necessarily with server)

In Hyper-V manager on the networking tab under status it says "Degraded (integration services upgrade required)" Should I change the network adapters to legacy? To me it doesn't make sense that the virtual adapter created in the virtual machine would be the problem. If they were, wouldn't I only lose connectivity to the virtual machine instead of the whole server?

Hyper-V host loses connectivity when a guest VM is started

I have a Hyper-V farm hosted on Windows Server 2012 which is connected to a company network with Internet access. When I start a VM running Windows Server 2012 that is joined to the external network, thehost machine loses connectivity. This does not happen when I start a VM running Windows Server 2008 R2. Can anyone help me to find the problem? Is there any difference in network configuration between Server 2008 and 2012 that could cause it?

I had to configure the VMs to be on a Private network to avoid this issue but I need Internet access on my VMs.

Thank you.

More info on the configuration:

Host: Windows Server 2012 Standard, the machine has 2 sockets for ethernet but only one is connected, IP address and DNS are obtained automatically (default configuration), the machine is in a Workgroup (AD is not available)

Hyper-V Backup (CSV)

$

Microsoft community,

I have built a new Hyper-V cluster with 2 x 2TB CSVs. These will host a range of VMs including SQL, Exchange, Lync, File Server and so on.

My intention is to split VMs across the 2 CSVs - 1 CSV for Operating System, Page File, Binaries and 1 CSV for Data.

e.g.

CSV1

  • ExchangeOS.vhd
  • SQLOS.vhd
  • FileOS.vhd

CSV2

  • ExchangeData.vhd
  • SQLData.vhd
  • FileData.vhd

1. Will this restrict my backup options in anyway? Hyper-V backup (host-level) backup the VM config as well as the VHD. The VM config will be stored on CSV1 with the OS VHD. Can I still backup the Hyper-V host properly with its disks on different VHDs.

2. Any recommendations or advice on whether this is standard?

3. Would I be better to just keep all VHDs (per VM) on the same CSV and not split them?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
