Windows 2012 Hyper-V Manager says Virtual Machine Status "Backing Up" Why?

$

What is going on?

I have 4 VMs running on Windows 2012 Datacenter.   They stopped responding so I took a look at Hyper-V Manager.

The status of the VMs say "Backing up".   I cannot shut the VMs down, either.   Well eventually they STOP, but no save or graceful shutdown.

I have not configured backups.   I've never seen this message before.

The VMs DO have Windows Server Backup installed and DO back themselves up using the Scheduler but they back themselves up to a network volume.   Hyper-V Manager should not know anything about this.

How do I get them out of this state?

Hyper-V Wifi VPN without Host

$

Hi,

This is likely a strange question, and the opposite of what most people would like. I will try to be as clear as possible. Is there a way to allow internet access to a VM on Hyper-V and while not requiring (or allowing) the host access to the connection?

The reason for this is simple. The location from which I am required to connect to the internet requires installation of specific VPN software, which then requires certain security measures be turned on/off. Needless to say I am security conscious and I don't like giving away this type of permission. I would like to spin-up a VM, install their VPN software, and surf the web from there (leaving my Host unmolested). Is there a way to do thiswithout first signing onto the internet from the host? Remember, the whole idea is to not install the VPN software on the Host.

If you have any pointers, or possibly even links to articles regarding this, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your help,

All Hyper V VM s are using 100% CPU

All

We have a windows server 2012 as a hyper v host and 2 VM S SBS 2011 and windows 7 VM

Since this Tuesday the CPU usage is a constant 100% on both VMs and since backups were failing due to high cpu usage rebooted the SBS 2011 server. But even after a reboot/shutdown SBS is at a constant 100% usage

We disabled all non MS services, disabled Exchange, SQL and memory hungry services but the CPU usage is at a 100%.The time it goes down is when we stop all MS /NON MSservices except bare minimal services which needs to run the SBS properly

Even with this the moment we open up a MMC console , open up an application on the server the cpu goes to 10% and remains for a long time and then goes down again

But with all SBS services running it never happens and stays at a 100% even after acouple of hours

Hyper V integration services are up-to-date

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dhanushka

Failover cluste & Active Directory

Hi,

I have working to build new Hyper-V 2012 cluster failover between two virtual machines by SMB shared, I have the below servers that working in internal virtual switch (10.10.10.1) ,

- Active Directory VM with DNS in same server ==> 10.10.10.20
- Two VMs ( node1 and node2 ) ==> 10.10.10.21 and 10.10.10.22
- SMB shared ==> 10.10.10.23

I did the below steps,

1/ In the first I installed Active directory and DNS server for domain ( testclsuter.com ).

2/ installed SMB server shared and the shared paths in: \\SMB\sharedsmb
Also I give my VMs full SMB control permissions.

3/ I install two VMs normally "Not inside SMB", and I joined the VMs to active directory but when I launch the Failover Cluster Manager, I get this warning message, “To manage a failover cluster, you must be logged on with a domain user account. A domain user account is required because you need access to Active Directory Domain Services and to all servers in the cluster, including remote servers.” Also, the only options that appear are View, Properties, and Help. There is no sign of the Validate a Configuration menu option or anything else.

I don't what was the problem, I'm logged as Administrator.

Please your advise.

Dears

I have 2 node cluster with Windows 2008 Hyper-V (No VMM in the environment) and it is connected to a SAN Storage.

I have a requirement to move these VM's to the new storage, whereas both the servers are connected to the new storage via FC HBA.

Would appreciate if you could provide me the steps to perform these tasks also can it be done online or  offline

Can I use the Hyper-V Import/Export Feature to move the VM's and the Quorrum Disk

Also can I do this task in batches such as VM by VM

Kindly advice.

Migrating VM to another 2012 Hyper-v causes Network Adapter to be unknown

Currently have server 2012 running hyper-v. Installed Server 2008 R2 with all updates and service packs. Exchange 2010 installed. Running good, no issues on a Dell 2950. We now have a Dell R720 running server 2012 with Hyper-v. I shutdown the server and copied the VHD files over to the new server. Configured a new Server in the manager and attached the drives. Server boots fine. But there is not network. If I go into a dos prompt and check with ipconfig the adapter is not there. Going into the device manager I can see that the network device is a unknown device. I have uninstalled and rescanned. Tried updating the drivers and get the error that this device is not configured correctly (Code 1). I have tried removing the adapter and installing the legacy adapter. Same thing. I have also tried installing the integration services. And though it tries to install it it hangs on the Windows Framework. I am unable to boot in safe mode, once I try and logon it reboots. So I am stuck. I have installed Server 2012 as guest and it works fine. I have also downloaded Server 2008 R2 Trial and it also works fine. So I am at a loss as what to do. I can't go into Networking and Sharing center as it hangs when I try. Sounds like its an issue with Integration services but you can't uninstall it. I am at a loss. There is no nic teaming going on. I have a quad broadcom Nic (which doesn't work as a virtual switch) as the management, and dual port Intel Nic for the virtual machines.

Hyper-V on Windows 2k12 Wireless ICS

Hi All,

I know this question has been asked multiple times and I've got fairly close to what I want to achieve.

This is the background:

Windows Server 2012 running Hyper-V with an Ubuntu virtual machine. I have a wireless adaptor connected to the server, shared the internet connection with an internal virtual adaptor which the VM is using. The VM has no trouble accessing the internet this way.

My problem is, I want to be able to forward ports directly to the VM and be able to 'see' the VM from other PCs connected to the network. So far I've been unable to do this and I've spent so many hours trying to work it out now.

I tried the method of bridging connections but this didn't help me in this case.

Thanks for any help!

Hyper-V on Win8 new network connection problem

$

My Hyper-V running Win 8.1 under Win8 suddenly lost all network connections claiming IP problems. I say suddenly because everything was working fine until a couple of days ago. I have no idea what caused that sudden failure and I did not find anything about how to address this IP address failure. The network settings tab shows no IP address but claims the connection is ok. Only Win8.1 does not connect. Bummer.

Any suggestions on how to fix that?

In the meantime I went through the somewhat lengthy process of disengaging Hyper-V and run VMware Player. Win8.1 runs just fine there with the network and internet connected.

parallel port Key with Hyper V

Hey all I have a 2 part question about parallel port card and using it with Hyper V.

First, my client has an old billing system that uses a parallel port security key.  His old server is about to die and we are moving him to a new Windows 2012 server.  I have the software running in read-only mode without a problem.

Can I install parallel port card then Map it to the Hyper-v session?

If Yes, does anyone have a Card they would recommend?

The company does make a USB security key, but so far everything I have read says you can not make the USB work.

Have I missed something?

thank you All.

Corrupted VHDX after unexpected server reset.

Hyper-V 2012 server had unexpected reboot.

All exept one VM powered up without issues. This one VM had one VHDX, which is fixed size and this disk became corrupted.

If I try to mount this vhdx to root partition hyper-v, i am getting error: "The disk image is corrupt".

If I try to attach it to VM, getting error: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"

Why this could happen ?

Hyper-V 2012: Remote File Browser -> No items match your search

Hi,

yesterday I installed Hyper-V 2012 Server on a new HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 machine. The Server is joined to a W2K3 Domain, necessary firewall rules are applied. Also I have installed a Win8-Ent machine which is also joined to the AD.

In "Hyper-V Settings..." I wanted to modify the "Virtual Hard Disks" Location. But when I want to browse the remote disks the Explorer Windows shows no drives.

In the address line it shows: -> Remote File Browser -> [servername]

in the left Explorer pane the server is listed. In the right pane there is a message "No items match your search".

I can Access the remote disks using UNC names : \\[servername]\d$

I can create virtual machines using Hyper-V Manager. But it's also not possible to connect an ISO Image to the vm because I cannot browse the remote disks.

Does anyone have an idea how i can access the remote disks?

Thanks

Thomas

Can't install Hyper-V on a Windows Server 2012 Standard Server

We got out Windows 2012 Standard Servers from Dell but on only one server we need to setup the Hyper-V.  First thing I've done is install the Hyper-V and created two VMs.  One VM for web server and the other one for database server.  Done with setting up our application and the three are able to communicate with each other.  After doing the hardening on the two VMs, the setup is still working.  But after doing the hardening on physical server, the Hyper-V cannot run the VMs anymore.  After trying several solutions found on the internet, I'm still unable to solve the problem.  And that's when I decided just to reinstall the Hyper-V.  The Hyper-V is uninstalled successfully but got problems installing it back.  After adding the feature on the Server Manager, the server will restart.  After the first restart, the server will continue the configuration and during that time it will encounter an error and will revert it back.  I've tried reversing the hardening but still no luck.  When I looked at the event logs, I'm encountering this error "A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the vmms service.".  Any idea why am I encountering this error and any solutions to this?  I'll provide additional information if needed.  Thanks.

Server 2012 Hyper-V: I want to convert to fixed disk but it's not intuitive

$

Hi all.  I find myself confused with Server 2012 Hyper-V processes, and design as well.

First, and I'm just curious because it's odd, why when you create a new VM and a new VHDX to go with it, you don't have any choice of making it a Fixed Disk?  Per Microsoft's own Technet articles on the subject, they recommend fixed-sized VHDs for production servers.  Well thankfully production servers account for only a small percentage of the world's server population so forcing people to double their work by converting a newly creatd VHD makes sense!  =P

:) Anyway I saw no way to make it a Fixed disk during creation - I can see some safeguarding concepts in that but is that their main reason for making it that way?

And to my question:  the process seems to be that you Convert the disk, making a 2nd disk in the process and then to tell the VM to use the newly created VHD.  This process hasn't gone successfully for me yet.  I create a new VHDX via this conversion process, give it a slightly different name.  I then Shut Down the VM and edit the VM properties to point to this new disk, which is in the same directory location as the old VHD.  I go to start it up and I get "Boot Failure" (the actual error is longer but it's the standard one).

Thinking taht was odd, I repeated the whole thing again (after deleting previous VMs and VHDs).  This time instead I converted the disk but saved it to a different location on the same physical disk on the server.  I then deleted the VHD that was being used, renamed my new one, copied it over to the same path as where the old one was, and booted the VM.  Nope, can't even get that far, I get  aHyper-V error about the IDE/Atapi account not having permissions.

I have my share of problems with Windows 8 Client Huper-V as well - it just seems this stuff should be easy and yet I am constantly having problems with it at a fundamental usage level nevermind more advanced features.

Thank you for any insight and answers!

Hyper-V 2012 Disaster Site Config for NICs

$

I am in the processing of building a 3-node Hyper-V cluster for our disaster recovery site.  I'm not sure if I will use Hyper-V replica to keep a small subset of VMs available or if I will use our SAN replication to make them available.  I'm trying to figure out what I will need in terms of network connectivity.  The servers have 4 NICs and no open slots on the riser card for expansion.  All VMs will be on the same subnet and they will only be active in the event of a site failure at our main datacenter.  The SAN is connected via FC and there is no need for iSCSI connectivity.  Will the 4 NICs be sufficient and can somebody provide me with a list of what roles each NIC would need in this configuration?

Thanks!
