Virtual Machine Second Adapter keeps failing with Yellow Astrik.

I have a Windows 2012 Data Center Server running multiple Virtual Servers.  One of these is my Mail server.  It is a 2008R2 Virtual server with 2 virtual adapters.  1 for the internal network, 172.*** works ALL the time no problem.  One for the External Network, 12.**** works initially for a few minutes then fails with a Yellow ! and will no longer connect to send mail.  If I DISABLE the External Virtual adapter in the 2008R2 virtual machine, and re-enable, it will work again for awhile then go back to the failed state.

I removed the virutal adapter....re added with a different nic card in the Host and still same results.

Any Suggestions or help?

Very strange problem.

Hyper-v Guests restarted after network cable was removed

Noticed recently that we had to replace one of the network cables on the server (2 ports 1 for vm 1 for server itself), and noticed that the vm's inside that host server did a hard shutdown. Once they were back up saw the awful log windows to enter the reason for hard shutdown/unplanned shutdown.

Also the uptime was reset on all of the guest hyper-v's.

Is it typical behavior for Hyper-vs to do a hard shutdown/power off when network cable connection is lost ? Or is it some glitch I stumbled upon ?

Advice on SAN required

Hi,

I have a dilemma what to do.  I am new in my role and have inherited 2 Dell R300 machines each running 800GB RAID1 local storage and 32 GB of RAM.  The current virtual setup running Server 2008 R2 is done so that all 9 guest OS are on 1 machine, the other machine is not used.

I need to provide some fault tolerance with a SAN but don't want to spend to much.  Can the SMB 3.0 stuff that's new in 2012 actually handle large loads of virtual machines?  Would a cheap iSCSI SAN be a better option?  I require about 5TB of usable storage.

For some extra points... :-)

Once I have some shared storage in place I plan to implement some cluster aware storage.  Does anyone know if there is any hyper-v cluster aware storage around that can back up to off site?

Moving a DC virtualization to main machine

Hi Techies. My sever runs on server 08 r2 that allows for vrtualization. I have a DC running as a virtual machine in one of the virtualizations in the server(has two other virtualizations). I would want to move the DC from inside the virtualizations and have it run in the main machine i.e the other virtualizations run inside it. Is there a way I can do this with minimal interuptions?

Hyper-V replica and iSCSI

Hi All,

Running Server Enterprise 2012.

The issue started with trying to enable replication for Hyper-V replica. A bunch of guest had no issues in enabling replication but then I started to run into issues with servers running iSCSI. After lots of googling I discovered this solution:

http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/282744-windows-2012-hyper-v-replication-issue-with-iscsi

The solution works great for me, except what issues may I encounter down the road by unchecking thebackup (volume snapshot)?  I have done a bunch of looking around and I am now more confused than ever on snapshots.

Thanks.

Failover cluste & Active Directory

Hi,

I have working to build new Hyper-V 2012 cluster failover between two virtual machines by SMB shared, I have the below servers that working in internal virtual switch (10.10.10.1) ,

- Active Directory VM with DNS in same server ==> 10.10.10.20
- Two VMs ( node1 and node2 ) ==> 10.10.10.21 and 10.10.10.22
- SMB shared ==> 10.10.10.23

I did the below steps,

1/ In the first I installed Active directory and DNS server for domain ( testclsuter.com ).

2/ installed SMB server shared and the shared paths in: \\SMB\sharedsmb
Also I give my VMs full SMB control permissions.

3/ I install two VMs normally "Not inside SMB", and I joined the VMs to active directory but when I launch the Failover Cluster Manager, I get this warning message, “To manage a failover cluster, you must be logged on with a domain user account. A domain user account is required because you need access to Active Directory Domain Services and to all servers in the cluster, including remote servers.” Also, the only options that appear are View, Properties, and Help. There is no sign of the Validate a Configuration menu option or anything else.

I don't what was the problem, I'm logged as Administrator.

Please your advise.

import-vm with incompatibility - virtual hard disk not found 40010

hi ,

i was wondering if i can import a vm copied from somewhere else. i get incompatibility issue where it say virtual hard disk not found. i know you can change the vhd location in xml file and it will work or can do it from GUI which will ask you for VHD source if not found in the location mentioned in xml file.  Also if you put the VHD file in sub folder called "Virtual Hard Disks" then it will just work regardless of the vhd location in xml file.

I want to import multiple VMs so don't want to be change xml manually or importing from GUI.

Many thanks.

Hyper-V dropping physical network connection

Here's a good one that hopefully someone can shed some light on.

Just using a test server. Windows 2008 R2 installed hyper-v. This machine just has one NIC on it. I'll create an external network in hyper-v and attach it to that NIC. Start a constant ping to anything on the network and its working fine. As soon as I open up say IE and browse to a webpage of any sort it will start dropping the ping and then also the network card will lose its physical connection to the network. I can actually sit there and see the NIC connection light go out and then come back on. It will continue to go up and down until I stop whatever I am doing on the network. So say if I close IE and wait 30 seconds the connection is back up and the constant ping will go back to working correctly. I've also tried using a different network card in the machine as well and it does the same thing. Anyone run into this before?

Windows 2012 - Unable to move a VM to Hyper-V node - Error: 'A virtual disk support provider for the specified file was not found.'.

Hi all,

I deployed an infrastructure with 4 physical servers including Microsoft Servers 2012 on all of them. (PN01/PN02/PN03/PN04). The storage device is a SAN. (SAS connection)

The configuration is the same for each of them. No error when I run "Validate Cluster". Backup Exec 2012 is installed on PN04.

I have no problem to move the VMs from PN01/PN02/PN03 to PN01/PN02/PN03. I have no problem regarding the daily & monthly backup jobs. But I'm not able to move a VM from PN01/PN02/PN03 to PN04. I've got 3 error messages below:

Error message#1:

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration ServerName' of type 'Virtual Machine Configuration' in clustered role 'ServerName' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

Error message #2

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'ServerName' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

Error message #3

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine ServerName' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'ServerName' failed at migration destination 'PN04'. (Virtual machine ID F2948142-28EF-4729-A901-E**********)

'': Cannot get information for attachment '\\?\Volume{1ff0c1e8-e0b9-11e2-940***********b}\ServerName.vhd'. (Virtual machine ID )

Failed to open attachment '\\?\Volume{1ff0c1e8-e0b9-11e2-940*********}\ServerName.vhd'. Error: 'A virtual disk support provider for the specified file was not found.'.

I know I had to edit the "FsDepends key" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2013544) when we use Microsoft Server 2008. So I applied the same fix but the problem still occurs. I'm checking on internet since last week unsuccessfully. So any suggestion from your perspective ? Has someone the same problem ?

Best regards,

Benoit

Hyper-V 2012: Backup fails with "The number of volumes reverted does not match the number of volumes in the snapshot set for virtual machine"

Hi Everyone,

I've recently P2V'd two Dell servers running Server 2003 R2 to a Hyper-V 2012 box. The configuration of the each server is very similar, each one now having one virtualised disk containing 3 partitions - Dell Utility, Windows, Data. I do a daily backup of the Hyper-V host including the online VMs. One server backs up fine with no issues. However the other server gives me the following error at the beginning of the backup:

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS
Date:          12/06/2013 20:02:52
Event ID:      10112
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      HYPERV01
Description:
The number of volumes reverted does not match the number of volumes in the snapshot set for virtual machine 'SAPServer' (Virtual machine ID C905ECC8-B247-42D7-B986-F5F97FD87B3B).

I don't see any event log errors in the guest vm at this time

I've searched for solutions and most refer to Server 2008 resolving the above with hotfixes, rollups etc. The only one that could possibly be applicable is maybe kb975695 which refers to a disk signature clash. (Sorry- can't post link until my account is verified!). I tried the resolution here but to no avail. I can also successfully mount the vhdx when the vm is offline with no issues.

As an interim measure I decided to do an in-vm backup to a passthough USB drive connect to the above problem vm.

The really curious part is the Hyper-V backup of the online VMs works OK and gives no error when the passthrough disk is attached. So obviously changing the drive configuration seems to do something.

Any ideas ???

Deisceart

Hyper-v 2008 R2 Guest VM current memory usage through perfmon / wmi / snmp or other methods

Is there a way to see how much memory the guest vm is used through perfmon / wmi / snmp or methods including powershell commands.

We have a 2k8r2 hosting server.  5 Virtuals.  All have static RAM assigned to them.  We would like to know how we can view the current RAM usage within the VM from the host server, not from the guest vm (which we already know how to do), through perfmon / wmi / snmp or other methods.

Sound on virtual machine

Hello, specialists,

I want to use sound, spec. Midimapper, for training/creating music scores on my virtual machines with Win7 and Win8, but there is no sounddevice on vm.
The Server, MS Windows Server 2012, has a Creative soundcard, which works fine. The remoteaudio doesn't help. I use Hyper-V and VMM.

Knows anyone a solution of the problem?

Greetings
Andreas

Hello,

i´ ve a HyperV Cluster with two Windows Server 2012 Hyper V Core Edition. They are joined in the Domain. On a physical Domaincontroller is installed the Windows Server 2012. If i try to open the HyperV Manager and connect to one of the two HyperV Host i get allways an RPC Error (The computer HyperV failed to perform the requested operation because the RPC call failed).

The firewalls are off on both HyperV Hosts and on the external DC.

On a Windows 8 PC everything is working fine.

Thank you

Run Virtual Domain Controller in Hyper-V in a workgroup environment

$

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but before I go about trying to implement this, can anyone tell me any problems I might encounter or if this is even a good idea.  I'm trying to setup a test lab to learn Hyper-V.  Here is how I'm thinking of implementing this into my current environment.

Install Hyper-V on a dedicated system with an Intel i5 processor.  Run Hyper-V in a workgroup as no Domain yet exists.  Then install Windows Server 2012 on a virtual machine in Hyper-V and promote it to be a domain controller.  Since the Hyper-V system always runs before the DC is available, it can really never be a part of the Domain correct?  I mean if the DC isn't booted and I need to log in to Hyper-V, it won't authenticate because the credentials can't be verified, is that thinking correct?  Is this possible?  I know ideally that I should have a hardware DC available that's not virtualized and have the Hyper-V join it, but in my environment, this is not possible.

Any input is appreciated.

Best backup software for a virtual environment

Dear all,

I'll implement a virtual basic infraestructure with 2 VM's with an Hyper-V hipervisor. So, I have experience with Backup Exec in a Physical environment, but I think in Virtual infraestructure the things are a bit different.

Then, what solution would you recommend me to backup the VM's? Veam Backup? Backup Exec?, etc...

Thanks for your help.

Windows Server 2012 Teamed Interface only replies to ping from local subnet

I captured packets on Windows Server 2012 when ping the servers teamed interface and the ping succeeds only if you ping from the same subnet. If I ping from another subnet I see the request come in but no reply from network captures.

Hyper-V speraticaly running WinPE very slow

$

I'm not sure how to go about looking into this for a solution. so I thought I'd ask the community. This maybe the wrong forum to ask.

I am developing our deployment system using MTD/WDS to Hyper-V guests (Win7 x64/x86) network boot from WDS.

Sometimes WinPE runs very very slow. Sometimes it runs almost as fast as a bare metel WinPE boot.
Copy Wim from server and initial Wim boot seem normal.
Its after that WinPE slows to a crawl launching MDT BDD and through out WinPE phase of the deployment.

The things running on the server (Server2008 r2 sp1) is Hyper-V, WDS, MTD, MS SQL Server 2005, DHCP, DNS, WSUS.

I see little to no CPU activity and memory usage is under 30%.

Before I religate this to the "Restart System Because of Unknown Issues" category, I wanted to see if there are known issues to cause such speratic behavior.

Thank You,
Greg.

Hyper-V host loses connectivity when a guest VM is started

I have a Hyper-V farm hosted on Windows Server 2012 which is connected to a company network with Internet access. When I start a VM running Windows Server 2012 that is joined to the external network, thehost machine loses connectivity. This does not happen when I start a VM running Windows Server 2008 R2. Can anyone help me to find the problem? Is there any difference in network configuration between Server 2008 and 2012 that could cause it?

I had to configure the VMs to be on a Private network to avoid this issue but I need Internet access on my VMs.

Thank you.

More info on the configuration:

Host: Windows Server 2012 Standard, the machine has 2 sockets for ethernet but only one is connected, IP address and DNS are obtained automatically (default configuration), the machine is in a Workgroup (AD is not available)

Request timed out on hypervhost

$

Hello,

I have a Windows 2012 hyperv host with a network card which I selected during the installation of the hyperv role in order to create the Virtual adapter for my VMs.
After doing so the static IP originally assigned to that card was transferred to the virtual adapter, as any standard HYPERV installation does.

When I ping from any other computer in local subnet the IP address assigned to the virtual adapter I receive an occasional request time out. When I ping from any other computer in local subnet the IP address assigned to any of the virtual machines that use that virtual adapter I don't have any request time out.

Those occasional request time out to the IP of the host create issues for the failover cluster service.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
