Hyper-V Perfomance

I have installed a Hyper-V server on a Dell PowerEdge R720 (128GB)  with Windows 2012 Datacenter. The server has an iSCSI Dell PowerVault MD3600i with 10x15K SAS drives in a RAID 5 configuration.

When I copy between to or from a virtual machine on this hardware I get a maximum copy speed of 111MB/s (roughly 1Gbps). If I copy a file to a separate folder on the same virtual machine I get the same throughput. If I copy the same file between folders on the Hyper-V installation (not in a VM), I get speeds in excess of 700MB/s.

It appears that the copy process is rate limited. I need this copy process to happen at the maximum possible speed. How could I have configured this incorrectly, or is there a bug in this OS? Please help.

Hello.

When i'm trying to connect to VM just half of the window appear. I can't maximize it and do nothing in that window.

VM restart is fixing that for some time, but it's not an option. Any suggestions?

Hyper V replication cycles missed while backup

we have 2 Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V. Both have Hyper-V deployed with 7 VM (actually servers).

The replica server also have Windows Server Backup backing up all HyperV Component and VMs to iSCSI drive. The backup starting at 12:30AM running for about 3 hours. Also I noticed a warning on Replication Health said some replication cycle have been missed and the time in event log is when the backup is running.

How may I backup and keep replication running at the same time without any warning?

thanks in advance

Sound on virtual machine

Hello, specialists,

I want to use sound, spec. Midimapper, for training/creating music scores on my virtual machines with Win7 and Win8, but there is no sounddevice on vm.
The Server, MS Windows Server 2012, has a Creative soundcard, which works fine. The remoteaudio doesn't help. I use Hyper-V and VMM.

Knows anyone a solution of the problem?

Greetings

Hyper V Replica warning

We had setup HyperV replica on the 2 sites locations where each VM initial replication worked fine, however after a day while checking replication health on replica server we get a warning where replica  is behind the primary  for mor e than one hour).

Avg latency is showing up as 16:56

I can see 4 recovery points though.

I found that on Primary - Replication Synchrnization settings default seetting is selected to replicate between 6:30 om to 6 am, is this latency due that?

if not that how do i check what is error and how to fux.

On primray : REplication health shows normal

Dears

I have 2 node cluster with Windows 2008 Hyper-V (No VMM in the environment) and it is connected to a SAN Storage.

I have a requirement to move these VM's to the new storage, whereas both the servers are connected to the new storage via FC HBA.

Would appreciate if you could provide me the steps to perform these tasks also can it be done online or  offline

Can I use the Hyper-V Import/Export Feature to move the VM's and the Quorrum Disk

Also can I do this task in batches such as VM by VM

Kindly advice.

Guest OS of a VM? (through GetSummaryInformation()?)

Reposting this question from MSDN Forums» Windows Server 2008» Server Virtualization  forum since that forum is marked for decommissioning.

I see that many people have issues with GetSummaryInformation() usage. I too am trying to use this interface in my C++ code. My main intention is to get the Guest Operating System of a VM on my Hyper-V Server, given that I know the VM name.

- MSDN seems to have updated the article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc160706(VS.85).aspx. There are examples in C# and VB, but it is not clear to me how I can use it in C++. My main concern is how to pass "
[in] CIM_VirtualSystemSettingData REF SettingData[],". How do I get the VirtualSystemSettingData for a VM that I am interested in? Any query, or interface I can use?

- However, I wanted to see that the interface returns the Guest OS I want and tried a PowerShell script. I was successful there, but I now find that Guest Operating System is not available from this interface if the VM is powered Off. Is this the expected behavior of GetSummaryInformation()? This is a bit odd, considering that I never came across any documentation stating so.

Would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how I can resolve my issues. Or if there is a better approach to get the Guest OS of a VM (may be powered Off) through C++ code?

TIA.

Hyper-v 3.0 VM NPIV WWPNs Switching Fabric Ports

Hi,

I am using virtual fibre channel adapters on VMs in Hyper-v 3.0 and experiencing an issue with one of my storage providers. Basically, I am sometimes seeing LUNs on a VM that they are not presented to. The storage provider thinks that this is because each time the VM restarts, it appears on a different SAN port ID. If multiple VMs restart simultaneously, there is a chance that one VM's WWPN will log in to a port that was previously used by another VM. The storage provider does not seem to recognize this change and continue to present LUNs to the old PID.

This happens with both Qlogic QMH2572 and Emulex LPe1105 HBAs.  I am using Brocade switches running FOS 7.1.0a or FOS 6.2.2f depending on the hardware.

In the Brocade logs, with 'nsdevlog --show -wwpn <vmWWPN>', I see these events. The "Device Del" corresponds to the shutdown of the VM, and "Port Add" to the startup login.

The question is: is this expected behavior? If so, is the problem on my storage provider's side for not picking up on the "Device Del" event?

Thanks,

Matthew

Guest "LUN" disconnects, then re-attaches, around same time every few days

$

We have only one Hyper-V Guest in our Network that has this issue. For some reason the Guest drive D (LUN) seems to disconnect about the same time "every day". I put "every day" in quotes because we have seen this problem before but often things will run fine for a week or so before the problem occurs again. So it isn't truly a regular occurrence. It just happens when it does and then the LUN reconnects as if nothing happened.  I have checked the Guest (and soon HOST) event logs but did not find anything useful as to the cause for the disconnect. Do you have any ideas what else I can check to get to the bottom of this matter?

TIA,

I have a Hyper V cluster setup which includes 5 servers running Windows 2012.  When i try to live migrate between nodes, it errors out with the below message:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine testVM failed.

Any idea, how to resolve this ?

Hyper-V 2012 Linux server turning Read-only

$

Hi,

We have a strange problem of our RHEL servers turning Read-only  with the following errors:

===========================

sd 0:0:0:0: timing out command, waited 60s
Buffer I/O error on device sda2, logical block 36435
lost page write due to I/O error on sda2
Aborting journal on device sda2.
EXT3-fs error (device sda2) in ext3_reserve_inode_write: Journal has aborted
journal commit I/O error
EXT3-fs error (device sda2) in ext3_dirty_inode: Journal has aborted
ext3_abort called.
EXT3-fs error (device sda2): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
Remounting filesystem read-only
journal commit I/O error

=======================

We have set the SCSI timeout to 180s as per the recommendation from Red Hat  and it's still timing out at 60s. Anyone know what this happens ?

Here are the Red hat recommended settings:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[root@bash]# mount
/dev/sdb2 on / type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)
/dev/sdd on /apps type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)
/dev/sdc on /opt type ext3 (rw,barrier=1)

[root@bash]# grep 180 /etc/udev/rules.d/*

/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules: RUN+="/bin/sh -c 'echo 180 > /sys$$DEVPATH/timeout'"

[root@bash# cat  /sys/block/*/device/timeout
180
180
180
180

--------------------------------------------

We have applied the setting above but still it's timing out at 60s and Red Hat recommends to check with Microsoft. Is there any setting in Linux Integration tools on Hyper-V which override this settings ?

What are the best methods to troubleshoot the issues with SCSI on guest OS on Hyper-V level ?

Client Hyper-V: Parent-Child Domain Infrastructure

Good day!

I want to create a parent-child domain infrastructure on a hyper-v client on windows 8 pro. I was able to installed and set-up a domain controller (with DNS, ADDS, DHCP). But I'm not familiar on how I can turn a winserv2008r2 as child. I couldn't find my pre-created domain to connect to it.

How to export all virtual swtches?

Hello,

We are migrating from Hyper-V on Windows 2008 R2 to Server 2012 and I have to recreate all virtual switches, but they are so many it will be excruciating to add them to the new server manually, one by one. Is there a way to export the configuration of all virtual switches? Thanks in advance!

Dear All.....Can anyone list down steps that should be taken from planning as well as implementation point of few in moving a machine either physical or virtual to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 i.e. performance monitoring, IOPS calculation, network throughput requirements, etc......Thanks.

Hyper-V on Windows 2k12 Wireless ICS

Hi All,

I know this question has been asked multiple times and I've got fairly close to what I want to achieve.

This is the background:

Windows Server 2012 running Hyper-V with an Ubuntu virtual machine. I have a wireless adaptor connected to the server, shared the internet connection with an internal virtual adaptor which the VM is using. The VM has no trouble accessing the internet this way.

My problem is, I want to be able to forward ports directly to the VM and be able to 'see' the VM from other PCs connected to the network. So far I've been unable to do this and I've spent so many hours trying to work it out now.

I tried the method of bridging connections but this didn't help me in this case.

Thanks for any help!

X Physical NIC = X Virtual Switch?

$

Hi,

I've been Reading many tutorials about the Hyper-V networking and I have some questions about the relation between physical NIC's and Virtual Switch's related with the network performance.

My question is:

I have one server with 4 physical NIC's and I'll deploy 4 VM's (Exchange, DC, WEB & File Server). Wich is the best practise to gain a better performance? Create a Virtual Switch for each VM? And each Virtual Switch to the appropiate physical NIC's?

NIC_1 = Virtual Switch_1 = VM_1

NIC_2 = Virtual Switch_2 = VM_2

NIC_3 = Virtual Switch_3 = VM_3

NIC_4 = Virtual Switch_4 = VM_4

This 4 VM's will be an external type.

Thanks for your help!
