HyperV Virtual Network not pingable

0
0

I have 2 x Windows server 2008R2 with 2 x NIC card on each server.

Server 1

NIC 1 IP address / subnet / gateway: 192.168.10.15 / 255.255.255.0 / 192.168.10.254

NIC 2 IP address / subnet / gateway: 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0 / <No gateway>

Server 2

NIC 1 IP address / subnet / gateway: 192.168.10.16 / 255.255.255.0 / 192.168.10.254

NIC 2 IP address / subnet / gateway: 192.168.1.2 / 255.255.255.0 / <No gateway>

NIC 1 connect to switch and NIC 2 is using crossover cable to connect each other.

Before adding Virtual Network on HyperV, both server able to ping 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2. However, once created Virtual Network with NIC 2 (on both server), both server can't ping each other (192.168.1.x) anymore.
Allow management operation system to share this network adapter have enabled.

Any idea what happen?

how to uninstall Hyper server 2008 R2

Ok I made a rather dumb mistake I downloaded hyper-v server 2008 r2, I was trying to install Hyper-V itself so I can run labs for my class that require 4 windows 2012 servers at the same time. I ended up installing Hyper-V server 2008 R2 and cannot delete, format or clean the volume/partition that it is on, and I cannot open my dvdrom, since it has no eject button to try and run the OS disk that came with my computer. I do not know if it overwrote/ deleted my previous OS or just added Hyper-V Server R2 as a second OS on a different partition?

HYPER-V DEP for Guest XP for Dongle Setup

Hello,

I am running a Hyper-V Server on Windows Server 2012 with a XP Guest. I need to install a Dongle, but it dosen't work correct, caus seems to depend on DEP.

We hav a USB to LAN Device. With this Device I can connect teh Dongle to Physicla maschiones after editing the boot.ini. On Virtual maschine it does not Work. Is there something the Hyper-V does to the guest?

Hyper V Guest can ping and resolve Host, but cannot browse for files

Hello,

I've spent quite some time finding a solution, but I am about to get clueless.
I will try to define the scenario, hoepfully someone can help:

HP ML350 G6 server
Installed MS Server 2008 R2 as the operating system, installed the same operating system as a VM in Hyper-V.
The VM acts as a Remote Desktop Server.
This setup was done in november 2011 and has worked ever since, really no problems.

However, one week ago i was doing some maintenance on the server.
ON THE HOST: Installed some updates, configured folder redirection for the desktops since they use it to safe files on (they shouldn't though)
and most importantly (I think) i saw in the network and sharing centre the Network Location was set to private or public, I'm not sure. I thought, "hey, that should be set to domain". So i changed it. I don't remember changing anything to the VM, but i'm not sure.
Now a week later i get a telephone call from the customer that they can not log in to the VM using remote desktop.

I guessed a password typo or a small thing would be the case but i couldn't get in through RDP with my own referentials.

Teamviewer was still working (so i had and have internet connection) and i could access the machine within hyper-v.

I have tried a lot of things and searched the whole of internet so to say but to no avail.
So the problem is that i can't access the Fysical server from the VM on a file level (i can not browse to the server) or RDP level. Something is blocking the communication on these levels

  • I can ping the host, gateway or other clients from the VM. I can also ping on FQDN,so DNS is working.
  • Other pc's then the VM can still access and browse the fysical server (i call it serverhost)
  • The VM can access the internet
  • the VM is setup to use a virtual NIC that is assigned to a seperate Fysical NIC in Hyper-V
  • The Host can also ping (FQDN) to the VM, so that works both ways
  • The Host also can not open shared folders on the VM, so that doens't work both ways
  • I've taken the VM from the domain but was not able to re-join it (it did get through but after entering the referentials it said access denied) (did a VM snapshot restore back to the point it was a member of the domain)
  • The error when browsing the host (i just do win+r and type \\serverhost) is "no access to \\serverhost
check for spelling, there might be a problem with the network, click on diagnose problem..." (the problem checker can not help obviously)
  • The VM can browse itself (Win+r \\server01), works fine
  • when i try RDP from a pc to the VM it opens up the LOGIN screen (same green-blue background like when you can enter your name and password) but instead it says Access denied (never saw that!)
  • Trying RDP from the internet does not work at all (but that is probably related to the rest)
  • The event viewer does not say anything in the form of an exclemation mark or error
  • On the host i deleted the virtual NIC several time, bound it to another physical nic, changed IP's, uninstalled/reinstalled network card/drivers...
  • installed the integration service disk on the VM and did a repair
  • I cannot use a restore from the backup since in this week to much changes have taken place
  • I have a strong feeling is has to do with the Network Location Awareness on the Host.
Searched a lot about this and changed a lot, but nothing helped
  • On the host the NLA is set to Domain, it includes both NICS (even after altering the registry and the domain policy security i cannot change the value of the location)
  • Tried to give the virtual nic on the Host also a Default Gateway, but that did not change anything (some say it gives you the possibility to change the location of the NIC. Changed it back to one Gateway.
  • One strange thing is that in the VM, i cannot see the NIC, it shows in Device manager and in ipconfig etc. (i made changes to it with netsh) but it doesn't appear in the change adapter settings box
  • On the Host, in Hyper-V manager, i added a virtual new network card, this one would show up in theadapter settings box.I configured this NIC the same as the other one (after disabling it) but when checking the status it gave me 2 local IP'S. One was 169... Where is he getting this from? could not even access internet or anything with this new NIC.
  • Turned firewalls off and on on both the host and the VM
  • the time is perfectly synchronised between the host and the VM (the time service is checked in Hyper-V)
Since AD is time sensitive, i configured on both machines to use an internet clock (pool.org) (and disable the time service in Hyper-V) as a matter of test, but no succes. Changed it back.

I'm sorry this is such a long post. Luckily in Belgium it is a holiday today and tomorrow, so I have some time to fix it.
(This is a production server)

Any help is greatly appreciated and i can upload pictures or logs if required.

Thank you,

Benjamin

Hyper-v ip address assignment

I have an HP server with four physical NICS. The physical host will take the first NIC.

The second, third, and fourth NICS will be assigned to VM's.

I understand that you only assign IP's to the physical host and then to the vm's. When I say VM's, I mean terminal server into VM and assign them within the VM.

Do I assign any IP addresses to the virtual network cards on the physical hosts? Do I leave them blank with no IP's or assign them in the same IP range as the VM's?

How to Release a Converted VHDX?

I just converted a differencing VHD to a fixed VHD, but when I try to start the VM to which I attached it, I am told it is already in use by another process, effectively stopping the startup.

I looked at Task Manager, but I didn't see ConHost.exe running, so I am believing the Convert-VHD process has terminated.

I shut down the entire Hyper-V server but that didn't release it.

I tried moving the file using Windows Explorer, but it can't because it is in use by something, which validates the original situation.

Ideas?

Hyper-V 2012 RemoteFX Greyed out on Domain joined host

0

Hello,

I'm having a strange problem with RemoteFX on a domain-joined Hyper-V 2012 host.

The RemoteFX graphics card option in Hyper-V settings is greyed out when the host is joined to the domain, but when taken off the domain the option is available and I can select the required graphics card.

This seems to be group policy related, as if I put the Hyper-V host in its own OU and block inheritance (no enforced policies), the RemoteFX graphics card option is again available.

I have spent some time searching the web looking for a solution, but I've only found others with the same problem who never got an answer (or at least not one that was published online). I did some trial and error testing with my group policy, but couldn't find which setting was causing the problem. Even the default domain policy (unmodified server 2012 version) caused RemoteFX to become unavailable.

Has anyone here seen this before? or more importantly, does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Npar & HyperV

Hey all. I have a really odd problem.

I have 2 hosts in a hyper V cluster. I have NPAR going on a Broadcom NIC. so 8 partitions. I am only using 3 of them. I disabled the rest.

I have setup one partition for the host. One for the VMs and one for live migration between the 2 hosts.

The host partition and VM switch partition are on the same VLAN untagged.

The problem I am having is I cannot ping the host from a VM the host is running!

If I live migrate the VM to the other host I can suddenly ping the original host it was running on but not the new host it's on now.

It's like NPAR is not allowing the VM switch partition to ping the host partition??

VHDs on SMB-share error

Has anyone else had any problems storing vhd's and vm-config on SMB-shares?

The smb-shares are highly available on a scale-out file server.

I have some VM's that crash a few times a day with the errors:

Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Config/Admin

The Virtual Machines configuration 33EPL458-1RE7-938E-BAAF-AFF3PFE1A678 at '\\server\VMs\VM01'  is no longer accessible: A device attached to the system is not functioning. (0x8007001F).

then this:

The Virtual Machines configuration 33EPL458-1RE7-938E-BAAF-AFF3PFE1A678 at '\\server\VMs\VM01'  is now accessible.

Can it be some timeout settings?

I made Hyper-V virtual external network switch and specified Wifi adaptor.

But, during configuration, windows2012 make automatically Network Bridge and Wifi adaptor IP setting got disabled and not-configurable.

I tried to configure Network Bridge IP setting and virtual ethernet adaptor but it was not reflected and could not access to internet.

How could I configure Hyper-V network so that host win2012 and guest win2008R can use and access to internet by Wifi adaptor ?

Hyper V virtual machines unable to capture mouse pointer

Hi All ,

I came across weird issue last week. I have two 2008 R2 Hyper V hosts. Each of the hosts have around 15 virtual machines running. One fine day , i found that virtual machines have stopped capture mouse pointer.

everything was running fine day before. I used to access the virtual machines from Hyper V manager. There was no changes nor any reboots. Suddenly virtual machines stopped capturing mouse pointer. Keyboard capture worked.

Say out of 15 virtual machines atleast 10 faced the similar issue. Most of the VM were 2008 R2 and few were 2003. It should be issue of Integration Services component as everything was working fine before.

Only way out for me was reset the virtual machines , which got there issue resolved. Luckily they were DR servers , so i could afford reboot. I also tried to RDP into those virtual servers , still no go.

I did check out the event viewer , especially the Hyper V logs , but couldnt find anything.

Hyper-V Server 2012 - Does Not Allow for Secure Boot?

0

Hyper-V Server 2012 (server core) does not appear to support Secure Boot?  Is this true?

Various webpages imply that Windows Server 2012 (and Windows 8) both support Secure Boot which would imply Secure Boot ought to also work on Hyper-V Server 2012?  (I was unable to locate any definitive answer to that question.)

I am using an Intel DQ77MK motherboard.  I am able to successfully install Hyper-V Server 2012 using UEFI.  (I confirmed UEFI by opening C:\windows\panther\setupact.log and looking for "Detected boot environment: EFI.")

But if I setup the motherboard BIOS to enable SecureBoot, prior to re-installing Hyper-V Server 2012, I don't get anything on my screen.  It is unclear if the system hung, but I don't get any error message and am unable to install the OS.  So there seems to be some compatibility problem between enabling Secure Boot and Hyper-V Server 2012?  (In case you're wondering.  I have the latest Intel BIOS installed on my motherboard.)

In doing some research I came across the Powershell command - Get-SecureBootPolicy

But when I try and execute that command on Hyper-V Server 2012 I get the following error message -

The term 'Get-SecureBootPolicy' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program.

I came across the get-module command.  I noticed different results on my Windows 8 PC -

PS C:\> get-module

ModuleType Name                                ExportedCommands
---------- ----                                ----------------
Manifest   Microsoft.PowerShell.Utility        {Add-Member, Add-Type, Clear-...
Binary     SecureBoot                          {Confirm-SecureBootUEFI, Form...

versus my Hyper-V Server 2012

PS C:\> get-module

ModuleType Name                                ExportedCommands
---------- ----                                ----------------
Manifest   Microsoft.PowerShell.Management     {Add-Computer, Add-Content, C...
Manifest   Microsoft.PowerShell.Utility        {Add-Member, Add-Type, Clear-...

It looked as though I might need to install something in order to get Get-SecureBootPolicy to run on Hyper-V Server 2012?  I tried running Import-Module SecureBoot but got this error message -

The specified module 'SecureBoot' was not loaded because no valid module file was found in any module directory.

So unless a different module name is required there does not appear to be any way for me to install the cmdlet on Hyper-V Server 2012?

The list of PowerShell 3 Cmdlets, as found here -

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4694.powershell-3-cmdlets.aspx?Sort=MostRecent&PageIndex=1

looked as though it ought to be possible to perform a UEFI install and then setup the BIOS to enable Secure Boot.  I had trouble getting the system to boot, but after several attempts I finally got it to come up.  But given none of the other cmdlets I tried worked I cannot tell if Secure Boot is really enabled.  I thought that after several failed boot attempts perhaps the BIOS reverted/regressed some configuration that allowed me to boot the system, but which effectively disabled Secure Boot?

All of which leads me to believe that Hyper-V Server 2012 (server core) does not support Secure Boot?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

VLAN configuration Hyper V

0

Experts,

I have limited NICs available to me on my Hyper V host servers. I know what the optimal configuration should be for VLAN configuration (but unfortunately don't have the NICs available) so I want to know the implications of not having separate VM and Management networks.

My plan would be to have VM and Mgmt VLANs together on a teamed NIC (on the live network).

Virtualizing with multiple physical drives and volumes

I have a server with 2 physical drives and 4 logical volumes. C:, the OS volume is its own drive with 1 logical volume. The 3 other logical volumes are on the 2nd physical drive.

Will DISK2VHD create a single VHD for all volumes or should they be separated and added to the Hyper-V virtual machine as they are? Is there a "best practice" when it comes to Hyper-V VMs and multiple volumes?

Thanks in advance!

Hyper-V 2012: Replication fails to automatically resume after a server reboot

0
0

Hello,

I have a VM lab with Windows 2012 and Hyper-V. Overall it has been awesome, but I have one small glitch:

The VMs on server A replicate to server B. The new Hyper-V replication feature works perfectly, except for my one problem. When I shut down and then restart the servers, replication does not always automatically resume for all VMs. Some VMs will resume replication on their own and some will require a manual resume - and it seems to be random. I can always restart replication by right clicking and the hitting Replication --> Resume Replication, but I rather hoped that this would happen automatically, all of the time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a cure?

All Hyper V VM s are using 100% CPU

All

We have a windows server 2012 as a hyper v host and 2 VM S SBS 2011 and windows 7 VM

Since this Tuesday the CPU usage is a constant 100% on both VMs and since backups were failing due to high cpu usage rebooted the SBS 2011 server. But even after a reboot/shutdown SBS is at a constant 100% usage

We disabled all non MS services, disabled Exchange, SQL and memory hungry services but the CPU usage is at a 100%.The time it goes down is when we stop all MS /NON MSservices except bare minimal services which needs to run the SBS properly

Even with this the moment we open up a MMC console , open up an application on the server the cpu goes to 10% and remains for a long time and then goes down again

But with all SBS services running it never happens and stays at a 100% even after acouple of hours

Hyper V integration services are up-to-date

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hyper-V VM Network Configuration

0
0

Ignoring Storage, CSV, Migration networks, I have a question regarding the planning of my VM and Management networks. I am planning on using two exclusive NICs for my Management and VM networks.

I do not with to create a subnet for Management Network. I do not with to create an additional VLAN.

The plan:

NIC A will be configured only with Microsoft Virtual Network Switch Protocol and no IP assigned. This will patched directly to a switch port on the Live Network 192.168.1.0/24 - This will form my VM NETWORK

NIC B will be configured with the typical Protocols (IP4, IP6, File Sharing etc.) and will have an IP assigned in the 192.168.1.0/24 range and again, will be patched directly to a switch port on the Live Network 192.168.1.0/24. This will form my MANAGEMENT NETWORK.

Is this feasible?

My understanding is that having 2 NICs on the same subnet isn't practical? However, in this case the Management network is on the Live Network range (and has an IP) but the VM Network doesn't have an IP assigned i.e. it is patched directly to the Live Network range but is merely acting as a Layer 2 switch.

Hyper V home lab static addressing/ DHCP issue

0

i am trying to set up a home Server 2008 R2 lab with Hyper V so I can work my MCTS lab assignments and always run into the same problem.  I have to set a static IP for the server hosting the DHCP and DNS services within Active Directory.  However, my router already has DHCP enabled which means I cannot set up DHCP on my lab server and then create VMs to simulate a network and ping connectivity.  I've disabled DHCP on my router but that doesn't change the fact that I cant find the right default gateway/static address/DNS address combination to be able to go forward.  In class my instructor simply says to "choose any ip address you want" and I have to fend for myself.  I tried going by the book and setting the first server to 192.168.100.1xx (where xx is supposed to be 1 of up to 50 numbers representing individual students in the class).  The books states to use 192.168.100.250 for the default gateway and then has (or whatever your network requires) which needs clarification.  Then they want the preferred DNS server to be 192.168.100.200 which also doesn't work.  So yeah, if you are as confused as I am by now I can move on to the next bit.  I went to the Network connections page and have 3 items.  The hardwired router, the virtual LAN connection, and my NIC.  I am confused as to what to set my VMs to.  Do they need to be internal connections or External?  What is the default gateway?  Is it my router which is 192.168.0.1?  Is that what i set my main server to that the others VMs feed off of?  Is that the preferred DNS server setting as well?
