Unabel to setup remote desktop access to isolated HyperV lab

$

Hey Guys,

I have an isolated HyperV lab made of 5 VMs which are in fact copies of live production VMs.
The lab is made of 4 SharePoint VMs + 1 DC and is working fine on its own. All VMs are connected to the same private HyperV network. Because these VMs are SAN copies of live machines, they can never communicate with the company LAN.

I now need to provide RDP access to the lab. We've first tried to use the HyperV manager to connect to the lab, which works fine, but is not comfortbale to use and only allow on connection at the time per VM.

So the idea is now to setup the host as a Terminal Server, the developpers can then RDP to the host and hop with a 2nd RDP to any VM in the lab.

My idea is to implement the following setup :

The Remote Desktop Services have been installed and configured, but I have the following issue: I cannot RDP to the host as soon as I enable the virtual NIC connected to the internal hyperv network. It's like of the traffic was not routed in the corrected direction. When that NIC connected to the internal hyper network is enabled, I cannot ping any machine from production and I must connect through iLO to manage the host (iLO = HP's console). As soon as I disable the NIC connected to the internal hyper network everything works fine again (except that I cannot of course reach my lab).

I've tried to play a bit with the order of the NIC in the avanced settings, but this didn't help.

What am I missing here ?

Thanks in advance for your help and have a nice day

How to create a new vm using NEW-VM cmdlet from my host to another host in the cluster

Hi guys, in windows 2008r2, i was using the Hyperv powershell module on codeplex by jamesone, there i was able to create New-VM in host X by running the comand from Host Y, by using the server parameter.

But in windows server 2012, although i appreciate microsoft for such rich set of cmdlets, im restricted to creating only in my host, there is no server parameter, and leave about creating VM's, i cant even  start or Stop VM's which are there in another Host.

can any one help me here, ...

Hyper V guest slow disk access

I have a Hyper V cluster(2012) with a 2012 guest running 2012 acting as my file server.

My 2 hosts are connected to a gig switch stack which in turn is connected to my Dell MD3200i.

My file server has a "data" disk that is a VHD(fixed) on the iSCSI storage. As is it OS(dynamic)

I'm coping 200GB right now and only seeing data thoughtput of 8MB/sec.

When I check perfrmance on the file server the disk queue is huge. But when I check the queue for C: on the host, which is where the cluster storage appears to sit, its got a low if not no queue.

Also did a copy using the host and saw 58MB/sec so I'm happy the network should be able to pass the data.

Switch CPU is at 5%

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Rename VM Network Adapter

I'm trying to use Add-VMNetworkAdapterAcl to specify a rule for a particular network adapter. Unfortunately it seems all the vm network adapters have the same name, and can't be renamed - thus if I specify -VMNetworkAdapterName "Network Adapter" the rule gets added for both my network adapters, if I omit this parameter, it only gets added to the "last" network adapter. Also it doesn't seem to be a way to specify the adapter by MAC address.

PS C:\Users\administrator.FABRIKAM> Get-VMNetworkAdapter -VMName "Virtual 2008 1"

Name            IsManagementOs VMName         SwitchName MacAddress   Status IPAddresses
----            -------------- ------         ---------- ----------   ------ -----------
Network Adapter False          Virtual 2008 1            00155D647100        {}
Network Adapter False          Virtual 2008 1            00155D647101        {}

Someone already asked the same question here, yet it seems the answers there are talking about the adapter name inside the virtual machine itself, which is not what I'm after.

Hyper-V "Failed to import a virtual machine"

$

This feels very much like a repeat of other questions, but I've been through the forums and can't find an answer.

We have two Hyper-V servers: one is Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-v installed (not core, the full server installation) the second is Hyper-V server 2008-R2.

I created a Virtual machine on server 1 (call it VMH1) to upgrade our Dynamics SL installation, so it has SQL Server on it as well. Using the Hyper-V Manager, I shut down the VM and exported the VM. That took about 20 minutes and finished with no errors. I then copied the export files to VMH2, the Hyper-V Server (which took about an hour) and ran the import there. Got the "Import file format error" which seems to have happened frequently with the 2008 RTM version, but everyone agrees was fixed with 2008 R2. The .exp files don't have server names in them.

So, I created a brand-new VM running Windows Server 2008 on VMH1, joined it to the domain, etc, then shut it down and exported it, moved it to VMH2, and imported it successfully. So, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the fundamental export-import procedure, I just can't export our actual production VM server to the other VMH.

An additional complication is that since VMH2 is core, there's no GUI, so I am running the Hyper-V manager on VMH1. Can't find any error messages or anyplace where the errors would be written on either server.

What do I do?

Hi,

I read about this issue on some forum. Its permission issue.  But what i want is to execute move-vm on remote host without passing credentials or creating new session. I want to avoid to get-credetials and entering them in popup window.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V nics and othe virtualized hardware

Hi,

I am looking for a list of virtualized NICs in Hyper-V and which drivers I will need.

Which NICs virtualized in Hyper-v for Guests OSs?

i will be glad to get a link to a refrence of virtualized hardware list in Hyper-v.

BTW, does Hyper-V has support for paravirtualized guests?

Thanks,

Is possible to remove the Hyper-V role from Windows Server 2008 R2 and re-enable again ?

How do I delete old VHD files off a hyper V host machine

$

I have created several test VMs and moved a production VM away from a particular host machine.  the only remaining VM cannot start do to a lack of disk space.  there should be plenty, the problem is all of the old unused vhd files. But I cannot figure out how to delete them.  the Hyper-V Manager only allows me to select them.

I certainly have to be missing something simple.

Kerberos Live Migrations Fail with 0x80090322

I am testing HyperV migration between Server 2012 servers. I've set the migration to use Kerberos, and I have added the cifs and Microsoft Virtual System Migration delegation from Server1 to Server2. (And in reverse for migrations back if needed)

When I attempt to migrate from Server1 to Server2 I get the following error:

The eventlog on the server I am Migrating From has the following error:

The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server Server1$. The target name used was Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service/Server2. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client. This can occur when the target server principal name (SPN) is registered on an account other than the account the target service is using. Ensure that the target SPN is only registered on the account used by the server. This error can also happen if the target service account password is different than what is configured on the Kerberos Key Distribution Center for that target service. Ensure that the service on the server and the KDC are both configured to use the same password. If the server name is not fully qualified, and the target domain  is different from the client domain , check if there are identically named server accounts in these two domains, or use the fully-qualified name to identify the server.

I have verified that the SPNs for 'HOST/Server2' and 'Microsoft System Virtual Migration Service/Server2' exist in the attribute editor for the server I am migrating to. I have also verified that the firewall is off on both servers.

10Gb San Nics show slow speeds to VM's but ok Host to Storage

$

Ive got a 2012 Storage server, running 10Gb nic to a HyperV host also running 10Gb. The Host is running 10Gb to the LAN.

Transfer rates between the host and the storage server on a direct copy are running around 5-6Gbps however if I attach a VHDX on the storage server (SMB 3.0 share) to the host and start the VM the transfer rate is about 300-400mbps.

Ive enabled SR-IVO on the nic and I thought that visibly made a difference however the task manager is not reporting that increase and still reports 300-400mbps

Both the host and the storage server have 1Gb management nics but I have made 100% sure that the traffic isn't going up those ports, using IP instead of host names and also setting host files on both machines to reflex to SAN subnet. The management ports report kbps when the 10Gb is reporting mbps.

Anybody shed any light?

Tim

Packets sent out the wrong Interface on Hyper-V 2012 Failover Cluster

$

Here is some background information:
2 Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V in a Failover Cluster environment.  Each has:
1 NIC for Live Migration 192.168.80.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for Cluster Communication 192.168.90.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for iscsi 192.168.100.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for host management with a routable public IP (*connected to corp network) w/ gateway on this interface
1 NIC for Virtual Machine traffic (*connected to corp network)
All NICs are up, we can ping the IPs between servers on the private network and on the public facing networks.  All functions of hyper-v are working and the failover cluster reports all interfaces are up and we receive no errors.  Live migration works fine.  In the live migration settings i have restricted the use of the 2 NICs (live migration or cluster comm).

My problem is that our networking/security group sees on occasion (about every 10 minutes with a few other packets thrown in at different times) syn packets that are destined for the 192.168.80.3 interface goes out of the public interface and is dropped at our border router.  These should be heading out of the 192.168.80.x or 192.168.90.x interfaces without ever hitting our corporate network. Anyone have an idea of why this might be happening?  Traffic is on TCP 445.

Appreciate the help.
Nate

Fix a WiFi Hyper-V Switch

$

I am getting a "Failed while adding Virtual Ethernet switch connections"  when trying to establish a virtual switch over a WiFi connection which I had previously used.  The details say "Ethernet port {GUID} bind failed.  The requested resource is in use. (0x800700AA).  "

Uninstalling and reinstalling the WiFi adapter changed the value of the GUID but still same error message.

There is no vEthernet adapter showing in the adapter properties window. My assumption is that the adapter is hidden from view in the window and / or there is some binding stored in some xml files or registry keys someplace linked to the Virtual Switch that needs to be manually cleaned.  However, I have not yet found where these are.

Has anyone figured out a good way to resolve this issue?

Hyper-V Guest Has Correct Date/Time but Still Reports Time Issues

$

I recently built a Hyper-V host and installed one guest machine on it. The Host has no issues whatsoever. The Guest, however, has odd time issues that I cannot seem to fix. Below are the specs for the environment:

Host: Dell PowerEdge R720 running Windows Server Datacenter 2012 Core, Hyper-V
In our perimeter network, non-Domain joined, NTP sync from internal NTP server on network (confirmed working)

Guest: Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter
Non-Domain joined, NTP sync from internal NTP server on network (confirmed working)

I installed the Guest from a standard 2008 R2 (non-SP1) ISO image from our Volume License. After installation, I modified the policy (gpedit.msc) and pointed Windows Updates to our internal WSUS server (exact same configuration as the Host which updates with no issues), but I receive the 80072f8f error which all searching indicates there is a time synchronization issue. Time Synchronization in Integration Services is turned off, the Guest and the Host are both synchronizing with the same NTP server (w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:<IP> /syncfromflags:manual /update) and the Windows Time service is started and set to Automatic start. The Guest will update just fine from Microsoft's update servers, but not our WSUS.

To be clear, this is not isolated to WSUS. This Guest is a web server running BitNami's WAMP stack and using Memcache. Memcache session management fails on the server because it reports the time is off. I have confirmed mltiple times that the Guest time is the exact same (to the second) as every other server in the building and the same time zone. All I can find online are Root Certificate updates (not applicable, but I tried it anyways and still no go) and the Make Sure Your Time is Correct fixes (which it 100% is).

The issue presented itself prior to any configuration of the server beyond Name, IP, and NTP so nothing 3rd party is interfering. All updates available from Microsoft have been installed and the problem persists. I am not sure what else to look at. I have never seen this issue with other Hyper-V hosts, but this is my first 2012 host in the environment. The Host is also fully patched, by the way and has no time issues at all. The Host BIOS is also correct.

Has anyone else seen this or do you have any ideas on how to fix this problem? It is a real showstopper due to the memcache issue. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hyper-V 2012 Replica Initial Replication Failure

$

Hi All:

We have had success running several H-V Replica jobs from US location to UK location.   However the largest VM (almost 1TB) was first attempted via dropping files onto a storage device, importing into destination server and it did not work.   We then tried to replicate via the network and are now getting this error.

Any insight into cleaning this up would be greatly appreciated.

Stand Alone Hyper-V and Domain Joining

This may be a stupid question but here goes.  I have deployed a single stand-alone Hyper-V server with Windows 2012 Server as a VM.  In a book I am reading on Hyper-V it tells me in the installation of the first Hyper-V Server to have it join the domain.  I have been using this server for awhile and just recently tried to move it from a workgroup to my present domain with a domain controller already established.  When I did this I lost communication with my online storage which houses my VM's which also has joined the domain.  I know this is a basic configuration issue.  Eventually I will have to do some Live Migrations which will need configuration form Active Directory.  Should my first Hyper-V server be in the domain?  Can I perform Live Migrations without my Hyper-V Servers being in the domain?  How should this be configured?

Replication used to seed live migration?

$
0
0

I will start this question by saying I am pretty sure what I am asking is not "Best Practice" and I am not sure it is even supported but I wanted to find out if it is possible.

Scenario:

Server 1 running WS2012 Hyper-V and hosting VM1.  Replica of VM1 is sent to Server 2 also running WS2012 Hyper-V.  These servers are shared nothing but are connected via 1 Gbps LAN.  Can you live migrate from server 1 to server 2 and avoid disk migration time by using the existing replica as a seed?

You might ask why in the world would you do this?  I know all the details of replicas are for DR (in theory WAN based DR) and live migration is for local.  That being said I have a single production server that runs everything but I have an older server with slower proc and disk but enough ram to work short term and is better than downtime.  I am using replicas to this older server as a poor mans local HA and then have offsite backup for DR.  I don't have shared disk nor the funding right now to acquire it to do a cluster and I am not sure I want to cluster it anyway.  If I want to take down the primary server for service / patching it would be great to quickly live migrate to replica server for a short term then allow reverse replication and then initiate live migration back.

Thanks for any thoughts or info.  Also if this doesn't work in WS2012 any changes coming in WS2012R2?

Data recover from snapshot file - AVHDX

$

Hello All

I have a problem in that my Hyper-V server crashed corrupting one of my client VM's. Luckily I had done an export recently and was able to get this back online quickly. My problem is data recovery. I'd like to get some data off the VM client that didn't boot but it appears to have snapshots (mixture of VHDX and AVHDX files). Im not aware of taking any and none were and are shown in the snapshot area of the Hyper_v manager.

Is there any way I can mount these files (at present I can't right click and mount as I can with a normal VHDX) to get the data?

Also I'd like to be rid of the AVHDX file and revert to the basic VHDX but how can I when the system does not show it has any snapshots??

Hope that makes sense!

thanks!!!

Cluster Shared Volumes are offline

I have a two-node cluster using Hyper-V Server 2012 and all my CSV volumes went offline from nowhere. And i'm having problems to bring them back online.

All of the cluster resources are online. Other thing, my Active Directory is offline too, since it runs into the Hyper-V cluster
