DHCP issues with VM/Win Serv 2003/CentOS Laptop

Hola!

The issue I am having is allowing a laptop, loaded with CentOS, on my network to acquire an IP address from a Windows Server 2003 VM that has DHCP server enabled of 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10. The Win Serv 2003 VM is loaded on top of a Win 7 desktop connected to my network. The CentOS laptop also has to aqcuire the IP address by transiting a Cisco switch and 2 Cisco Routers before reaching the DHCP server.

- The Win 2003 VM is configured for 'bridged'.

- The CentOS laptop ifcfg-eth0 file has been configured to include a host name, dhcp, etc......as well as configured as a DHCP server.

What else do I need to do to make this work?

Issue with Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1 upgrade to Hyper-V 2012

Hello,

I am trying Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1 (CORE Installation) upgrade to Hyper-V 2012 (CORE). but i am receiving error . Can anybody provide information on below curiosity.

1. Is windows upgrade functionality works on core installation (Non GUI) of Hyper-V OS.

2. How to differentiate between Hyper-V 2008 R2 and Hyper-V 2008 SP1.

Hyper-V "Failed to import a virtual machine"

This feels very much like a repeat of other questions, but I've been through the forums and can't find an answer.

We have two Hyper-V servers: one is Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-v installed (not core, the full server installation) the second is Hyper-V server 2008-R2.

I created a Virtual machine on server 1 (call it VMH1) to upgrade our Dynamics SL installation, so it has SQL Server on it as well. Using the Hyper-V Manager, I shut down the VM and exported the VM. That took about 20 minutes and finished with no errors. I then copied the export files to VMH2, the Hyper-V Server (which took about an hour) and ran the import there. Got the "Import file format error" which seems to have happened frequently with the 2008 RTM version, but everyone agrees was fixed with 2008 R2. The .exp files don't have server names in them.

So, I created a brand-new VM running Windows Server 2008 on VMH1, joined it to the domain, etc, then shut it down and exported it, moved it to VMH2, and imported it successfully. So, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the fundamental export-import procedure, I just can't export our actual production VM server to the other VMH.

An additional complication is that since VMH2 is core, there's no GUI, so I am running the Hyper-V manager on VMH1. Can't find any error messages or anyplace where the errors would be written on either server.

What do I do?

Hyper-V cluster validation fails

Hi. We have a 3-node Hyper-V cluster (WS 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter) and we want to add 4th node. When I run cluster validation, the report contains error:

"Failed to get SCSI page 83h VPD descriptors for cluster disk 1 from node node1.domain.local status 2"

despite having KB2531907 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2531907/en-us) hotfix installed on all 3 nodes of the cluster.

Since MS claims they don't support clusters that don't pass validation tests, how can I fix this error (when KB2531907 didn't fix the problem)?

Disclaimer: I tried to create this post in the "Windows Server (Partner)" forum, but when creating the post, the forum category doesn't offfer me such option, so feel free to move it to the correct subforum.

Microsoft Hyper-V Role based remote management.

Hi Forum,

We are running hyper v 2012. Our requirement is to create bare VM's and assign VM to users so that the user shall have control over their VM.

I tried installing hyper v manager in client machines but they have access to all the VM and other features.

We want to know whether it is possible to install hyper v manager on client machines and give access only to their respective VM's (ie, only their respective VM's should be visible or they should have control only over their VM)

Regard's

DHCP DNS scavenge records multiple NICs

What is the best practice for a server that has multiple NICS and DNS records. I have a hyper-v host server with multiple NICs. If my Windows DNS scavenges records then it says that dns A record has changed. Should i set all but one of the NICs to not register with DNS? Thanks.

Hyper-v 2012 NIC Teaming

Dear Forum,

I have created a NIC Teaming in hyper-v 2012 with Two 1G onboard NIC and one 10G PCI NIC

I have set teaming mode - switch independent,Load balancing mode -Address hash, stand by adapter- all active and all my nic are connected to same external switch.

with this configuration my total bandwidth is 1+1+10= 12 G am I right ? If this is the case the packets will flow through all the three NIC's and should I make any changes in external switch.

Hyper-V on 2012 host compressed drive

I just noticed that on my 2012 host server, the drive where I have been placing my VM hard drives is compressed. I can imagine that this is not desirable on many levels, so I would like to turn off the compression setting for the drive.

What do I need to watch out for? I am thinking that if I shutdown each VM first, before I turn off compression, it should be fairly safe.

HyperV NIC Configuration

I am having some difficulty with a HyperV host and I wanted to be sure that my understanding of how HyperV deals with NICs is correct.

The server has 3 NICs and 2 of them have been identified to HyperV through the Virtual Network Manager. Both also have the "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" selected. I understand that the best practice says that this should not be selected, correct? If I deselect it, will that cause any loss of communication with the VMs?

One thing I don't understand is the listing of NICs in the Network Connections section of the Control Panel. I was of the understanding that, if you select the "Allow management ..." option, there will be 2 NICs listed in Network Connections - one to represent the physical NIC and the other to represent the virtual switch NIC for each NIC thus configured. On this server, though, that is only true for one of the NICs. The other NIC is only represented by the virtual NIC, not the physical one. Is that the way it is supposed to be?

The problem with this server that drew my attention in the first place is that it will work fine for a few weeks and then you lose the ability to access the host remotely. The NIC says that everything is fine but you can't ping out from it or access it at all. The only solution is to reboot it and it will be fine for another couple of weeks. Any suggestions as to what might cause this behavior?

Thanks

Bert

Hyper V guest slow disk access

$

I have a Hyper V cluster(2012) with a 2012 guest running 2012 acting as my file server.

My 2 hosts are connected to a gig switch stack which in turn is connected to my Dell MD3200i.

My file server has a "data" disk that is a VHD(fixed) on the iSCSI storage. As is it OS(dynamic)

I'm coping 200GB right now and only seeing data thoughtput of 8MB/sec.

When I check perfrmance on the file server the disk queue is huge. But when I check the queue for C: on the host, which is where the cluster storage appears to sit, its got a low if not no queue.

Also did a copy using the host and saw 58MB/sec so I'm happy the network should be able to pass the data.

Switch CPU is at 5%

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Where to install Remote Desktop Services.?

I have been working on documentation on how to install Hyper-V on a HP ProLiant, and have it pretty much finished.. But one thing is baffling me...

Server has Windows 2012 and Hyper-V installed as the Management OS. In Hyper-V, I have one virtual Windows 2012 server that is domain controller / DHCP / DNS for the network... The Management OS is a domain member server and I am logged in as the Domain Administrator.. I set up remote desktop services on the Management OS, assigning it all of the required roles (Connection Broker etc etc).. Then I create a Personal Desktop Collection (again on the Management OS) using a sysprepped Windows 7 virtual machine in Hyper-V. Then the users then log in to the Management OS IP/hostname from the browser to access their Personal desktop.

I have read that some people set up RDS on one of the virtual machines, and assign the virtual machine all the roles, but I dont understand how this can work as the sysprepped machines are sitting on the Hyper-V server.. But I also understand that no services other than Hyper-V should be running on the Management OS... What is the best way to set this up for a small business where only one/two users will be accessing personal virtual desktops..

thanks,

Hyper V Team NICs Connection issue

I have setup Hyper V using Windows Server 2012, newbie here, with 1 onboard NIC for management and installed two D-Link DGE-530T Gigabit Ethernet Adapters for my virtual machines. I teamed the installed NICs, using the Switch Independent and Hyper V Port drop downs and all is well, it created an adapter and it received an IP address from the LAN.

When I create a Virtual Switch using the External option, I choose the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver from the drop down, the switch is created successfully. Now the issue I'm having is that when I check the details in the Virtual Switch's Adapter, everything is blank and when I look at the properties the only check boxes that are checked are Microsoft Load Balancing/Failover Provider and Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch. I have a Windows 7 VM that gets no IP address.

I'm looking to create 3 more Windows 7 virtual machines for remote users to be able to access all our physical servers and work from home instead of using up physical computers.

Help please.

Hyper-v 2012 Backing up... Issue

Hi All,

So I have been experiencing some pain lately with my VM's being put in saved state while backing up. I currently backup all VM's via other means and would like to disable the Hyper-V automated backup as I can not even determine when the backup happens.

Also while the VM's are backing up I can not edit the settings or even login to the VM this is a problem as I have users who come in to use their VM's and they can not do so.

Is there a way to stop the automated backup so that my other software can backup the VM's

Thanks

Data recover from snapshot file - AVHDX

$

Hello All

I have a problem in that my Hyper-V server crashed corrupting one of my client VM's. Luckily I had done an export recently and was able to get this back online quickly. My problem is data recovery. I'd like to get some data off the VM client that didn't boot but it appears to have snapshots (mixture of VHDX and AVHDX files). Im not aware of taking any and none were and are shown in the snapshot area of the Hyper_v manager.

Is there any way I can mount these files (at present I can't right click and mount as I can with a normal VHDX) to get the data?

Also I'd like to be rid of the AVHDX file and revert to the basic VHDX but how can I when the system does not show it has any snapshots??

Hope that makes sense!

thanks!!!
