Hi Experts,

I need to know Microsoft best practices for CSV LUNS in Hyper-V 2008 R2 environment. I could not find any good article in this subject . For example the below mentioed are few .Also let me know if any other recommendations that need to be consider for CSV.

1) How much size of SAN LUN will be recommended for each CSV disk ?

2) What is the best Backup method recommeded to backup CSV  disks ?

3) Any specific recommendations to be  followed , to avoid  CSV failures  ?

Where to install Remote Desktop Services.?

I have been working on documentation on how to install Hyper-V on a HP ProLiant, and have it pretty much finished.. But one thing is baffling me...

Server has Windows 2012 and Hyper-V installed as the Management OS. In Hyper-V, I have one virtual Windows 2012 server that is domain controller / DHCP / DNS for the network... The Management OS is a domain member server and I am logged in as the Domain Administrator..  I set up remote desktop services on the Management OS, assigning it all of the required roles (Connection Broker etc etc).. Then I create a Personal Desktop Collection (again on the Management OS) using a sysprepped Windows 7 virtual machine in Hyper-V. Then the users then log in to the Management OS IP/hostname from the browser to access their Personal desktop.

I have read that some people set up RDS on one of the virtual machines, and assign the virtual machine all the roles, but I dont understand how this can work as the sysprepped machines are sitting on the Hyper-V server.. But I also understand that no services other than Hyper-V should be running on the Management OS... What is the best way to set this up for a small business where only one/two users will be accessing personal virtual desktops..

thanks,

merging forever....

I decided to merge down a series of snapshot but my hyper-V keeps merging for days. It correctly goes from 1-100% in about 12 hours than starts again. This cycle has been there for days now.
I remember that I saw a option to stop merging but it is no longer there.
Starting the VM gives an error.
What to do?

System: WSRV2008 64 bit in the VM WSRV2003 (with 2 terrabyte VHD disks )

hello

tonight i shut down my virtual machines (to move hardware)

one of the VMs said merge in progress  under status.

after 1 min it went to 1% complete.  i had to just shut down the 2008 machine.

When it booted back up, the VM loaded normal.  What was the problem ? i cant find anything in relation to merge in progress and what it means.

Before I deleted my snapshot it said merge in process but becouse I ran out of disk space I had to delete the snapshot.
The error I get is
"An error occourred while attempting to change the state of virtual machine.

It still says Merge in Progress and when I click on Cancel merge in progress I get the following error.

Hyper V Test Lab - Hardware

I have a fair idea where I want to go with my hyper-v lab, but I thought I'd post what I was up to and see if anyone had some input that may help myself and others down the road.

The MS TLGs are an awesome resource, but they all seem to assume one Hyper V server.  Understandably - there are so many different possibilities ...which leads me to setup my questions:

I have 3 proliant microservers with 16GB RAM and SSDs for host OS.

Instead of buying a NAS, I was going to make server1 into a storage pool (4 1TB WD REDs) / SCOM machine using server 2012 and set up iSCSI.  I have 5 gigabit ports on server1 - I was going to dedicate 2 nics to a team and create a dedicated iSCSI vlan or subnet.

The other 2 servers would be hyper-V servers on their own subnet that use server1 for storage.

But then I got to thinking, after watching the jumpstart and seeing the improvements in server 2012 maybe they should all just be hyper-V servers and I should virtualize everything.

Anyone have any input on what they would do in such a situation?  Any recommendations on additional hardware?

Host CPU real load?

Hello!

I have Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role on my test host (i7-3612QM CPU) and a few Virtual Machines with default CPU settings:

When CPU on Virtual Machine is overload, Task Manager on Host shows that CPU utilization is very low:

I know that Performance Counters can show some extra info, please, help me to choose which of Performance Counters will show real load of physical CPU?

Thank's!

Windows 2012 Hyper V Nics

Ok, I am new to HyperV & Windows 2012.

I have 1 server that I installed HyperV on.

How many NICS do i need?

I have 1 NIC team to my Network. My storage is SAN EMC and was provided as a DIsk Drive so no NIC was required.

I read I need a NIC for the internal communication between the host and VMs. My question is does this NIC need to be plugged in? If it is communicated over a private network within itself, why would I need ir plugged in? It can communicate without a NIC to the VM.

Access Denied from Hyper-V Manager Windows 8.1 Preview to Hyper-V Server 2012

I have a Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 that I'm trying to communicate with from Windows 8.1 Preview with RSAT installed.

From Windows 8 Hyper-V Manager works fine.

From Windows 8.1 in the "Virtual Machines" section of the Hyper-V Manager I get the following error message.

Access denied.  Unable to establish communication between "HVSERVER" and "WINBLUE".

In addition to all the steps that worked for Windows 8 I've also tried disabling the firewall, but nothing seems to allow the RPC communication.

One odd thing is that some parts of Windows 8.1 Hyper-V Manager seem to be working.  I can click on "Hyper-V Settings" and get a response.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Mismatched Integration Services Version using SR-IOV

$

After digging deep into why my freshly patched VMs were failing cluster validation tests, I have determined that the "hyper-v virtual pci bus" version is not matching the latest integration services when I use SR-IOV on my VMs.  The reported version of the services seems to correspond to this device when SR-IOV is enabled, and appears to match the host when I disable SR-IOV on the VM.  As a result of this, my cluster fails validation saying mismatched integration services when I use SR-IOV.

Are other people able to reproduce this behavior?  I am using HP DL380p Gen8 servers with NC530T NICs.

Hyper-V Replica Stuck on Merge in Progress - No Percentage

Running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 core on two machines.  Attempting for the first time to backup one VM from each Hyper-V Server to the other.

HV1 has a 1.5 Tb fixed VHDX that was approximately 1/4 used.  I initially attempted to start replication from HV1 to HV2 across the WAN, but realized that was going to take too long.  So I put HV1 and HV2 on the same LAN and restarted replication.

I also tried to replicate from HV2 to HV1 a 4 Tb fixed VHDX.  There was about 1.5 Tb used of the 4 Tb VHDX.

The VMs on both Hyper-V Servers have been shut down.  The files look like they copied from one Hyper-V Server to the other, but my HV1 has been showing "Merge in Progress" for over a week.  HV2 seems to have completed whatever it needed to do within 1-2 days.  There is an AVHDX file on HV1, but it is not obvious to me that is changing in size at all (either growing larger or smaller - as I assume should occur as part of the merge).

On HV1 the status shows "Merge in Progress" with several periods, which cycle between 1 and 5, but there is no other progress indicator.  I was expecting something to say X% completed?  It looks like something is going on.  The HDD indicator is on and I can hear a lot of disk activity on HV1.

I have tried rebooting HV1 twice to see if something was stuck, but that didn't seem to make any difference.  Shortly after the reboot both VMs on HV1 were back to "Merge in Progress" status.

When I look at the DIR output on either Hyper-V Server I see some slight changes in the amount of the HDD used, but not nearly as much as I would think given the amount of disk activity.

Given both Hyper-V Servers are on the same LAN right now my intention was to wait for the merge to complete before returning HV1 to its home and restarting replication across the WAN.

But this has been running for over a week.  Copying the whole VHDX shouldn't take more than a few hours, so I don't understand why a merge is taking so long.

Any ideas as to why this doesn't seem to be making any progress?

P.S.  Both Hyper-V Servers have a RAID hardware controller.  HV1 is running RAID5.  HV2 has a better controller and is running RAID6.

Hyper-V Dynamic memory, Driver Locked

Hello All,

I've been wondering about the following.

I have 2 Dell R910 (Windows Server 2008R2 SP1) machines as my Hyper-V host machines, with around 40-50 VMs running on it. For most of my servers I've enabled dynamic memory, but on some of these machines I've seen the following:

For some reason this machine running Remote Desktop Services (with Web Access) is using around 3.8GB of memory.

Processes list only a fraction of the actual Memory being used.

But RAMmap shows that 2.5GB is being used by Kernel Drivers. From what I've read this might be the balooning effect of the dynamic memory. However, the RAM usage was the same yesterday evening (12h before I took these screenshots), when no one was actually working on this server.

I've seen this happen on multiple of my guest machines, the machines are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Edition.

Can anyone explain to me why it is doing this?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Tom

I have a HyperV MS server running MS Server 2008 R2.  The primary server and two of three VMs connect via Remote Desktop.  One of the three VMs does not.  All four servers are configured the same vis a vie Remote Desktop.  So why doesn't the one VM allow remote desktop connections?

Shrinking a VHD?

Help!

I expanded a VHD to the full 2TB limit now I get an error saying there’s not enough room for the assigned memory to load. (If I cut the assigned memory to 1GB the VM will load.  Also, I have not expanded any drive space in the VHD yet.) How can I correct this to get reasonable space for assigned memory?

Thanks!

Failed to shut down virtual machine

I was unable to shut down a W23 Std SP2 guest machine which had no heartbeat in hyper-v mmc, the exact error message was "The applcation encountered and error while attempting to change the state of xxxx. Failed to shut down the virtual machine. This can occur when integration services are not installed, or when the virtual machine has not reached a state in which it can be shut down".

The machine responds to ping but was not accessible from rdp or hyper-v mmc. Browsing the $ admin share in windows explorer was not possible as well.

The host machine is windows std 2008 sp1, and hosts 3 other guest machines as well.

This has occured a few times already, about once very couple of weeks, and each time I had to turn off the machine. No useful events were found in the host and guest event logs.

I have searched numerous sites but found no answers.

disk management, can not set drive (USB) offline

I'm trying to set up a Hyper-V Virtual machine of Windows XP on my windows 8 Pro Laptop.

My problem is getting the VM to recognize a USB drive. I found instructions that say to, on the host, use Disk Management to set the USB drive as Offline. I follow the instructions and first remove the drive letter and then right click to set if as Offline but there is no "Offline" option?

Just like this guy's problem

Anybody know why?

thanks

Whats the best way to create high availability for IIS

$

Hi,

I've inherited a Hyper-v host running 2008 r2 which is running 5 servers all running sites in IIS 7.  At the moment the storage for the virtual disks are all local on the host, so I am looking to add some redundancy into the system so that my IIS sites never go down.

I've been looking at setting up a new machine to mirror the IIS sites then putting traffice through a load balancer but wonder if this is possible using hyper V.

I understand I might need to use Server 2012...

Any ideas would be great

Hello guys and thanks in advance for your time and expertise.

Here's the error:

Port '7D45EBFC-947F-414D-BC6E-424C257188A2' was prevented from using MAC address '00-15-5D-50-0F-02' because it is pinned to port 'B15F6EB0-9185-4F6C-A1E0-299A864BBABD'.

I have two Hyper-V hosts running server 2008 r2.  The servers are a Dell PowerEdge 420.  The servers have two NICs and they are Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Nics setup in a team.  I'm using the most current teaming software.

I guess my question is does anyone have a definitive solution to this problem.  I've researched this and many people have this problem and at best - there are some unreliable workarounds.

My VMs have dynamic Macs.  I've changed the MACs listed to static but no change.  There are no MAC address conflicts.  All of the MACs are unique.  I changed the team from load balancing to failover and the error went away for 15 minutes but then came back.

Should I just scrap the teaming software.  Anyway, everything works in terms of the roles of these VMs but these errors have rendered the system log as useless and I'm considered about this issue.  Anyway, your help and recommendations are greatly appreciated.
