How to import hyper-v module on Windows 2008 and 2008 R2

Trying to Share Wireless Internet with VM

Hello, and thanks for taking a look at my post,

I have an ASUS laptop with windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise installation hosting one VM (that is also windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise).  The host is

configured as a domain controller, AD, DNS, and DHCP.  The host installation has a wirless adapter connected to my home router

(connected to an ISP).  Internet connection works fine for the host machine.  But, I wanted to share my host wireless connection with my

VM.

To do this, I created an Internal Virtual Network through hyper-v manager (I turned off my VM beforehand). Still using hyper-v manager I

went to my VM and Settings and created a network adapter using the legacy type and selected my new virtual network as the network (I

chose dynamic for the MAC address).

I then shared my wireless internet connection with the virtual network adapter.  To do this, I went to the wireless network adapter for the

internet connection, went to the sharing tab, and allowed sharing with the new virtual network I created (I also set the settings to

allow the http requests).

However, I can't get the VM's internet exporer browser to connect through the wireless connection on the host.  So, something is wrong

still and I'm not sure what it is.

I tried a few things like turning off windows firewall on both the host and the VM.  It still didn't work.  So, I pinged from the VM to

the host and that worked fine, and I pinged from the host to the VM and it worked fine too.  So, they can see each other on the virtual

network.

I then did and ipconfig on both to see what the settings were.  On the host the virtual network adapter IPv4 was 192.168.137.1,

255.255.255.0.  On the VM the virtual network adapter was 192.168.137.2, 255.255.255.0.  The wireless internet connection on the host

was 192.168.1.3, 255.255.255.0 (but I assume it's getting it's IP address from the ISP so it will be a different network).

I can't ping the wireless (router) ip address from the virtual machine.

Anyway, I've seen a wireless internet connection shared between a host and it's VM's successfully on UTube so I know the approach is

sound and works.  I've done everything demonstrated in the demo on UTube, but it isn't working for some reason.  Can anyone help please?

Thanks,
David

Still Hoprfull of Hyper-V 2012

I've been a consultant for over 25 years working on Microsoft product for the better part of it. The last five years I have had to spend a lot of time doing virtualization installations and planning. Over 90% of those installations have been VMware because Hyper-V has been limited in data storage features and management.

When I read that Hyper-V 2012 is on it's way I was excited to see the new feature list and management tools. I was extremely glad to read the data features have been increased and overall the product is great. I am very hopeful Hyper-V 2012 will begin to take shares a way from VMware but after spending days trying to perform a basic install of the Hyper-V server 2012 and trying to manage it, I am disappointed.

Understand this is coming from a consultant perspective and not a full time admin working at a specific company. I might visit nine different companies ranging from small to fortune 500 and I have to get in, fix the problem, and get out. Unfortunately, this isn't possible with the current hyper-v management tools today. With VMware I can download a client tool on just about any version of windows, install it, launch it, and manage just 80% of all feature of any host. I can not do this with Hyper-V.

Not every shop with have the money to invest in SCVMM so they are limited in how I can control their Hyper-V environment. This is still a major set back for Microsoft and will continue to slow there growth unless they remove themselves from the thinking that everything must be integrated. This works for most everything else about Windows but not when it comes to Hyper-V management.

What I would like to see is just a light weight Hyper-V client that can be installed on "ANY" supported version of windows that will allow me to supply username/password and manage that host/vm's just like VMware. If Microsoft would do this there market shares would sky rocket in 3 years. More and more companies are moving to consulting companies to take care of there environments and being able to easily manage all aspects of there environment is key.

Hi I have  below scenario

Source and target Data center is linked with 4GB ethernet DWDM link and 4GB fiber DWDM for SAN  (Vlan and SAN zoning are extended)

Source Data Center has Hyper-V R2 cluster node, which has Single LUN loaded with CSV,  this CSV host 10 number of VMs.

target DC has same set of node and SAN storage (LUN)

Business Requirement

1. I need to migrate 4 of the VMs from source DC CSV to target DC node with same size of CSV (LUN)

2. I need to keep both site VMs in production (source DC = 6 VMs, target DC 4 VMs) till all VMs gets migrated to target DC with in 45 days.

Please help me, how can achive above requirement

Guest Network card unknown after copying VHD

Hi,

Host: Windows Server 2008 Datacenter x64 SP2

Guest: Windows Server 2008 Ent. x64 SP2

All things works fine, since we've copied the guest's VHD + delete the VM + recreate VM with copied VHD.

The new VM obtained is connected to a virtual switch (work well, because other VM are plugged with and works fine). The VM boot and work fine, but network card is not recognized.

Problem: The network tray appear as disconnected, Unknown harwares appears in Device manager.

Network Center  can't be opened (too slow and hang) in the guest to see what NIC appear as disconnected.

NIC detected and without driver warning, but the tray in shown like a cable is disconnected. The network center is also unavailable 'explorer hang when opening it)

As IC on the guest (2008 Ent) is a part of operating system, it is not reloadable or repaired (the IC repair is turn and seems to looping when launched - endlees turn).

Trying to remove/add virtual NIC don't resolve the problem.

Adding legacy NIC don't solve the problem (the new device is marked with "?" in devmgmt.msc)

Did anyone have encounter the same problem?

I was able to manage from my R2 box with remote desktop connection manager to remote into hyper-v host server and then manage guests but since  the install of SP1 RC on my box I'm getting this error. Why?

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

convert dynamic to fixed vhd

Hi
I have created a VM with 40gb disk size and installed Server 2008. After completing the installation I have noticed that vhd size is only 7GB; does this mean this is dynamic vhd?

Does hyper-v by default makes dynamic vhd?

How can I convert dynamic to fixed?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

$

Hi all,

We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not been able to find anything.

According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.

Can't delete orphaned VHDX file from CSV

we're running a Hyper-V 2012 Cluster with a CSV disk. I have an un-mounted VHDX disk file (not connected to any VM), and I still cannot delete it. Shutting down the entire Hyper-V service is NOT an option for us. How can I delete this file?

Some Guests Fail (BSOD) After Live Migration

$

Hi,

I have a couple Hyper-V clusters on Server 2008 R2 nodes running on HP BL465c blades.  The clusters seem to work fine, for the most part, except when I try to live migrate Server 2003 guests.  When I do, the live migration is "successful" and the guest moves to the selected node, but the guest is in a blue screen state.  I can't say for sure that this happens every single time a '03 guest live migrates--I have not been able to test on the production systems, but it is very frequent at the least.

I have never had a Server 2008 R2 guest BSOD after migrating, and only once have seen a Server 2008 guest do it.

Some information about my configuration:

  • I am using one CSV for all the relevant guests (ie, all guests are co-located on same CSV).  The CSV is high-performance fiber-channel running off an HP EVA SAN.
  • Each node only has two NICs.  The NICs have been teamed for redundancy and all traffic goes over the team.
  • Integration services are at the current version on all guests
  • Cluster validation passes with warnings

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hyper-V reports: The operation on computer 'localhost' failed. - Cannot manage VM's.

Hello,

I have two Windows 2008 x64 servers, running Hyper-V.  I have about 15 VM's on each server.  I manage the VM's all through the Hyper-V Manager.  When I try to connect to Hyper-V Manager and manage my VM's I get "Connecting to Virtual Machine Management Service."  This times out after a few minutes and then the Hyper-V Manager displays:  The operation on computer 'localhost' failed.

This happens about 2-3 weeks after a reboot.  The only fix I have found is to reboot the server, but since these are production servers this is kind of a pain.

How to determine NIC name - Virtual Network?

$

I've come across a problem where I can't determine which NIC is which in Hyper-V.  I've installed a couple HP NC382T PCIe Gigibit NIC's.  In Hyper-V virtual network settings I see the two NIC's but with the same name, as HP NC382T.

How do you guys distinguish the NIC's that have the same name?  I checked device manager, but didn't see any variance that would help.

I'm trying to track some bandwidth utilization, and I'm having trouble determining which NIC is which.

I came across this thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverhyperv/thread/6582517d-23f3-427f-b555-8ead12d056d4, which was kind of helpful.  A good statement was made about labeling the NIC's prior to configuring the NIC's.  But the server has already been deployed, so wondering if there is any hope for me.

Separate SCSI controller for each disk?

I have a Hyper-V VM which is a File Server.  I have several large pass-through disks to present to this VM.  I have two options:

1. Create one virtual SCSI controller and attach all pass-through disks via this controller.

2. Create a seperate virtuaal SCSI controller for each pass-through disk.

Will option 2 give better performance?  Any other thoughts?

Thanks

Host Disk Space Planning - Disk Space Consumers

$

Hi,

Hi I am trying to find out if there is a calculator or manual calculation that can help figure out how much free space to leave on the partition that holds the guest VMs.

Also don't want to be alerted that I am low on space.

Background:

Windows 2008 R2 Hyper V with no dynamic disks, all VMs will be fixed.

So for the Host:

C: = OS Only

D:= Swap File

E: = Guests  Lets say 1 TB for simplicity

Server has 32 GB of memory

Here are the considerations:

  1. Create a 200 GB drive for the C:\ - OS Drive
  2. Create a 64 GB drive for the swap file (D:\).  Should set the minimum to 16 GB and the maximum to 30 GB ?
  3. Is there a general % of free space to leave on partitions that hold guests ?  (eg. leave 200GB)
  4. Is there a memory (I think its called a .bin) file that is created based on the memory size of the VM ?
  5. Is there any other disk space "consumers" that consume space outside of the actual VM ?

So in my example above, if I put 2 VM's of 512GB when I go to power on, I don't want to run out of space, get alerts that I am out of space and be prevented from using features.

Ideally if MS had a calculator that allowed me to input this information and produce a report that indicates that for this particular system, you should have  X amount of GB's and X amount of memory in the host to support these virtual machines "comfortably".

Thanks in Advance,

"G"

I need to virtualize a server that is running Windows 2000 Advanced Server with an OEM license using VMWare. What will I be required to use for a license key for this to work properly. I would not have an extra key for Windows 2000 Advance Server, but a key for Windows 2008 Datacenter.
