Event 33204 when installing Hyper-V role on WS2012

$

Hi,

On a DL380 G8 Server with 2 HP T361 dualport NIC's the vSwitch is not created when Hyper-V Role is installed.
Eventlog shows Event 33204:

Hyper-V-Setup: Es konnte kein virtueller Ethernet-Switch erstellt und an den Adapter "Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver #2" gebunden werden: Der Parameter ist ungültig. (0x80041008)

(sorry, only in german)

What I did before I installed the Hyper-V Role:

Updated System-ROM and drivers to the latest / recommended Versions as seen in windowsservercatalog.com

I've got 4 ports on this two T361 NIC's. Each NIC's ports are connected to two different switches.
I figured out which Ethernet Adapter in the OS (Ethernet, Ethernet#2, Ethernet#3, Ethernet#4) belongs to which physical Ports on the NIC's and renamed the Ports in the following manner: NIC1_P1, NIC1_P2, NIC2_P1, NIC2_P2.

With LBFOADMIN I teamed the ports:

Name                   : Team1
Members                : {NIC2_P1, NIC1_P1}
TeamNics               : Team1
TeamingMode            : SwitchIndependent
LoadBalancingAlgorithm : HyperVPort

Name                   : Team2
Members                : {NIC1_P2, NIC2_P2}
TeamNics               : Team2
TeamingMode            : SwitchIndependent
LoadBalancingAlgorithm : TransportPorts

So far so good.

When installing Hyper-V Role, I selected Team2 for the vSwitch. After System Reboot, the naming of the Ethernet Adapters is gone (now:  Ethernet#2, Ethernet#3, Ethernet#4, Ethernet#5)

Furthermore, both Teams are no longer visible in Network Center. In LBFOADMIN, I can see both teams are present, but with Status "down". When trying to access the properties of a team, LBFOADMIN crashes.

In PS with Get-NetLBLFOTeam I see the above configuration with the old Adapter Names:

Name                   : Team1
Members                : {NIC2_P1, NIC1_P1}
TeamNics               : Team1
TeamingMode            : SwitchIndependent
LoadBalancingAlgorithm : HyperVPort
Status: Down

Name                   : Team2
Members                : {NIC1_P2, NIC2_P2}
TeamNics               : Team2
TeamingMode            : SwitchIndependent
LoadBalancingAlgorithm : TransportPorts
Status: Down

Question: Is there a limitation with NIC Teaming when installing Hyper-V Role / creating a vSwitch?

Any thoughts on this?

Markus

Disabling Disk Write Cache for a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller Running as a Hyper-V Guest

Hello,

We have a physical server running Windows 2012 Server Standard with the Hyper-V role enabled. One of the guest systems is a Windows 2012 Server Domain Controller. We are getting the following error message in the System Event Log:

Event ID: 32 - Source: disk - Description: The driver detected that the device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has its write cache enabled. Data corruption may occur.

In addition to this, there is the following event in the Directory Services Event Log:

Event ID: 1539 - Source: ActiveDirectory_DomainService - Description: Active Directory Domain Services could not disable the software-based disk write cache on the following hard disk.

Hard disk:

c:

Data might be lost during system failures.

I checked the properties of the logical disks on the host server, and the setting 'Enable write caching on the device' isnot selected on both logical drives.

The update KB2855336 is installed on the host server.

The guest server is using a virtual IDE controller for the hard drive, and the virtual hard disk is VHDX.

When I check the properties of the disk drive within the gues OS (virtual HD ATA device), the setting 'Enable write caching on the device' is selected, and there is a warning that says: "This device does not allow its write-caching setting to be changed."

I have yet to find a clear answer through the forums on if the above log entries can be disregarded, or if there is still additional work that needs to be done to ensure we do not lose AD if the host server crashes.

I am moving my customer from physical DCs to all Windows Server 2012 virtual DCs, and I need to know if I need to have a physical server running as their DC with the FSMO roles.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Gurus

i have installed windows server 2012 RTM with Hyper-V. i already created virtual machine with virtual fiber channel adapter connected to physical one. sometimes when i restart the virtual machine it gets failed to start again and the following error appears in the event viewer of the host:

error id 21502
'Virtual Machine xyz' failed to start.

'xyz' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID number)

'xyz' Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to start reserving resources with Error 'Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.' (0x800705AA). (Virtual machine IDnumber)

'xyz': Operation for virtual port (C003FF18F98C000E) failed with an error: No physical port available to satisfy the request (Virtual machine IDnumber).

error id 1069
Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine xyz' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'xyz' failed. The error code was '0x5aa' ('Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

appreciate your help

Dedicate more CPU space to Virtual Machine

Hi,

I have an VM with 8 virtual cores dedicated to it. The physical VM has 8 cores and it's a Xeon CPU E5-2650.
However, when I am doing a stress test on the VM, the VM is getting really slow (normal of course) and it says CPU usage 100%.

But, when I check the physical CPU usage (hyper-V server 2012 core - Task Manager) it says well, maximum 4% usage.. and all my other VM's are still performing very good.

Is there a way to dedicate a much bigger part to a VM? I really need that option.

Thanks in advance!

Hyper-v 2012 VM backup fail when second VHD attached

Hi All,

I have an issue with a Server 2012 VM running on a Server 2012 std host.

The VM is a file server and has an additional VHD attached which contains the files to be shared.  This 'files' VHD is located on a SMB share and attached via disk management.

This works fine for the Guest and allows portability of the actual storage with out being tied to the guest but the back up of the guest VM fails.

I am using windows server back up and only trying to back up the guest VM not including the 'files' VHD (this is done as a file level back up of the VHD) I select the host under the hyper V tree option.

Other guests VMs back up correctly.

I get an error which can be tracked back to this error in the hyperv vmms log:-

The number of volumes reverted does not match the number of volumes in the snapshot set for virtual machine 'ccdc01' (Virtual machine ID 670221A1-E661-4728-BC51-6482BE8C2176).

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys!

Sharing Hyper-V VMs between Windows Server and Windows 8

$

Hi

I have a work laptop which has been set up for dual boot. The first partition is Windows 7 x64 which I use for day-to-day work. The second has Windows Server 2008 R2 which I use to run various Hyper-V virtual machines to demonstrate our product to clients. When I need to do a demo, I shut down and restart into the second partition and run the VMs.

So far, so good.

However, sometimes it would be useful for me to be able to access the virtual machines from my regular desktop, for example if I am preparing training materials so I can make screenshots. I understand that Windows 8 supports the Hyper-V role, so I have a question. If I upgrade the first partition to Windows 8 x64, could I use it to access and start the virtual machines which are currently set up in the Windows Server partition, and could this cause any problems? All files for both partitions are fully accessible at all times.

Also, I am interested to know where Hyper-V parameters are stored, such as the configuration of the virtual network and the list of installed VMs. Could this information be shared between the two systems or would I be maintaining two separate copies?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Mark

PS Removing Windows Server altogether and running everything under Window 8 is not an option - I need to retain the server partition for client demos so that it does not get sluggish with all my desktop applications etc.

Hyper-V Server 2012 core (no gui) -- internet access for VM's and adding 4 public IP's to the same VM's

$

I have a dedicated server running Hyper-V CORE 2012

I was assigned an extra 4 IP's which are routed direct to the main IP

Everytime i attempt to create an external network my hypervisor OS will lose connectivity and i end up having to format my dedicated server and start over. (before even trying the 4 extra IP's )

I have found many articles on Hyper-V but most are related to Server 2008 with the Hyper-V role.

I need the following:

1. howto get a Server 2012 Standard running as a VM connected to the internet.

2. howto use 4 public IP's on 4 VM's  (the original IP still going to Hyper-V)

Please and thanks for any relevant info.

Parent/Differencing Chain Broken

$

Hi All,

I have stupidly amended the parent VHDX disk of a differencing disk. When I attempt to create a new fixed sized merged disk, I get the error to say that the chain has been broken.

Is there any way at all to get round this?

The parent VHDX disk is on a NAS and associated differencing VHDX disk is on a server - I would like to move the parent disk to the server, so it's in the same location as the differencing disk.

is this possible?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Multiple AVHD's, some older than parent.. need to merge? or safe to delete?

$

Hi,

I have a parent VHD and 3 children, the 1 AVHD file is current and working 100%, the other 2 AVHD files are exactly the same age and older than the parent respectively. I am very quickly running out of physical drive space and need to know if it is safe to delete the 2 AVHD's that aren't in use... I would attempt to merge them, however I understand that in order to merge the child files need to be newer than the parent. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Please see below:

Parent.VHD5/29/201358GB

Child.AVHD7/19/20131TB (Current)

Child.AVHD5/29/2013700GB

Child.AVHD10/8/2012370GB

Thank you.

Connection to DC lost and enabling GUI impossible

$

I transferred my AD lab from VMware ESXi 5.1 to Hyper-V 2012 Core. I have only 1 server to act as Hyper-V host, but during the migration I wanted to join the host to my domain, so temporary I had another Hyper-V client on W8 machine, started the DC.

Everything else worked fine, I even managed to create several networks via virtual switches, and I also enabled RRAS on a Hyper-V host. Then I created last network for nodes in different pool, and after next time, when I powered up my Hyper-V host, connection the DC was lost.

I have 3 different units, lets call them:
A = Hyper-V host with RRAS, and several NICs
B = W8 client with Hyper-V client
C= DC sitting on a client Hyper-V

A can access B, but not C
D can access both
C can access B, but not C

I copied DC to Hyper-V host, thought I could start it from there, reconfigure network and access to DC there. Nope - DC will start, but console connection via Hyper-V is not possible, because of some layer of security.

Last option - I´m trying to enable GUI on Hyper-V host. Tried to used powershell, dism, server manager dashboard from B to A. Everytime the result is the same - cannot download source files, even if I specify source as DVD media or install.wim

Change the domain of a Hyper-V host but not the guests

We are in the process of migrating all our machnes and users to a new domain.  I have one Host machine that is currently on the old domain and I'd like to move it to the new domain.  I have 3 guests running on it now.  Two of them belong to the old domain and one belongs to the new domain.  If I remove the host from the old domain and add it to the new domain, other than reboots, will that have any effect on the guest machines?

Thanks!

Error exporting Hyper-V VM

$

I am running 2 VMs in Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. But am running out of space on the partition where the VMs were created. I have another larger partition on the same Hyper-V server and want to move the VMs to this larger partition.

I was able to successfully export one of the VMs to the larger partion and import it succesfully. The process ran perfectly.

However when I try to export the second VM the following error is is generated...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An error occured while attempting to export the virtual machine.
Export filed for virtual machine 'SALVO'.
Export failed for virtual machine 'SALVO'
(41322DFC-B316-4CF8-9B19-7753078F0D4B) with error 'The system cannot find the file specified.' (0x80070002).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What can I do to resolve this error. The VM is functioning fine. I don't understand why I am not able to export it. At one point in time I did have a second vhd attached to the system. But I removed it long ago and there were no observable side effects.

Thanks, David

Can no longer ping Hyper-V server by internal IP

$

Hi guys,

I have 2 Hyper-V 2012 servers, which are joined to a domain (2 DCs) which are VMs on these servers. There are appropriate DNS records for each Hyper-V server.

I have noticed that both servers have identical ipconfig settings (with of course different IPs etc), but when I run tracert and the hostname of one Hyper-V server, the first hop returns the destination Hyper-V server.

If I do this on the other Hyper-V server, it will return hostnames which are of my webhost. It seems to be trying to use the public DNS to find the internal server (the server I am pinging FROM has 2 nics the private network and public internet).,

As a result, I can't ping this Hyper-V server. The firewall is off and nor can I ping the VMs internally by the private IPs. It looks like on a 2 NIC'd VM, the public NIC is trying to resolve the private IP, and one a server with just the private NIC, I get destination host unreachable.

Any suggestion what may cause this? I can however ping outwards from this server.

Networking with Hyper V

Hello, I am hoping that someone can help me. I have spent hours searching the net for the answer to my dilemma, but to no avail. Here is my dilemma.... I have one server computer running Windows Server 2012 Standard...I have created one virtual machine running Server 2012 Standard) using Hyper V....I created an external virtual switch using the virtual switch manager (the virtual switch is configured to use the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet). The VM is working fine... I am able to browse the internet without a problem. This what I need to do...

I need to set up the virtual machine so that it can be accessed from an outside source using Remote Desktop. In the many hours of research I have done, I have learned that I need to assign a ROUTABLE IP address to the virtual machine (right now it has an internal IP 192.168.x.x)... and I also read something about bridging the adapters... the Ethernet and the virtual switch... I tried that but I get an error .. "Unexpected error while configuring bridge" ...neither of the adapters are set for ICS...but I think the error is caused from the fact that the one adapter I am trying to bridge is the adapter that my internet connection is connected to. So here are my questions:

1. How do I assign a routable IP address to the VM (and what gateway and dns would I use).

2. How do I make the VM reachable from an outside source via Remote Desktop (I am going to be offering the VM for rent as VPS's so the renters will need to be able to access them through remote desktop)

I am a newbie to this stuff of VM and such (as you can tell, lol), and I would appreciate any help in this matter. Thank you.

All VM's locked up in Server 2012 Cluster!

Hi,

About 2 hours ago this evening, we lost communication to all 20 VM's on a 8 Node Cluster and they took 25 minutes to recover! Fibre Channel shared storage is being used throughout the cluster through 2 redundant routes from each node. The host OS was still working fine. I appreciate this points to the storage going down but I really don't think it had, there are no errors on either FC switch and no error on either storage device. We are using Server 2012 on HP DL360's.

The Get-ClusterLog returns this error at the time they all went down:

Hi

I am trying to live migrate a Hyper-V Guest between 2 Server 2012 Machines using the following powershell command:-
