VM routing question

$

0

Ok I'm a little confused here: I have a VM that has a static ip in the .13 segment, 192.168.13.21 because the original host, HOST1 was also in the .13 segment. After I migrated the VM from HOST1 to HOST2, which is in the .15 segment, I expected to
have to change the IP on the VM to something in the .15 segment because the host is in the .15 segment and there is currently no NIC on HOST2 that is on the .13 segment. It is not multihomed. However, the VM maintaines it's .13 IP address and is somehow able to communicate with the rest of the network. How can a host on the .15 segement host a VM that is on the .13 segment? How does the .13 VM talk to the network? Where is this routing being performed? Signed, Confused

RemoteFX enabled, but no RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter

Hi,

I'm trying to run Hyper-V VDI with RemoteFX on two hardware configurations.

Both running Windows Server 2012 as host and Windows 7 as VM - All available updates are installed. Integration Services Setup Disk are installed on the VM.

I have added the Hyper-V role and made me en Virtual Windows 7 Machine

Hyper-V finds one supported physical GPU and I'm selecting it to use it with RemoteFX.

Under the Virtual Machines settings I have added RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter.

Booting the VM and nothing exiting happens, under Device Manager and Display Adapters, only Standard VGA Graphics Adapter is listed.

Tips anyone?

Where to download Hyper-V RDP ActiveX control ?

I want to write a VM management website to let our customers control their VMs.

I hope our customers can connect to the console session of their VMs by by themselves.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/taylorb/archive/2010/06/01/writing-your-own-vmconnect-app-web-interface-for-vm-console-access-to-hyper-v-vm-s.aspx

This thread says we can use Hyper-V RDP ActiveX control to implement this easily, and there is a sample on the ddc homepage. But I can not find the Hyper-V RDP ActiveX control file and the sample code.

Can anyone tell me where can I download them?

Trying to install the all-in-one Hyper-V core from en_microsoft_hyper-v_server_2012_x64_dvd_915600.iso

System is an MB is an Intel P2600CP2 board with dual xeon E5-2620 processors

I have a 120gb SSD sata 6gb/s drive attached to a PCIe gen 2 controller card (this is where I will be installing the hypervisor)

I have 2 3TB sata drives attached to the 6gb/s ports on the motherboard (these will be setup in RAID 1 for VM storage)

When installing the iso, all disks show"This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk" with details indicating that the disk's controller may not be enabled in the BIOS.

All disks are enabled in the bios.

Looking at this post - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925481 - led me to believe that the mulitple disks were confusing the install. So I disconnected the 2 3TB from the motherboard. No luck... same thing.

ESXi v5.1 installed just fine.

Any ideas?

Windows 2012 Hyper-V - Guest operating system(server 2008 r2) LUN mapping Issue.

Hi,

We have installed server 2012 and enabled hyper-v role in it.

We have created Zoning and connected the VM (server 2008 R2) directly to LUNs in a FC SAN.

The storage is accessible to VM now but once the VM is rebooted it losts all the LUN configuration, either we need to reconfigure it again or we need to reboot the host server to restore the LUN settings to VM.

Please help us to solve this issue.

Thanks

Server 2012 Virtual Machine BSOD after hardware crash - 4 times

$

I have now had 4 Server 2012 VMs fail to boot after a hardware failure in the cluster, requiring the servers to be rebuilt. This has happened in a span of 2 months since we started deploying this configuration and using Server 2012.

This has happened at 3 different locations, meaning it is NOT tied to a specific SAN, switch, or server.
-The first and second failures was when the Hyper-v servers both BSOD at the same time, causing the guests to die. BSOD was due to a network driver issue, and both systems receiving the same bad packet.
-The third failure was in our lab as we were building the cluster prior to production deployment. We had a power outage that killed the SAN, but left the storage and switch running.
-The fourth failure was when we had the switch doing iSCSI reboot on us. None of the Server 2008 machines were effected, but 1 of our 2012 Domain Controllers BSOD and needed to be rebuilt from scratch.

Here's the hardware setup for each location. I have this setup in 15+ locations, the problem has happened in different locations, so it is not specific to one location's hardware.

-2 Cisco UCS servers running Server 2012 Datacenter with Hyper-V in a cluster.
-Nimble storage array for iSCSI volumes.
-HP switch for iSCSI backbone.
-All hardware and drivers are being updated at the time of the build.

The dead systems all share these things:
-Running Server 2012 standard
-Domain controller
-created from the same template VHDX file

At this point I have no faith that any VM will survive any sort of hardware crash or power outage. I can see it occasionally causing a VM to not boot after a crash, but we've had 5 system crashes, and of those 5, 4 of them have caused me to rebuild a Server 2012 guest VM. That's an 80% failure rate.

Anyone else experiencing this level of failure?

I've been doing iSCSI VMs on VMware for 6+ years, seen countless crashes, and never had to rebuild a VM because of it. This is my first go at hyper-v. I'm not trying to bash it and say VMware is better, I'm just amazed at what I'm seeing, as it's not expected.

I've followed all the guidelines of MS and the storage vendor for iSCSI configuration. The problem doesn't appear to be storage related though. The VM will boot, so the VHDx file is not corrupt,it just seems that Server 2012 as a VM is not very crash resilient.

I have some systems in the lab now getting ready to ship, I am going to see if I can BSOD a Server 2012 guest running on local storage.

Domain controller VMs using dynamic VHDx corrupt after power failure

Over the past couple of months I have experienced 4 dead 2008 R2 SP1 domain controllers after power failure on Hyper-V 2012 hosts. The domain controller VMs will start after power failure and have varying degrees of file system corruption. In each instance the corruption has rendered the domain controller unusable. The problem has not occurred with every power failure, but in testing the failure rate has been over 10%.

The Hyper-v 2012 hosts are as follows:

  • Dell PowerEdge r720 with flash backed write cache on Raid controller
  • Dell PowerEdge T710 with battery backed write cache on Raid controller
  • Dell PowerEdge T310 with a single SATA hard drive and write cache disabled
  • Generic system with a single SATA hard drive and write cache disabled

The VM configuration experiencing corruption is as follows:

  • Each VM was created from a base 2008 R2 SP1 syspreped VHDx image template file (40 Gigs)
  • The image template was originally created as a VHD and was then converted to a VHDx
  • The VHDx file has 512k sectors instead of the native 512e of VHDx files (a result of VHD - VHDx conversion)
  • Each VM was assigned 1024 Meg RAM and 1 virtual processor
  • The domain controllers were created by promoting the base 2008 r2 install to a DC after base image deployment
  • Only one corrupt VM was not running the 2012 integration components. The rest were running current 2012 integration components

I have done extensive testing on this issue and the problem for me seems to revolve around the VHDx file format. I have managed numerous Hyper-v installations since the original 2008 server version was released and I have never seen corruption like this until 2012 and VHDx.

For the past few days I have been testing fixed sized VHD VMs on a 2012 host and I have not been able to reproduce the data corruption issue. I seem to only be able to reproduce the problem when using dynamic VHDx files. I have not done any testing on 2012 hosts with fixed size VHDx files or dynamic VHD files.

It would be great to hear from anybody else experiencing similar issues so that we can compare notes and hopefully get to the bottom of this problem.

Where is the memory state file of VM saving stored?

Hi all,

My host OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V role installed. As you know, Hyper-V supports saving the memory state like "Hibernate" in a physical machine. My question is, where is the memory state file of VM saving stored?

Thanks,

Hyper-V Replica Stuck on Merge in Progress - No Percentage

$

Running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 core on two machines.  Attempting for the first time to backup one VM from each Hyper-V Server to the other.

HV1 has a 1.5 Tb fixed VHDX that was approximately 1/4 used.  I initially attempted to start replication from HV1 to HV2 across the WAN, but realized that was going to take too long.  So I put HV1 and HV2 on the same LAN and restarted replication.

I also tried to replicate from HV2 to HV1 a 4 Tb fixed VHDX.  There was about 1.5 Tb used of the 4 Tb VHDX.

The VMs on both Hyper-V Servers have been shut down.  The files look like they copied from one Hyper-V Server to the other, but my HV1 has been showing "Merge in Progress" for over a week.  HV2 seems to have completed whatever it needed to do within 1-2 days.  There is an AVHDX file on HV1, but it is not obvious to me that is changing in size at all (either growing larger or smaller - as I assume should occur as part of the merge).

On HV1 the status shows "Merge in Progress" with several periods, which cycle between 1 and 5, but there is no other progress indicator.  I was expecting something to say X% completed?  It looks like something is going on.  The HDD indicator is on and I can hear a lot of disk activity on HV1.

I have tried rebooting HV1 twice to see if something was stuck, but that didn't seem to make any difference.  Shortly after the reboot both VMs on HV1 were back to "Merge in Progress" status.

When I look at the DIR output on either Hyper-V Server I see some slight changes in the amount of the HDD used, but not nearly as much as I would think given the amount of disk activity.

Given both Hyper-V Servers are on the same LAN right now my intention was to wait for the merge to complete before returning HV1 to its home and restarting replication across the WAN.

But this has been running for over a week.  Copying the whole VHDX shouldn't take more than a few hours, so I don't understand why a merge is taking so long.

Any ideas as to why this doesn't seem to be making any progress?

P.S.  Both Hyper-V Servers have a RAID hardware controller.  HV1 is running RAID5.  HV2 has a better controller and is running RAID6.

Could I run applications on guest os and host os at the same time?

Hi experts,

Could I run, ex: SQL server on host OS and SAP on guest OS, on the same physical server? Someone told me SAP or Microsoft support virtualization on pure hyper-V server. That's to say, I can't run other applications on guest OS. Is this true? Please show me the link if possible, thanks.

Good afternoon:

This vm will start just fine with a single vhdx connected to IDE 0,0.  Connecting a second vhdx to IDE 1,1 will succeed in the Settings window, but fail upon boot.  The vm does not have a dvd/cd drive attached.

hyper-v replication error 0x00002EFD

hi,

i'm trying to configure hyperv replication on windows 2o12 clusters. this is hosting scenario:

  • on both sides Hv is configured as a failover cluster
  • both are in different domains
  • sites are connected with VPN, proper hostname are resolavable, certificates are created and rootCA are cross-trusted

when i try to finish the replication i receive error:

connection with the server could not be wstablished (0x00002EFD)

HV connot connect to specified Replica server '<NODE-A>'. Error: A connection with the server could not be established (0x00002EFD). Verifiy that the specified server is enabled as a Replica server, allows inbound connection on port 443 and supports the same authentication scheme.

what's strange: broker service is active on second node. when i check 443 port on NODE-B - it's working fine. on NODE-A it's closed - quite logical as broker service is on NODE-B. when i move the resource, situation is mirrored - and replication error is exaclty the same but the name is change to a node without broker resource. the question isWHY THE HECK BROKER IS REDIRECTING TO A WRONG NODE?

Hyper-V 2012 and Suse Linux 11 SP2 issue

Hi, we are running several Suse Linux boxes under Hyper v3 / Server 2012 , one of the boxes which has high network load , keeps randomly locking up, nothing in the logs, etc, it just freezes under high network load,

We have'nt applied any updates yet to this VM, its just a  RAW SP2 Suse 11 enterprise.

not sure if this is an integration issue, or if there should be some settings altered for networks on a Linux box.

Does anyone know if there is an integration update for suse 11 sp2. ?

or have any other ideas what this could be. ?

many thanks
