Corrupted multiple VHD files running on an iscsi san after server reboot

$

I recently implemented a new server with server 2012 enterprise, and attached a synology DS1512+ iscsi san. We have about 22 virtuals running

Everything was working fine, and getting great results. But, as typical, the machine need to reboot for an update. After coming back online, roughly half(only the most important, of course) of the virtual machine housed on the iscsi san became corrupt or the configurations became corrupt, and would not start. Luckily I was able to copy the VHD files of a few of them(once again, low priority ones) to another Hyper v server, and bring them back online.

After another reboot, we lost a couple more virtual machines.

I was thinking about placing a delayed start on the hyper v services on startup, thinking that this would make sure that the iscsi was connected prior to attempt to start all virtuals.

Any ideas???

Hyper-V 2012 failover cluster design questions

$

Havn't found answers in MS documentation and blogs for the following two questions:

1. With Hyper-V 2012 and failover clustering, it's possible to deploy HA VM's either to HA SMB 3.0 fileshares or to CSV's (like with previous Windows server versions). What are the advantages and disadvantages of using SMB 3.0 or CSV's? Is there any comparision table available of both solutions?

2. Have to deploy a 2 node cluster with a HP MSA 2000 G3 shared SAS storage. This should be supported and is documented in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj822937.aspx and http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/02/10314262.aspx. But both guides mention that it's necessary to create storage space(s) either before or after creating the failover cluster. But I can't see the reason why I have to create a storage space as an "additional layer", because the MSA 2000 can provide several different RAID protected volumes to Windows with the internal SW, like any other iSCSI or FC SAN provides LUN's. Are "storage space(s)" mandatory with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connected physical disk?

Thank you all in advance for any help!

How can I repair this VM? Multiple avhd's

$

I have a VM that is booting off an aVHD, which I can only assume was a snapshot of it at one point.  The folder contains a single VHD, which should be the original, and multiple other aVHD files from various dates/times.  When shutting down the VM none of these aVHD's merge into the VHD, would this be because it isn't running from the VHD?

Could I follow the instructions in this post to get them all to merge with no issues?

Can I create a brand new VHD from the aVHD it's running off of to have a fresh start?

Naturally, this is a production machine hosting the companies main LOB application.

Server 2012 Hyper-V lost "NT Virtual Machine\Virtual Machines" permissions to "log on as a service"

We have a 2012 cluster environment running Hyper V. We have some machines that run fine on Cluster Node 1, but when we try to fail them over to other Cluster Nodes, they fail with error " Failed to create the planned virtual machine at migration destination. Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer (0x80070569)"

In researching this problem, I have found the following article that explains how to fix this issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779204

However, when I attempt to add "NT Virtual Machine\Virtual Machines" accounts to my GPO's, it is unable to find the account name/group "Virtual Machines".

Does anyone have a detailed explanation of how this should be completed? Thanks.

Failed Shared Nothing Migration - Element Not Found (0x80070490)

Hi Everyone

I am experiencing an error when trying to migrate a virtual machine from one cluster to another.

I have two Hyper V Clusters, OTJHBHVC01 and OTJHBHVC02, the nodes I am using are OTJHBHPV01 and OTJHBHPV05 respectively.

If I remove a virtual machine from the cluster, and attempt to migrate it to a node in the other cluster I am getting the following error:

Event ID 21024 Source: Hyper-V-VMMS

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration because the destination host rejected the request: Element not found. (0x80070490).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'OTJHBHPV05': Element not found. (0x80070490).

Virtual machine migration operation for 'OTJHBNMS01' failed at migration source 'OTJHBHPV01'. (Virtual machine ID A1226C5A-C1F3-44EC-A5F1-F06BBE671320)

As mentioned, I remove the Virtual Machine from the cluster, In the Hyper-V MMC I then right click, select "Move" - Move the Virtual Machine, I select the destination Hyper-V host (node) not the cluster name. Select "Move the virtual machine's data to a single location" Choose a location on one of the Clustered Shared Volumes that has enough space. And proceed with the move. The migration runs till about 70% of the way of the progress bar until I receive the error.

I cant seem to upload screenshots yet, even though I have verified my Microsoft Account.

I have searched, but have been unable to find any similar posts. I have come across one post where System Center Virtual Machine Manager was involved, but we are not using SCVMM. I have tried the steps suggested in the post but they have not worked for me.

I have tried restarting the Virtual Machine Management Service, as well as restarting both Hyper V hosts, but still receive the error.

I have tried this in both directions, from any of the nodes in my cluster and still receive this error. Live Migrations within the clusters work perfectly.

All servers are members of the same domain. The user logged in performing the action is a Domain Administrator.

Both Hyper V Servers have been enabled to accept live migrations using Credential Security Support Provider, not Kerberos (We are not using remote tools)

I have also tried this on multiple Virtual Machines, all with the same result.

I am running Windows Server 2012, Datacenter edition.

Failover Cluster Validation tests report no errors or serious warnings.

We were able to do Shared nothing migrations about 2 months ago, nothing has been changed on the Cluster with exception of Windows updates and the installation of the following KB updates: KB2813630 and KB2823643. These two updates were installed to try and resolve an issue we were experiencing with iSCSI which we since resolved by switching to Fibre Channel Controllers on our storage device.

Would appreciate any help or suggestions!

Thanks

Leigh

Hi. I use Windows Server 2012 and many VM's on this server.

And now i noticed, sometimes if i logn time not working with VM - display this VM is "pused". As example:
i run Windows Update and wait when it finish, but Windows Update paused. I still wait when finish install 2 updates - but long time never happens. And process-line have one position. When I get tired of waiting i go to VM and display switch to actually moment )

Is it possible to fix the display refresh? Because I can wait for hours (

Thank you!

Best practice for virtual HBAs in HYPER-V 3

$

Hello,

we are deploying SQLSERVER and NAS servers on HYPER-V 3 which have virtual HBAs to access directly LUNs in the SAN.

We have in the hosts 4 physical HBAs ports. We are using 2 for accessing the CSVs and 2 for fiber vSwitch (normally we put the operating system in CSV and dedicated LUNS: logs, databases... in direct assign LUNs). We have two physical fiber switches in our SAN and each one of the HBAs (of each group:CSV or for vSwitch) goes to one of them to assure fault tolerance.

I haven't found any best Practice for how to establish fault-tolerance/multipath aggregation. As I see , there are two options:

1. Create a fiber vSwitch with two physical HBAs and assign one or two virtual HBAs to each machine. This way I do the same zonning on both switches, but I don´t know which path they will go.

2. Create two fiber vSwitchs (one with each HBA) and two virtual HBAs on each guest (one over each vSwitch) and do a different zonning in each switch.

We are using for the firsts guests option one, with only one virtual HBA for each guest (it is more a prove that a final design). But I think the second one is more like the physical way and you assure two paths (also you have less innitiators/masking in your Storage). I don´t really know (and haven't found a clue) how HYPER-V assigns the virtual HBAs to the physicals ones (round robin?, load...)...

Any best pratice or advice?

thanks

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

VM on 2012 Host to 2008 Host for Disaster Backup

$

We purchased 2 new Servers, w/ 2012, that will be used for our VHOST and Clustered.
We will be moving/migrating all of our current VM's (currently hosted on 2008 R2 Host and Dell 2950's) to new 2012 VHOST.  All this is being done in Office/Location (A)

We currently have all the VHD's being replicated to Office/Location (B)

I would like to re-purpose those 2950's to Office/Location (B) and use them as Backup/Disaster Recovery VHOST
I installed 2012 on the 2950; however there are no "correct/supported" 2012 Drivers for the 2950's - I used the 2008 Drivers and all seem's ok.

However, I'm not too confident of the Drivers and thought about putting 2008 R2 back on these 2950's where I have all correct/supported drivers.

My question is:  In a DR situation, will I be able to bring up those VHD's on the 2008 R2 Host (Office/Location B)?
We currently backup the config files of the VHOST in Office A and they are replicated to Office B.  Will I be able to use those as well.

I think the jist is covered; just want best situation where I can use the 2950's in Office B, if needed to bring up the VM's on 2008 R2.

Just FYI - we've already address the subnet/networking avenue - just need to know about 2012 Host VM's running on a 2008 R2 Host....

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Boot Failure problem facing while starting an virtual machine. How can I resolve it?

$

Hi,

I have installed HYPER-V role on my pc(2008 R2). I also installed 5 virtual machines and they are working fine.

Recently I tried to copy a file from host pc to the one of the virtual machine. But I couldn't copy the file.

So I turn off the virtual machine. Then attached vhd from Disk Management console. Then I was able to copy the required file to that particular partition.

Later I detached the vhd. I tried to start the virtual machine. I got an error "Boot Failure. Please select proper boot device or insert boot cd....etc."

I tried to run "bcdedit" from command prompt after booting with the 2008 r2 cd, I got an error like "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device can not be found."

How can I resolve this issue?

Regards,

Ram.

Integration services upgrade fails

$

I have a 2008 R2 VM running on a Hyper-v 2012 server.  I would like to update the VM integration services to the newer 2012 version.  When I insert the integration services iso it asks if I want to upgrade this installation and I click OK.  The installation starts and when it gets to the installing guest componets step if fails with the error "and error has occurred: one of the update processes returned error code 3017"

I've tried turning off the offering of integration services on the VM settings.

Delete the wdf01000.sys and wdfldr.sys files from c:\windows\system32\drivers

I have tried stopping the hyper-v services on the VM

Looked at the detect HAL setting in msconfig, but that is not an option in R2 apparently.

I suspect this VM would also not have installed updated integration services when it was on a 2008 hyper-v host either, but not positive.

What?!?! Hyper V worked in 2008 R2 but not in 2012?!?! Incorrect function.

$

I have a new server 2012 upgrade (yes, I did upgrade from 2008 R2 to 2012 - it DOES work) and I'm banging my head on the wall because of this darned Hyper-V.

Hyper-V worked just fine in 2008 R2, but after the upgrade it not only made me reinstall the role and I lost my VMs, but after importing them none of them will start. I get an "Incorrect Function" message, and thru some digging it made me think that my hardware (Intel S3000AHLX motherboard with a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 @ 2.66 GHz) was to fault, but (1) it worked before dangit, and (2) Intel's site confirms that both support VT. I even double-checked in the BIOS that it's still turned on.

I thought it might be my VMs after having to reimport, even went as far as to recreate them with the same VHDs. I even tried to create a new one. Same "Incorrect Function" message.

I checked in the VMMS event log, and its throwing error message %%2147942401 and error code 0x80070001.

Again - it worked before the upgrade!!

HDD space required to perform Manual merge of .avhd to .vhd

Hello,

I would like to manually merge avhd to .vhd. Do I have enough free space on HDD to perform this operation? Also, is there a good Tech note on doing a manula merge?

Free space on Disk= 71.GB

.vhd file = 71 GB

.avhd = 70 GB

Thanks!
